Ever since Interscope records arrived on the show...the show has nosedived badly...

Even though this years talent is way above any other season-these "producers" have completely sterilized every contestant....

these "genius" producers are a good glimpse into why music has generally gone in the shitter the past few years...every record company has their own version of these guys.

Stefano-HAD the music in him...he could move you to tears when he sang and poured his heart out...last night ...they said it was a Motown theme...so these genius producers gave him the song "Hello" by Lionel Ritchie....Motown era? this was an 80's song.
Even though Stefano had already stated that his idol was Stevie Wonder--they gave him that cheesy Ritchie song :lmao...
then they instruct him to open his eyes...J Ho tells him to be an actor when he sings...:lmao...this kid already had music living inside him...when he sang...he would just transport himself to a place few performers get to...so they try to strip that away from him so he can "connect" with the audience...
All I know is that -before- they tried helping him...he was consistently giving people those "goose bumps" moments...what a disgrace...

The "Hook" of that song is when it builds up to the part where Martha and the Vandellas arrive to scream, "yeah,yeah yeah yeah...yeah yeah"

The only real good performance was the Durbin kid...he seems to be getting better...

The country kid...they give him a Stevie Wonder song....someone who's vocal key/range is nowhere in the same universe as this kids range...the first verse is LOW..and he can kinda make it interesting...the rest of the song is the kid trying to sing a high range that leaves him straining worse than I do in the shower...he should'a sang some Lou Rawls or something that enhanced his voice...

Don't kid yourself thinking that these contestants pick their own songs...these producers are trying to mold these kids so they can sell records as soon as the show season ends...

This is also why very few Idol contestants actually make great music after leaving the show...they are just doing what these companies and producers tell them to do---and these producers have no fuckin' clue as to what makes good music.

It seemed like this might be a promising group...but if Interscope is here to stay...I guess...fuck this show...I might watch one more week of this ...

Was hoping they kept him for the tour. He's a distinct performer and I think he brings something different. If Haley (was in the top 8, wow) would have been at the bottom she'd be going home. But Casey brings such variety to an already varied Top 10 that it's hard to not bring him on tour for some fun performances. They did the right thing, all Top 11 win in some way.

I know everyone has their own flavor in music and what a good singer is. Casey's style, voice, just isn't a voice I would listen too. I don't think he has a good voice or is AI material. I think Casey is more of a "Weird Al Yankovich" kind of character. Espacially with that "crazy look" in his eyes.

Yeah, there was a package they showed where Pia wasn't wearing makeup and was wearing glasses. She looked much better, at least to me, than when she's all dolled up (even though I have no problem with her when she's performing either).

Still, it boggles my mind how Naima and Paul are still around. Casey deserved to be saved last night I think just because of his creativity, although I do think he needs to stop with all the growling and the weird/creepy facial expressions.

The judges are terrible. While Lopez and Tyler started off alright, over the past few weeks they've just been stroking everyone's ego. That, coupled with the producers adding all of this noise to the songs, has really made the show incredibly boring.

AI needs a judge to tell it like it is. To give them constructive criticism. To tell them they sounded like a "cat being thrown off a ten story building". To tell them they just didn't sound good enough to stay on the show. They don't need to be told they sounded "beautiful" ala Steven Tyler, when they didn't. Or that they are starting to scratch the surface (JLo). I think that the contestants after hearing Simon's critique, they really did try to improve b/c they respected him. They respected Simon's experiance in the music industry.

Wow. I finally this week's show and man what a disappointment it was. Stephano and Thia did not belong in the bottom 3. And Casey did not deserve the save at all. Them stopping it was a bit dramatic and a little stupid. Were they running out of time? Casey, Paul, and maybe Haley need to go so the competition gets better. Scotty did really good. He made it his own, like they said. Pia sounded great. Shakes did good. Thia surprised me but Casey and Paul still annoy me. And the "judging"......man, are they judging on the performance just done or the performance they want to hear? Casey was solely saved by that thinking and it was stated clearly by JLo. What a rip off.

Only thing good about the results show was Stevie singing. Awesome. So was having Bob Babbit play on the show. He's a true legend of Motown. I don't know if I've posted about this on ST before, but if you're a fan of music and especially Motown, you have to check out Standing in the Shadows of Motown. It's a great documentary about the Funk Brothers. The unsung heroes that played on alllllllllllllllllllll the Motown hits recorded in the Snake Pit before Motown left. There's this one part where they play a song live. I don't remember the tune. Anyway, they add each part of the tune showing how the tune was arranged. When all the parts are playing, you can close your eyes and it sounds like you're listening to the actual tune sans vocals. It's amazing. There's also tunes done with known artists. Meshell N'degeocello, Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, etc that just rock.

To me it's clear that the producers of AI want to take this show to a higher level, but by doing so they're forgetting what got the viewers attention to this show. And that's the talent and judging!! Last year it was easy to blame Ellen Degeneres for the lame judging, and rightfully so. This year what's the excuse? JLo and Steven Tyler were suppose to breath new life into AI, but instead we get an "Oh golly, everyone sounds beautiful" response. The technicians, sound people, record producers who are suppose to be helping the contestants all are terrible!! When the judges used that save card on Casey, and then that horrible acting job by everyone, it's very clear to me that American Idol has "jumped the shark"! :(

Paul seems like he just can't get invested into a song emotionally. The beginning of Rocket Man was good because its very soft and low, but when the song picks up he kept his same weird/soft/odd voice going on and it just didn't help him. He isn't very good.

Thia is just way too boring.

Any of those three should be going home. I really liked Casey tonight and I always have, sans Smells like Teen Spirit. That's why I was glad they used the save on him last week.

Haley has grown on me, and she's one of my favorites. Maybe because she seems down to earth and I actually like her voice. Her performance of Bennie and the Jets wasn't quite what I expected at first, but after viewing it again a couple of times I did like it.

I think Jacob, Lauren and Scotty are overrated. Jacob just hasn't really gotten any better since he sang God Bless the Child. We know he can sing but he sounds the same every week.

I don't think Stefano did that great this week but he also didn't do bad. I thought it was a smart decision to pick a popular song in Tiny Dancer since he was on the verge of elimination last week.

James is clearly the best performer of the group and that helps him since people probably overlook his vocals sometimes.

I really liked James, Pia and Haley today. I normally don't like Haley at all. Casey and Scotty were pretty good, everyone else was just okay to me.

The Casey I loved showed back up .... he and Haley were my favorites tonight (I've liked Haley, though :)). I liked James tonight and I'm normally not a fan.

The producers didn't screw this one up as bad as the last couple of weeks...and it is hard to make a 6 to 7 minute song like Tiny Dancer sound good in a minute and a half...but otherwise, they didn't destroy the song completely.

Paul ruined Rocket man...no surprise there at all...he should have been sent home a few weeks ago.

Naima...same thing...she gets worse every week instead of getting better.

Durbin was ok...but everyone seemed to over-praise him...he is this years Adam Lambert...they are promoting him so he can be in the top 3.

Casey...nice version of Your Song...I had forgotten that he had such a cool tone in his voice.

Jacob...some great phrasing and some cool lines in the song...but the ending left me a little ...meh.

Thia...beautiful tone ...even though people are calling her boring...her tone is pure..but here, the producers didn't do her any favors and she (or they) didn't hit the hook of the song Daniel ...she seemed to just shy away from hitting the notes in the hook...but boy, she is gonna break some hearts in the future...she is stunning.

Pia...nice..but very safe...plus I didn't care too much for that song.

Haley..nice pop rendition...she actually had her "moment"...surprised me.

If the Producers can step up their game...or better yet...not get too intrusive...it might still be a good end to the season.

Hopefully Paul and Naima get sent home...but I get a feeling they will let Stefano go and keep Paul...who really sucks. Stefano is the most underrated and if he chooses good songs...he is my darkhorse.

It certainly is interesting how everyone's definition of a good singing voice differs. I guess there is no right or wrong. To each his own! I'm at the other end of the spectrum with Casey. I think he has one of the worst voices along with Paul among the guys. "Your Song" IMO, exposed his weak vocals. The past weeks it seems Casey has tried to impersonate others artists never singing in his real voice. This past week the truth came out.

I definitely did not like that performance either. Casey does not have the best voice in the competition, but what he lacks there he makes up for in creativity and diversity.

1. Jacob- His best performance in my opinion.

2. Scotty- My boy tried something different and it worked!!! :clap

3. Lauren- IMO best female vocals! I think her best performance!

4. James- Good song choice. IMO, his best performance!

5. Pia- Good vocals again...BUT, she looked uncomfortable and there still was a little screaming. Not spectacular!

Yeah. I have the impression the producers are pushing their will too much on the contestants. I'm not for coddling them BUT staying in line with past seasons, past criteria, I think they're trying a little too hard to shape the artist even before the winner is picked. 1. Jacob - The man has a powerful voice, but has extreme difficulty controlling it leading to pitch issues and consistent tone.
2. Stefano - (Not sure how to spell his name) He should be gone. He just has the look young adolescent girls like. Personally, I think he looks constipated when he sings. His singing is only slightly above average.
3. Haley - Worst female left. All she has going for her is the growl. Aside from that, pitch problems everywhere.
4. Casey - Probably the most muscially talented overall. His voice is kinda shaky on certain annunciations. Don't expect him to win, but he can be quite entertaining.

6. Scott - Great country singer. Needs to work more on his stage presence. Good chance to win it.

Yeah, if you say that each one has a gimmick, then Pia's was her ballads and always ending on a power note. She always ended her song by picking up her head and singing that power note.

Casey- So much has been written about him being the most musically inclined contestant and a gifted artist. (Sigh!) There has been many before him that play multiple intstruments. They all sang very well!!! Casey doesn't sing well at all! Too me he looks like he's not to be taken seriously. He's more of a comedian than anything else. I don't think Stefano gets many teen votes -- he's almost always in the bottom three and he's too short for girls to like that much. I think that Paul and Scotty probably capitalize on the teenage girl vote. Scotty is good though -- Paul , not so much. To me Paul should be singing in small bars, not on American Idol.

I think the best voices were Pia and Jacob (and even Thia). I think the best performers are James and Scotty. I'm not a fan of Lauren and Haley -- they might be next to go and just have an all-male Idol. :downspin:

I'm 39 ... not exactly considered a part of a younger generation - at least according to my kids. :lol

I like him because he's jazzy and quirky (and funny). I've spent a lot of time around jazz bands growing up, and actually in one for a very short period of time, so I'm inclined to like it. And he also reflects a lot of my personality. Although, I'm not a fan of the crying and drama and theatrics.

I've watched most of the seasons, and this is the best group of singers I've ever heard. I think a majority of it is the last reason you gave. We are seeing smug contestants that don't believe they need to change what they are doing, when (presumably) a lot of America thinks so. In past seasons, you didn't have contestants with heads this big already because of Simon. They would be forced to change it up because Simon would not let a contestant just cruise along doing the same thing every week, a la Scotty or Jacob.

I think the lack of critical judging has left America not really knowing who was good that night, and who wasn't. Therefore, it largely becomes a popularity contest; and as we see on this site, once you pick a favorite you kind of stick with them.

Also, when Simon was around, it seems like he made Randy a better judge. Now, Randy seems unsure of what to say because he doesn't know if someone will agree with him if he thought it was bad, so instead he just takes the safe route.

I don't think it's a younger thing either. I just like his style. His jazzy feel while still keeping true to some of the songs he sang appeals to me. It's just what I like to listen to. I've always been a classic rock guy, so James appeals to me a bit too (although admittedly I'm not a big fan of James).

I don't see what people see in Scotty either. He is a one-trick pony, and yet people still think he's great every week, while I disagree. He's boring and predictable to me. But I assume it's just the kind of music you like to hear. I wouldn't doubt that you enjoy country music. Country, for me, isn't my first choice in music.
