So, I was browsing around on Newegg yesterday looking for deals to add to my current system, and my fiancee noticed me looking through some parts. She said, "You should just build a new computer and buy it." I played it off like she was joking, but she wasn't, and said we could afford to splurge a bit on the system. So I put together a rig and pulled the trigger. :tu

I ended up spending more money than I anticipated, but the upside of this system is that I will not need to seriously upgrade any parts for the next 4-5 years other than adding a second 6950 in probably 2014. I can't wait to get this thing in my house and slap it together!

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost). The Sandy Bridge is the newest architecture from Intel. I almost went with an AMD Hexacore processor here, but upon reviewing the benchmarks, I really couldn't turn down going Intel. They are just better than AMD for processing power now, especially for games. The overclocked i5 will actually outperform i7 in a lot of applications, so it made sense to save money here and go with the cheaper CPU. Plus, my Q6600 has been such a beast of a processor that I kind of feel like it's worth it to stay with Intel in this stage.

ATI Radeon 6950 with 2 GB of memory. This thing is awesome for the price. I almost went with a GTX 570, but considering this is $60 cheaper, I could put that $60 toward a crossfire solution in the future. The flashed version of the 6950 makes it a 6970, which offers performance on par with the 570 and actually will outperform it due to the extra memory (2 GB vs 1280mb) at high resolutions.

This is my first truly "dream" system since I bought a Dell XPS2 laptop with the 6800 Ultra (a GPU even desktops didn't have at the time). Man, I'm totally stoked about it.

This will also be the first time I've assembled a computer from scratch in quite a while. I'll probably be throwing an aftermarket cooler on the CPU in the near future, but for now I just want it to get here so I can max out Bad Company 2 and pwn some noobs.

About $1200 after rebates, MIG. Not bad considering everything on it is essentially top of the line except the CPU which is insanely overclockable. Some people have even got it up to 4.6 Ghz. :wow

The GPU is a step down from the 6970 but can be flashed to be just as fast. It's not quite as fast as the 5970, but I wasn't about to throw down $600 for a video card. :lol

Edit: Also, I'm selling my old desktop probably for ~$350-400, so the total cost of this system will only set me back 800ish bucks.

If that happens I just flash the GPU back to it's original clock setting, it shouldn't be a problem at all. Literally all the flash does is unlock the extra cores to make it a 6970. Lifetime warranty on the card as well. :tu

By 24, I assume you mean a new monitor? Nice man. I tried the G17 and actually hated it. It's a huuuuuuuge keyboard, and when I play Starcraft I need a lot of efficiency so I can tell where all my control groups are. I use a basic no frills keyboard now and it's great for RTSing.

This computer probably will not need to be upgraded for a minimum of 3 years, and when I do I'll probably just buy a $90 (at the time) 6950 to give me Crossfire performance and then go right back to running games at near max resolution and detail levels. Also, this is a major splurge on a computer, I could have spent $450 and got a system that would game pretty well. It basically amounts to the fact that you could spend $15,000 on a Honda Civic and have a hell of a lot of fun driving it balls out around a racetrack, but you get even more enjoyment if you go with a 350Z that just blasts through corners and can be tuned for even more performance. Same basic experience but different levels of potential enjoyment.

And to be honest, I would rather sink my money into a computer than blow it elsewhere. I was looking at a $200 straight edge razor to shave with prior to this. :lol Now I have an excuse to be frugal for the next few months and save up some money again.

its only a problem when cpu is bottlenecking the vga card not keeping up with it, or ur not happy with ur frame rates....still i think that 3ghz could be overclocked to 4ghz, i assume ur running a e8400 cpu?? a video card is probably ur next upgrade, nothing major since thats still a good cpu one of the best overclockers...

So basically I'm limited to one video card (no crossfire) and 3.2 GB of RAM, because Vista won't accept more. If he would have invested a little more in it, I wouldn't have to upgrade to a whole new system now, but now that the new GPUs are out, there is no time like the present.

Me, I'm still with my 4 year old desktop, and it does everything I need it to do. I don't have the money to blow on another computer, especially when this one is still kicking and running pretty fast.

I just want to upgrade the monitor to a little bigger size because I watch TV on it, and possibly add another video card so I can watch stuff with an HDMI cable for better resolution.

I already discussed turning this monitor into a small TV. Hell, I may just throw my 360 on it so I can game while watching the Spurs game on the side. As nice as it is to game on a bigger TV, sometimes I wouldn't mind having a smaller monitor. Helps me focus on everything a little better. A bigger TV means more area to cover with your peripheral vision.

It's got the potential to be huge. The setup I bought has 2 USB 3.0 ports. Data transfer up to 4.8 GB/sec.

Probably won't be the massive change that 2.0 was though, which allowed for the powering of devices via the USB connection.

I want this monitor to use as another TV in my kitchen so I don't miss Spurs games while I'm cooking (I'm like the guy in the radio spots).

Now I know what you're thinking, why not use the bigger monitor to watch TV? Simple answer, this 19" monitor has speakers built in that are pretty good for TV viewing, but not so much for music. The next monitor I get probably won't have built in speakers, so yeah.

I've seen some LG LED monitors going for about $160 refurbished on Overstock. I'm not against refurbished stuff as I've actually had good success buying some items like that.

I run a decent Onyoko HTIB I've had for years. Its not amazing but it gets the job done and now that I no longer have my own four walls it is really moot since I'm afraid to turn it up. We only really have one neighbor (one lady next to us is deaf and the other just use their condo as a vacation home) but she can already hear me when I watch Spurs games so I'd feel bad if I turned it up very much at other times.

One thing that made me go with the 6950 vid card is that it offers a double lifetime warranty (parts and labor). Can't beat that. Wish they offered that for computer displays. :downspin:

Yeah, the multi-unit living would bug the shit out of me. I watch and play at near reference levels.

There is no way you could do that with paper-thin walls.

My problem is that I have 2 young kids, so I couldn't turn up a surround sound system even if I wanted to as I do most of my gaming and movie watching when they're asleep, so I can concentrate.

I also want a speaker sound bar. I can't afford wireless, and I don't want my kids messing with the wires. A speaker bar should suit my needs just fine. That way I get much better sound (TV speakers are so crap) without having to crank up the volume too much.

My thing right now is I want 3 things between $150-$200 and I have to decide which one I can't wait on. I want the monitor (probably will wait), the speaker bar, and another Wii just so I can play Tiger Woods golf and Super Mario Wii. My kids have completely taken over my Wii, and while I play my 360 more, sometimes I wouldn't mind putting in 18 holes. I'm leaning towards the Wii as it's the most expensive of them all and something I can buy right away. Plus, I'm keeping that Wii in my room so I can play a few holes while keeping my kids away.

I have a Wii and I have the games. Getting a PS3 and a Move is just a needless expense for me. Getting another $200 Wii to go with the games I already have is a much better option.

I'm just looking for one that does what it's supposed to do, and nothing more either, so the Kindle seems just right. You do get better about it as you get older. I used to spend money like water on shit that I only used for a short time.

That acoustic foam is just plain ugly. Plus, there are much better products that absorb the mid-high frequencies. It doesn't soundproof in the least, but it does stop sound from ringing/reflecting like crazy. With my vaulted ceiling, it would ring like a sumbitch with bare walls. Unfortunatly, I'm not able to place them where they are recommended to go; first reflection points.

I put up a few panels not long ago and it changed the sound dynamic of my room 10 fold. These are 2'x4', 2" thick rigid insulation; three up front and three in the back:

What type of audio set-up do you guys run when gaming? That buttkicker thread I started died a quick death which kind of surprised me. I figured one or two of you twats had given it a whirl at some point.

There are very few games that have solid audio mixes. BC2 is one of them and I just got around to playing it. It's often overlooked, but quality sound enhances the experience for me.

I also give a long cry whenever I go over to AVS and look at some of their theater builds. Why can't I game on a 14' screen hitting 110 dBs?

Still play on Prince, have beaten the game every way you can but by no means do I "win" every time. AI is still a total warmonger.

Its not nearly as in-depth as fully expanded Civ4, but its damn good.

I am starting to figure out how to effectively produce and use Great People. They have FAR more significance in 5 as opposed to 4.

Expansion is interesting, but problematic. Still hate that you cant vassal mothertruckers. Just the other day I was playing as Ghandi who has unhappiness from city population reduced by 50%, but has unhappiness from number of cities increased by 50% (low # of high pop cities = culture and economy). I was killing it in culture and wonders. AIs relationship with you is described in one word (Friendly, Neutral, Guarded, Hostile), I thought I had seen them all until Persia came up as "Afraid" of me. I had never seen that before...turns out since I had the most successful economy and flourishing culture, other AIs were just straight in awe of my civ. Persia was deathly afraid for no reason, would constantly ring me up with real kiss-ass, "please show me how to lead" comments. Funny thing, outside of barbarians, I won that game without ever firing a shot (Utopia).

Anyway, the game is damn good once you get over the differences from Civ4. Combat is waaaaaaaaaay better, although the AI generally sucks at it (Tip: ABPD = Always Be Playing Defense). One adjustment I had to make was reserve units in any war. Another nice change is a more balanced approach to having a Navy. In Civ4, you could go a whole game without ever building one ship (I normally didnt), whereas in 5, thats not really an option (unless youre playing a Pangea-type map, I never do).

City States...I hated them at first. I thought they accounted for too much in the end game (namely UN voting) and offered too little up until that point. My how things change. I think my aversion to them at first was more because I hadnt yet figured out how to properly manage the economy in Civ5. Now that I got that on lock down, I have disposable income to float around to various City States.

Ive found, as a total amateur player, that they key to Civ5 is to be in a constant Golden Age. Whether by building a wonder, unlocking a particular social policy (or policies) or blowing a Great Person to extend an existing GA, being in a perpetual Golden Age separates me from the pack early and often (Production, Science and Gold go through the roof). It isnt uncommon for me to be in a Golden Age for 30+ turns, 4-5 times per game.

All around, I love it. Perfectly paced game for me, doesnt require loads of attention, no e-peen fuckwad online douchebags to deal with and with an almost limitless replay value. Admittedly, I am extremely interested in the sure to be in development expansions. A lot of potential in Civ5 to do some really different things in the turn based strategy genre.

well, the way ive always thought about investing in a high powered computer is like purchasing both an xbox and ps3 because most games are eventually converted to the PC. plus, you can do a seemingly unlimited amount of things with a computer (office, internet) etc.

I use a basic keyboard because gaming keyboards take up too much room and they're actually less efficient for games like Starcraft II. Almost every pro I know uses a very basic keyboard, and it does make a difference.

The mouse however, isn't quite generic. It's a Razer DeathAdder. Best mouse I've ever used.

DVI isn't bad, it can handle HD resolutions with no sweat. VGA is when you know you're still using some pretty old stuff.

Okay, so good news on the recall front:

The defect in the processor/mobo only affects the 3 GB/s SATA ports, and ONLY if you use them extensively. Obviously hard drives would trigger this problem since you use them constantly, however, I have my HDD and SSD hooked up to 6 GB/s SATA III ports, so this is a non-issue for them. I do have my DVD drives connected to the 3 GB/s, but I only use them lightly.. maybe a couple times a month at most, so the degradation should not affect them until 3-5 years down the road, and that's a worst case scenario. In all reality, I will probably never have a single problem with this issue. :tu

I think it's completely unnecessary at this point. A good heat sink should cool enough without being sanded.

I sold my old system to a friend of mine, gave him a great price on it. He was running Starcraft 2 on his laptop with an integrated graphics card. Lowest settings possible. :lol When he saw what "high" detail looked like, he flipped out.

The motherboard comes with instructions on where to put the power cables. From there it's just knowing how to follow directions and knowing which parts to buy... and what your budget is.
