And I didn't miss a decimal. He really did just get one of the worst contracts in history.
Makes Parker's contract look fantastic..

And since I respect Matt Moore's writing, it's hard (yet still a little funny) to watch him flame out.

First Rudy Gay a max contract and now Conley with 9 mil a year? If O.J. gets a max contract, I don't know what to say.

Conley has been playing better than OJ so far in this young campaign. I think this is a fair price for him.

he's actually a good player. he's probably not going to live up to that contract. he's worth 6 mil max 7 mil a year.

You do understand it's only 3 games, look at his overall production over the years. Not clearly worth 9 mil a year.

I really don't get how Grizzlies gave him $9m a year after 3 games. Even Wallace is not stupid enough to think that 11/3/5 lotto point guard is worth than MLE type money.
I mean Luis Scola only got a 47/5 contract.
Jose Canseco
11-02-2010, 12:43 AM
He's been ok. Had a very good game against Atlanta but they lost. He sucked against Dallas. Then they played Minnesota where of course he was going to play well. Three games is still only three games. I don't see how anyone can look at three games where he was actually up and down to justify $9 million a year.

Midlevel exemption at best, don't know how they are going to rebuild if they keep re-signing these players with long term big money contracts. I bet they're going to overpay O.J. Mayo, probably like 5 million less than max i presume.

stupid move for Memphis even if he does turn out to be worth it. They could have matched any offer he got next summer. Should have waited for that reason alone; factor in the likely changes in the CBA and Wallace just snatched the worst GM title back from Kahn.

Extending your RFA is the dumbest thing possible, unless that player is a franchise player.

I gotta say it's worse. At least we have our other options locked down as well. For the next couple years at least we still have Tim, Manu, Tony, Hill, Anderson, Blair, and Splitter, which isn't bad at all. After spending so much on Gay and Conley, they still gotta find a way to retain Ovinton and Gasol. And I don't get why they would want to stay at all. And if their pride is that deep that they lock in Conley that hasn't impressed greatly in his career so far, imagine what they'll pay Thabeet.

Yeah, that is true when you look at it from that angle. I really hope Stern does contract that worthless franchise next summer.

It's a bad contract based on Conley not proving thus far that he is capable of leading an NBA team but it is not worse than the Jefferson contract.
RJ from age 30 - 34 will be a miserable failure based on dollars paid. His contract is the best it will ever be right now at this moment. Whereas MC Jr. still has room to continue to grow as a player. The potential is still there. Doesn't look smart now but it can still pan out to be decent. RJ stands no chance.

From an individual standpoint, Jefferson has it worse. But a team standpoint, Conley fucked them over bad.

Conley thinks he’s worth contract (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=mc-afterthebuzzer110510)
By Marc J. Spears
Memphis Grizzlies guard Michael Conley celebrated a champagne toast with teammates Rudy Gay and Greivis Vasquez at a lounge in Beverly Hills on Monday night after signing a five-year contract extension that could pay him up to $45 million.
Not everyone considered Conley’s signing cause for celebration. The extension was widely criticized because Conley averaged 10.9 points and 4.7 assists his first three seasons. The Grizzlies still could have matched any offer made to him at the end of the season when a new collective bargaining agreement could give teams a more favorable salary scale.
Conley, 23, thinks his strong performance from the start of training camp through the first week of the season spurred the Grizzlies to resume contract talks before Monday’s deadline. He’s averaged 15.8 points, 9.2 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 3.4 steals in the Grizzlies’ first five games.
“If that’s how they feel, that’s their opinion,” Conley said of his critics. “I can’t do anything about that. What’s done is done. All I can do is control what happens on the court.
“I like the motivation I get from people criticizing me and putting me down. I will prove my worth to them. I am being paid what I am supposed to based on production.”
Conley joined Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant, Atlanta’s Al Horford, Chicago’s Joakim Noah and Phoenix’s Jared Dudley as the only members of the 2007 draft class to land contract extensions. No. 1 pick Greg Oden didn’t receive one from the Portland Trail Blazers because of his inability to stay healthy. Conley thinks his former teammate at Indianapolis’ Lawrence North High School will prove himself worthy of a new contract.
“I wouldn’t have ever thought years ago that he would be in this position due to his talent,” Conley said. “It’s an unfortunate situation that he is in.”

Yeah, Mike has looked great this season. Like a totally different player. His shot is on, he is making good decisions and he is playing faster. If he keeps this up, he will have turned into what the Grizz hoped.
That said, the contract is still something that he will have to play into to deserve. It is not something where he has earned it by what he has done. Those are always tough contracts. Sometimes you come up craps, sometimes you look good. We will see.
