See MavFag this is why you don't get excited over foreign first year players that show promise against lower-tier teams their rookie season.

That foreign-born aspect will always come to bite you in the ass. Broken foot means automatically he's not going to be normal for like 9 months. If it requires surgery he won't be the same until next season. Even then, with the foot, it's possible it becomes a lingering issue.

I guess it depends on which tarsal because the docs said that the 1st and 5th were holding my foot

Mavericks' Roddy Beaubois breaks foot, could miss start of season

Mavericks point guard Roddy Beaubois suffered a broken bone in his left foot while training with the French national team. Mavs president Donnie Nelson on Friday confirmed the initial report by the French newspaper L’Equipe.

Beaubois reportedly could miss up to three months if surgery is required to repair the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot.

The NBA season begins in late October, which would put Beaubois in danger of missing the first part of the season.

Team owner Mark Cuban wrote in an e-mail to The Dallas Morning News, "It happens. He should be back for the start of the season."

Mavs officials hope it’s a hairline fracture. A timetable for his return will be determined when Beaubois is evaluated by team doctors. He was to fly back to Dallas late Friday.

Beaubois figures prominently in the Mavs’ future. He averaged 7.1 points and shot 52 percent from the field in 56 games his rookie season. He also made 40 percent of his 3-point attempts.

With the blessing of Mavs owner Mark Cuban and Nelson, Beaubois accepted a spot on the French national team in the FIBA world championships. He started his off-season at the Las Vegas Summer League in early July. The FIBA world championships begin on Aug. 28 in Turkey.

The Mavericks had been concerned about Beaubois’ participation if the French team had included Tony Parker because of limited playing time. They felt he could benefit more by training in Dallas.

But with Parker’s withdrawal, Beaubois stood to gain valuable experience with an expanded role against strong competition.

However, his injury illustrates why Cuban has been outspoken in his criticism of NBA players competing on national teams during the offseason. He said recently that there was ``zero upside.’’

Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki decided not to play for Germany at the 2009 European Championships because of a ``mutual agreement’’ he reached with Cuban. Cuban reportedly told Nowitzki that he’d prefer he not play but left the decision up to him.

According to the league’s agreement with FIBA, basketball’s international governing body, NBA teams cannot prevent their players from competing for international teams in the offseason provided those teams can afford the requisite insurance.

The Mavericks have worked during the summer with Beaubois on leadership, on holding the team together and keeping his poise even if things don't go well when it comes to shooting the ball. Hwoever, Beaubois struggled at times during NBA Summer League play.

Beaubois has all sorts of opportunities in front of him. Coach Rick Carlisle has said he wouldn't be surprised if Beaubois was in the starting lineup next season. Jason Kidd said he would consider playing off the bench to get the youngster more minutes.

However, just because he finished strong in his rookie season, there are no guarantees of success moving forward, especially now with an injury.

As much as I dislike the Mavs (though I'm increasingly liking Cuban), this sucks. I don't agree with Parker, Manu, Splitter, anyone playing international play in the summer, just like I'm all for the players that bailed on the US. No different.

You are getting paid MILLIONS of dollars to play a game, which is essentially an investment, and I believe contracts should be structured wherein if the given player wants to play international (or even for the US team), they automatically are deducted pay or are at minimum guaranteed less money.

If you went out and bought a Formula 1 car, you'd want to save it for the races, right? Not drive it around day-to-day in traffic?

I understand these players having national loyalties -- in fact, I'm all for that -- but they have to understand that they are putting essentially an investment at risk, without compensation to the investor if they get in a fender-bender, or worse.

That's just messed up, and this is another example of it. I hope during the impending lockout this is one of the issues that will be resolved.
