View Full Version : A Black Mark on the NBA: WORST Nielsen Ratings In Finals History

It’s highlighted for you in the table below. The Spurs are the lone carriers of these utterly shameful marks, similar to the European Black Death during the middle ages. The Celts also contributed (albeit once) to super extremely low ratings. Spurs and their rabid fan base should be impaled to the tree of woe...
My ST friends… hear me out….after looking at metrics it’s painfully obvious and absolutely imperative for the sake and integrity of the game itself that the San Antonio Spurs get nowhere near the NBA finals. The Spurs would be a catastrophic and monetary disaster of epic proportions for the league… David Stern and the Owners would self-destruct no hyperbole….
the Spurs consistent piss poor ratings cuts at the very heart of the league and sends out a strong anti-NBA message.
I’m in no way trying to be controversial but it’s crystal clear that no one outside of SA wants to see them play beyond the regular season. Not even their peers. :lmao 1%
I do think that Stern realizes this and he gets it… The Spurs playing well in the regular season is a good thing because it galvanizes / excites the local rabid fan base and keeps a decent revenue stream flowing. However, when the stakes are much higher (playoffs), I think Stern should give the EDICT from up above to ensure the Spurs have an early exit just like last year.
Yes for the sake of the league…if the Spurs refuse to do the honorable thing and bow out gracefully then I’m openly advocating collusion and cheating against them during the playoffs…
The Lakers will take care of the Spurs but the point is to increase the ratings for the real windfall profits ( LA vs Boston), by essentially giving Kobe more rest and shortening the series against the Spurs as needed.
Absolutely nothing personal at all but this should be done on the basis of a sound and robust business case / model. (I’m sure at least Tony Parker would support this concept)
The Spurs might fit the image of good ole’ boys but in these hard economic times …David Stern just gotta do what David Stern gotta do…he has my full support…

It's the NBA's own damn fault... they never hype the spurs and then get what they deserve when we are the only team left standing.
But honestly what do you care? If the Spurs are on prime time in June it just gives you the opportunity to catch up on Glee.

I could talk the old lady into mimicking that video, but, it would be an ordeal. She'd have to shop for the panties for a week. When she was finished she'd have 20 pairs of assorted panties, but, nary a one like the above pair. + she'd have half an entire new wardrobe and two sets of plush towels for the bathrooms. Then she'd have to wash the pillow so her precious snatch wouldn't be bothered by duck down. Then she'd disinfect me, brush my teeth and make me promise to go for a walk with her afterward. Then she'd turn off all the lights and I could watch.
Shit, upon retrospect aside from the walk it ain't a half bad scenario.

I actually think it's interesting that the Spurs-Knicks finals had more viewers than last season's Lakers-Boston finals. Really shows why the league is desperate to build a competitive team in NY.

While world wide they reached 105 million viewers in 2005 finals with Detroit it is estimated that the 2007 finals, while recieving poor ratings in the United States, was seen by 150 million viewers, the largest ever for an NBA finals through more than 250 international media from 23 countries and territories will converge in San Antonio and Cleveland.
The all time high of 200 million viewers for an NBA game remains, however, a regular season game that featured Yao Ming vs. Yi Jianlian in 2007.

This thread is pretty stupid. I mean most NBA fans already know this but don't really give a shit. The NBA doesn't give a shit too. The NBA is not a highly watched sport. Even with Jordan, the ratings were not spectacular. The highest rated Jordan's Finals does not even come close to the ratings that the last episode of Friends got. True story. When Stern and his minions brag about any type of Finals ratings increase, it's laughable. It's laughable because the Spurs and other certain teams dragged the ratings so down that when a team like the Celtics or Lakers are in the Finals, any increase will be praised because the ratings were low in the first place. I hate the Spurs and wish nothing but the worst for them but they're a great team and have performed excellent in the Finals. However, the national media does not give a shit about them or San Antonio. I know it's mean but it's the truth. The national media historically jizzes over NY and LA.

Anyone with an ounce of sense (that leaves out the OP) can tell right away that large market teams have higher ratings. Spurs vs NY, higher ratings. Two small market teams = low ratings. Ring looks just as good though.
Fuck the league.

A celtics/spurs finals will get quality ratings. Most of it has to do with the weak opposition. see spurs/pistons got respectable ratings.
We're a small market team from south texas. We get it. But we're also the most winningest team in Sports for the past 12 years. Go find those ratings and post 'em.

Completely Stern's fault for not marketing Ginobili when he was phenomenally athletic
mYFJ91zcPVc
C6zTNDxl7P0
Now, about 4+ years too late, ESPN will occasionally throw out the "Wow Ginobili alone is worth the price of admission" line but it's too little too late.
Spurs are already blacklisted as a boring team by the media. Ginobili's acrobatic plays aren't hyped up enough to generate interest, and it doesn't even matter because Ginobili only has a fraction of the athleticism he used to have back in the day so circus solo shots by him are at a minimum in this day and age.

The "Black Mark on the NBA" has more to do with self-hating MJ not appearing in any more Finals. Since then, the NBA's looked for the next MJ but Kobe and Lebron have shown they can't sell Finals up to MJ's level.
99 SPURS: 11.3
02 Lakers: 10.2
10 Lakers: 10.6
09 Lakers: 8.4

They probably only survey people living in NY & LA for their "ratings" so who gives a flying fuck about that.
And if Lebron is so popular and "marketed" by the league then he should get the lion's share of the blame for the poor ratings in the 2007 finals.
OP is just a butthurt lakers fan having a tantrum, nothing else.

I tried softening the blow I delivered in my OP...but since you guys insist...I'm gonna abuse you some more...
Spurs Finals (last game ratings) these are the last game of the series ratings only. I previously posted my executive summary of these ratings in my OP...
1999 Game 5 – 11.0 rating
2003 Game 6 – 7.5 rating
2005 Game 7 – 11.9 rating
2007 Game 4 - 6.5 rating
So overall the ratings for the Spurs were up in 1999 and again in 2005…If you look closely at the Final game of the series rating that I list above it clearly shows Spurs getting a bump because in 99 they played NY so it obviously helped their ratings and again in 2005 they played the defending Champion Pistons at the time so that clearly helped them as well. The Spurs simply can't draw based on their own Merit.
Now let’s consider the modern day Lakers last game of the series in the finals:
2000 Game 6 – 14.7 rating
2001 Game 5 – 11.2 rating
2002 Game 4 – 10.8 rating
2004 Game 5 – 13.8 rating
2008 Game 6 – 10.7 rating
2009 Game 5 – 8.0 rating
2010 Game 7 – 18.2 rating (only in the Spurs wet dream could they achieve this)
The conclusion is that LA is consistently a much better draw than the Spurs…it doesn’t matter who we play…even though Orlando did drag us a bit. But the Spurs hold the most ominous record. Why would Stern market Manu when he has Kobe…Manu can’t sell shit except gay pride t-shirts…and why would Stern market Timmy when he has Shaq…what and who is Duncan going to appeal to…the sloth footed crowd?
Face it dude the Spurs are a drag on the NBA brand and what absolutely makes this all the more worse for Spur fan is that around the country people really HATE Kobe and people generally Like Duncan and yet Kobe is still a bigger draw. :lmao

the spurs "play" TBH was never boring. Offensively they were a bit conservative IMHO BEFORE this year ...but as someone that appreciates defense, the Spurs (especially 99) played some of the best. Their in bounds-plays were stuff i used with some of my own teams i have coached.
But the spurs never cultivate any true personalities ...and that is what TNT, ESPN and ABC (NBC/CBS) coveted most. They have NEVER been able to replace MJ or the greatness of the 80's ...so they manfacture stars. And no not Kobe, he is a proven winner ...but many of the so called stars do not pay the price to master their craft that Kobe, Duncan, Manu and the WINNERS in the NBA do.
But the reason style is preffered over substance:
1. the Jordan effect (media/Stern need to replace MJ) even though MJ had GREAT fundamentals ...people focused on the highlights. not his foot work and form.
2. the And I era (poor teamwork and execution) at the expense of showboat play
3. ESPN/Sportscenter for focusing on dunks and crap like "the Decision", melo-drama and the Kobe/Shaq feud instead of focusing on the solid play of the spurs
Most casual sports fan want the sizzle without the steak. Lakers give you both ...spurs only the steak that is why the media doesnt give them the love they deserve.
Now hill and Parker recently have made some off-court buzz but the organization sweeps it under the rug and since you dont have much of a national following it caused barely a riplple.
In L.A.? If Odom was banging Brian shaw's wife it would be the media apocalypse ...sorry for the rant ...but though no spur fan, i do appreciate good basketball.

Ratings shouldn't matter. The NBA apparently loves divas, douchebags, pussies, and rapists(Lebron, Wade, Carmelo, and Kobe) right now. Ducan isn't one of those so the NBA does not want the fans to care about him. Probably one of the best big men in the history of the NBA but he doesn't have drama so the NBA is basically like "who cares". The NBA has become a joke ever since Jordan left the Bulls in 1998. Actually, it could be a joke even without it. The lack of parity definitely hurts the sport. Right now in the NFL, there are no dynasties. There is basically a new champion every year. The same could be said for baseball and hockey. When two teams own half of the sport's championships, it makes you wonder if your team has a legitimate chance of winning 1 championship. Parity does not exist in the NBA and has never really existed when you think about it. Just look at the Western Conference. There have only been 3 teams(Spurs, Mavs, and Lakers) that have won the Western Conference since 1999.

Yep "Top 10 Plays of the Day" are almost always dunks. JR Smith's dunk over Neal got so much airplay you would think it was the winning basket. You would never know the Nuggets lost that game. That wasn't even important.
Ginobili's defense to take a charge on that last play was incredible. He read it perfectly. It got no mention except in the game analysis.

You are almost certainly bi-curious. Maybe you haven't sucked a cock, but I would bet good money you've held one in your mouth until it went limp.

All that's missing is a Blair-bashing thread and I'd almost swear DMC is Spurstrodamus.

The only dark mark is the stain on your underwear Koolaid. Learn how to wipe bro. Also, read a book you dumb fuck so you don't have to be part of the group that fills the remedial classes in public schools. Come on man, get your shit together.

What's worse, repeatedly making that lame ass menstrual cycle joke or being the only one to laugh at it?
With as much self-cred as you have been infected with, one would think you would feel pressured to produce fresh material.
I guess some people set low standards for themselves and reward themselves for getting there.

Also, DMC, get a grip. You sound like a fucked up tool who takes himself too seriously. Stop fooling yourself! You're just another poster on a NBA forum.

Not bad Koolaid. Seems like you've read more books than I thought. Still doesn't explain why 90% of your posts are unintelligible and doesn't relate to anything on the NBA. Seriously, I could go to the How to
Eliminate Floaters in the Toilet forum or the How to Prevent Getting the Clap forum and get better basketball discussion. Still, I'm impressed with your Adam and Eve knowledge. Maybe next you can tell me about Noah or Jacob or I Love Lucy.

You might need to trim my dirty inch first. I have a grundle that you could raise exotic animals in. It could have some shit cakes as well, no guarantees. After you lick that, wake me up and I will roll over so you can suck my cock. Don't be too rough, watch the teeth, it's not a chew toy.

of course I've licked a bitches ass a time or ten...only Special occasions though...not gonna lie...but there's a technique to it...first you stick a couple fingers in her ass to make sure there's no shit in there...:lmao I could put this in flowchart format but it's not worth it...Clean - Yes? or No? If No then it's a no go...wipe the shit off your fingers onto her ass and get up...Yes? You make her lick your fingers then start at the gooch and work your way up...:hat
simple as that son...:lol
