The 100-day countdown for The Shops at La Cantera has begun as eager shoppers await the Sept. 16 opening of San Antonio's newest and most upscale mall.
The excitement encouraged owner General Growth Properties Inc. to unveil a roster of 105 tenants that have signed leases at the open-air retail village at Loop 1604 and Interstate 10.
The 105 include notable stores such as Tiffany & Co., Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Sony and Tommy Bahama.
About 15 more shops are still in the negotiating phase.
General Growth spokesman Robert E. Rubenkonig Jr. said 25 percent of the retailers are new to San Antonio, which is uncommon for projects like this.
"We are thrilled with the retailers' response, and it shows the retail community is excited about doing business in San Antonio," Rubenkonig said. "Stores like Tiffany are legends, and when you get legends it will be great business for the community."
Other legends coming to the center include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Dillard's and Foley's.
Although the owners of Foley's and Macy's recently joined forces and many Foley's stores will eventually become Macy's, Rubenkonig said the Shops will continue to open with a Foley's.
Much of the work that will be completed in the last 100 days includes finishing out stores, striping parking spaces, and installing landscaping and signage at the Shops.
Some prominent restaurants have also signed leases at the center for as much as 8,000 square feet, including P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Kona Grill and Bravo Cucina Italiana. Six smaller eateries have signed leases to be part of a food hall to feature up to 10 restaurants.
Phase two of the Shops starts this summer with the construction of a 12-screen AMC Theater anchoring a smaller 300,000-square-foot shopping center. About 30 stores will be on the first level, with room for office space on the second, Rubenkonig said.
The Shops at La Cantera is being developed by managing general partner General Growth and investor USAA Real Estate Co. The Shops is a key component of the 1,700-acre community, which also includes the Westin La Cantera Resort, two golf courses and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
"The Shops completes the first-class destination experience of the La Cantera development," said Ed Kelley, CEO of USAA Real Estate. "From the initial planning stages onward, a regional shopping center with top-level merchants and a unique environment has always been part of our master plan for La Cantera."
The Shops is expected to create as many as 2,700 full-time jobs. The construction phase has generated about 1,500 jobs, with up to 80 percent of the subcontractors and work force from San Antonio.
The Shops will hold a job fair Aug. 9-10 on site. More information will follow soon at www.shoplacantera.com.
Nordstrom will host its own job fair July 13 away from its store to hire about 250 sales and support staff. Nordstrom spokesman John Bailey said the company will hire 40 department managers from its existing stores, maintaining its tradition of hiring from within.
The San Antonio store will be the sixth Nordstrom in Texas, with a seventh planned for NorthPark Center in Dallas.
Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus will celebrate the new stores with galas Sept. 14 and 15, respectively, to support local charities and give ticket purchasers a first glance of the stores.
