This game had a little something for everyone. Barry kicked ass for whottt, Tim came up huge sprained ankle and all owning all those dumbasses who wanted to trade him last week, Manu was there for las peronistas, and Tony Parker made Aggie wet himself by clanking 3 of 4 free throws in the clutch.

That was a fun game. I sure like playing the Suns better than the previous two sets of thugs we've had to face.

With about 20 to 25 seconds left, the Spurs let Amare go in for a slam. The play before I believe Nash went in for a layup. To me, I don't get this strategy. I think you should continue to play the game regardless of the time remaining. The Suns got within 6 points, and if wasn't for the Suns missing the rebound, they could've cut the lead to three with a 3ptr. I just think you should play the same way, and if you foul them, force them to make their free throws.

Obstructed_View
05-22-2005, 05:31 PM
You make them take time off the clock and settle for twos instead of threes. If you do that, it's mathematically impossible for them to come back, even if you shoot free throws as badly as Tony Parker seems to toward the end of games.

ALVAREZ6
05-22-2005, 05:33 PM
I agree, play all 48 minutes of the game. Giving up free points can always backfire, you never know...even though that T-mac 13 point run in the early season was is very unprobable to reoccur, you just never know.

I am still concerned on how our big men don't even help out on Nash off of pick n rolls, we need to challenge him sooner, or maybe challenge him period. Nash got a lot of free, easy shots, uncontested, and for a guard, the shots he;s hitting aren't too difficult. We need to start challenging him everytime until he starts passing to a big man and the big dude scores...

The Spurs also look like they take too long to get out on their defenders, duncan was hesitating too long to come out on Amare, and he was hitting his shots. Also, wtf was up with that perimeter defense??? We gave up so many easy 3's, Jim Jackson looked like Kyle Korver out there.
I hate how the Spurs collapse after Nash drives. I noticed that a couple of times when Nash drives, he draws all fucking 5 players to come in closer. Why? I have no clue, it's crazy. We forget about all of the Suns' three point threats.

Steve Nash makes the game so much more complicated...

It's just that if the Suns get the rebound and make a three, now it's a three point lead, and the Spurs shooting FTs, not a gimmie!!! You know, stretch the game out and let the Spurs beat you at the line. Hope Pop rips into them about that!

I recall seeing the Spurs scoring their first 10-pts in the paint...then they started to settle for outside shot attempts, what gives?
Play in the PAINT...Tim proved that in the 4th quarter...but Barry came through for us from beyond the arch. Too many weapons for the Spurs.
Duncan, Gino, Parker, Barry, and Horry...GREAT GAME!

ALL the PRESSURE in on the Suns to win Game2.

The Spurs have their split @PHX, they stole HCA, Suns are in a deep hole, under heavy pressure.

ALVAREZ6
05-22-2005, 05:37 PM
I was thinking the same twincam. The Spurs needed to stick with paint scoring, it was working in the 1st, until we shot a bunch of 3's. Bowen missed like 3 consecutive three pointers. Amare picked up 2 fouls in the 1st quarter, and we should have made him pick up his 3rd in the 2nd so he wouldn't have scored like 20 on us in the 2nd.

JUUOT
05-22-2005, 05:39 PM
Boutons, will you concede now that these spurs are tough on the road?

Horry For 3!
05-22-2005, 05:39 PM
We played pretty good today but we let Jim Jackson get too many open 3s. We also need to play better defense on Nash because he is gettin open jumpers in the lane. Marion wasn't really a factor, Stephen Hunter got all these calls and made some shots but that won't happen again. Joe Johnson might be back Game 2 but I don't know how much he will contribute. If Spurs play as good as they did today but better defense will can win Game 2. Also, Barry needs to continue his hot shooting.

What should they have done? Try and stop them and give them free throws? Or an And1? Good Job by the Spurs.

Yes! Try and stop them and keep them from getting easy baskets, especially with the Spurs FT history. All the Spurs need is for the Suns to be scoring 2's, and the Spurs missing their FT's. Making them work for a shot and use up the clock.

Aggie Hoopsfan
05-22-2005, 05:46 PM
Have you played bball before? In that situation you make them take a couple of seconds off the clock, and give them a two. You don't let them hit a three, don't let them get an And 1.

Yes I have! But you're letting them get an easy 2, and with the Spurs FT problems, it's not a good strategy. I understand what you're saying. You make your FTs and take care of business, but if you're missing them, it's a different story. TP missed that last FT, but Marion couldn't come up with the RB, so all we can do is speculate what could've happened. Knowing that the Suns would try to keep the ball out of Ginobili's hands, TP would likely be the one shooting FT's. Pop has to know that they're not a good FT shooting team, so why put pressure on themselves. I just didn't like the way it played out in the last 25 sec's or so. It's almost like the Spurs thought the game was over, and to me it wasn't!

FromWayDowntown
05-22-2005, 06:05 PM
You also can't assume that the Spurs are going to miss free throws. I'd much rather concede a layup, knowing that I'm going to get 2 free throws, than to allow the Suns to get a bucket and maybe a free throw, which is a distinct possibility. If they get 2's and you hit your free throws, they cannot make up any ground, which is the way you win. I can't really see the problem, in that situation, with handling the game that way. A bucket for the Suns does little for them, but a bucket and an and 1 would start to give them some momentum and fuel a comeback.

The Suns' pick and roll was very ineffective, considering a)the way they've been running it in the playoffs and b)the way the Spurs have defended it to this point. The Spurs were jumping out on it and really making the passes difficult, and when Nash made the pass, the guys were out of position. Nash was able to penetrate and get some close shots, which is a problem, but not a big problem, especially if Parker can score 28 a game, which looks like he'll be able to do. Duncan is going to give Amare an 18 foot jump shot every single time. What you don't want is him getting in for dunks and drawing fouls. He only had like 12 points in the paint. I'll take that any day.

Jim Jackson had a couple of open shots in the third quarter, and that's it. The Spurs held the Suns to 15 three point attempts in the game, and most of them were contested.

Steve Nash is a good player, and he's playing with a ton of confidence. If he's still scoring 30 a game by the end of the series, I'll be surprised. It will probably also mean that the Suns are losing the games.

Spurs Pull Shade on Suns

PHOENIX, May 22 (Ticker) -- Brent Barry and the San Antonio Spurs looked unstoppable in the halfcourt.

Barry scored 13 of his 21 points in a blistering fourth quarter as the Spurs looked like the team with high-powered offense in a 121-114 victory over the Phoenix Suns in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

Tony Parker scored 29 points and Tim Duncan had 28 and 15 rebounds for the Spurs, who put on a clinic on the offensive end of the floor in the fourth quarter to quickly gain the home-court advantage from the NBA's best team.

The Spurs displayed championship poise in the fourth quarter, scoring 43 points on 72 percent (16-of-22) shooting.

Barry, quiet the entire postseason, stepped up big in the final period by making three 3-pointers and all five of his shots. He made back-to-back shots from the arc 39 seconds apart to cap a 12-4 surge and give the Spurs a 106-98 lead with 4:08 remaining.

When Barry wasn't bombing away from the outside, Parker and Duncan also proved too difficult to handle. Parker used his quickness to his advantage, going to the basket to both score and setup Duncan, who looked very much like a two-time Most Valuable Player.

Amare Stoudemire overcame early foul trouble and scored 41 points and reigning MVP Steve Nash had 29 and 13 assists for the Suns, who trail in a series for the first time this postseason.

While the Spurs scored when they wanted, they also showed why they were the NBA's best defensive team during the regular season, limiting the Suns to just six fast-break points. Phoenix had been averaging 19.5 fast-break points in the postseason.

Phoenix hosts Game 2 on Tuesday.

You also can't assume that the Spurs are going to miss free throws.

pfff...yes you can.

The Suns can't protect the paint. We should be driving in every chance we get.

Agreed. I think the Spurs didn't know what to do, they were so open. It was like, "whoa, I'm open, I don't need to go to the paint, I can shoot it right here."

And didn't it pay off? I'll take 30 points of 3-pointers every day of the week, esp. at 43% TEAM shooting! (uh, thanks Barry)

Bones, Manu, TP, Timmy and R-Ho made the Suns look silly at times.

Showed good character to take the W at Phoenix. Home court advantage is very handy to steal..

Do it again, please Bones.
