View Full Version : How do you atheists celebrate Christmas?

To be consistent, you should not give your kids any presents, and should instead mark the occasion by eating a bowl of spaghetti (to symbolize the spaghetti monster).
When your kids cry, just tell them that their emotions are only chemical reactions in their brains.

I'll take a stab at this. When baby Jesus was born, the three kings...er wisemen...or something all brought him some kick ass stuff. To celebrate and commemerate, we all gather around the God Tree and take turns being Jesus and the Magi and give each other really cool things.

It is when, where and in what spirit, I believe Darrin was making a point about. If there is an evergreen tree in the room; if there are lights on it. If the paper is, predominantly, green and red; if there are certain seasonal songs playing in the background, then, yes, those atheists are, in fact, not just exchanging gifts, but are taking part in the celebration of the birth of Emmanuel, the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Redeemer and Savior, Jesus Christ.
If you, Chumpdumper, just happen to walk over to your parents house sometime in the next month and hand them a present, saying, "I thought you'd like this". Then you get a pass.

I like how Atheists make a big deal about the Jesus myth not having a place in their homes or schools, but allow their kids to celebrate the Santa myth only to eventually reveal to them that it's all a lie. There's probably no god but there's certainly no Santa... so I guess the least that us Conservatives can do is let the Atheists have something positive to celebrate even if it's only in their own heads. The rest of us know the truth - so let's all just stimulate the economy in the meantime!

I would think that there is an internal component to be applied to celebrating the birth of Jesus that is not a prerequisite to taking place in a celebration?

If atheists are giving gifts at Christmas -- in this over-commercialized environment that now starts before Thanksgiving -- they're participating in Christmas.
That doesn't make them Christians. In fact, it just may make them social creatures that want to be a part of a celebratory season, whatever the reason.
I don't think Black Friday or Cyber Monday were created to honor Christ but, yet, a lot of Christmas gifts are purchased that weekend. I'm not sure the Magi waited for a sale on Gold, Frankincense, or Myrrh before shelling out the guidas required to purchase them for the Christ child.
Just sayin'

Not in our current social context.
It is the Christmas season. People decorate at this time of year because it is the Christmas season. Radios change their programming, schools, government offices, and businesses close all because of Christmas. It is everywhere. Jesus's name is RIGHT there in the word: CHRISTmas. You can't miss it, no matter how naive, blind and ignorant you might be (present company begrudgingly included). The reason for the season is the birth of Jesus Christ.
If the Romans and Egyptians put a tree in during the winter, this is the first I've heard of it; so I could not have been partaking in that tradition; if that tradition evolved into the celebration that we now understand as Christmas - fine; but it's Christmas now.

Not at all. Just because one uses the religious trappings doesn't mean one is committing fully to the ceremony. Does everyone who uses money believe that we are One Nation Under God? If I say, "God damn it" am I actually wishing God to damn something?
Christmas is, by and large, secular. The religious undertones are just that for most people, undertones. And considering that the tree AND Jesus supposed birthday were both Pagan traditions, I don't think Christianity has much of a claim on those things.

I'm not sure every American will be buying presents for their family and drinking eggnog this Christmas.
For instance, most Jews and Muslims probably won't be putting presents under the tree. Nor will militant atheists who would much prefer to rail against the reason for the season...
Which, if I'm not mistaken is the fundamental point of this thread.
But, like you, I will be exchanging gifts with friends and family and will probably go through a couple of fifths of whiskey while I fatten up on spiked eggnog.
Incidentally, if I fail to judge their sentiments and accidentally gift a friend that does not share my enthusiasm for celebrating the birth of Christ, I will apologize and vow never to do it again.
Merry Christmas! God Bless us, everyone.
You are assuming I'm atheist.
I'd say you are the ignorant one today.
I did in a post make that assumption; but in most of them, I am generalizing all atheists together. I am sorry for making the assumption, but I stand by my claims regarding atheists taking part in Christmas otherwise. If you are Christian, in any of its guises, than, obviously, you would not be included.
Also, understand, it does not in the least bother me that atheists celebrate Christmas. I will attend FOUR Christmas parties hosted by atheists this year. (college town)
they, btw, readily admit they are hypocrites.

Yeah it was a Yule tree, part of the pagan celebration. Not sure what they were celebrating, winter solstice perhaps. I believe the use of "christmas" trees was banned for most of christianity's existence. Very little of christmas traditions have anything to do with the birth of Christ.

I don't think the majority of people -- Christian or not -- are participating in celebrating the birth of Christ by engaging in the commercial orgy we call Christmas.
Now, if some atheist wakes up Christmas morning -- rouses his family and start extolling on the reason for the gift exchange being to honor the birth of a Messiah in which he doesn't believe; you'll have a point.
Give it up. Christmas, as viewed by atheists, has nothing to do with Christ. Let 'em give their fucking gifts.

No shit its Christmas. The reason for the season at one point was the winter fucking solstice. I hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of people who celebrate Christmas don't do so with any regard to Jesus. Its changed. And you need only look at Black Friday to understand that.

I am not claiming otherwise. However, just like when I attended a yell practice while bleeding burnt orange 22 years ago; I wasn't celebrating or cheering the Aggies on to victory, but I WAS participating in the festivities.
Let me know when the Aggies decide to sing the Eyes of Texas at yell practice. You know, the same way Christians adopted pagan traditions. I guess when Christians adopted those traditions it was ok and it wasn't celebrating paganism but NOW if an atheist adopts a Christian tradition its participating in a CHRISTIAN celebration. Mmmmk.

The reasons I celebrate the holiday have nothing to do with religion (although I'm not an atheist) and everything to do with family. If I go to a Christmas party, it has to do with wanting to have a good time and spend time with people who's company I enjoy. Seems they're closing in on Higgs Boson's "God Particle" and may have it cornered.

Christmas is a consumer holiday. A means to exploit the buying public before the 4th quarter ends, thereby padding the balance sheets before (or during) fiscal year's end.

To be fair, there are Christians, me included, that recognize the non-Christian commercialization of Christmas for what it is and, yet, we're still able to honor the birth of our savior during that season...while still participating in the festivities.
So, I disagree, Christmas still has something to do with the birth of Christ, it's just not such a flashy or grandiose part of the season that it gets noticed much, anymore. Particularly with the expansion of the season into to a month and a half.
I still attend Christmas candlelight services at my church. I still follow the advent calendar with my children. I still read the nativity account from the Gospels. What does it matter? Modern Christmas existed as a celebration of Christ's birth before it was used as an excuse for commercial excess party.

For the record, I don't care about this stuff. I find the "War on Christmas" to be as hilariously stupid as atheists getting mad that a government official calls it a "Christmas tree".

Personally, I celebrate the 25th as the Feast of the Son of Isis, which was traditionally celebrated with raucous partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving. So basically normal Christmas, plus partying.

God was apparently insecure about how many friends would show up at his Son's party.

The church at one point said it was a sin to celebrate it.
Luckily the Church continues to change their minds.

I'm not even sure that any but the most blind Christians would say that the modern celebration of Christmas has much to do with Jesus.
Try dealing with family who get mad because your attending church services for Christmas "conflicts" with attending their entire festivities!

Also, understand, it does not in the least bother me that atheists celebrate Christmas. I will attend FOUR Christmas parties hosted by atheists this year.
I have a Jewish friend whose family puts up a tree every year! I would guess it started when the kids were little and really did not understand why everyone else had a tree. Given that a tree is not a uniquely Christian symbol, I say have at it!

I miss a day and don't have time to read this huge thread.
I will say however from what little I read, it dosn't matter if one believes or not. It doesn't matter that Christmas was not a Christian holiday, but the Christians of the past stole Christmas.
What matters is that Christmas has become an American tradition. It should just be that simple.

To be consistent, you should not give your kids any presents, and should instead mark the occasion by eating a bowl of spaghetti (to symbolize the spaghetti monster).
When your kids cry, just tell them that their emotions are only chemical reactions in their brains.
