Only so much energy in the atmosphere. There's a lot of outflow boundaries and stabilization going on in the OKC area.

Pretty much every post La Nina cycle has seen severe outbreaks (1974, 1999, and I think there was one in the 60s too).

any video?

I don't know what I have yet as far as video goes. One lesson learned from today was that we need more than two of us chasing.

My buddy/roomie drove, and I had navigator/photography/video/radar/make-sure-we-don't-end-up-in-the-tornado duties.

That was hella hectic. There was about an hour/hour and a half period in Ardmore where we had three different tornadoes come through. One of the chasers reported an eighteen wheeler got flipped right in front of him about a quarter mile ahead of us on the second tornadic cell. They ended up having to take the driver to hospital.

So glad I made my buddy stop at the top of the hill I did and not go to the next one.

Got treated to a wicked light show on the way back, and chased the first DFW tornado well east of the Metroplex. Stupid funnel just wouldn't put down, and we gave up when we ran out of light.

We had a really funny incident with Oklahoma Highway Patrol and an 18 wheeler. It was scary as hell when it happened, but is funny looking back on it.

We ended up on the north edge of a tornadic cell and took 35 to get south of it so we were out of the way (the hook was about 2 miles to our SW, and we could see the funnel).

So we're driving down 35 and some trucker had pulled off on the earlier cell and gotten stuck in the mud. An Oklahoma DPS trooper had the road blocked (one lane due to construction) so they could get a tow truck in there to get the guy out.

So we pull up and the cop is sitting there, and my roomie starts honking at him. Cop walks up to my window and says "is there a problem?" I say "well, we're trying to get the hell out of the way of that tornado that's forming over there *points in the direction of the funnel* but you're blocking the freaking road!"

Trooper turns around, sees the funnel, and says "oh shit". Tells the trucker to hop in his squad car and tells the tow truck to book it south. So we're in a tow truck/OHP caravan with about 20 cars behind us hauling ass down 35 at probably 80-85 in a 60 mph construction zone to get south of the funnel.

Good times!

:lol We did have a big chase team behind us at one point. I couldn't make out the logo on the side but they had all kinds of weather equipment all over the four SUVs in the team.

We got to Denton and had to make a call on the western storms (Manny alluded to them on page 19) or heading north to Ardmore. We chose to head for Ardmore with the idea that the storms would just keep coming in waves based on the radar at the time. We made it to Thackerville just across the Red River and the cell just to our west got tornado warned. Pulled over on 35 and watched it roll in.

I will say it was a total adrenaline pump to start things off. Very first storm we chose to intercept got tornado warned, and we sit there with the sirens going off in Thackerville and watch a wall cloud drop down. Didn't produce a funnel, which was frustrating as hell. I think if we had gotten a tornado on the first storm we would have just turned around and come home :lol

We pretty much just bounced between Thackerville and Ardmore. Got mucked up into the second storm that came into Ardmore. Watched the wall cloud drop and the funnel come down, then the rain started coming down in sheets. We were sitting in the car watching the rotation come within a half mile of us. Were turned around on 77 ready to bail south out of the way. The thing got rain wrapped and we couldn't see jack.

As mentioned, an 18 wheeler got flipped just north of us, hope the driver is doing okay. Tried to make it south for the Gainesville, TX confirmed tornado but got too dark and too chaotic too quickly so we just called it a night.

AHF, good shit man. Sounds like you had a blast! Glad you got to do it and were smart enough not to approach the storms. I get really irritated everytime I see video from people within 100 yards of a fucking tornado. :tu

Yeah, as I mentioned before the chase, we make it a mission to stay south and east of the storm as much as possible. We had an exciting 10-15 minutes or so where we had to punch through a core when we realized that we were stuck on the north side of a storm that popped up and had a spotter confirmed tornado going on. We were hellbent on getting south of that as we weren't in a very good spot.

Made for a tense few minutes watching our GPS location relative to the hook echo on Radarscope (best app ever BTW!), but we cleared it in time to turn around and watch the wall cloud and funnel work to our north.

I will say we saw a LOT of chasers out today. Stopped counting at twenty obvious chase vehicles when things started getting crazy and I was focused on the radar, storms, and roads.

Stupid thing didn't touch down though, which was annoying.

We definitely had a blast on the trip. 4:30-8:30 went by in what felt like five minutes. It was just one TWarned storm after another coming. Crazy! Hope everything turned out alright for folks in Oklahoma, but I saw there were fatalities up north and west of OKC :(

Thank you very much. The TORCON (how reliable is this?) has Western Ky at an 8 out of 10 for tomorrow.

No idea what the hell TORCON is but it sounds like a stupid measurement developed by a private company such as the weather channel or accuweather.

The SPC has far western Kentucky in a high risk for today. Thats basically within about 50 miles of the mississippi and it drops off very steeply as you head east. High risk translates to about a 30% chance that there will be a tornado within 25 miles of any given point in that area.

MannyIsGod
05-25-2011, 08:23 AM
So TORCON looks to be pretty much the same as the SPC's forecast except they extened the range out to 50 miles so that they can produce bigger numbers and scare more people. This is the kind of shit that makes me hate TWC.

It looks to me the exact same as the SPC data except that if you extrapolate the distance from a center point to 50 miles. You allow a greater number but the exact same risk. Really I don't give a shit about 50 miles from any given point but. 25 is pushing it but that has more to do with the resolution of our forecasts. We want the distance to get smaller in order to increase the accuracy. Doubling it serves no purpose other than to artificially inflate the numbers.

Obviously you'll watch more if your number is higher. Its a crock of shit.

Yep. Tune in to the Weather Channel! You're a TOR:CON 9 tomorrow in your viewing area! Also LOL at their whole Great Tornado Chase thing they got going on. Trying to coattail Storm Chasers.

I will say that their coverage of Joplin and what happened was very, very good on Sunday.

People like to see tornadoes. People don't like to see tornadoes destroy homes or hurt people. That should be obvious. I really think the last person on this board who should be questioning the ethics of anything is you but what makes it even dumber is that no one here has control over what tornadoes do. People here ARE rooting for tornadoes but they're not rooting for tornadoes to hurt anyone.

Storm chasers do more for storm warning than any other group of people and they are responsible for saving lives each year. The professionals who do it gather a lot of valuable data.

So then whats the big deal about wanting a tornado to come down in an open field so he can see it? You're the one who brought up people losing their homes and implied it. Not me. The only way you can make it seem bad is by implying that is what people who want to see tornadoes root for. Otherwise 99% of people I come across think seeing a tornado is pretty damn neat.

I'm not sure you can call anyone "professionals". I guess the Storm Chasers guys, etc., but I hope you realize that while "doing it for science", they are also making money off selling the footage to television stations.

So, who's a worse human being? Someone who needs tornadoes to touch down and film them to make a living, or someone doing it recreationally and/or doing it as a public service?

For the record, my buddy that I chased with yesterday and I are both trained spotters, and would be obligated to report any sightings we make (all the areas we caught storms yesterday already had the sirens blaring but we would have called in to confirm to the NWS had we observed a touchdown so they could get the message out to the public).

Additionally, I'm a certified first responder, and would react as you'd expect if (and I hope not for everyone's sake) there was ever a situation with injured/trapped people that we came across in the event of a touchdown.

So while yeah, there was definitely some adventure in it for me, I'd like to think I'm a little more than some hack amateur chaser out to get his jollies from a twister.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I understand where you're coming from. Our planet fascinates me. From scuba to weather, it's just an interest of mine. Mother Nature can be beautiful one moment, destructive and deadly the next.

Other people have the same interests. With the proliferation of knowledge and easy access to the events (I mean come on - you've got guys streaming storms from a dashmounted camera these days), it's hard to not get caught up in the phenomenon.

Generally speaking, the weather itself is fun to watch and tornadoes are interesting (and rare). We're just seeing some really sh!tty luck this year with so many storms impacting populated areas.

1500 people reported missing in Joplin.... is this normal? That sounds absolutely outlandish to me.

Keep in mind basically all communication infrastructure in the town was destroyed. They are having to bring in portable cell phone towers to facilitate mobile phone access.

You also had people scatter to nearby communities to stay with friends, family, etc., people in shelters, hospitals, etc. If their home got totaled, they may not have a cell phone on them anymore, and obviously people can't call a home phone that isn't there anymore.

The 1500 number will go down as soon as some of those are reunited, but the death toll could still climb considerably.

Part of what is aiding to the confusion is that local LE and emergency services have not released names of identified deceased or those in hospitals. This is tied to privacy laws / notification of next of kin, etc., but in this case I think that policy is doing more harm than good.

A lot of the reunions and 'missing persons found' have come from people posting on facebook and the Joplin News website at this point. FEMA needs to figure out a better way to disseminate this information.

We never want to see somebody we know die, but when it comes to people we don't know, we don't show much remorse. It's only when the numbers of fatalities are large when we actually start to give a shit.

There's no denying that us meteorologists will subconsciously trade footage of an awesome up close F3 wedge tornado, in the country, even if it means that Hillbilly Joe the Farmer got killed. I mean seriously, when only 1 or 2 people die nobody really cares, we just want to make sure our footage is uploaded on youtube.

Storm chaser Chad Cowan documented this strong tornado that affected Southwest City, MO on May 22, 2011 -- this was the same day as the devastating Joplin, MO EF-5. As the tornado approached town, Chad's main focus shifted from photography to alerting authorities, as no sirens were going off and residents were in danger of being caught off guard by this destructive tornado. According to the NWS, Tulsa, "Two double-wide manufactured homes were destroyed, a permanent home was severely damaged, barns and outbuildings were destroyed, a number of other homes were damaged, many hundreds of trees were snapped or uprooted, and many power poles were snapped."

yeah,i think it has something to do with either alien or government aircraft,it might be used as a tunnel to get from one destination to another

Usually HAARP related events have bright colored lights, kind of like the aurora up in Alaska..... That is a sign they are messing with the Ionosphere..

it may soundd crazy but i believe HAARP is creating a cloud tunnel to either alien or government ufos, most liekly secret government aircraft but still, until they figure out why and how its formed im sticking by my opinion, :lmao :lmao :lmao

Finally got a chance to watch the video. No way thats is outflow related. Its either a cold front or a "sea breeze" boundry coming off that lake. They could definitely form on an outflow but I'd imagine any type of boundary line could do it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcus_cloud

A roll cloud is a low, horizontal, tube-shaped, and relatively rare type of arcus cloud. They differ from shelf clouds by being completely detached from other cloud features. Roll clouds usually appear to be "rolling" about a horizontal axis. They can be described as a solitary wave or a soliton, which is a wave that has a single crest and moves without changing speed or shape. One of the most famous frequent occurrences is the Morning Glory cloud in Queensland, Australia. One of the main causes of the Morning Glory cloud is the mesoscale circulations associated with sea breezes that develop over the Cape York peninsula and the Gulf of Carpentaria. However similar features can be created by downdrafts from thunderstorms and are not exclusively associated with coastal regions.
Coastal roll clouds have been seen over California, the English Channel, Shetland Islands, Lithuania, Eastern Russia, other maritime regions of Australia, off the Mexican coast in the Sea of Cortez, Uruguay, in the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and Ontario and Campos dos Goytacazes and Coronel Vivida bay in Brazil.

Well, of course Manny is right. I had a Roll (Arcus-type) cloud mixed up with a shelf (Arcus-type) cloud.

At least I had the Arcus part right :lol

According to FB, Reed and D2 got an intercept as well. Storm chasers is going to be epic this fall, fucking epic.

Yesterday will probably be the last big tornado event. Means it's time for Hurricane season.

I'd wait before saying this is the end. The spring time pattern is fully in place and long range models don't really have it breaking down within a couple of weeks AFAIK. That storm that caused yesterday's outbreak dropped temps here into the low 40s the past two nights and highs for us didn't even crack 80. They got snow in the Much of the Rockies north of NM. Snow levels were 10,000 feet but it is late June after all.

Pretty strong storm system.

apparently there were quite a few tornado reports in Nebraska today

I just got back from Omaha, was there for the College World Series. Me and my buddies went chasing on Monday. We didn't get quite as close as the TIV :lol but I did get to see my first tornado on Monday.

That storm actually formed a couple of different twisters. We intercepted at Henderson, NE, and followed it north/northeast past Bradshaw, Benedict, Stromsberg, Osceola. Damage surveys had this at an EF-2, and finishing as an EF-3!

Second twister was Spring Creek, Monroe, Humphrey, Madison. Actually think that was two different ones, we lost a lot a lot of ground at Silver Creek. Stopped to let several emergency responder vehicles go by to a couple of collapsed houses :(, and the river crossing was a PITA.

Was glad to hear when we got back to the hotel that night that no one was hurt :tu

We also drove through Fremont, NE on the way back to Omaha shortly after a severe storm went through there. We ate some dinner and the people at the restaurant told us they were pretty sure that a tornado went through there.

We went and looked at the damage where they told us to go look - lots of trees down, several fences, and that was all I could see in the rain/dark. Turned in a damage report to the NWS back at the hotel. They went out and checked the next day and came back with an EF-1 after initially categorizing as straightline winds on Monday evening.

Closest we got was about three miles from the twister, will throw up some pics when I get fully recovered from the trip.

I'd say last April's huge outbreak was the most "hyped" day I've ever seen.
