The 2020 Chevy Bolt — GM Changes The Game, Again

You can now buy a Bolt for around $26,000,

underselling every affordable EV you can buy in America and having a longer range than all of them.

Since my last Bolt, they have improved their understanding of EVs. And, yes, they are committed to them.

I expect to see some wonderful EVs from GM in the next few years.

The Bolt is a superbly built car, and

let’s remember that GM came out with this trouble-free car several years ago.

Compare that with the failures of several other manufacturers.

Bottom line:

two thumbs up for GM, it EV future, and the 2020 Bolt. At $26,000, it’s going to be very hard for any car company to beat!

From The Beacon email

"Electric car batteries capable of recharging in five minutes (https://go.grist.org/e/399522/dium-email-utm-campaign-beacon/z3dfb3/732804610?h=I7l_MH8bsp1jK4rqB05SmpC4uO_6xAxePm6zL9 vV5Ek) have been produced for the first time in a factory —

a step toward clearing one of the major hurdles preventing the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

The batteries were developed by Israeli company StoreDot and manufactured in China.

“A five-minute charging lithium-ion battery was considered to be impossible,” Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot’s CEO, told the Guardian (https://go.grist.org/e/399522/ith-five-minute-charging-times/z3dfb5/732804610?h=I7l_MH8bsp1jK4rqB05SmpC4uO_6xAxePm6zL9 vV5Ek).

“But we are not releasing a lab prototype, we are releasing engineering samples from a mass production line.”"

NTSB slams Tesla in a probe of the 2018 death by Autopilot of Elaine Herzberg.

The National Transportation Safety Board has filed comments (https://www.regulations.gov/comment/NHTSA-2020-0106-0617) blasting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for its permissive regulation of driver-assistance systems. The letter was dated February 1 but was only spotted (https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/12/tesla-is-using-customers-to-test-av-tech-on-public-roads-ntsb.html)by CNBC's Lora Kolodny on Friday. The letter repeatedly calls out Tesla's Autopilot for its lax safety practices and calls on NHTSA to establish minimum standards for the industry.https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/03/federal-investigators-blast-tesla-call-for-stricter-safety-standads/

Authorities said they used 32,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames because the vehicle’s batteries kept reigniting. At one point, Herman said, deputies had to call Tesla to ask them how to put out the fire in the battery.

California to ban the sale of new gasoline powered cars by 2035

California is expected to put into effect on Thursday its sweeping plan to prohibit the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035, a groundbreaking move that could have major effects on the effort to fight climate change and accelerate a global transition toward electric vehicles.

“This is huge,” said Margo Oge, an electric vehicles expert who headed the Environmental Protection Agency’s transportation emissions program under Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. “California will now be the only government in the world that mandates zero-emission vehicles. It is unique.”

The rule, issued by the California Air Resources Board, will require that 100 percent of all new cars sold in the state by 2035 be free of the fossil fuel emissions chiefly responsible for warming the planet, up from 12 percent today. It sets interim targets requiring that 35 percent of new passenger vehicles sold in the state by 2026 produce zero emissions. That would climb to 68 percent by 2030.

The restrictions are important because not only is California the largest auto market in the United States, but more than a dozen other states typically follow California’s lead when setting their own auto emissions standards.

...a course not. Ford has orders straight from Headquarters, aka Hussein in the White House. (This) EV program is Big Time. MSM is in on it, the entire cadre, FOX right in there with CNN in the lead + the Big 4, I mean Big 3 automakers will do as they're commanded to. It's on the proverbial teeter/tooter as to if it's going to come out the other side with a success that CAN BE VERIFIED in the daylight. I'm absolutely pulling for abject failure as you can imagine, Winester. I want this thing driven before the hoard, and then of course the immediate lamentation of the women. WOOT.

Let us proceed...

Drove a mach-e mustang in LA last week. Was OK.Didn't really have time to figure out all the touch screen stuff. I could see how it would work fine for an urban commuter.

One major complaint of mine with EVs (and Tesla specifically) is the abandonment of the traditional dashboard. I went with a BMW because I've owned a lot of and like BMWs, but mostly because it was the most "normal car" EV I could find out there. The MachE has a tiny little dashboard, which is better than just an iPad in the center console I guess. The Polestar is the only other I've been in that is "normal"

Love my i4 M50 though.

Scott's a good dude. Nothing wrong with driving a BMW. IF I did it, however, Beta Blake would accuse me of "big timing" like when I flew on an airplane last week.

BTW, Reuters says it costs GM $75,000 to build each Volt. It's the crazy way the regs work. They lose on the volts so they can keep selling trucks and SUVs with high profit margins.

A second note from the Chief Towing Officer: We got our first bonafide death threat over this coverage! Ha, I called it. Here it is in full, since it is now part of the story… less the IP address:

“You guys are a lying piece of [redacted] rag that purposely spreading false information about cybertruck .. which by will be the best selling truck in the world —- go eat [6 swear words in a row, all redacted] You purposely skewed data to make it sound bad just for your purpose of hurting Tesla. Get ready we plan on suing your [redacted]. You don’t know who we are, but we’re coming after you. go suck a tailpipe get your quickest way out.”

For the record, we do not skew any data for any purpose. We cover the news here. It’s honest work and we’ll keep getting it done. – Kay

TL;DR: The CyberTruck is 17 times more likely to have a fire fatality than a Ford Pinto (https://fuelarc.com/evs/its-official-the-cybertruck-is-more-explosive-than-the-ford-pinto/)
