just saying, i guess you feel kinda silly now worrying about such ridiculous things when a catastrophe like this brings you some kind of perspective. I mean, you're not worrying or asking advice about what color of v-neck to wear out today, are you?

What the fuck? Maybe that'd be a valid point if I was asking now but I asked in a time where there was no catastrophe. So basically NBA is ridiculous next to this too so now I'm in perspective... Fucking dumb point...

Actually, when times are tough I happen to reflect on how happy the little things such as pierced labias and my colorful t shirt collection make me.
You've got it backwards.

It doesn't seem that long ago that my area which is Brisbane, Queensland was in a very serious drought now we can't get rid of the rain. In the western part of Aus is a drought worse than the one we had. Polar opposites ay

I have been hearing about it on NPR every morning. This morning they were talking about how Brisbane is supposed to get the worst flooding they have seen in 35 years and that the run on supermarkets has already happend. I hope that everything is ok with you and your family. Please keep posting so we know you are ok.

i ascribe all these natural disasters to humans over exploitation of natural resources tbh. we should stop mining coals & crude oil right now and return to a medieval living style, then God will turn less raged at humans and will probably stop punishing humans that hard.

Have you stocked up well? Canned foods, batteries, water and all that? Get bleach now as you will need it afterwards. You can place furniture up on blocks in hopes that the water does not get too high in the house. Sandbags are a good investment. Sandbagging the doors by placing plastic down first, stack sand bags to a height that still allows access bringing the end of the plastic up under the top layer of bags making all a bit more water-tight. If you are bailing out of the house empty the refrigerator before leaving and place some sandbags in it to weigh it down. You do not want to clean smelly stuff up later and floating heavy objects can do damage. All I can think of off-hand.
And wishing the best for you.

We've got enough food for at least 2 weeks and all doors are plasticed and sandbagged so just gotta hope it holds or we don't need them. We've been flooded twice last year but not as bad as the predictions, we've got electronics up from floor downstairs and whatnot. Batteries is something we could use definitely. We have some not enough
Thanks all for thoughts, will keep posted. Its 7:30am here, worse expected 2:30pm local time

Ahh yes there was a big big flood in 1974 and predictions say it may reach the same. I'm not sure about run on supermarkets but I'm sure its happened. Thanks for thoughts mate

Whats fucked is our prime minister saying she can give 13million dollars from the federal government right now but they're happy to spend upwards of 1billion over the next 3-4 years on stupid fucking boat people and Indonesia.
When her own voters are suffering she still can't get her head out of her ass.
PS Good luck, I've been catching bits and pieces on sky news 24/7 coverage, but that water will take ages and I can't imagine the type of shit thats gunna be found there. There are some pretty sad stories coming out and only going to get worse.

if you going to blame the PM, you should also blame ur state government, they had the opportunity to co-operate with the other 2 southern states to build a pipeline that would channel most of queenslands flood waters to the other states storages running low on water. Both levels of govts are slow to react on aid and shit to the ppl out there in the community affected by the floods.
this will hurt queensland and australias economy, but it aint that bad imo.
i guess this country is not mentally and physically prepared for this type natural disasters even after learning from usa katrina, or the victorian bushfires....we aint a 3rd world country, we should be well equip to handle this shit, but we waste more time talking a load of horseshit then implementing solutions to the problems due to govt red tape and bullshit from stake holders.

Not from QLD, from NSW, but building a pipeline is a pretty bad financial move too. That would have taken years to build and as you pointed out the governments would have spent half the time talking shit about how it should be done. No pipeline would hold that kinda water anyway. The dam the QLD gov't built to stop this kind of event occuring after the 1974 floods reached 120% capacity and had to be released.
The Australian government isn't slow to aid the rest of the world however, always trying to show to the rest of the world how we help when no gives a fuck about us.
We'll have to wait and see how much is put into the infrastructure of QLD after the clean-up begins to really see what the both state and federal governments do.

the states shouldve handed over control of the water system to the federal govt instead of trying to play politics, the pipeline will be a long project to finish just like the current NBN, but there will be benefits when its finish instead of wasting money building desal plants. A pipeline will allow better allocation of water where its needed, instead of the current system where they just suck out one communities water storage supplies to another.

From a newsletter:
"The area underwater now is bigger than Texas, bigger than France and Germany combined, and covers 75 percent of Queensland -- home to 4.5 million souls."
Brisbane is 27d S, while SA is 29d N, subtropical, and both have about 2M people metro area.

Amen, brother.
The analysis I have read is that it will hit the Australian economy to the tune of 1% of GDP.
The economic impact is likely to be harsh, on best guesses cutting Australian growth this year by up to 1%.
Queensland, like Western Australia, had been enjoying a boom, fuelled by commodities. It accounts for three-fifths of Australia’s black-coal exports. Many mines have now been flooded, and railway lines ruined. Sugar cane and cotton, two other big commodities, have been badly hit. The prime minister, Julia Gillard, has promised any money needed to help rebuild Queensland’s infrastructure. Yet she also insists that her pre-flood pledge to bring the federal budget into surplus by 2012-13 still stands. Like the Wivenhoe dam, something may have to give.

It never ceases to amaze me why people build in known flood plains. Just because it hasn't flooded in 35 years, and the Realtor convinces you it's a "100 year flood" doesn't man shit.

It is possible to build houses on sealed caissons that float.
The plumbing and so forth comes with flexible joinst that allow the house to rise.
The Dutch are building homes that will float off their foundations during floods:
