joseph?
Maybe, but I doubt it. He's going into his third season, and those players rarely play in the summer league -- especially if they're in the rotation already. Likely it will be Denmon or some Toros guard.

I am almost 100% that Joseph will be there in the summer. Kid is only still 21 and needs as much PT as possible. I would not even count Joseph as a full rotation player since he played so little during the regular season and did not get any NBA PT until playoff time.

It would be nice to have someone who has experience run the point just as long as he works on creating and not making baskets.
Partizan crushed Red Star in the Serbian Finals opener 82-54. I think Partizan was the "home" team, so they would have had their fans in the arena, but I'm not positive. Bertans had 10 points on 4 for 6 shooting (2 for 4 on 3 pointers), 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and a block in 17 minutes. Looks like he was in foul trouble, but it didn't matter.

Wow. He's got better hops than I realized. He was way up. His wingspan is just average, but his jumping should help make up for it.

It looks like Partizan really spreads the minutes out a lot and has pretty even scoring amongst amongst players. He averaged 9.8 points in 23 minutes in the Adriatic league, which was second best on the team and 13.4 points in 25 minutes in the Serbian League, which was best on the team. He didn't do as well in Euroleague.
http://basketball.eurobasket.com/team/BC_Partizan_MTS_Beograd/170?Page=3
Also, Bertans is only 20 and "dynamic scorer" might be a stretch. He's a great shooter though.

23 minutes per game and 25 minutes, isn't that quite low for a superstar there? Even though considering they have 40 minute games right?

:lol Now you're just trolling. I don't think anyone has ever called Bertans a superstar. He's just a good prospect, especially considering his age. If he makes the NBA, I think his ceiling would be possibly an NBA starter at some point. On the other hand, he may never even make it. He was the 42nd pick, after all. I like him though. I think he'll be Leonard's backup sometime soon. And his 25 minutes in the Serbian League was second most on the team...

:lol I seriously thought you were trolling me. Bertans plays for the best team in the Serbian League and the larger Adriatic League. They play in the Euroleague as well (Europe's top competition), but are not a good team on that level. Still, he's on a much better team than a player like Hanga, and Partizan is way, way above Ryan Richards' team in the Austrian League. Because of his age and the level of the competition he's facing, what he is doing is pretty impressive. Bertans is currently the most likely of the Spurs' international players to some day make the team, but that's not necessarily saying that much. If anybody has hyped him, it was probably me, so sorry about that.

Partizan needs one more win, Davis didn't have a great game today (he's not playing well this final part of the season), but he made a BIG CLUTCH 3 pointer. Red star was in the lead for almost whole game, but at the end, Bertans' shoot gave us the lead.

The one thing I like about this kid is the passion for the game and he is not scarred of taking the open shot when the game is on the line. The summer league is going to be the best summer league that I can remember and it is going to be interesting how he and our other foreign draft picks play.

Bertans isn't a dominant player in Europe. He is nowhere near the level a player like Splitter had before joining Spurs. What is making him attractive is that he is only 20 years old and is playing well at a solid level of competition. If he was 22 or 23 years old and had that production, he would be a significantly less interesting player to follow.
It's nice to see there are some Partizan fans here, welcome to them. From the recent games I've seen from Bertans, it seemed obvious that his future was at the SF spot and not being a stretch PF. Do you agree with that?

He has a buyout, some wil be covered by the Spurs but the most from Bertans himself.Partizan never stops his players if they want to leave.Plus Bertans is determined to play for the Spurs,he's always pointing that out.But he isn't ready for the nba yet, personally i think he's 2 seasons away from that.

Here is the article from Serbian site.
Let me do a quick summary of it:
It is yet unknown how severe his injury is. The results of medical exams will be known on Thursday or Friday. If he hurt his ligaments he will probably miss Eurobasket in Slovenia, where Latvia plays in same group as Serbia.
In 2nd half, Bertans watched the game and celebrated his teammates' actions and the win basically on "one leg". After the game, when team gathered in the locker room, it became obvious that something was wrong with him, as he was sitting in there, staring at his phone and crying, while his teammates were celebrating the title. Then his teammates told him to go with them in order to take some pictures, however, when Bertans wanted to get up, the pain in his knee prevented him that.
Sorry for a shitty translation but I think you all get the point of the article. I hope to hear more (good) news today...

Holy shit!
This means one year out...and, for us, one year lost.
I thought of him like a very good chance to be on summer league and in our roster next year like a back up SF.
He's very young and should recover well, but I don't think that, at this point, he's gonna have a chance to be with us next year.

:/ Honestly, I think the Spurs still should sign him. A year with the medical staff and learning from the sidelines should still do him some good.
Chinook
06-13-2013, 10:23 AM
Well, having him for next season is out. Let's talk long-term future.
If the Spurs want to be cheap, they may as well let Bertans rehab on Partizan's dime and not theirs. However, the Spurs have to hope that Bertans can get the same medical treatment as he could get here. More than that, the Spurs have to trust that he wouldn't be rushed back too soon and do even worse damage to his knee. If the Spurs have doubts and believe in his long-term potential, it may be worth it to bring him over on a three-year deal and let him rehab with the Toros and learn the system in a big red-shirt year. That could be a waste of a roster spot though.
Bertans is still 6-9/6-10, so even if he loses a good deal of athleticism, he should be able to get his shot off, which is really the most important part of his potential NBA game. His defensive potential may drop a lot now, which does hurt his chances of staying on the floor, but I think he'll be fine provided he recovers correctly. The real question (that anyone can control) becomes if Bertans should try to bulk up and play the four now that he's probably lost some quickness. He has the height for it, but he doesn't really have the frame. Worse case, he could still be a Novak-like player with a lot of work.
Bruno
06-13-2013, 10:39 AM
For the moment, I haven't seen a reliable source telling exactly which cruciate ligament he tore. It could be ACL and/or MCL and/or PCL. It's not known whether or not he will need surgery.
I guess that, if Partizan is fine with it, Spurs would like to do the surgery and/or rehab themselves. That's what Spurs did with Sanikidze and Denmon.

Let it go..There was always a small chance of him coming over even healthy. Gonna be a minimum of 2 years for him to come over in my opinion and if he progresses from this injury a more realistic window is 3-4 years. This sucks cause I really wanted to see him this summer but the fact that he is still young helps him out alot.

The FO has a good history of taking care of our stashed players when they are injured. I'm sure it will be no different with Bertans. As Bruno said, we'll no doubt work with his team and decide on the best possible path for his recovery and long term good. That is a great thing about the Spurs.

So a torn right ACL it is...
Partizan mt:s Belgrade paid a high price for its victory over Crvena Zvezda Telekom in Game 4 of the Serbian League finals. Promising forward Davis Bertans suffered a knee injury, and after further evaluation, the club announced Friday that Bertans tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days.
"It is a difficult situation", said Partizan head coach Dusko Vujosevic. "Davis took it pretty hard, but I am sure he will come out of this even stronger. Our club is behind him."
The estimated recovery time from such an injury is at least six months, which means that Bertans could miss the entire 2013-14 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season. Bertans (2.05 meters, 20 years old) just completed his second season with Partizan. He averaged 6.6 points on 47.1% three-point shooting in 10 Euroleague games last season, including a season-high 17 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting against FC Barcelona Regal. His numbers jumped to 9.8 points on 44.6% three-point shooting in 28 Adriatic League games.

I meant that it's possible to draw some parallels. Promising European play followed by a possibly career-altering injury. For Javtokas, it was because he got hurt so badly it materially affected his game. For Bertans, he could make a full recovery, but is going to lose precious career development time.

ACL tears are almost routine, these days. He'll be fine. It's much better that he tore a ligament that his meniscus. The recovery time is longer, but the recovery is complete. Once you start shaving or removing meniscus, the clock starts on knee degradation and arthritis.
They didn't know if Javtokas would ever play again. One if his leg bones was literally shattered. It really isn't even comparable.

Uh, no. The EARLIEST he could come back would be 6 months, around Christmas. More likely is nine months. That would be only a few weeks before the playoffs. The Spurs will pay for and manage his surgery, but they will not pay for him to take up a roster spot and salary space just to rehab for almost the whole season.

ACL reconstruction is actually not that much of a problem nowadays, unless something goes really really wrong and someone does stupid things. The functional rehab protocols are well known.
The main trouble is to make sure both knees are correctly rehabed, as the non operated knee is the one that is the more prone to be injuried (ALC tear or rupture), due to muscle loss generated by the body to balance the injured knee.

Don't be a fool and rush back...take your time..:)
Uh, no. The EARLIEST he could come back would be 6 months, around Christmas. More likely is nine months. That would be only a few weeks before the playoffs. The Spurs will pay for and manage his surgery, but they will not pay for him to take up a roster spot and salary space just to rehab for almost the whole season.
a retun by Christmas wouldn't be terrible. It's not like he was going to a contributor this year anyway. He was going to need a year to learn the system, get reps in Austin, etc. 5 months of that isn't a bad investment on a cheap deal.
I think the spurs not signing him has less to do with his injury, than them wanting to see what fall out comes from the Neal/Blair departures, as well as what player is available to scoop up with the last slot. If they strike out on Oden or someone like Ayon, and they're not convinced about Thomas, then why not Bertans?

With Spurs doing the surgery and the rehab, they will be the one in charge to decide Bertans return timetable which is a good thing. Partizan will be tempted to have Bertans coming back as quickly as possible to help them to win games next season while Spurs only interest is Bertans' long term health. I'm torn between wanting the team to sign him when he gets healthy this season and them waiting until the off-season as to not was an accrued season on a couple of months. The team has enough of the MLE to sign him for up to four seasons. But a three-year deal is probably best for both sides, and I'm not really keen on only getting two real seasons out of him.
I'm for it if there's a roster spot available for him after the March 1st waiver deadline. It would be nice to save all of next year's MLE for other players.

If they wanted, they could sign him after waiving Brown (which I'm 100% sure will happen). I don't see bringing him over now, though. You only have so many years of control and evaluation before a player is a FA, and partial years count as years.

From Bertrans side,i think one more year in Europe is best for him.He is not NBA ready,to many flaws.
From Partizan's side, they need more his buyout money than they need him.The club has a lot of financial problems like so many others in Europe.Plus they are looking for his replacement from the beginning of the season.
If i was Spurs and i wanted to sign him in the summer,i wouldn't let him come back in Partizan to play only 2 months and possible risk another injury. At one point i was certain he was finished with Partizan.Right now i'm not so sure.Another season in Partizan seems more realistic.

Who`s better to do next year backup backup SF/Toros - Jean Charles or Bertrans ?
Depends on how they come back from injury. I like Jean-Charles for his defense and rebounding. He can play the four as well.

Hanga as the backup SF/SG and Livio as a backup for PF/SF...:) I like Bertrans but I think his body is not developed enough to play in the NBA without breaking down give him another year.

Bertans already with 20 points against Lokomotiv Kuban. 4/4 for 2 and 4/6 from 3. 5 mins left.
Impressive numbers, especially if you consider that he just played 20 minutes in this game.
Too bad his team is already knocked out of the next round. They still have two more Euroleagues to play though, on April 4th and 11th.
Partizan has Adriatic League play after Euroleague, right?

Iirc he cut it off as a child while he was chopping wood or something like that.
Just tuned into Partizan - Zalgiris.
Bertans off to a good start with 6 points on two 3s. Also a good opportunity to get a look at Bogdan Bogdanovic.
Very good first half for Bertans, 10 points on 8 shots and 5 rebounds. Outside of those 3s he had a reverse layup on a heady backdoor cut and then had a great sequence where he rebounded the ball, ran the length of the court and finished with a strong two handed dunk.
Not a good stint here in the 3rd. Two forced 3s and a blocked shot on a drive. Partizan not doing a good job setting him up with screens though, pretty much just giving him the ball on the wing and asking him to create something.
He also switched from playing SF to PF. At least his effort on the boards has continued, up to 7 rebounds already.
Bogdanovic has been awfully passive so far not creating much of anything.

Bertans 17 pts + 10 rebounds for 30 minutes.Looking much better than anyone expected.
I'm really surprised by his offensive versatility. When I first saw him I thought he would just be another one dimensional spot up shooter but his ball handling and ability to work off screens are coming along nicely.
Still don't know if he can defend anyone at the NBA level but his length is definitely an asset.

The opponent features some recognizable faces with Pops Mensah Bonsu, Malik Hairston and Carlos Arroyo.
Solid game for him: 11 pts/3 3pters/2 rebs/3 asts (including a nifty behind the back pass in transition).

He has only played 5 games this season and averages 3.4 fouls/game in just 21.4 minutes. That means that per 36 minutes he is commiting 5.7 fouls/game which is Ian Mahinmi (6 fouls/per 36) territory.
These are his stats for past seasons: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Davis-Bertans-6320/stats/
You can see that he has always been a quite foul prone but never quite as bad as he is now. So you would think that those foul numbers will go down a bit.
I wonder if one cause for his high foul rate is being played both as SF and PF. Making that ingame transition from guarding the perimeter to defending paint is very difficult, especially for a skinny guy like him.
Definitely makes you appreciate a guy like Kawhi who can defend really well without fouling too much even more.

:tu If he plays for the Spurs, he shouldn't have to defend the paint. I think he will only play PF when the opposing team goes small/plays a stretch 4, so he would still be defending the perimeter.

I really don't like Partizan playing zone defense for long stretches that's not going to help Bertans develop on that end.

Partizen playing like the spurs: bad defense, alot of turnovers, cannot hit free throws. Nurkic is one mean dude and just about broke Bertans nose with an elbow. Throwing around Bertans whenever they are matched up. Nurkic trying to keep up with Bertans on offense is a whole different matter, Nurkic to bench with 3 fouls in 1st half..

Nurkic is one of the most physical centers you'll see in Europe. His body is simply huge. He is definitely a prospect, but as I said, has trouble with getting in foul trouble regularly. I've seen him foul out in 15 minutes or even less.

Uh, the Euroleague is a MUCH higher level of bball than the dleague. He's right where he needs to be to develop without using a roster spot. When he's ready, they'll bring him over and he'll play. There's zero point in paying him an NBA salary to shuttle back and forth between SA and Austin if he isn't ready.

I agree and I think he is ready to take over Bonners position so welcome to the coaching staff Red. It takes around one to two years before a player get's comfortable or playing time so let him come in and learn from the best. Will he come in and be a starter nope but he can get five to ten minutes a game and work on his body as far as getting stronger.

I would be a little surprised and disappointed if they Spurs didn't bring him over for the start of next season. As it stands right now if Duncan and Ginobili retire after next season there will be a lot of new faces for the 2015-2016 season. Even if Bertans does not play much next season I think he gains a lot to learn just being around the players.

Bertans need to stay in europe and get legit playing time for another year. He has already missed 3/4 of last season due to injury and no reason to come over and sit on the bench. He is a big part of his current team and should play 25+ mpg .We need to face the fact the spurs are going to suck after the 2015 season at least for that 1st season post TD and Manu and no reason to ruin young players development in the mean time.

Bertans is going to need time to adjust to living on another continent and playing against much tougher competition. It would be better for him to do that next year when he'd be in Austin than in 2015 where he'd be expected to be in the rotation. The d-league isn't near the competition of elite European leagues, but it's a better medium for learning the NBA game and Spurs' system.

Interesting, so you think by playing in Austin he will play against tougher competition? Also would not worry about the spurs system cause when TD,manu, and coach pop leave in about 2 seasons the system will probably change once again. Bertans seems to come over every summer to do his work in San Antonio, so the culture shock will not be as bad as some might think. The kid needs to stay over in europe and work on his game against very good (austin = average profesional league) players and do this on another teams dime.

No one needs to care about whose dime it's on. Bertans is going to make pennies by NBA standards for a few years. It's an expense the team can easily afford.
I didn't say the d-league was better competition (said the opposite). I said it would help him get more used to the NBA game and the Spurs' system, since the Toros run that.
The thing is, Bertans isn't likely to play right away whether he comes over this summer or next. He's simply got too much to learn. Yet there is also has a decent chance he can sneak in as Kawhi's backup either year. If the Spurs sign him this year, he has a good chance to gaining the team's confidence in 2015. If he waits a year, the team may well not consider him a sure bet for the rotation and sign a vet wing like they did this year with Beli.
Also note that Bertans is only competing with Daye if he comes over this year, whereas he will be up against Jean-Charles (in whom the team has invested more) if he waits.
If this kid even just becomes the next Matt bonner, that George Hill trade will have to go down as one of the best con jobs ever pulled off on an NBA draft night.

Matt Bonner and Austin Daye are two Spurs who very well might not be back, and Bertans could easily make use of one of those spots, not like much will be expected from an Austin Daye replacement. He can spend all the time in the world under close watch over at Austin if need be

Daye played garbage time. If he ever played against a real 4, he'd get abused in the post, as would Bertans.
Looking at the videos it looks like Bertans has underrated speed; not fast, but certainly faster than I remember from the early draft scouting reports. He'd be slotted at the backup 3 next year would be my guess. The other thought is that over time he may be able to play the shooting guard, similar to the big, relatively slower SGs in the mold of Steven Smith, Hedo Turk, or Stojaković. Leonard and a defensive minded pg can help cover on the defensive end. Again this is a few years into the future but just thought. LJC can be Leonard's back up at that time.
Daye probably has more stretch for potential, but he needs to go on the Boris Diaw 1.0 diet this summer. It's not like he's that fast anyway where putting on more weight would be detrimental. Fewer players are as intelligent as Boris, but with Dayes handles and his range I see some point forward ability there like Boris. Again, it all depends on whether he can bulk up. He should talk to Robert Horry about how made that transition from when he was with the Rockets to when he moved to the Lakers.

Yeah Bertrans will do his damage from the outside but he does have the handles to take it in for a dunk and plays pretty good defense.
LVJ is more of a mid range guy who will be doing a lot of damage in the paint.

It looks like the same two teams from the brawl. Maybe this was the conclusion of that game at a later date? There are virtually no fans in the arena. Various players had been ejected, and they had to finish with who was left, I guess.
Two notes:
The team with five should be owning, and they're not. Those are the softest traps in history.
I'll bet the arena is not air conditioned.

There is a very known rivarly between Partizan and Red Star, they are from the same city and are huge rivals, so are the fans. There was a group brawl in this game, many players got ejected so there were only 5 players left on the court and yeah, the arema got emptied as well, and it was far from first time. After the game, Partizan wanted to boycott the rest of the games (this was the first game of the finals), but later decided they will play. Blew them out in game 2.
