I sometimes get the feeling that maybe in 10 years with Manu already retired for a while he will score 20 on an exhibition game and this thread will come up again as it did all this years.

An everlasting memory of a poster´s stupidity.

NameLess Scrub
03-31-2016, 11:35 AM
Imo the question has been valid for a couple of years, as he has been playing ~20min/night and getting older.

It's nobody's fault he takes some Manu Energy drink and scores 20 in less than 15 mins.
As somebody posted, he did something nobody had done in 30 years.

At the end of the day, it's a nice thread to celebrate every time he does stuff like this.

seen how guys from his age group ( Pierce/Kobe/KG .) either retired or completely washed up, you gotta appreciate Manu greateness...As stacked as the Spurs are, they need him to be a top 5 team performer in playoff to have a chance at a ring..

Heh. It's a ST classic. I had a feeling if Manu didn't get it in the first half, he'd never get the chance. Could have had his 20 easy tonight.

For the record, all the good Spurs teams of the past had multiple guys coming off the bench who could put up 18-20 on any given night. Spurs have that again this year. Manu is still Manu... at times.

In light of the fact that this may be Manu's last game ever as a Spur, I figure it's as good a time as any to say this.

The truth is I'm probably one of the biggest Manu Ginobili fans on this forum and I always have been. I made this topic 5+ years ago as a facetious troll topic and it's been fun keeping up the charade for all that time, but for all of the vitriol I've ever said about Manu Ginoibili 100% of it was fabricated.

I started watching the Spurs (and indeed the NBA) back in 2001. I remember the first time I ever saw Manu Ginoibli in a game I knew he'd be a special player - a rare breed that comes along once every generation. Although he's never had the stamina to put up superstar level totals, he's been a perennial example of what I'd call a "PER superstar," particularly during his heyday back in the mid to late 2000s. I remember obsessing over advanced stats during that time largely because they were one of the few metrics that objectified Ginobili's greatness on the court. It's difficult for non-Spurs fans to appreciate what he does because all they see (during his prime) is 18 PPG, but total points scored has always belied his true impact to the game and to the Spurs franchise.

It's been the highest privilege and an absolute honor watching him all of these years, and I'll probably shed a tear or two when tonight's game is said and done if this is indeed his last game. He didn't score 20 tonight but he mustered a 20+ point game last night against arguably one of the best teams in recent history and really it just kind of puts a cherry on top of a remarkable career.

The only person on these forums who knows about this secret of mine is probably the actual biggest Manu fan, our very own ElNono

No disrespect to TD, but Manu is the greatest competitor the Spurs have ever had. And probably top 5 in all time NBA.

He's up there with Jordan.

Did you see the stat that in 14pt wins, Manu is the only 40yr old to be the leading scorer of the winning team with a net-negative rating?

Also, you said 20 points, not 20+ points. So technically your streak is still alive.

Does anyone know for sure who Stephen Jackson was referring to when he said he's better than some guys on the team before he was cut? I keep hearing Danny Green, but at the time, I thought I also heard people mention he Manu too. If so, I thought this is a good time to bring that back. Stephen could barely score two points in his last season with the Spurs at age what? Manu is still playing well at age 40, certainly better that Jackson did at whatever age he was in his last year with the Spurs and stint he had with the Clippers.

Mostly Danny. Maybe a little jealous of Kawhi, too. He and Manu were actually pretty good friends.

He didn't want to be the 4th wheel in the swingman rotation and the Spurs had gotten away from smallball by that point as Tiago and Diaw were just too good to keep off the court. That didn't leave more than around 15 minutes worth of PT for Jackson per game.

He talked about this on True Hoop about a year ago. He said he was approached by Pop and said that he wanted him to tell the other wings that they were better than him. He refused and was cut. He mentioned that Pop knew that he was going to say no and that TMac was on a plane the next day.

He specifically called out Manu who ,to be fair, was playing the worst ball of his career. He had a month where he was averaging something like 3-3.5 turnovers in 24 mpg. That's when Turnobili got coined and then there was the last two games of the 2013 Finals...

To be fair to Captain, he admitted that he was having a bad season. I don't recall him having anything negative to say about Kawhi though. On Pops end, he was likely going to end up benching him and knew Jax well enough to know that that wouldn't go over well so Pop used reverse psychology. Kawhi, Green, Manu and Neal ended up getting increased minutes; in the playoffs, that year, after Jackson got cut and it was a big reason why we almost went all the way.

IMO I'd have to say no tbh. He's been riddled with injuries this season, and he couldn't even get close to scoring 20 for the few games that he came back for (until...surprise surprise!...another injury).

I think it's pretty obvious that he's going to retire after next season when his contract is up. The 3 year/$40 million contract was a lifetime achievement award contract, after all. There's no way the Spurs F.O. will give him 2 lifetime achievement award contracts, and no other team in the league wants a TOSB. He's not a pure shooter like Steve Nash, and his passing abilities will be rendered useless once the league figures out that Manu's no longer a scoring threat, so he doesn't really have any skills that will allow him to stay in the league beyond the age of 35.

He can't explode at the rim with his "toothpick" ankles (lest he wants another stress fracture). His shot is pretty much gone after his hand surgery (you can tell by the way his free throws clanked off the rim to the left and right). If he plays any more than 15 minutes a game, he'll be too tired to make a 3 point shot, so that's pretty much gone. By Manu's own admission, this is without question Tony Parker's team now, so even if you disagreed with everything so far, Manu won't be taking 15-20 shots per game because he's no longer the first option (or second option...or third option IMO).

Taking into account the fact that Manu will most likely have another season ending injury next year, and taking into account the fact that it takes him 3 or 4 months to warm up and get in a good rhythm (which he doesn't have this season), I think it's a safe bet to say he'll never score 20 again.
