'Eh, if you're within 1000 miles you'd die from pneumonia as your lungs filled with blood from being sliced up by the shards of volcanic glass in the ash you'd be breathing, so you wouldn't have to worry about starvation.

A similar volcano (Toba) is thought to have brought the human population down to 5,000 or so when it erupted 70,000 years ago.

Nah, the eruption in Colorado is nearly twice the large of that one. I'm not sure why the Wiki says its larger but the CO eruption shot out 5,000 KM3 of material which is far more than Toba.

Tsunamis are totally different than standard waves, and have much stronger rip currents. That's why they evacuate the Hawaiian coast even though 7 foot waves are nothing for them.

In downtown Tokyo, Tomoko Suzuki and her elderly mother stood at a crowded corner, unable to get to their 29th-floor condominium because the elevator wasn't working. They unsuccessfully tried to hail a taxi to a relative's house and couldn't find a hotel room.

I read somewhere that the duration of the main faulting was over 3 minutes. And the 2004 quake had a faulting length of up to 8 minutes(!). Can't imagine sitting through that for 180 seconds. :wow

Living in SoCal, the inevitable "Are You Ready for the Big One' fear-ridden segments will commence in not too long. I don't know though, I think it will be utter chaos when a 8.0+ hits the L.A. area. I mean, you see how the fine citizens of the city act when they win a sports championship. Just imagine when there isn't the basic necessities to be had after such a disaster. People will act the fool...and I should seriously consider the no guns mantra I've lived by for most of my life.

This is just honestly horrifying to see the pictures that have surfaced after the quake.

I do. I just don't know if its warranted because its like the family that decides to sail in known Somali pirate waters. Though, it is your personal right to do that--it's just really dancing with your fate if you decide to do such a thing. Three others have been accounted for, so that's a good part of the story.

Possible first casualty here in on the West Coast in the Crescent City Harbor area of NorCal...apparently, someone wanting to take photographs of the pending residual effects of the tsunami could have been swept out to sea. Don't know if I should feel fully sorry for the guy if he ignored the warnings and decided a picture is worth more than his life, but it is still tragic nonetheless.

Yeah this was reported a while ago. Apparently there were people surfing out there too. 4 people dragged out to sea and 1 confirmed dead.

Nuclear experts say that as of 17:00 GMT if the situation is not resolved in the next few hours it will become serious.[5] David Lochbaum, who worked at three American reactor complexes that use General Electric technology and now works for the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the plant was probably equipped to function for some hours without emergency diesel generators.[6] The United States Air Force delivered diesel generators to the plant site to assist in powering the cooling pumps. [7] The water level inside the reactor has dropped; however, the rods were not exposed.[8].

Past midnight local time, it was reported that The Tokyo Electric Power Company was considering venting super hot gas from the reactor vessel into the atmosphere, which could result in the release of radiation.[9] Saturday, the Tokyo Electric Company reported that radiation levels were rising in the turbine building for reactor 1.[10] On 20:30h UTC the pressure inside Reactor 1 was reported to be 2.1 times the "design capacity."[11] At 21:10 UTC, IAEA reported that unit 2 is also experiencing cooling issues.[12]

6:29am Saturday (JST), local time, anti-nuclear expert Kevin Kamp explains the nightmare scenario in Fukushma, via Forbes and the Institute for Public Accuracy: “The electrical grid is down. The emergency diesel generators have been damaged. The multi-reactor Fukushima atomic power plant is now relying on battery power, which will only last around eight hours. The danger is, the very thermally hot reactor cores at the plant must be continuously cooled for 24 to 48 hours. Without any electricity, the pumps won’t be able to pump water through the hot reactor cores to cool them. Once electricity is lost, the irradiated nuclear fuel could begin to melt down. If the containment systems fail, a catastrophic radioactivity release to the environment could occur.

Dude!? WTF is going on?

The quake heavily damaged the generators that run the cooling in the plant, so they had to switch to battery backups, which are only built to last 8 hours. After that, you can't keep pumping + cooling the water into the reactor any longer, and it starts boiling the water away until the rods are exposed to air. When that happens, they start melting down. And that's bad. Like, really bad.

MannyIsGod

The reason for the Chernobyl explosion was that the water stopped pumping to the plant, and then the heat from the core caused the water to flash to steam, which released so much energy from the flash that it generated more power, causing the core to get even hotter, flashing more of the water to steam and forming a feedback loop.

It's possible (but unlikely) that something similar could happen here. It depends if they can keep the plant cool enough to avoid this kind of explosive decay cycle.

1.6 microseconds may not seem like much, but for the mass of the earth... that's one hell of a lot of energy!

Now I'll bet that's a temporary change, because of the displaced sea water. It it is a permanent change, I'm not sure i understand the physics that would allow that without the earth shrinking a tiny bit.

I'm assuming that's 1.6 microseconds per day. It would take 1712 years for a second.

So let me get this straight! Japan is a small country that is known to get so many earthquakes they actually created a monster called Godzilla to help explain to the children why the buildings were all smashed, and yet no one has the sense to move from there? I thought Asians were smarter than us.
They did a pretty good job with the structural engineering. It's the tsunami that hurt them.

It's not a temporary change by the way of the quake. The reason the day shortens is due to the shifting faults actually moving a significant portion of the Earth's crust downward. This gives the Earth more central mass, and ever so slightly increases rotational speed, like pulling your limbs inward while spinning in a chair.

However, this adjustment will soon be lost because the gravity of the moon pulling on the rotation of the Earth actually causes the days to lengthen by a dozen or so microseconds per year.

Fox showed it a while back, and then just went back to pre-recorded programming. I'm puzzled at how cavalier the networks are being. They'll talk to someone saying "if they've lost containment" over video of the concrete containment building blowing up. Verizon cable has NGK but it's just talking heads so unless you speak Japanese, there's nothing there.

Not really a leap of logic that they reported an emergency yesterday, reported increased temperature and pressure, reported Cesium 137 outside the reactor, reported that they were going to open pressure valves to release pressure (while doubling the evacuation radius) and then watching the roof and walls blow off the containment building. That news agencies are reporting that there "might" be a reactor breach seems terribly optimistic.

BTW, they reported a similar emergency in building 2, so it seems like it's just a matter of time before that building blows as well. The Chernobyl exclusion zone is 30 km, so I guess we'll know for sure that it's fully exposed when they increase it to that size.

Japan's nuclear power operator has chequered past

http://in.reuters.com/article/2011/03/12/idINIndia-55523220110312

(Reuters) - The company at the centre of a nuclear reactor crisis following the biggest earthquake in Japan's recorded history has had a rocky past in an industry plagued by scandal.

The Japanese government said on Saturday that there had been radiation leakage at Tokyo Electric Power's (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi plant following an explosion there.

The blast came as TEPCO was working desperately to reduce pressures in the core of a reactor at the 40-year-old plant, which lies 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo.

In 2002, the president of the country's largest power utility was forced to resign along with four other senior executives, taking responsibility for suspected falsification of nuclear plant safety records.

The company was suspected of 29 cases involving falsified repair records at nuclear reactors. It had to stop operations at five reactors, including the two damaged in the latest tremor, for safety inspections.

A few years later it ran into trouble again over accusations of falsifying data.

In late 2006, the government ordered TEPCO to check past data after it reported that it had found falsification of coolant water temperatures at its Fukushima Daiichi plant in 1985 and 1988, and that the tweaked data was used in mandatory inspections at the plant, which were completed in October 2005.

And in 2007, TEPCO reported that it had found more past data falsifications, though this time it did not have to close any of its plants
