Not true at all. As hater said, the sport makes a ton of money through television as is. The 94 cup was broadcast with commercials and that was a fucking disaster if I ever saw one. The television broadcasts are doing fine and are already increading. ESPN is showing more soccer on its networks now and that will simply increase as the European leagues come back into season this fall.

I wonder if the MLS already has a larger percentage of its games nationally broadcast than the NBA. That would not surprise me at all. Assuming 10-14 games per week for the MLS and at least 4 of those are national games on a weekly basis then its fair to say that might be the case.

There will be some interest when the national team plays in World Cups but it soon fades and that MLS is a joke as compared to the big three national sports.

Some fo those game are great defensive games with great goalie saves. But for the most part those games have long boring stretches of play.

Japan especially in the first half played very boring, kicking the ball backwards and just caring about holding possesion playing defense and not pushing forward for the most part. The US could not put the ball in the goal or else they win easily. The game should have been over by halftime.

Of course you have all of the play calling and waiting, commercials all of the fucking time (my biggest pet peeve w/ NFL: auto commercials after every kick... punt, FG, kick off...there's nothing I love more than this sequence: TD, extra point, commercial, kickoff, commercial). Then you have your other large chunk of incomplete passes. A good amount of stupid short 5-10 yard outs. Finally, you hopefully have a few nice runs around the outside for many yards and a few nice long passes completed. There are exciting plays, but it's not like watching an entire game is filled with awesome shit..which is what you're making it out to be and is what Americans do when they argue that soccer is boring.


Obviously, different things are exciting to different people and that's why we have all of the different sports we have. Everything else is completely subjective. Except for one thing: the amount of time actually playing the game vs. the amount of time spending to complete (or watch) the game.
For some reason, Americans LOVE a tiny former/latter ratio ... time playing/time for game to end.

Hey, here's something I hate. An increased number of booth reviews in the 2011 season is going to lead to longer games, says the NFL's former vice president of officiating.

A new rule goes into effect this year stating that every scoring play that happens in the course of an NFL game will be automatically reviewed by the replay official. Here's an explanation of that process from Mike Pereira at FOXSports.com:

If an official rules a score (touchdown, field goal, safety or extra point) during a game, the replay official will automatically review the play. If there is any question as to whether the ruling is correct, they will buzz down to the referee and ask him to come to the monitor to review the play. If the replay official confirms the ruling is correct, they will buzz the referee indicating he is clear to let the scoring team attempt the extra point, or kick off if the scoring play was a field goal, safety or extra-point attempt. A coach will not be allowed to challenge the ruling of a score. It's not necessarily that I'm anti-replay; if the right call can be made, then it should be. But in the quest to "get it right," it seems like the flow of the game is often completely discarded, and I'd argue that that's way more important to the NFL's viewing experience. And now we're building more stoppages into the game, right after its most exciting plays?

Unnecessary stoppages brutalize a game's watchability. It's like these "reality" shows, where they pound in unending pauses in an effort to manufacture artificial drama, but end up just being irritating as all hell. I don't know how anyone can stand that.

We should be looking at ways to shorten games, not make them longer. If a 1 p.m. game isn't going to end until 5, I want it to be because it went into overtime and gave us free football. It seems like we're getting to the point now that a game won't end on time (before the 4/4:15 games start) unless it happens to be contested by two teams that favor a ball-control offense.

And think about this, too: You know that super-annoying thing that networks do when, after a score, there's a commercial break, they come back for the kickoff, and then have another commercial break, and it seems like there's about a half hour between plays from scrimmage?

Throw a replay break into that, too. You'll see the same Coors Light commercial six times before anyone takes another snap.

Well frankly just using attendance to gauge popularity is useless. For MLS fans, anyone and everyone who wants to attend specific games can and will. They play in bigger stadiums, tons of availability, and there isn't high demand. Basically as long as you are within reasonable range, there probably isn't a game you can't go to while grabbing single game tickets. Fans of big market teams have to pay much more as basketball arenas have limited capacity, and certain teams sell out often. There aren't millions watching from home with the MLS, like there is with the NBA, that's for sure. And obviously the MLS doesn't sell nearly as much merchandise.

I don't see the point in the comparison, the two leagues can be close in attendance averages on a per game basis, but they are in completely separate universes in terms of popularity/the entire product.

Don't even mention Superbown Sunday. The entire american public as a whole gains a few million pounds of fat during that weekend alone. It's pretty sad.

On the other hand, soccer, the world's sport is the sport for a skinny and healthy public. You don't get much time to walk to the refrigerator or even stuff your face with food cause anytime there could be a good play. And the only stoppage is a 15 minute halftime.
