New mall lists tenants; job fairs around corner

The 100-day countdown for The Shops at La Cantera has begun as eager shoppers await the Sept. 16 opening of San Antonio's newest and most upscale mall.

The excitement encouraged owner General Growth Properties Inc. to unveil a roster of 105 tenants that have signed leases at the open-air retail village at Loop 1604 and Interstate 10.

The 105 include notable stores such as Tiffany & Co., Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Sony and Tommy Bahama.

About 15 more shops are still in the negotiating phase.

General Growth spokesman Robert E. Rubenkonig Jr. said 25 percent of the retailers are new to San Antonio, which is uncommon for projects like this.

"We are thrilled with the retailers' response, and it shows the retail community is excited about doing business in San Antonio," Rubenkonig said. "Stores like Tiffany are legends, and when you get legends it will be great business for the community."

Other legends coming to the center include Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Dillard's and Foley's.

Although the owners of Foley's and Macy's recently joined forces and many Foley's stores will eventually become Macy's, Rubenkonig said the Shops will continue to open with a Foley's.

Much of the work that will be completed in the last 100 days includes finishing out stores, striping parking spaces, and installing landscaping and signage at the Shops.

Some prominent restaurants have also signed leases at the center for as much as 8,000 square feet, including P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Kona Grill and Bravo Cucina Italiana. Six smaller eateries have signed leases to be part of a food hall to feature up to 10 restaurants.

Phase two of the Shops starts this summer with the construction of a 12-screen AMC Theater anchoring a smaller 300,000-square-foot shopping center. About 30 stores will be on the first level, with room for office space on the second, Rubenkonig said.

The Shops at La Cantera is being developed by managing general partner General Growth and investor USAA Real Estate Co. The Shops is a key component of the 1,700-acre community, which also includes the Westin La Cantera Resort, two golf courses and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

"The Shops completes the first-class destination experience of the La Cantera development," said Ed Kelley, CEO of USAA Real Estate. "From the initial planning stages onward, a regional shopping center with top-level merchants and a unique environment has always been part of our master plan for La Cantera."

The Shops is expected to create as many as 2,700 full-time jobs. The construction phase has generated about 1,500 jobs, with up to 80 percent of the subcontractors and work force from San Antonio.

The Shops will hold a job fair Aug. 9-10 on site. More information will follow soon at www.shoplacantera.com.

Nordstrom will host its own job fair July 13 away from its store to hire about 250 sales and support staff. Nordstrom spokesman John Bailey said the company will hire 40 department managers from its existing stores, maintaining its tradition of hiring from within.

The San Antonio store will be the sixth Nordstrom in Texas, with a seventh planned for NorthPark Center in Dallas.

Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus will celebrate the new stores with galas Sept. 14 and 15, respectively, to support local charities and give ticket purchasers a first glance of the stores.

The retailers and restaurants opening at The Shops at La Cantera, on Friday, September 16, 2005, along with Dillard’s, Foley’s, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, are:

I thought it was going to be off of IH-10 but then I noticed a log cabin like structure on th back side ot the Shops at La Cantera. Does anyone know when it is supposed to open?

BCBG and the Nordstrom shoe department so close together? That is dangerous ... but in such a good way. That was one of the reasons it was good to leave Houston and the house that was 10 minutes from the Galleria.

The big fight between me and the wife is who's going to watch the kids when she wants to go to Nordstrom's and I'm headed north to the new Cabela's.

The new Cabela's is almost open, 1369. I work inbetween Kyle/Buda, and I don't want to be anywhere near there for the first few months. My boss had a conversation with the paving contractor, and he said that he did a Cabella's in Nebraska in a town of like 50,000 people, and the cars were parked on the side of the road for miles radiating outward in all directions.

And the parking will only be halfway completed when it opens.

The Bass Pro Shops is on IH-10. I am not sure what you saw behind the La Cantera shops. On the east side of IH-10 a little north of 1604 you can see the construction site of the Bass pro shops. I saw it when I was driving past the other day.

sweet, la coste, Burberry, ralph lauren, and a Sony store.

I love Burberry cologne, and La Coste makes the best golf shirts, ralph lauren makes the best slacks and dress shirts.

Awesome place, cant wait for it to be done.

Will be totally open by the time I get home on the 9th or 10th of November.

    Rock on.

Bass Pro Shops is part of a completely different development just across I-10 from The Shops. bass Pro will be part of The Rim. Which will be a huge mixed-use development with a open air lifestyle center (ala The Quarry Market) anchored by Bass Pro and something else. The Rim will also be home to an indoor mall, apartments, housing, offices, townhomes, main center, library, Santikos 21 theater. And much more.

Also, a new development called Regal Hill to be built on I-10 across from Valero's HQ's is said to have IKEA as its main anchor.

My favorite part of the new Cabela's parking lot is the sign directing you to the RV/TRUCK parking.

Gotta love a store that I can PARK at...

I can't freaking wait until it opens. I'll drive the 1:15 from my house (yes I've timed it) instead of waiting several days for the UPS guy to show up with my Cabela's order!

What's the diff. between them and Bass Pro Shops.

I believe The Rim had its choice between Cabela's and Bass Pro, and they went the Bass Pro's way.
