I'm interested to see what the everyday line-up will be. Their offense is so good, it's not like they have to do much to change it. But when you have Cruz and Napoli hitting 6th and 7th, you have to at least consider moving them up a spot each based on what they did last year. Still very right handed dominant. Anyway to mix in another lefty bat somewhere in the top 6-7 besides Hamilton? Where does Michael Young hit? I think I'd rather see him hitting 2nd than clean-up and then just move Andrus towards the bottom of the order. Just a couple things to consider.

IMO...
1. Andrus
2. Young
3. Hamilton
4. Beltre
5. Napoli
6. Cruz
7. Kinsler
8. Moreland
9. Murphy/Gentry/Torrealba
Only way I don't mind Kinsler leading off again is if he quits swinging for the stands every time at the plate. Dude has ability to get on base at a high rate as he can be a very good contact hitter, has very good speed, and is very good as drawing walks... but ruins it when he pops out every other AB because he's trying too hard to blast homers. If he is going to continue swinging for the stands, he needs to be put back in the order, so he can look to bat people in. The Rangers definitely missed out on quite a few runs this past season that they could have had if Kinsler just focused on getting on base. That could be the difference between 3-4 wins and losses, which may prove to be very significant this year as the Angels are not going to be easy at all.
Goodness, sometimes I forget how good their lineup actually is though... 1-7 are all studs, and Moreland is capable of playing at a high level too (supposedly he played with a fractured bone in his hand which explains his unusually bad streak late in the season last year, after starting so well). Even Murphy and Torrealba are no slouches either, and would definitely be higher in the order on a lot of other teams in the league.
If Feliz and/or Darvish have a good year, there is no reason this team isn't back in the World Series. I expect Holland to improve, Harrison should be solid again, and Colby can't possibly be worse than he was last year. Also now with a healthy Feldman and Ogando back in the bullpen (and no Oliver), the bullpen should be very strong as they have two previous starters who can relieve for extended innings, and Adams is a good shutdown guy for the 8th. The starters will only really NEED to pitch 5-6 innings a game with the depth in the bullpen. Hopefully Nathan can have a nice year, as he is the only real question in the bullpen IMO.

With Kinsler, it cuts both ways. If he didn't swing for the fences so much, then he'd probably be just a 15-20 HR guy and that decrease in run production may cost the Rangers 3-4 wins. Just the other way of looking at it. The fact he still takes his walks and had a pretty good OBP tells me he doesn't have to move out of the leadoff spot.
The Rangers should be fine this year, but it's not like there aren't other very good AL teams. The reasons why they aren't guaranteed to be back in the World Series include the Angels, the Yankees, the Tigers, the Red Sox, and the Rays. I wouldn't be surprised if they made it back, but other good teams will have something to say about it.

This, but I'm swapping Cruz and Nap. Wouldn't be surprised to see Kinsler and Moreland get moved around a LOT. Also Young will be all over the place considering he's a bona fide utility infielder.
Swap Cruz and Beltre, stretch, otherwise I agree with every fucking word you posted brother!

Well, personally, I would rather him leave the leadoff spot completely, and continue swinging that way. He opened a lot of games with solo shots, which is cool, but even cooler when he belts in homers with guys on base. If he keeps swinging hard, but later in the lineup after some people who get on base frequently, he could have the same number of HRs but an extra 10-20 RBIs.

03-02-2012, 03:52 PM
and I think Cruz, Beltre, and Napoli are all interchangable for the 4-6 spots. I wouldn't have a problem with any order of those 3 guys. But I think Beltre's speed being followed with Cruz and Napoli could potentially result in a couple more RBIs for those guys, as opposed to the other way around.

Perhaps, but I think you may also be looking at things too narrowly. The situation you're specifically talking about only happens to lead off the game and when Kinsler leads off another inning, which during the course of the game can still happen to any hitter in the order, leadoff or not. But the Rangers have such length to their line-up, Kinsler still gets a shitload of RBI opportunities. The Rangers 7-8-9 hitters rank 2nd, 3rd, and 7th in the AL in OBP at those spots in the order. In fact, the only other teams that had about as good of depth and quality collectively at the bottom of the order last season were Kansas City and Boston.
I tried to find a good comparison to another player hitting down in the line-up in a great offense with a similar number of plate appearances. And this might be a good one, Robinson Cano. Cano hit mostly 4-5 in a very potent Yankees line-up and had a roughly similar amount of ABs/PAs as Kinsler, who hit mostly leadoff (some 3rd).
Kinsler: 620 ABs, 723 PAs
Cano: 623 ABs, 681 PAs
Similar number of at-bats and plate appearances. Now look at their PAs with opportunities to produce runs.
Kinsler: 284 PAs with runners on, 169 PAs with RISP
Cano: 310 PAs with runners on, 177 PA with RISP
Considering Kinsler led off for most of the season so that takes away around 150 PAs where he automatically won't have runners on or RISP, those numbers are pretty close. Even as a leadoff hitter, Kinsler got a shitload of RBI opportunities. He had more than Ellsbury. A lot of that has to do with the length/depth of the Rangers line-up and the ability of the bottom of the order to get on base and turn the line-up over. Moving him down may get him some more opportunities, but significantly more? I'm not convinced. Even at leadoff, he's getting a similar amount of RBI opportunities as a lot of middle of the order guys on other teams.

I think an ill wind is blowing this season.
After two straight heartbreakers in the World Series, a shitstorm of distractions, and expectations higher than ever, I think the Rangers slip a little bit.
I don't think we'll get anywhere near the same production from Napoli or Beltre. Hamilton will miss his standard 30-60 games. Same with Kinsler. I can see Michael Young's production taking a dive.
Even still, the team will live or die by it's pitching. Colby will be steady, but with all the other youngsters, who knows how things will go for them. I fully expect Darvish, Holland, and Feliz to be a dynamite trio of starters for the future, but maybe not this season.
The Rangers future is still brighter than any other team in the majors, but I just don't see them mounting a third World Series try this year. I predict a 89-73 record, losing the division to the Angels, and losing out to Boston for the WC spot. This core group will get back to the World Series at least one more time imho, but not this season.
btw I've got the Phillies beating the Tigers in the World Series this year, not that anybody gives a shit.

still they have no talent at 1st base which will make em pay. niggas conceded too many Hs last year which could've been prevented if the 1st baser played better. it looks to me the rangers are like a ferrari w/o tires which ain't going nowhere, one weakness that is gonna encumber them forever tbh.

If we don't get something better at first, we're going to have issues. Unless the FO knows something about Moreland that we don't know, I see a lot of errors on that side of the infield. :( Really wish we could have pulled something off for Prince.

There's two wild card opportunities this year. I fully expect the Rangers to get to the Playoffs, and I honestly think we'll have a shot to get back to the Classic. I think we're still better than the Angels overall...I don't think them adding CJ and Pujols puts them over us. I could be wrong, but that's my opinion.
I was actually gonna agree with mono, that the Rangers were probably gonna be the last team out, but with the new rule I think they'll be the last ones in.
It's hard to look at this division and not see the Angels winning it without being a homer. They are just ridiculously stacked and IMO will get the best overall record in baseball.
My predictions for the American League
AL West
1. Angels
2. Rangers (wild card)
AL Central
1. Tigers (by a shit ton of games)
2. who cares
AL East
1. Yankees (still have one more year in them
2. Red Sox (wild card)
3. Blue Jays (barely missing out)

btw, I had no idea they were making changes to the outfield until I saw it at the game. I guess maybe it had something to do with the LaRussa WS fiasco with the bullpen? Because the opponent BP is parallel to the field now like ours. And they took bleachers out to do it. Same with right-center.
So what's the magic number as of tonight?

Dice-K was very, very good in his first MLB start. 7 IP, 10 K, 1 BB, 6 H out-dueling Zack Greinke. Dice-K was pretty strong his first 2 seasons in Boston. Perhaps not worth the contract, but I wouldn't say he was a bust. I think injuries played a part after those 2 first seasons.

For a minute there when Feldman starting warming up in the 1st inning, I thought Darvish was going to get yanked at that point. I think he came really really close to that happening. Maybe one more hit away. But luckily he got through it and went a few more innings.
I think his confidence may have taken a hit had he not gotten three outs. Credit to Wash for letting him wiggle his way out of it. Because he looked more relaxed after that.

Yeah. A little shaky start but I'm glad Wash let him take his lumps. He came out of it looking pretty good. Not great but its his first game. Man, were there lotsssss of Japanese people in the crowd. I say that ignorantly because I don't know if all Asians would be there to support Yu. Of course, Darvish's jersey was the most prominant in the crowd. A great day to see a great ball game.
Did a foul ball hit a person in the stands in the 1st or 2nd inning by first base? The ball looked like it was headed towards our section but it didn't have the speed. It went into the crowd a few sections over and it bounced right back on to the field. A lot of people were standing up looking at that area for a while after. Just wondering if it launched off someone's head or something.

btw watching Young play 3rd base is not pretty. If you ever wanted to see exactly why the Rangers went so hard after Beltre, you could just watch today's game. Rangers win 6-0 with Beltre at 3rd today. First run the Twins got was an error by Young. The 2nd one wasn't an error, but it showed just how little range Young has. Beltre gets that ball easily and makes the out at first. That inning becomes 1-2-3 instead of a run being scored and the bases getting loaded. And Darvish probably starts the 7th inning. Young's bat is great, but please keep him as DH.

God no he hasn't. He still has a LOT of work to do on his command. But a good outing for the amount of pitches he threw, and considering the fact that they get about 6 days off in Japan. They'll mold him well. We know how good Texas is with pitchers.

If they were to somehow stay fully healthy, then MAYYYYYYYYYYYBE they could get fortunate and challenge it. Considering all the injuries they faced last year, and still won 96 is something to definitely feel good over.
But chances of them having such minimal injuries? Slim to none when you have guys like Hamilton, Kinsler, Cruz, and Beltre as 4 of your top 5 players, who all seem injury prone.
100 wins definitely is more than possible though.

in terms of talent and having a stacked roster with minimal holes, this team is as complete and talented of a team as you will see. about the only "holes" this team has is lack of experience in a few players (and maybe Joe Nathan but its too early to say that), but i think they are very minor holes that are quite easy to overcome. They still have a loaded lineup that doesn't have a single easy out (and 3 hitters who would likely be #1 hitters on quite a few teams in the MLB, between Hamilton, Napoli, and Beltre, and even an argument for Kinsler and Cruz on some teams), and they have 3 playoff and WS tested starting pitchers as well as a loaded bullpen.
There really isn't much to NOT like about this team, in terms of how much success they should have.
Honestly IMO, barring injuries, there is no reason they shouldn't win the World Series this year. Anything less, is a MASSIVE disappointment. It was a massive disappointment that they lost last year, and they are definitely a superior team this year with the added experience (particularly in the pitching staff).

Really good series for the Rangers. Congrats.
I was all pumped up to see Neftali v. Verlander. Then Friday night's rain out came and I found out they got pushed to the night game. I was so pissed. And on top of that, the day game we did end up going to, we see Porcello completely shit his pants in the first inning as I witnessed the longest half inning of major league baseball I have ever seen. Almost felt like watching a little league game of hit after hit on some poor little 9 year old. It was awful lol.
Would have been something if the Tigers could have pulled out the next two. Verlander did enough. And I thought our rookie lefty Drew Smyly gave the team a really good chance as well. Just not enough I guess. Anyway, I didn't watch those two games anyway. After the Saturday afternoon game, I got shitfaced and stayed downtown and caused some trouble and had to recover all day yesterday.
Anyway, good series for the Rangers. Definitely the team to beat in the AL. You guys need to get a few injuries over the course of the season so some of the other AL teams can catch up and make a bid for the top spot. I'm sure Josh will oblige me at some point.

Except for a couple of outings, your starters did well. The problem was, and it's going to be a problem for a lot of teams, is the Rangers bullpen. They have one of the best, if not THE best bullpen in the AL.

Getting the last two games would have made the series totally fine for the Tigers. It hurts that our rookie lefty Smyly really pitched well against the Rangers and their right handed power bats, so it was unfortunate to lose that later in the game. But the other thing was the Tigers offense really didn't help out the pitchers much at all either. Tigers needed to put some more pressure on Colby that game.
The first game with the minor league lefty was to be expected. And I didn't know what to expect from Smyly. But the game that really hurt was the Porcello start where he had that 8 run first inning. Keep it to even 4-5 runs and maybe that gives the offense a remotely realistic chance to battle back. 9 runs in the first two innings is just too big a hole on most occasions. And Duane Below battled to at least keep the game right there for like 5-6 innings or however many he threw. Makes you wonder if Leyland actually pulled the plug in the first inning whether it could have made a difference.
Rangers pitching is very good. I still think the Tigers offense needed to do more.

tbh I think the Tigers are still the 2nd best team in the AL (I guess it still depends on how this series vs the Yankees goes). They just didn't bring the intensity needed the 1st two games + Josh Hamilton playing out of this world for now doesn't make it any easier.
The last two games I saw the usual Tigers who always give the Rangers a headache

True..either way though..it's in my sig..lol
Yu has watermelon balls right now, he's at his best when he's let guys on base and absolutely must get outs to avoid getting screwed. Great quality to have in a pitcher. I suspect things will change once teams get used to facing him but his stuff has looked good lately and I definitely didn't expect him to be this good this early. Safe to say at this point that debacle of a start in his first game can be chalked up to nerves about playing in the majors?
Viva Las Espuelas
04-25-2012, 10:06 AM
Yeah. Yu was awesome last night. He made me a believer yesterday. Loved the way he got out of that mess he made. He sealed it for me when he did. You can see his swagger now. He didn't have that the first or second game. I thought he was really gonna throw some heat in the 7th when that fastball was clocked at 96. He's never gone that high. I'm ready for some 100s. And it was good to have Beltre back. Good season so far.

Didn't get to watch the game because I was stuck somewhere without cable (and I don't have my contacts right now due to dipshit optometrists so I couldn't have watched it anyway) but how was this dude not getting intentionally walked after hitting two HRs? Still awesome to see this happen to Josh, maybe with my checkered past in the drug underworld, I have a shot at being a MLB star too?

Because somebody was already on base and the Rangers are loaded. If you walk Josh, now you have two on with another really good hitter coming up

Pretty much, the Angels team last year was a few bad hops from making the playoffs, also shitting their pants every time they played a divisional rival. Most of us thought Pujols and Wilson were going to win them the division this year.
