Pretty sure you weren't serious but I can actually understand this easily because the US is built on immigration. However, I can't understand fucks like Rossi. :flippoff that bitch.

Yeah... considering he grew up in the States... he would be a tide-turner for the NT...

It's a fucking game. It's not like the countries are going to war. Apples and oranges.
Bullshit it's apples to oranges. If an American was at Mexico's stadium cheering for America during an America @ Mexico soccer game, he'd be lucky to leave with all of his limbs if America won. Lets not even pretend Mexico views a victory over America in soccer no different than a victory over other countries. The people I see who claim to be fans of Mexico's soccer team talk by far the most about Mexico's soccer team when Mexico is playing America. I never hear fans of Mexico's soccer team talk about how Mexico is gonna dominate Jamaica or Cuba. The victories they seem to care most about are victories over America.

You got me. People who use America for jobs, a better life, and an environment that doesn't have a 50% chance of being overrun by drug cartels should cheer for America. If Mexico was so much better than America, the Mexican soccer fans in America would live there.

Yes Mr. Stereotype... :lol Generalize much?

Who someone cheers for in a sporting event has little to do with Patriotism... not that I'd expect you to understand...

BTW the Mexican drug cartels are empowered by US consumers... the problem originates here... but of course, you seem to be blind to that supply/demand relationship as well... most anti-Mexican bigots are.... :wakeup

They're not empowered by US customers nearly as much as the US government keeping drugs illegal for no reason.

A crooked/stupid government doesn't deter me from cheering for the US's soccer team tbh.

:lmao saying it's not the government. There are always gonna be drug addicts no matter what, the only way you could completely stop drug cartels is making all drugs legal so they can't be sold illegally at insane prices.

Last I checked, there's no drug cartels out there selling cigarettes.

Not that disimilar to the all-mighty Messi [not mocking him as Leo is my favorite player and possibly will be the greatest ever when it's all said and done]... and really just for the sake of validating your argument that 11 goals in 45 NT caps somehow minimizes Dos Santos as a NT player...

Lionel Messi:
56 NT caps with Argentina, 17 goals...

extrapolating Dos Santos' 45 caps to 56 caps, puts him at 13.7 goals...

And how's this for kicks... again, just for number's sake...

Javier "Chicharito" Hernández:
29 NT caps with Mexico (late start with the NT, here only recently in Sept. 2009), 21 goals...

extrapolating Hernández's 29 caps to 56 caps, puts him at 40.6 goals... :wow

Which was exactly my point... if people rag on Messi and say his goalscoring with the Argentina NT has been pretty abysmal, yet he scores more than Gio, then how come Gio hasn't been nothing short of average? :lol

I already said Chicharrito is the real deal. If he had a skilled playmaker to feed him (ie: a guy like Xavi, or Pastore) he would look 10x better.

It's because they play similar roles on the National Team as creators... Giovanni's assists weren't listed on Wiki, but the numbers would be pretty similar to Messi's...

I also brought out this comparison for a secondary reason... to show that Mexico's NT style better suits Dos Santos' game than the styles at the club teams he elected to play for after leaving Barcelona FC.... much like Barcelona's style better suits Messi's game than the style he's been forced into playing on his NT.

Demeriting Dos Santos because he hasn't exceled at club level, would be like saying Leo isn't great simply because he hasn't achieved much on the NT. It's a reflexive argument.

To me both players are great when thrust into a system that suits their game (obviously Leo is the world's greatest in this context).

So you can say you dislike Giovanni's game, and perhaps his 'attitude' (though I haven't seen enough of this behavior to suggest it's a chronic issue), but you can't really argue that he's a mediocre talent. At least not when you're basing it on subjective and circumstancial arguments more so than his performance on the pitch (when the game style caters to his forte)...

Yes, the legality question is certainly an issue... but it shouldn't mask the accountability that you and others in this nation wish to disregard. LOL "there's always gonna be drug addicts..." that's a weak argument. The Government doesn't pay the cartels to keep them in power, only the money from the consumers' pockets can do that...

Face it... you've been justifying your hatred for Mexicans all these years using the wrong argument... just more sterotyping on your part... Just calling it like it is, you racist bigot.

What's worse is that I probably have a deeper understanding of what being an American represents, I probably embody more of it's ideals than you do... and know its history far better than you... it's a shame you feel I should be of Anglo descent to embrace that sentiment...

Further still, pretty soon Chicharito will be the Mexican National Team's all-time greatest scorer (topping Borgetti's 46)... he hasn't even feasted on the CONCACAF yet (this was his first CONCACAF regional tournament - and the opposition was select [wait 'til he plays the likes of Martinique, St. Kitts, Guadaloupe, etc... :lol ])

I have to get into this tasty thread.

Mexicans, who would you rather beat on football: USA or Argentina?

Of late Argentina has had Mexico's number... especially in big tournament KO stages...

When one considers Mexico's head-to-head NT records versus other nations... Mexico has fared pretty well against most nations and obtained a winning record against most of them or drawn even with them... only a select few countries (only 6 :wow) have obtained winning records against the Mexican NT... and three of those 6 (Israel, Libya, and Luxembourg were due to a 1-game sample size, Australia also has a small sample size... only Brazil, and to a lesser extent, Spain, have shown consistent dominance in their record against the Mexican NT)... Mexico knocked France off that short list by beating them in last year's World Cup....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_national_football_team_record

Anyways, volume-wise Brazil has handed Mexico the most defeats (20) [though Mexico has finally thrown that monkey off its back of late... and doesn't fear them as much anymore] followed by the USA (15) and then Argentina (12).

So yeah... both Argentina and the US have been the proverbial "thorn on Mexico's side" over the last decade...

In that context it should follow that the satisfaction gained from victory would be about the same (even while many choose to throw political context into the mix - I don't)...

But given Argentina's class, there is more satisfaction when Argentina is beat...

edit: 6 nations (I originally left off Spain)

Argentina without a doubt...

We know we can beat the U.S., and they're really nowhere near Argentina in terms of skill (obv.).

The fact that we've played better then Argentina in some games and still managed to lose them, makes me even want to beat them more.

I call BS on Mexicans would rather beat Argentina. The only circumstance that would be true would be in the World Cup, in which case as a US fan I'd rather see the US beat (insert whoever we are playing) over beating Mexico in the Gold Cup.

Mexico beating Argentina in a friendly is nowhere near as important as losing to the US in a WCQ or Gold Cup.

Beating Argentina in a friendly might be better than beating the US in a friendly - but the US and Mexico usually play each other in 3 or 4 meaningful games each cycle (depending if the side playing in the Confederations Cup bothers to send a real team to the Gold Cup before the World Cup), and I venture to say those are bigger than any friendly that either side might play. Thoughts, El Tri fans?

As a US fan, I'd say beating Spain in the '09 Confederations Cup was about equal to what beating Mexico in a beginning of cycle Gold Cup final would be.

Of course it's a game, but why would you ever root against your own country? That's probably why so many Americans are racist against Mexican Immigrants because they don't assimilate. Same reason so many people hate guidos in New York because they don't assimilate. They aren't really Italian but they'd pick Italy over the U.S. anyday for any reason.

I remember a while back when people were protesting something immigration related, the protestors were flying Mexico's flag. It's the same thing and I don't get it.

I watch every single Mexico game, friendly or WC, wherever I may be in the world. I've done it since I can remember

And now all of a sudden I'm supposed to change all of that and root for the USA because NOW this fucking country is starting to like soccer? Don't fucking think so

It really has nothing to do with the final match or a friendly concept of it.

The truth is, since 2008, Mexico has had the tools to beat the U.S., the managers have just done a horrible job of putting the pieces together.. until now. The team still has a lot to work on, but given that we have given Argentina troubles in the past, and teams like Brazil.. I would much rather have a win against either of those teams than a gold cup finals win against the U.S.

Anyone who knows anyone about soccer would've predicted Mexico to win Saturday... It was really an easy pick, and although they struggled to score the first couple of minutes and the US capitalized on it.. they were still the better team and they proved it.

I can't say Mexico is better than Argentina and Brazil for obvious reasons, but I know this team has what it takes to be on their level... or close to it.

Beating them would be the only way to find out.. beating the U.S. however, would prove what we already know.

That would never happen with Mexico.

But don't you think it should? That's not their home country. In time, it'll end up not even being their parents' home country.

It's only natural to develop a certain loyalty to the country where you've been raised. Especially if the liberties and freedoms of that country have afforded you opportunities to be successful. Opportunities that certainly wouldn't be available in many other countries, namely Mexico.

You don't have to kiss the Great Seal every morning, but it's puzzling to see people who live, work and reap all the benefits of the US fly Mexican flags and show little to no respect towards the US.

There's a certain pride that comes with watching "your" country's team beat an opposing country's team. So it's disingenuous, at best, for Mexican fans to claim this was simply a soccer game. It was seemingly the Big Bad USA getting pummeled by lowly Mexico.

There's an overt and inveterate hatred between fans of El Tri and the US soccer team. And it has little to do with soccer.

There are many reasons for that, and they're more political than anything...

Most of my friends, Latinos of course.. born and raised in the U.S. with parents who were born and raised in the U.S. were cheering for Mexico on Saturday.
Most of these people will more than likely have kids who will also cheer for Mexico, it's going to happen.. that doesn't mean they won't embrace what they have in the U.S. or that they're not loyal to the U.S. . Most of them are going to college or have already developed a career, are good citizens, and just good Americans over all.. cheering for something that has been part of their heritage doesn't mean they don't appreciate what they have now. Not rooting for Donovan or Clint won't make them bad Americans in any way, that's just ridiculous to even mention.

Because you tell me I'm supposed to or I'm not being loyal to my country? What the fuck kind of bullshit argument is that?

What the fuck does rooting for the Mexican soccer team have anything to do with the loyalty I have for this country? That's just plain ridiculous.

There's Anglo Americans as it is that don't even bother watching American games, are you trying to blame us for the USMNT's failure?

I don't understand the whole issue behind me rooting for the Mexican team, being that I'm Mexican... or any Hispanic for that matter.

I don't know where you were born or raised, or what type of culture you grew up with. And i'm certainly not asking you, or telling you that you should change who you root for. It just seems that, over time, people born and raised in the US wouldn't need to be asked to root for the US.

You seem to identify with Mexican culture and how Mexican's view their Soccer team. It's part of Mexican heritage. It's a source of pride. Yet you claim it's only soccer.

Don't you think being able to cheer for whoever you want is part of being an American? You should celebrate that rather than trying to question. I do think it's only soccer, but like I've said.. I've been doing this for a very long time, and it's really not going to change, nor will it change for Hispanics who were born here. Reacting the way you are reacting really makes me not want to root for the U.S. even more..

You are obviously not the first to "complain" about this and not understand it.. most people throw out racist remarks when they do... just look around this thread. I don't know if you're white, black, or what... if you're not Latino or Hispanic, you probably won't understand why we do it.. and if you're Latino, then something's wrong with you if you don't understand.

Like I just said there are a lot of things that don't really go our way in this country.. like the racism, the immigration laws that keep popping out... and although I understand it... it makes some Latinos not root for the U.S., sometimes it's things like these.. when I'm really being told to root for the U.S. or I'm not loyal..

You say it's only about soccer, and then you begin talking about immigration laws that make Mexicans root against the US. When I say Immigration laws, racism, I never say this is how I feel... but I know this is how some Hispanics feel.. what I do know for a fact though is that, the majority of the people rooting for Mexico, do it because they feel it's a better team and it's full of passion, not because they hate the U.S. I really don't take pride in Mexico beating the U.S. (for the what? 4th time?), if anything I just like to brag about it to fans like Worlds_Finest and Scott, and who were talking shit prior to the game and have been for quite a while before this game, and I don't know if you know this but I'm a fan of the Mexican NT. I'm no different than a San Antonio resident cheering for the Lakers against the Spurs. I say people like you make me not want to cheer for the U.S. because of the aftermath of the game, people telling us we SHOULD root for the U.S., Go back to Mexico, go mow my lawn spic, the only thing Mexicans are good at...

For a predominately Hispanic town theres alot of racist insults thrown at 1st/2nd generation Mexicans. All these niggas' grandparents and great-grandparents must be rolling over in their graves.

You have to remember that a few vatos are set to only be here temporarily. They come to make their money and they're going back after X amount of time to seemingly live like kings back in Mexico. Some mexicans do it every winter, some do it after 5-10 years, others after 10-20 years.

There's obviously a good chunk that does stay, and those are normally the ones that end up embracing the US culture, especially as generations go by.

To feed their families, not to live like kings. From where Im from sons and fathers rotate, working for 1-2 yrs at a time while the others stay back home. Its pretty sad actually you have 14-15 yr olds, not only moving out but coming to a new country to carry the burden of supporting an entire family back home.

My opinion in that if you grew up in San Antonio and LA and are of Mexican heritage, then you have the right to root for Mexico. But if your family is like mine, and has been in Texas since it was part of Mexico or you're a 7th generation American (in other words, you've been Americans a long time) then you should also root for the US. (Same is true of the other half of my heritage... my German family has been in the US even longer).

If you are 1st generation American, then I give you leniency for Mexico being your number 1 team. After that, then I think you are the same as a Laker fan born and raised in San Antonio.

lol oohhhh man, interesting convo, sort of.

I have some friends that have actually discussed some similar things with me, and I gotta say it seems people simply can't always understand the other point of view. Some of my more random/distant friends have been surprised to hear me talk about supporting Argentina during whatever given competition is going on, especially when facing the US. I was born in Argentina, only my nuclear family lives in the US, and I've grown up practically all my life in the US, but I always will support the Argentine national team because that's just the way it's been. A lot of Americans that I've talked to seem to create their own political implications, when there really are none; they may just read way more into it for their own good.

I enjoy living in the US and support many things about the country, but I identify more with Argentinian culture overall and that has been true all of my life and when it comes to sports, I will always support Argentina before the US.

With your attitude, you likely will never find out for sure as you'll likely spend your entire life in the US, which is understandable, you have no reason to leave. Don't act like if you get a huge raise and promotion at your international corporation to temporarily live in England, that you would abandon your traditions and begin supporting England in sports.

With your logic, you should only follow leagues within your country, so tbh no one in Europe or elsewhere should be following any American league.

You never excluded that scenario, you simply said if you moved to another country, like Denmark, and received their benefits, you would support their teams in sports.

Either way, it' still ridiculous even if it is permanent. TBH, if you were to move to another country permanently, supporting either that country or the US when they face each other can both be supported pretty easily.

Even still, it'd be understandable if you still flew your US flag as a resident of Denmark. Considering you weren't born and raised there. And you'd receive the same, and even better, opportunities in the US. You wouldn't be fleeing the US because there's no work here. But depending on the circumstances, it could still be somewhat disrespectful to the people of Denmark because their government is "allowing" you to be there. I see so many people talking about their Mexican pride and heritage, yet they weren't born or raised in Mexico and some have never even been to Mexico.

The majority of mexican immigrants are hard working people who just wanted a better life for their family and knew they could find it here. The thing that gets me is that they still view the US as the bad guy. It's an "us vs. them" attitude where they couldn't care less about the US and would rather have their own little Mexico here. It's one thing to be proud of your roots. It's another thing to continuously shit on the your "home" country. The two shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Wouldn't this be expected given a large %age of US citizens have that same attitude, towards many minority groups??? Kind of unrealistic to expect immigrants to embrace US culture immediately if they are constantly harassed over stupid things they can't control. It can take generations, not much different than any newcomers to the US. You think Mexican kids like being bullied and harassed in school by people of the dominant race in the US?? Makes a lot of sense they don't forget their culture and immediately start rockin bandanas with cutoff sleeves sporting a bald eagle on one shoulder and a US flag on the other. (lol what a douche bag reference I just did)

I've heard it plenty of times at several levels (high school, middle school, late elementary), obviously it comes out differently depending on the age. But there's harassment everywhere.

umm... yeah, because your life experience and school are definitely the inter-cultural gauge by which all other schools are measured and defined... :lol

I went to a predominantly 'white' school... Midway through my senior year I received death threats because a certain group of people didn't want me to graduate as the school's Valedictorian... Little did they realize their threats only made me work harder to achieve that goal, as I became the school's first Hispanic Valedictorian (and were talking about South Texas here, where Mexicans supposedly lurk behind every tree and brush :lol)... If I'm not mistaken my cumulative GPA is still the school's best.

Never once, however, did I use that experience to suggest that the whole country felt that way, or even the majority of our society.

In any event, white washing racism - real or not - doesn't make it go away. And like I said, all you did was perpetuate more racist posts when he saw it was working. Seems very counterproductive to argue with him if your goal is to reduce the amount of racism on ST.

How does you arguing with me, change any of it..?

Fact is, I don't go around asking users if they're trolls or not... So when I see that sort of BS posted it still boils my blood... It doesn't matter if their POV/take is faked or not, it still has to be squashed... I know you understand that people 'out there' actually embrace those anti-Mexican sentiments. They blame 'us' for all of our country's supposed ills... How do I know if DoK is not among them...?

Also, this is not some morally-neutral subject like a "Hakeem vs. David," or a "Shaq vs. Tim" type argument... despite the subjectivity involved in both of those arguments, and the subjectivity involved when discussing 'racism'... So if one were to 'troll' one of the former threads, while annoying, they aren't doing anything inherently reprehensible... Trolling on the subject of racism, however, is... I don't take racism lightly, and I'm sorry if you feel my passion against that cause blurs my better judgement to engage in counterargument...

Question, "would anyone here be stupid enough to "troll" on the subject of pedofilia..."? I was under the impression that 'hate' speech was just as unlawful as the former...
