April 25-28, 2011, Tornado Outbreak Statistics

NOAA's preliminary estimate is that there were 362 tornadoes during the entire outbreak from 8:00 a.m. EDT April 25 to 8:00 a.m. April 28, 2011.

During the 24-hour period from 8:00 a.m. EDT April 27 to 8:00 a.m. EDT April 28, The National Weather Service (NWS) estimates there were a total of 312 tornadoes.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center issued severe weather outlooks five days in advance and tornado watches hours in advance.
NWS Weather Forecast Offices issued life-saving tornado warnings, with an average lead-time of 24 minutes. NWS issued warnings for more than 90 percent of these tornadoes.
NWS decision support for this event has been extensive. NWS Weather Forecast Offices in the affected areas of Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia advertised the potential for severe weather in the Tuesday through Wednesday timeframe since late last week. Local offices provided direct decision support services to meet the specific needs of local emergency manager partners and the general public. NWS Weather Forecast Offices issued Hazardous Weather Outlooks up to six days in advance noting the greater threat of strong, long-track tornadoes was expected.
The largest previous number of tornadoes on record in one event occurred from April 3-4, 1974, with 148 tornadoes.

Expert analysis by NOAA Research and the National Weather Service of the fatality information indicates that at least 350 people were killed during the entire outbreak from 8:00 a.m. EDT April 25 to 8:00 a.m. April 28. There were 340 fatalities during the 24-hour-period from 8:00 a.m. April 27 to 8:00 a.m. April 28.

The April 26-28 period had the most people killed by tornadoes in a two-day period since April 5-6, 1936, when 454 people were killed, mostly in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Gainesville, Georgia.
April 27, 2011, is the deadliest single day for tornadoes since the March 18, 1925, tornado outbreak that had 747 fatalities across 7 states (including the Tri-State Tornado).
The Tuscaloosa-Birmingham tornado during the April 2011 event caused at least 65 fatalities. This tornado had a maximum width of 1.5 miles and a track 80 miles long.
These are the most fatalities from a single tornado in the United States since May 25, 1955, when 80 people were killed in a tornado in southern Kansas with 75 of those deaths in Udall, Kansas.
The deadliest single tornado on record in the United States was the Tri-State tornado (Mo., Ill., Ind.) on March 18, 1925, when 695 died.
Ongoing (preliminary) List of Tornadoes by EF Rating (EF3 to EF5):

EF5: 2
EF4: 11
EF3: 21
Note: All numbers are based on combined NOAA and historical research records and current fatality estimates. The historical research records extend back to 1680.

The updated numbers are pretty spectacular. 312 in one fucking day? It will always be hard to compare it to 1974 because we simply gather so much more data today but 312 is much higher than I expected to see.

I definitely now believe this will be considered the biggest outbreak that we've recorded.

Gotta be the Tri-State, although I'm sure it's unconfirmed since we didn't have a damage scale back then, or even reliable evaluation methods.

Confirmed... maybe the Oklahoma City tornado? There aren't that many F5s in recorded history, so it shouldn't be too difficult to narrow it down, especially if you're talking about post-Fujita scale and thus confirmed damage reports and building codes.

i drove from Dallas to Lubbock today and i saw two of them that each produced golfball/baseball sized hail. (I was pretty far north, but I heard the warnings on the radio). The thuderclouds were massive and they had some serious overshooting tops.

That's at least a maximum F4. The storm chasers said that the bark had been stripped from trees... that's a minimum of EF3 damage. But that photo speaks volumes... one of the foundations looks almost completely cleared off. I think it's got to be a borderline EF5. Sad, sad day for Joplin. Hope the weather is better today and the storms go around that city. :depressed

MannyIsGod
05-23-2011, 11:15 AM
They likely had more warning time than 5 minutes. Even so, 5 minutes is enough time to seek shelter. The problem is that so many people now just ignore the warnings as always. They highlighted that on the discovery channel show last night. No one pays attention to the sirens.

Also, the video phenomenon is getting really really bad. Most of the videos they showed last night were just idiots on cell phones standing in the path while a monster storm comes at them.

apparently this wasn't a long-track type a`la the 4/27 tornadoes. Most reports i've heard place it on the ground for around 4 miles. Seems it touched down right before it hit Joplin, which would explain the short warning time.

but... Usually the NWS will tornado warn storms when they see rotation or a defined hook, even without visual confirmation. Sometimes visual confirmation can be almost impossible if a tornado is rain wrapped.

Manny can probably explain this better than I can

You explained it fine. The NWS warns a cell the moment they feel its capable of producing a tornado. Not all cells go warned but I can promise you that no EF5 has ever dropped without being tornado warned.

The amount of deaths really are more of a byproduct of a very strong tornado in a high population density area. That will pretty much always lead to deaths.

I think I know where the 5 minute thing came from now.

People were under the impression they had 20 minutes before the storm was on them, when in fact it ended up bearing down in about 5 minutes.

Don't have a link, but I saw a few people say this during interviews which aired today.

Moral of the story? If the sirens go off, get your ass to the safest part of your dwelling immediately! Don't run outside with your cell phone, don't stand at the window trying to see it. Could be the difference between life and death

exactly. whenever there's a well defined hook echo on radar they issue the Tornado Warning anyway. I just don't see how a storm can just drop an F4 that quickly without well defined circulation

Costs about $10, but it's an awesome app. Fires as soon as the National Weather Service issues an alert (watch or warning). You can put in multiple areas if you want to keep an eye on things for friends and family, or just have it configured to work for your area.

Also embeds radar and google maps so you can zoom in and look at the storms, etc.

Really jealous of you. But be careful. This year has even had some experienced chasers scrambling to get out of the way of rapidly forming funnels.

Thanks. Me and one of my buddies are both storm spotters so will be out and about anyway. But we already looked at the forecast this evening and the model runs and discussed going as far as Ardmore tomorrow.

We've seen a funnel or two but otherwise missed out on all the excitement. We err on the side of safety, but as you noted with something so unpredictable nothing is guaranteed.

I'm honestly more worried about the high probability that there's going to be a hell of a lot of chasers out tomorrow.

There's been an explosion of chasers this year. I think there was over 40 groups (either with chasing websites or TV News chase teams) out on the road today in Oklahoma.

The Storm Chasers teams will also be in action tomorrow from what I've heard (both TIV 2 and Reed with two Dominators), and there's rumblings that the CSWR will have DOWs out tomorrow as well.

Could be an epic cluster on the road, and the last place I want to be with a tornado in the area is stuck in a traffic jam like that.

All that aside, I will say this. if you're reading this and you either live or have loved ones in the I-35 corridor, from north Dallas/Ft. Worth all the way up through south central Kansas, please be sure you (or them) are keeping an eye on the weather tomorrow.

Based on all the model runs tomorrow is setting up to be another April 27 (Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/etc.) type of day. And you've got major cities up and down the I-35 corridor. Stuff's going to be popping all up and down the dry line, all the way up to likely Wichita, KS or just north thereof.

We're talking northern DFW, Norman, Oklahoma City, Stillwater, Tulsa, some major cities (poor OKC is right in the bullseye it's looking like). People need to take the warnings seriously, way too many people have already died this year from tornados.

And we'll likely see a repeat on Wednesday, but to the east of the I-35 corridor. Anyway, it's going to be a crazy and dangerous two days and people need to pay attention to the National Weather Service. They've been pretty damn good with their 0day forecasts, meaning whatever they come out with in the morning tomorrow as far as watches and danger areas is going to define what's in play tomorrow.

And when the warnings come out, people need to heed those and take shelter. Don't try to be a youtube hero, either. /rant.

AHF, you can be sure all of OKC will be out chasing tomorrow. Mobile internet and the radar information it provides makes it very easy to chase. Happy hunting!

PS If it were me, I'd want to on the north side of OKC by three. The real action is going to be up the I35 corridor at about that time (maybe an hour or two later) and move east from there.

One last post before I call it a night... Anything over 4000 is really bad. Most of Oklahoma is sitting over 5000. This is no guarantee of tornadic activity, but one of the main ingredients...

http://ruc.noaa.gov/rucnew/from_jet/ruc7t/full/2011052400/cape_sfc_f22.png

I wouldn't trust the RUC that far out. Look at the GFS CAPE plots instead, IMO.

That will probably be better for you. The GFS plots there have better information.

Yeah, things are definitely trending northward. It looks like OKC north to Wichita, KS is going to be the sweet spot.

Will be honest, when I mentioned north Texas last night it was mainly because I didn't want to have to drive so far today :lol Can't get out of work before 2 or so, so we'll be confined to north Texas to Ardmore or so this evening.

And agreed on the RUC, I just wanted to throw something up that showed the potential for today.

There should be plenty of action between OKC and Dallas. I kinda doubt with this set up you'll be hurting for cells to chase in your area

The shitty part of that is that Dallas is huge and there are a lot of AHFs in Dallas. The closer you chase to a big metro area the more you're going to be stuck in traffic.

AHF, the latest run of the RUC has the 5pm MLCAPE at Ardmore near 4000. Make sure you either chase in a shitty car or you stay out of the center of those supercells. If nothing else 4000 J/KG will make for huge updrafts which make for huge hail. Attack them from the SE is best, but make sure you come from the south. Going from the north you won't see shit without going through them.

Yeah, my buddy and I like our cars. We prefer to hang to the south of storms and come in on the back end of them to stay out of the hail cores. Probably means we miss some action, or end up falling behind trying to chase storms that are hauling ass at like 50-60 miles an hour, but it beats a new windsheld / totalled car...

AN INTENSE OUTBREAK OF TORNADOES AND WIDESPREAD SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS IS EXPECTED LATER TODAY OVER PORTIONS OF KS/OK/TX

PRESENT INDICATIONS AND LATEST OPERATIONS/MESOSCALE MODEL GUIDANCE
INDICATE THAT DISCRETE SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORMS WILL FORM ALONG THE
KS/OK DRYLINE BY MID AFTERNOON AND MOVE RAPIDLY NORTHEASTWARD WITH A
RISK OF A FEW TORNADOES AND VERY LARGE HAIL. EARLY IN THE
EVENT...THE GREATEST TORNADO THREAT WILL BE OVER KS AS STORMS
INTERACT WITH PRE-EXISTING OUTFLOW BOUNDARY AND BACKED LOW LEVEL
WINDS.

AS THE AFTERNOON PROGRESSES...CONTINUED HEATING AND LARGE SCALE LIFT
DUE TO APPROACHING UPPER TROUGH MAY LEAD TO MULTIPLE ROUNDS OF
CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE DRYLINE. THESE STORMS WILL ALSO
TRACK ACROSS THE HIGH RISK AREA DURING THE EVENING. LOW LEVEL WINDS
WILL BE STRENGTHENING...WITH ALL CONDITIONS FAVORING THE POTENTIAL
FOR LONG-TRACKED STRONG/VIOLENT TORNADOES AND VERY LARGE HAIL OVER
PORTIONS OF NORTH TX...CENTRAL OK...AND CENTRAL KS.

and records keep getting broken

On Sunday, May 22, a devastating tornado hit the city of Joplin, Mo., leaving an estimated 116 people dead and several hundred others injured. This tied the June 8, 1953, tornado that hit Flint, Mich., as the deadliest single tornado to strike the U.S. since modern tornado recordkeeping began in 1950.

The deadliest tornado on record was on March 18, 1925. This “Tri-State Tornado” (MO, IL, IN) had a 291-mile path, was rated F5 based on a historic assessment, and caused 695 fatalities.

Preliminary rating: Powerful EF-4 tornado with winds from 190-198 mph. Tornado was ¾ of a mile wide. A final determination on strength will be available Tuesday, May 24, after our Springfield Weather Forecast Office completes the storm survey.
National Weather Service's (NWS) preliminary estimate is more than 100 tornadoes have occurred during the month of May 2011.

The record number of tornadoes during the month of May was 542 tornadoes set in May 2003.

Today upgraded to Particularly Dangerous Situation for North Texas / Oklahoma / south Kansas...

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/ww0356.html

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 356
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1250 PM CDT TUE MAY 24 2011

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

WESTERN AND CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
NORTHWEST AND NORTH-CENTRAL TEXAS

EFFECTIVE THIS TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 1250 PM UNTIL
1000 PM CDT.

...THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION...

DESTRUCTIVE TORNADOES...LARGE HAIL TO 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER...
THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE
POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 85 STATUTE
MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 45 MILES WEST NORTHWEST OF
PONCA CITY OKLAHOMA TO 25 MILES SOUTH SOUTHWEST OF FORT WORTH
TEXAS. FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED
WATCH OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU6).

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...CONTINUE...WW 352...WW 354...WW 355...

DISCUSSION...TSTM INITIATION IS ANTICIPATED WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR OR
TWO ALONG THE DRYLINE FROM WRN OK INTO W-CNTRL TX. STRONG HEIGHT
FALLS/DYNAMIC FORCING FOR ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH NEGATIVELY TILTED
MIDLEVEL TROUGH EMERGING INTO THE PLAINS SHOULD SUPPORT A RAPID
INCREASE IN STORM COVERAGE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. WARM SECTOR AIR
MASS IS CHARACTERIZED BY A VERY MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER WITH DEWPOINTS
IN THE UPPER 60S TO LOWER 70S. WHEN COUPLED WITH STEEP MIDLEVEL
LAPSE RATES...ENVIRONMENT IS MODERATELY TO STRONGLY UNSTABLE WITH
MLCAPE VALUES OF 2500-4000 J/KG. DEEP-LAYER SHEAR STRENGTHENING TO
40-50 KT WILL PROMOTE RAPID SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT WITH THE INITIAL
HAZARD BEING VERY LARGE HAIL. INITIAL VEER-BACK WIND PROFILE
OBSERVED IN CURRENT VADS/PROFILERS IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION TO
LARGE CLOCKWISE CURVED HODOGRAPHS BY 00Z WHERE 0-1 KM SRH WILL
APPROACH 400-500 M2/S2. AS SUCH...EXPECT A RAPID INCREASE IN THE
THREAT FOR TORNADOES THIS AFTERNOON INTO EVENING...SOME OF WHICH
COULD BE LONG-TRACKED AND STRONG TO VIOLENT.

AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 3 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE
WIND GUSTS TO 60 KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO
550. MEAN STORM MOTION VECTOR 23035.

Cap is gone. Things are going to start booming now.

A SEVERE THREAT WILL LIKELY DEVELOP ACROSS THE CONCHO VALLEY INTO
CNTRL TX THIS AFTERNOON. AS CELLS INITIATE...SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT
WILL LIKELY OCCUR WITH A POTENTIAL FOR LARGE HAIL AND TORNADOES. A
TORNADO WATCH WILL LIKELY BE NECESSARY OVER THE NEXT HOUR ACROSS THE
REGION.

A DRYLINE IS CURRENTLY LOCATED ACROSS WEST TX AND IS STARTING TO
ADVANCE MORE QUICKLY EWD. VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS CUMULUS
JUST AHEAD OF THE DRYLINE FROM NEAR WICHITA FALLS SWD TO NEAR SAN
ANGELO. THE CAPPING INVERSION IS NOW GONE ACROSS THE MCD AREA AND
STORM INITIATION WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY LIKELY AS CONVERGENCE
INCREASES ALONG THE DRYLINE. MESOANALYSIS SHOWS STRONG INSTABILITY
IN PLACE WITH MLCAPE VALUES FROM 3000 TO 4000 J/KG. IN
ADDITION...PROFILER DATA SUGGEST 0-6 KM SHEAR VALUES ARE AROUND 40
KT. THE SHEAR SHOULD RAPIDLY INCREASE AS A 65 TO 80 KT MID-LEVEL JET
MOVES INTO THE REGION FROM THE WEST MAKING CONDITIONS VERY FAVORABLE
FOR SUPERCELLS. THE MORE DOMINANT SUPERCELLS SHOULD HAVE A THREAT
FOR VERY LARGE HAIL OF GREATER THAN 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER. IN
ADDITION...STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL SHEAR LATE THIS AFTERNOON SHOULD
ALSO RESULT IN A TORNADO THREAT WITH AN ISOLATED STRONG TORNADO
THREAT POSSIBLE AS WELL.

super res shows some serious rotation, not sure I would call it small. KFOR is saying that it's large and violent and has already done significant damage

But no, it's not nearly as impressive as that northern cell, on radar anyway

Nah, you see all the grass around the foundation? In an EF5 that would be scoured. I am pretty certain thats not an EF5 we just saw. I'd wager very strong EF3 maybe EF4.
