Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25KOs) announced to his 1.2 million followers on Twitter that he plans to return on September 17th to challenge the new WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22KOs) of California. Ortiz, who moved up from junior welterweight, won the title in April with an impressive twelve round decision over previously undefeated Andre Berto.
The fight between Ortiz and Mayweather had been rumored for weeks, although both camps continued to deny the negotiations. Mayweather has not fought since last May's dominating decision win over "Sugar" Shane Mosley. Mayweather-Ortiz is a sure fight to land on HBO pay-per-view, and Las Vegas is the likely location to host - although Dallas, Texas is another rumored location.
Mayweather's main rival, Manny Pacquiao, defends his WBO welterweight title against Juan Manuel Marquez in a trilogy bout on November 12.
"My fans have been waiting long enough. Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz. Sept-17 2011 for the WBC World Championship," Mayweather wrote on his Twitter page.

Think floyd wins this by UD. I'll be rooting for victor though.
"I am ready to return to the ring and give my fans a fantastic night of boxing by fighting the best out there and for me, that is Victor Ortiz," Mayweather said. "He is the current champion and an extremely talented fighter who showed amazing skills, and heart, in his last performance against Andre Berto.
he's an idiot and a coward. he can go 42-0 and everyone who knows anything about boxing will know that it will always be tainted by his running from manny.

Mayweather fighting a dangerous Prime Welterweight compared to Pac who is fighting a 39 year old lightweight making him move up to welterweight (2 weight divisions).. He fought a 40 year old Mosley coming of a loss and a draw to fucking sergio mora and before that he fought Margarito coming off a loss :lmao

Other then Berto, who has Ortiz fought to deserve an opponent like pacquiao? Also, didnt your boy Floyd make Marquez move up to 147 too? Didnt your boy Floyd also fight that 39 yr old Mosely?
I understand your point, but dont try to be comparing Mayweather with Pacquaio in terms of choosing opponents cuz you'll lose that battle.

First of all Mayweather isn't my boy, didn't i say i was rooting for Victor? I ain't a mayweather or pacquiao fan. I'm a boxing fan. I've shit on both and have given props to both. Both these niggas are cherry pickers don't even try and twist it. There is no losing battle to be had. Floyd fought Mosley who was coming off a KO win vs Margarito (and this was a Margarito in his prime coming off the beat down he gave cotto). Pacquiao fought a Mosley who was coming of a loss to mayweather and then a draw vs a scrub in Sergio Mora. You don't see a difference? And yes Mayweather also made marquez come up in weight and i shit on him for that as well, look it up.
What did Mosley do to deserve a shot against Pacquiao? Get fucking owned by Mayweather, and then embarrassed by Sergio Mora? :lol

Anyways it is good that he's back, really can't expect someone coming of a 16 month lay off to take on Pac as his first fight back.. Winner of this fight should/better fight Pacquiao.
@ maxipad-the best fight that can happen is not happening due to mayweather. ergo. most of the 'coward' comments are directed at him.

Just weeks ago pac fans were saying Ortiz would be great to have on pacs resume. Now these faggots are calling it trash. :lmao Ortiz is the current highest rated Welterweight.. Aside from Pacquiao this is the best fight available. Better than a shot mosley or an over the hill Marquez fighting in a weight class which he has proven before that he does not belong in. Marquez will give a much better performance than Mosley though you can count on that.

4 Mayweather myths Debunked
There are few athletes that generate the same level of controversy and debate as five-division world champ, Floyd Mayweather jr. From his days as a 21-year-old world champion wunderkind right through to his current status as world class, elite-level heat magnet, Mayweather has become a permanent part of the psyches of most fight fans.
Attacked by unfriendly media sources and his persistent legion of critics, Mayweather has often been his own worst enemy, refusing to acknowledge critics' assertions and playing the role of indifferent party boy. As a result, myths have popped up about the talented former Olympic bronze medalist and have been allowed to stay in the public forum, becoming part of conventional wisdom for some, regardless of whether the accusation is based in fact or not.
In the spirit of fair play, here's a look at the most persistent myths regarding Mayweather and why they are more fiction than fact:
Mayweather has ducked…
Mayweather's failure to fight guys like Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto continue to hound the former welterweight titlist, but what's seldom pointed out is the promotional barriers to making these bouts.
When Mayweather left promoter, Bob Arum, he made a powerful, spiteful enemy. He also ensured that any dealing with Arum's promotional company, Top Rank, would be as pleasant and easy as a root canal.
When he was criticized for not meeting Margarito's "challenge" in 2006, it's rarely mentioned that Mayweather had just left Top Rank, had pending legal action against Arum, and was unlikely to turn around immediately after leaving his promotional company and fight, once again, under his old promotional banner.
As for Cotto, it should be noted that by the time Cotto made his debut in the welterweight division, Mayweather had already captured the lineal welterweight title and was beginning negotiations for his money fight with Oscar De la Hoya.
If Arum had wanted to force a fight between his guys and then-WBC champ, Mayweather, he could've easily done so by positioning Margarito, Cotto, and Clottey within the rankings of the organization. Instead, Arum chose to position his fighters in every division, except the WBC.
Mayweather always fights smaller fighters
This is easy to debunk. Mayweather has only fought two fighters who moved up in weight to fight him, Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez— and Hatton was WBA welterweight champ a year prior. For the vast majority of his career, Mayweather has been the naturally smaller fighter.
Mayweather "cherry picks" his opponents
This isn't a myth at all. However, hardcore, observant fight fans will acknowledge that every top fighter strategically chooses the right opponent for the right price. Mayweather may, indeed, be a cherry picker, but this is nothing unusual at all. All professional prize fighters at the top of their game weigh risk vs. reward carefully when it comes to their bouts.
Mayweather is afraid of Pacquiao
"Afraid" is a heavy word to toss around when talking about a professional prize fighter who has been in competitive action since childhood. There aren't many cowards who fight for a living and have dominated the amateur and professional ranks, fighting fifteen past, present, or future world champions.
Mayweather did what he could to make the Pacquiao fight happen. Whether the request for random blood testing was just a psychological ploy or it represented a sincere concern on his part, the fact of the matter is that Mayweather came to terms quickly on all stipujations and even went to arbitration to settle the blood testing issue. During arbitration, as stated by the arbitrating judge, Mayweather would even go on to compromise on his request for true random testing, but it was Pacquiao who wouldn't budge.
Mayweather would move on after the fight fell apart and, by most accounts, hold firm on his demand for true, Olympic-style random blood testing— a stipulation Team Pacquiao has never conceded. The truth remains that on the one occasion where both Mayweather and Pacquiao were present for negotiations, it was Pacquiao who ultimately killed the deal.
Believe what you wish, but all the subsequent stories about Pacquiao agreeing to random testing and Mayweather turning down huge financial offers to take the fight have come from one source, and one source alone— Pacquiao promoter and jilted former member of Team Mayweather, Bob Arum.

Aside from Pacquiao who is the best available fighter at 147? I swear do you guys even watch boxing? And are you seriously bringing up past fights i thought we went over this already. I can play that too. IF Mayweather fought a shot de la hoy what version did pacquiao fight? a fucking corpse. Pacqiao fought a shot hatton who got KO'd by Mayweather (and btw Hatton was the WBA welterweight champion the year before).. etc. etc.. see i can play that game too. I'm not even a Mayweather or Pac fan i pretty much avoid talking about either fighter because the same shit is said over and over again. But yeah it's all the fighters fault not like their Promoters have any say.
tbh, i'm probably the only person who doesn't give a damn if these 2 fight or not. Boxing will live on with or without pac and may.

Well, no one now but back then, he could have gone up against Cotto or Margarito (before handwrapgate). I know they're Arum fighters and he didn't wanna deal with Bob's scheming ass but at least fight one of the two. Now @ 147, there's only one fight - that's Manny and that fight should happen but it won't.

totally agree here .... Oscar was shot pretty much in both fights. funny thing is he should have continued to use his jab against Floyd. And Hatton beat a paper champion in Collazo.
But yeah it's all the fighters fault not like their Promoters have any say.
tbh, i'm probably the only person who doesn't give a damn if these 2 fight or not. Boxing will live on with or without pac and may.
It will continue to live on but it's really gone to shit. Heavyweight Division is done with Dr. Steelhammer and Dr. Iron Fist continuing to win boring fights with countless jabs. Cruiserweight is non-existent. Light heavy has a 46 year old running shit and maybe Chad Dawson will finally get his head out of his ass.
Andre Ward vs Bute may bring some noise but nothing coming from 168. Ward vs. Froch in the SS Finals should be easy work for Ward.
Sergio Martinez got 160 locked. Nothing really there.
154 is shaky at best. Cotto? Dzindziruk?
147: Manny and Floyd. That's it....
140 is carrying boxing right now with Khan, Alexander, Bradley and my favorite Marcos Maidana.
and from straw to 135, you have many great fighters like Donaire, Gamboa and Darchinyan. But as long as these guys do not get in the ring and continue to have their belts stripped, boxing is gonna continue to take a back seat to MMA.

Boxing hasn't gone to shit man. Are you sure you're a fan? I mean unless you're a casual and only watch Pacquiao fight or Mayweather fight how the fuck can you say it's gone to shit? Last year was a great year for boxing and this year has already delivered great fights and en route to top last year. I agree with you on the heavier divisions except for 168 which there are still fights to be made after the super 6. and Klit vs Haye is a fight we have wanted and we're getting it this summer but aside from that i agree especially heavy weight.
Back in the day it was the heavier divisions that dominated to sport this generation its the lower divisions and there are a lot of fighters that are just breaking through. I agree about belt stripping and all and having so many fucking belts per division really does hurt the sport. Like you said 135 and down there are a ton of great fighters some of these cats will start moving up and have an impact in the higher weight classes. The young talent is there though.

Hindsight is 20/20. "Shot" de La Hoya or not, Pac was the underdog in that fight especially when DLH went spilt decision with PBF. People were worried that he maybe too small with Cotto, Margarito etc. Why do i defend Pacquiao? Cuz he fought all the top names in the welterweight division. Some maybe late, but he fought them. Only one really missing is Berto and PBF. Can you really say the same about PBF? Wheres the margarito fight, how bout Cotto, Berto etc...where are those big names 3-4 years ago? Blame all the promoters u want, but pac-PBF is gonna make enough money to go around. Just waiting on PBF to accept.

Honest opinion? Look bro i told you this shit has been beaten to death but i'll play your little game.
He should have fought them without catch weights or coming off losses. After May vs ODLH we all saw he was a shot fighter. He could have fought Margarito who was the hot WW at the time after he dismantled Cotto (Same can be said about Mayweather who should have fought either Cotto or Margarito when they where hot). . Instead he fights Hatton who again was already exposed and K.O.'d earlier by Mayweather. I give manny props for cotto but don't see why that fight had to be held at a catchweight either but w/e. :lol. He then fights Clottey who was coming of a loss. Seriously how do these guy get shots at Manny after loosing their previous fight? :lol
Then he fights Margarito who got KTFO by Mosley and was also suspended for a year and a half. He looked terrible against his tune up fight and then he fights Manny for the Light Middleweight title at 150, another catchweight :lol
And instead of Mosley? Who was also already shot and had just got dominiated by Mayweather and barley got a draw vs Mora. He could have fought Berto, bradley, ortiz.. shit anyone thats not Mosley and can fucking move would've been respectable at this point.
And lets go back to that his one and only fight at Lightweight. He fought the bum of the division David Diaz. He could have fought Juan Diaz and Casamayor instead of that bum.
Is that what you wanted to hear? Same shit that's always been said. :lol
I'll do floyds next if you want cuz like i said i ain't a fan of either fighter. :lol

ok...so you wanted little pacquiao (who was fighting at 130 against JMM and tested his abilty against Diaz at 135) to jump to 147 (without catchweights) and challenge the "hottest" Welterweight, Margarito.
ok buddy. Get real. Once again...Hindsight is 20/20 especially when DLH was the favorite against Pacman. Just because fighters lose a fight, it doesnt mean they are crap. Cotto only had one loss...he was still a legit fighter.
Tested his abilities against Diaz? Really. :lmao Diaz is a D level fighter at best don't give me that bull shit.
You want to get real ok Hindsight 20/20 your boy weighed in at 145 vs. Marquez on fight night. To put that into perspective 147 is the WW limit. "Little pacquiao" Weighed More Than OSCAR on fight night. Let me say that again incase you didn't comprehend the first time. "Little" Pacquiao outweighed Oscar De La Hoya. Pacquiao-148 Delahoya-147. and others in this thread aggreed that Oscar was already a shot fighter when he fought Mayweather so what does that say about the version Pacquiao fought? And about cotto didn't i say i give him props?
Are we going to keep going in circles?
TheNextGen
06-18-2011, 03:01 PM
ur a fight expert right...in case you dont know it...DLH was expect to come in on fight night in the high 150's....shockingly he didnt. You also know that even though 147 maybe the "limit" most fighters come in way higher then that on fight night...so even at 147, pacquaio is usually the smaller fighter.
Speaking of "comprehend", yes, i said TEST his abilities. Pac moved up and fought a bigger opponent. He OBVIOUSLY past his test and moved up to try DLH...he obviously found out he can hang in Welterweight and moved on to fight the top dogs (cotto, clottey etc.)
You really expect him to jump weight classes to fight the top dogs without seeing if he can hang with the ones with lesser talents. Once again..GET REAL BRO. Stop looking back at all his fights AS A WHOLE and try to change how history looked at it at THAT time.

Boxing hasn't gone to shit man. Are you sure you're a fan? I mean unless you're a casual and only watch Pacquiao fight or Mayweather fight how the fuck can you say it's gone to shit? Compared to what it usta be it seriously has. Basketball will always be my first love. It's done a lot for my life. Second is boxing. It keeps me in shape and I love the fight game. I grew up in the era of the 70s and 80s when you knew who was the champion in a weight class instead of this alphabet soup shit we have going on today. I saw the best fighters fight one another more than once instead of this crap we have going on today. Compared to that era, it's gone to shit. We had a few good fights last year, in the 70s and 80s, we would have had at least ten to twelve bouts battling for fight of the year. We'll never see that again. Duran and Leonard fighting twice in six months. The Four Aces: Hearns, Leonard, Hagler and Duran all fighting one another more than once.
The best jab in boxing Larry Holmes being lost because he was sandwiched between the retirement of Ali and a rising KO king in Tyson. A true champion, Ali, fighting Frazier and Norton thrice, Foreman, Liston twice and probably the hardest hitter in the heavyweight division back then, Ernie Shavers.
Yeah boxing have some up-and-comers but as for right now, it will never get back to what it once was. And if it does, it's gonna take a whole lot of shit cleaning to do so. Who in the fight game right now can shut done the country like Ali, Tyson and Leonard right now? Maybe Manny. Maybe Floyd because people wanna see him lose. Not many.
Like you said 135 and down there are a ton of great fighters some of these cats will start moving up and have an impact in the higher weight classesTake 140. There's no reason why Maidana, Alexander, Bradley and Khan haven't fought multiple times by now. Khan has fought Maidana (great fight). Alexander and Bradley mixed it up in what was a pretty boring bout. It usta be about being the best in the class and being a champion, now that the belts have come into play, it's about sanctioning fees, promoters and paydays. They need to go back to the original eight divisions and that will eliminate all this bullshit.

Cool life story, bro.
I can pull a quote from each decade saying boxing is dead, You can say it's not as popular as it was but don't give me that it's gone to shit. It's less popular in the States but boxing is growing and thriving in Europe right now. This year alone we've had 7 fight of the year canidates and it's still only June. Hopkins/Pascal 2, Maidana/Morales, Oritz/Berto, Arce/Vazquez jr, Juanma/Salido, Rios/Acosta, and Hernan Marquez/Luis Concepcion. And saying boxing is shit compared to the 80's is the same as saying Basketball is shit compared to how it was in the 80's. Has basketball gone to shit as well? 2000-2010 wasn't a good era in boxing? Gatti Ward triliogy, De la hoy, Mosley, Trinidad all in their prime. Barerra/Morales trilogy, Israel Vasques, Rafa Marquez quadriliogy :lol. Castillo/Corrales, Hopkins, Floyd, Manny i can go on and on, im sure im missing a lot of other fighters. We can go back another decade and find great fighters as well. Chavez, Roy Jones Jr in his prime, etc.. etc. And what country are we talking about being shut down because tyson never shut down the country. :lol. Pacquaio can shut down the Philipines, and basically any mexican fighter will shut down Mexico. And like i told you in my last post i agree about all the abc belts and the Heavyweight division being terrible.
Take 140. There's no reason why Maidana, Alexander, Bradley and Khan haven't fought multiple times by now. Khan has fought Maidana (great fight). Every sport has flaws bruh. And like i said before i agreed with you about all the belts and divisions. But tbh, If you're still really hung up on that just look at the ring rankings and you'll know who the best in the division is. At this point the belts are just used as promotional tools anyway. And yes it a shame that there isn't more American fighters but again that doesn't really affect me. A great fighter is a great fighter regardless of their nationality.
Guess we're going to have to agree to disagree on boxing being "shit." Even with it's flaws it's still far from being shit and they are making more money now then ever before. Ortiz.
Who was a bigger threat at Welterweight , Cotto vs Pac or Marquez vs Mayweather in 2009?
Who was a bigger threat at Welterweight , Clottey vs Pac or Mosely vs Mayweather in 2010?
Who was a bigger threat at Welterweight , Margarito vs Pac or (Oh wait, Mayweather didnt fight anyone around that time).
Who was the bigger threat at Welterweight , Mosely vs Pac or (Oh wait, Mayweather didnt fight anyone around that time).
I answered yours, so Answer mine.
Props to Mayweather for FINALLY stepping up and fighting someone although, he is fighting someone who hasnt fought a big name other then Berto.

Someone that actually gets it. :toast
These fools are so damn biased they can't see how big of a hypocrite they are. They're somehow trying to shit on Floyd vs Ortiz yet they have no Problem with Pac fighting JMM at welterweight. I don't even know why he's posting resume's now since i never even said anything about "floyd" having a better resume than Pac or anything like that. :lol. And the fact that i appear to be the only one that's calling it like it is i'm labled a Floyd fan which is ridiculous. :lmao
Dont really see anyone shitting on Mayweather vs Ortiz. Just shitting on Mayweather.

Thats cuz Maxi got offended that people were clowning his boy Mayweather. Remember...Mayweather is not ducking Pacquiao. Mayweather fights the best in each division. Check his resume. The promoters arnt making the mayweather/pac fight happen. Not Mayweather. Its cuz Pacman was supposed to take the olympic style testing. Mayweather isnt a pussy...he fights the best! Why fight Margarito, Clottey, Berto in the past 4 years when you can fight Mosely, Marquez and Ortiz...the top dogs at welterweight!!

I said what you're posting makes you out to be a Pac fanatic, that's it. Any criticism towards Pacman appears to get you branded as a Floyd fan for some reason. Thus, you should be subject to the same.
It just seems dumb that people came into a thread attacking the OP about Mayweather considering who Manny is fighting (and had fought recently).
and who exactly has Mayweather fought recently that differs from PAcquiao? Hey...im not too cool with the JMM fight or Mosely fight...but at the time...there were really no other fighters to go after. Ortiz just became a household name cuz of the win against Berto last month. Thats its. Other then that, Pac has pretty much fought everyone in the WW division but Berto.

How? I never said Mayweather fought the best in the division. So again? Can't handle a little criticism of Pac? Don't forget this is Floyd vs Ortiz thread and it's funny that yall come raging in here trying to delegitimize the fight when pac is over here fighting 40 year old marquez at welterweight.

noone was clowning on Ortiz homie. The shtick in here is that Mayweather needs to fight pac...untill that happens, people gonna clown mayweather...not dissing Ortiz. Its just Ortiz is not pacquiao. Pac takes less slack for the fact that he is still fighting. Yes, some maybe older, but the fact is that he still has fought a majority of the WW division.

Come on homie...big difference between cherry picking and ducking. You should know that.
Pacquiao be thinking "I think i can win these fights, i may win..i may lose...but i think i have a good chance on winning." CHERRY PICKING
Mayweather be thinking "fuck i may win or i may lose, fuck it, i aint fighting him." DUCKING
Once you make a name for yourself, like mayweather and pacquiao, people expect some sort of cherry picking. But you dont expect ducking especially when the public is demanding a fight.

i dont think alot of people were not too cool with JMM fight either. I think its easier to swallow since the first two figths were extremely close. I believe JMM is gonna get his ass handed to him at 147, but thats on him for demading to fight pac.
The Mayweather clowning is the fact that he doesnt fight often and people expect him to step up and fight pac. Lets hope the Ortiz fight is a tune-up. Based on pacs latest fights, it seems like he just wants to take it easy untill mayweather decided to negotiate again.

like i said earlier if the winner of Ortiz/May and Pac/Marq don't fight it would be a fucking joke. It has to happen.
It's only a matter of time before the cats at 140 jump up to WW so even if that fight doesn't happen Pac will have some more young up and comers to fight.

I'm not making the argument that Mayweather has fought more. There's a million things you can say to point out the idiocy of PBF over the past few years.
But what I didn't get what shitting on the fight (or only Mayweather as some people are claiming) in this thread when:
A) Manny is booked, so a fight couldn't have happened now
B) Manny is fighting old ass JMM
There's a time a place to hate on PBF, just not here.
