Anybody know why they were deployed? I can think of exactly 0 times I've seen them in SA airspace.
Just flew straight over my damn house. 3 of them. The first one used his burners...
My neighbor was ex-military and was saying it's illegal for them to do what they did, but it's the government so it doesn't really matter.. Said they could be refueling at the airport but that there's definitely something going on.
They were all F-15s.

They confused San Antonio with Libya?
They confused San Antonio with Libya?
Probably no coincidence that we started a war today.

reading reports (twitter) of Wisconsin, Nevada and Texas spotting f-15's in the sky.
AirWars7
Unconfirmed: US based F-15's on it's way to Sicily. Refuelled by KC-135's with callsign Ethyl10-16??
Prairie_Patriot
@RachaelJ83 creepy....all day they've been buzzing around in circles 2 or 3 at a time!
dblloyd74656
@RachaelJ83 @Prairie_Patriot Southern Nevada too. F-15's.

Not illegal to use afterburners. They're probably just here to fuel up; could be spares for broke dick jets pulling Noble Eagle detail for the prez. ... That is, if they were C models.
This is pretty interesting.
AJE: Reporter in Sigonella: refueling observed of Danish, Spanish and Canadian planes. Speculates this is Phase 2 in preparation. #Libya
Maybe they're just relocating assets for the war. Interesting stuff. Still don't know why they'd have to fly so low and use afterburners.

What? Lol
And aren't there regulations as far as how low you can fly over cities?

Do you live close to the airport?
And Sigonella is probably just one of the bases where the individual units could set up shop. I highly doubt the US would get involved in the air war, and if they did, they wouldn't send shit all the way from bloody England when Aviano is right friggin there.

Hah, sorry. Whenever the president goes anywhere away from an air base, he usually has a few jets tag along to play babysitter. Since there's nothing but old ass jets in our inventory, they tend to break. A lot.
And just how low were they?

lol i know that they wont get in trouble.. just in 15+ years i've never seen that happen so I'm curious as to why

Commercial jets fly over every day where I'm at but not even close to as low as these were (obviously) and I've just never seen it so I wanted to know what's going on.
What were you saying about broke dick jets and what-not? No idea what any of that lingo meant :lol

I'm not an expert, but I'd say 700-1000ft. 1000 is the maximum.
The president is in Brazil.. so I don't know if that's the case or not.

Ah, that's just a normal take off and they always use afterburners. Very few times they won't but 99% of the time they're in full burn.
Yeah, I heard that. I was supposed to be on a temporary deployment to follow Bush around whenever he went to S America a couple years back....but the fucker canceled it and I missed out.

Put it this way: last time I saw jets fly that low was on graduation day at the Naval Academy when the Blue Angels did a show.
I could clearly see the missile array on the first, the eagle with a black background on the vertical stabilizer on the second, and the third jet (w/ afterburners) set off every car alarm in the neighborhood.

Unless they were drunk, there's no way they'd land in afterburner. There's better ways to fuck up your career and the jet, lol.

I understand your point .... but there were many people posting similar things ... and in different languages. Twitter's not always the best source, but I figured I'd post it here anyways. Take it for what it's worth!

Hmmmmmm, if that's where they were goin, it could be to be as a deterrent in case Ghidaffi makes a suicide dash with some jets to attack Europe. I guess.

Maybe they're simply joining U.K. fighters on their attack missions? Part of the whole 'U.S. not taking the lead' mantra that Obama seems keen on displaying?

Lakenheath only has C models, which is purely air to air. If the US was going to join in on the attack missions, they'd use the 16's and A-10s at Spangdahlem and Aviano, with the A-10 being a beast at putting ground targets in a hurt locker.

F-15s are just loud-ass planes whenever I have been around them. Much moreso than F-16s, F-18s, or F-22s in my experience. I can't see any reason they'd use their afterburners over San Antonio; why waste fuel like that?

How have you guys lived in San Antonio and never seen fighters? I so many 16s out of Lackland its not even funny. I've never seen a 15 there but I have seen them at Randolph.
The only regulation for flying is that they're not supposed to break the sound barrier over population centers unless its an emergency but I'm not even sure thats true. Also, no offense, but I would not trust anyone who's not trained to give a reliable altitude those planes were flying at.
I dunno, but for me seeing military planes over San Antonio is pretty much normal. BTW having spent years driving down 90 past Lackland I lost count the number of times I had anything from as small as a 16 to as big as a C5 land right on top of me. Pretty cool sight each time.
Here in New Mexico I see them all the time in Albuquerque too. Saw my first Osprey here - that was pretty bad ass.

Never seen fighters on the Northside, no. Maybe at cruising altitude (such that it didn't register as noteworthy) , but not low enough to shake the house.

They can break the sound barrier if it's an emergency. If memory serves, a couple of 15's broke the sound barrier over Oregon when some civvie in a Cessna broke the airspace over Seattle where Obama was at.

Yeah, you pretty see everything flying over SA. For fighters, I know I have seen F-4, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-111, F-117, and F-22, discounting the time around airshows. The only ones I haven't seen are old Korea and early Vietnam fighters like the F-86, F-101, F-104, F-8, and F-105.
I've seen fighters many times over SA. This was different. They were incredibly low and 3 came in in rapid succession. As far as the altitude thing, you're right. I don't know how off I am in my prediction but I can say I live pretty close to the airport where commercial liners are in nearing the end of their descent and these planes were half as low as a commercial plane is.

U-2 or E-3 Sentry (AWACS) taking off is about 50 times louder than any of those...scared the living shit out of me on my first deployment hearing em take off.

I see fighters pass overhead everyday in SA while I'm at work. Nothing unusual about seeing 2 or 3 of them together.

Yea, seeing the fighters/trainers in the sky has always been the usual sign that I am approaching the Randolph I-35 area; but even away from there I've seen them low and occ. they use the after-burners. Seeing those monstrous transport planes has always been a landmark for approaching Lackland too, but I haven't been in the Lackland area in ages. Either one of those scenarios would only be odd if they didn't happen....

I think by the time he gets that desperate to maintain power, his air force will be well contained. Still a scary thought.
We're seeing them here in Austin, too, and I hardly ever see any flight traffic here on the north side. Another one just flew over as I wrote this.
