View Full Version : I hate Matt Bonner.

The guy is literally worthless if his shot is off. He is a player that runs on a confidence thread. If his confidence is down (which is usually the case), the guy falters and looks like the scrub he is suppose to be. When he's on fire, the Spurs are scary good.

Why can't this guy just be a consistent player even when he's off.

If he had the decency to play better defense, maybe my opinion on him would change.

But I have to say, Pop looks like one stupid ass idiot for leaving him out there while he bricks shot after shot.

Fuck, c'mon bonner man up and play some fucking power forward style-defense.

Thankfully, I might add. Don't get me wrong. I don't personally hate Matt. But playing him against that Love/Darko frontline is putting him on a position to fail (much like guarding Griffin). I'm glad Pop didn't push the issue in the 2nd half (after the Spurs lost the lead in the 1st immediately after he walked in). I'm also glad coach Bud didn't push his luck and had him out to close the game.

Definitely agree. The lineup that got them back in the game was that Tony/Hill/Manu three guard lineup that no team seems to be able to match up with.

RJ definitely looks more comfortable at the "small ball 4" position than he did last season as well although I don't always feel comfortable going to that lineup. Those 5 players (add Duncan) are our best players though, so let them win the game for you, I guess.

tbh, his poor last two games are somewhat surprising.
Games against crappy teams like the Wolves and the Clippers are where Matt normally shoots lights out and shines. The kind of performances that make Pop think he can do the same against good teams/playoffs.

I am a long time spurs fan. Very thankful for everything Timmy, Pop and Holt has given us to be an elite franchise cause i know i will never see it again in san antonio in my life time. So i dont question much. But damn I hate Matt Bonner. At my drinking spot everybody calls him Boner. He seems like a very nice guy off the court but damn he just doesnt belong. He has had more than his share of opportunities to prove he is a clutch role player during crunch time like the ones who came before him; see Ellie, Kersey, jaren, purdue, rose, nazi, claxton etc etc etc but damn he just cant do it. I honestly do not know why Pop keeps him around. If he was to leave tommorrow i dont think that would be soon enough.

Same lineup that brought us back against NO a week ago. That's our best defensive lineup right now.

That lineup won't be getting past the Lakers in the playoffs. It can get past the smaller teams in the league and lottery teams but the lack of dominant frontline players will doom the spurs when they matchup with the Lakers.

Wondering what the Bonner supporters think we can expect from him in the playoffs. Best case scenario we get regular-season production from him, which simply isn't good enough. We can't afford to give 20-30 minutes to a player who completely disappears.
Either he needs to be transitioned off the team or scaled back to an extremely limited role or the dream is dead.

I think most supporters of bonner (and I am one) agree that his minutes should be limited if the game dictates or his performance is sub-par. I have no problem seeing bonner play 5-10 minutes or even 25-30 minutes, as long as the spurs end up the W.

Lol Popovich loves that guy.

Bonner is the Spurs version of JJ Barea. Or Joel Anthony. Coach's favorites who sooner or later will kill their teams.

I don't usually yell at my TV, but I have, countless times, yelled at my TV when Matt Bonner is playing basketball. He is a hell of a shooter, and that draws attention, spacing the floor and opening lanes. Matt is definitely a valuable player to the Spurs, with the type of offense they run. HOWEVER, his lack of speed means he has to defend players a step or two back because theyll beat him with their first step and he'll be playing behind (likely foul situation and possible and 1, with Bonner defending). When he is brought out to the perimeter, this is dangerous, and its no surprise a number of teams bring him out to free-throw extended or further and exploit the distance he gives up when playing defense. Players are not afraid of Bonner. As well, because he is SLOW AS FUCK, his defensive rotations are often behind, giving the player he is D'ing up an opportunity to get an open look coming off a screen. AND, because he gives up so much space on defensive rotations, the rest of the team has to play help D, and that gives the player coming off the screen an opportunity to pass down to an open team mate(s) that may be cutting. I've even seen Bonner just run at his assignment after just plain getting caught falling asleep, WITH HIS HANDS DOWN.

Look at the other side of the ball. Bonner can shoot, very well, but if you pressure him, he has to give the ball up. He can't handle the ball very well, so if you funnel him into the paint, he is likely going to put up some half-assed attempt at a layup or kick out an iffy pass. How many times have you seen Bonner handling the ball and just cringed? How many of his little floaters fall? But then there are games where he goes off. . .

Matt Bonner is an intelligent player, but he's not without his faults and watching him play defense fucking kills me.

On the other hand, Splitter has been getting owned down low. I know everybody is in love with him, but he gets too many 3 second calls, (still adjusting), and gets a lot of foul calls because he hasn't built a rapport with the officials and plays physical D in a league that is becoming increasingly more vaginal. He needs time to develop and is not going to peak anytime soon. I say play McDyess more often, his game is nice. He has a role and sticks to it. He has a reliable shot from the elbow/free-throw extended, usually makes safe, fundamental passes, passes into and out of the post well, doesn't take too long to defer when his shot is not there, and, most importantly, he can body up the heavier bigs in this league.

He's consistently inconsistent. When he helps the team get regular season victories, everything is good. And if this helps gives more minutes to Splitter, then all the better.

If he was consistent like tonight maybe I would begin to liken him playing in crucial junctures in the game. But fuck, he has one good game for every four bad games...I can't take that.

Especially in the playoffs.

12-06-2010, 02:28 AM
It's game 20 and as such, it ain't the playoffs. If he's scoring enough to give the starters a protracted rest throughout the regular season. That's sufficient. That's what we should want, a balanced team where the scoring comes from it's starters and not much of a drop-off from it's bench. I agree that past historical performance has shown that Bonner hasn't shown the same kind of accuracy in the playoffs, however...if him playing well means that the starters get that protracted rest, then why are we complaining? 62 games more to go, there should be more than enough time to integrate Splitter with the hope that Bonner's accuracy stays relatively high.
