The state of California will officially legalize (and tax) a previously controlled substance. Crazy.

The law isn't all that great and has some really stupid provisions in it.

yeah, a bad law in parts, but like health care reform, ya gotta start somewhere.

I read an article that the real industrial explosion and game changer would be legalization of hemp with marijuana, hemp being THE cash crop in the colonial time. America is the only country in world to criminalize hemp. Hemp be right up there with King Cotton, and maybe more important.

Frickin America is sometime so frickin perverse and stupid.

And the Federal government will file a lawsuit against the state right?

I did not know wtf hemp even was until I was in my early 20's. Cotton lobbyists pwned the top dog a hundred years ago. No one knows.

Off the top of my head the amount of space allowable for growing turns out to be a 5x5 plot. I mean come the fuck on. When Jess was telling me about it I remember there being a bunch of other stupid shit but I can't recall off the top of my head.

Actually Manny, not that the law makes any sense as written but you can grow a shitload of good dope in a 5X5 plot. Growing good pot is a lot more complicated than the average stoner realizes, though. Been there done that.

I'd love for them to legalize and tax it in Texas. I would SO be a commercial grower.

Doesn't make sense to limit commercial growers to that.

I agree it's stupid the way they do it in California...as I understand it, each "member" that a medicinal MJ club signs up the law allows the club to plant more area...but even 5X5 can still yield a lot especially on an indoor grow facility. With intensive grow procedures they could probably get 10# plus of bud a year from that 5X5 space.

The smart way to do it would be to have "certified" growers/curers/ packagers that could "brand" their product and pay a big tax to the state before retail distribution...just like liquor distilleries...

No kidding. My little 2x2 growing box yielded way more than I could use.

Y'all don't think it will pass? I thought it was gonna be a slam dunk. Even my parents, (who live in CA and are in their 70s) are voting for it. It seems like a no brainer for CA to get some $$$ coming in.

If it does pass, I assume it will get appealed, though. And then they wonder why people don't vote.

This.

I just finished spending two hours at the polling place. Some observations:

As I was walking up, some ladies were walking away saying "that was so stressful! I don't like this polling place." Not a good sign.

Of course, more than half of the staff went to lunch at 12, just when everyone leaving work for lunch (to vote) came into the polling place.

The DMV data entry person must have swapped my voter registration form with another person's (back when I registered early this year), as half of my name was associated with another address and they registered somebody else at my address.

They swapped polling centers for this year and everyone who was used to going to one place was told (after waiting in line) to go to the other polling place.

All this in mind, the people were really nice and kind. Not the worst experience ever, but definitely I hope my vote counts, because I had to file a provisional ballot.

It was a bad time for that law quite honest. You need an election with high democrat turnout to pass legislation such as that. It would have passed in 2008. 2010 was not a good time for it, however.
