So I was laid off on 1 February.
I now have 2, potentially 3, job offers on the table.
1 Job pays the most, but is only a contract job, likely to end in about three years with no guarantee of a continuation or placement. Good thing about this job is it would be a great entry on my resume and give me good experience going forward to couple with my education, potentially leading to better opportunities elsewhere.
2cd job pays about 5K less, but is a permanent placement. It is with a big organization with a lot of internal promotion potential. It is somewhere I could likely make a career.
3rd job pays about 10k less, but is a permanent placement. It is with a mid sized org. Very laid back, family type atmosphere. lots of nice creature comfort type perks. Potential to be in on the ground floor and potential director of a new department, if the department catches on.
I have already accepted job one, but am kind of regretting it and thinking of retracting for job two. Job three just came about today and I think it is very likely they make an offer by the end of the week.
ARggh....i need a therapist. Do you take less money for other comforts, or do you always take the most $$?

how can anyone answer this for you not knowing anything else about you, your family, your lifestyle, your character, etc.?
and lol if this is a serious thread and you are really asking advice from a group of people that spend their time pretending to be black or upset about

I'd probably talk to job #3 and tell them I'm really tempted but can't afford to leave 10K on the table and see what they do. They might at least match the pay on job #2.
RIP CITY.

I know, and its why I rarely post here any more...but there are a few random people that do actually have sound advice and are fairly smart about stuff like this...
You just have to sift through most of the BS.

I have basically done this, but you would be surprised about how crazy guarded places are about their salary.
Any time i even bring it up, everything gets awkward...its like a guessing game type thing.

If by "contract job" you're referring to an arrangement where you're not officially an employee of the company you're doing work for, then as far as the IRS is concerned you're self employed and have to pay self employment taxes. If that's the case, there goes a good chunk of your extra income right there.
As for whether or not it's worth it to give up $5k or $10k for other comforts? It can be. Of course whether you're talking about a giving up $5k or $10k from a $40k job or $5k or $10k from a $80k job will factor heavily into that decision.

Job 1 is 62k working as an employee of a company that is under contract, but that is a good point. No I wouldnt be the actual contractor, my employer is.
Job 2 is 57k
Job 3 hasn't made an offer yet, but i have a feeling it is going to be between 48 and 52...

I would need to know your age and the relative prospects at the 3 different organizations. Are these companies stable? Are they growing? Are they in high-risk industries? What kind of work do you do?
If you're young and single then perhaps job #1 is the best as it builds your resume. If you have a wife and family you might want something more secure.

Do these numbers include insurance costs, or is that not an issue?

Early in my career I was pretty much all about the money and the resume. While money and resume are still important, the comfort factor has grown as I've grown older.

Good point.
The first job, insurance premiums are ridiculous...640 a month to cover myself and family. Employee is free if you just insure yourself. We would likely just cover me with their plan (free) and my wife would use her plan for herself and our son. They have half of first 6% 401k matching...10hrs of PTO a month accrued...
Second is very very cheap premiums (they are affiliated with a hospital network) so its 150 a month premiums for myself and family. Cheap copays, etc...they have a pension plan vs. a 401k which you put 2% in, then offer some sort of 457 plan, or something like that in which you can contribute any ammount to.
Third has a typical plan, 300ish a month, 30 dollar copays, etc...good 401k match, 10hrs of leave a month..etc...

I had a choice to make like this last year. I choose option 3. It was the flexible, permanent, laid back, lowest earning of the 3. So far so good. Sometimes I feel like I don't even work...the people are awesome. Most people would pick option 1 with the higher pay...totally understandable.
Choose...choose wisely.
3 years is plenty of time. You can look for more permanent status during that time. Like Clambake said, all jobs are temporary, they just don't tell you that in the interview.
Take the money unless you cannot stomach the job (cantthinkofanything, here's your opening for a cheesy ass dick joke).
5K less a year is nothing at 100K, but at 35K it's significant. So talk in percentages if you aren't going to give all the numbers.
Some perks are worth a lot, like a company car for example.
How much do you need for your standard of living and how much better would your life be with the perks vs the extra money?

Doubtful, but maybe. Doesn't sound like something I would do, but then again...i an be a dumbass sometimes.
Only thing braggable about my last job is I made decent money, worked from home, and basically barely worked at all...It was one of the cushiest jobs I have ever had, and probably will ever have. It was obvious it couldn't last though, and they cut the funding this year...I was kind of expecting it.
