I know there has been a lot of hate for him being out of shape etc., but I don't think that will be the case for too long here. I think he's the sort of player that only plays to his fullest when he likes the team he's on. As bad as that may be, he clearly wants to be on the Spurs. + for us.

After they call Richard Simmons to fix Diaw's weight problem, Bonner better get real comfortable on the bench.

hhaha, that's what I'm hoping. I'd much rather see this cut into Bonner's playing time than Blair's. Although I think we all know Blair is the one who's minutes are going to go. :depressed

I'm fine with the move as long as he replaces Blair in the rotation and not Splitter. Not sure I trust Pop to do that.

I also think with Jackson on board Pop will go smallball quite a bit so neither Bonner nor Diaw is out there. The only teams we need size to beat is Memphis and the Lakers, maybe the Mavs at times.

It'll be interesting to see how he fits.

I think once he learns our system he will be a GREAT fit offensively. Top notch passer for his position, great feel for the game, unselfish (sometimes to a fault) and able to stretch the floor somewhat from the 4 spot.

Not sure how much if at all he can help us defensively though...

Great pick up nonetheless :toast The final third of the regular season really is shaping up to be some exciting stuff. Can't wait to see how our three recent pick ups gel with the rest of the squad.

It took a few years, but Tony finally gets his own Frenchy as a teammate. After all, Manu has already had his. It's high time that TP has gotten his.

I'm trying to decide how to celebrate this signing. Either with a Whataburger Thick-N-Hearty Burger or with a French pastry?

Seriously though, I'm glad that the Spurs have the semi-warm body of Diaw, but his passiveness and chronic laziness still scare me nonetheless.

A couple of questions for those more familiar with Diaw:

What are the realistic expectations for Diaw for the remainder?
Does anyone think TP can motivate this guy and keep in line?
Does anyone think this will be more than a 1/2 season rental?

WeNeedLength
03-23-2012, 01:46 PM
:tu. I hope he's not fat and can get some minutes tonight since the front court is slim pickins. He's a smart player so his only problem is motivation and coming to the Spurs should be just the right thing he needs.

Does anyone think this will be more than a 1/2 season rental?

I'd like to see Diaw play 18-22 minutes and average 8 ppg and around 3-4 assists.

Yes, I think Diaw is thrilled to have a chance to win a championship with his buddy. Who wouldn't?

It depends on how well he plays and how far we get through the playoffs. A first or second round exit and I don't think he stays. But if he works his ass off and we make a strong push for the crown, then I say yes!

He's 33years old not 23 like in '03...Jefferson wasn't motivated to be on the Spurs anymore anyway and still managed to avg at least dbl digit pts..Jackson will avg the same and will hit the eventual 3 ball just like RJ did. There really is no progression with that trade..only a fool/fool's would think so. And like someone else said..Diaw got BOUGHT OUT by the BOBCATS.morons

Solid pick up in Diaw. Low risk high reward....gotta love the possibilities this team now has. I see some very challenging lineups for other teams to adjust to. Pop excels with these kind of lineup choices down the stretch of close games. I look forward to seeing this actualize in some quality playoff wins this year. Now, let's get and stay healthy.

Ah...your average statboy. Do you not know what Jack brings to this team besides numbers? Ask the big 3. Fire...intensity...leadership. One of the best teammates in the league. The guy has more heart and intensity in an eyelash than RJ had in his body. I see you don't have a lot of posts...you should probably stay that way.

I am not saying that Jefferson is better than Jackson, i'm saying they are both past their prime and are role players now. 10pts is 10pts no matter how u slice it. Unless Jackson is now 6'10 then this team would have still been in same position if Jefferson were still a spur. Yea the trade did not make us worse, but teams aren't exactly game planning against Jackson either

Ending the game with any combination of the following:

I would take that lineup over any in the league except maybe Miami

Diaw just tweeted this article:

Baxter! You know I don't speak French!

I have the google translation of it, but wanted someone to give a proper translation:

Can you tell us summarize the situation of recent days, from Charlotte to San Antonio?

Once the contract binding me to Charlotte ended, I knew I had 48 hours to decide on the team for which I was going to sign.

I had several options but these are the San Antonio Spurs that I remember.

Why did you choose this team? What were the determining factors?

Firstly the professionalism of the club and the quality of play produced by the team. I had to choose an organization in which I would be able to adapt as quickly as possible. And as I think the Spurs style of play suits me, so I signed with them.

What is your goal with this team? What do you bring?

My goal is to help the team go as far as possible this season. I go by my versatility, try to bring in all areas of the game I want to be a "facilitator" for this team.

A quick note to your team that plays for 5 min?

On JSA Bordeaux Basket, I'm about to just watch their game against Nantes in play by play on the internet but also on our facebook.

Let's go to Bordeaux and soon!!

Can you sum up what happens in the previous days?

Once I was bough out by Charlotte, I know I have 48hours to pick a team. I had few options but I chose Spurs.

Why Spurs?

They are a true professional team and they play a quality basketball. i had to pick a team where I could fit as quickly as possible. Since I think Spurs' style fit me well, I've signed with them.

What is your goal with this team? What will you bring to them?

My goal is to help Spurs to go as far as possible this season. I will, thanks to my versatility, try to help in every aspect of the game. I want to be a "facilitator".

Exactly. The only way this Diaw acquisition helps is if it allows Tiago to play more which will improve our defense. If Tiago's minutes get cut it backfires. Hopefully Diaw can mean less Bonner/Blair and more TD/TS.

Some random Diaw thoughts:

-Congrats to Bruno for the signing of Diaw. He was pimping Diaw before he blew up with the Suns (figuratively not literally) while I may or may not have said he sucked :)

-Even if Diaw is great the rest of the way, do you give him a long-term contract? I'd hesitate because of the cap room the Spurs can open and I'm not sure that I trust him to stay in shape. He sure didn't last time.

-Diaw kinda reminds me of Horry because they are both former perimeter players who eventually moved to power forward. Horry was a point forward in college and even got compared to Magic Johnson at times. Diaw was a giant point guard in Europe.

-I'm really interested to see if Pop will be able to live with Diaw passing up open shots. It's going to happen because Diaw has always done that. Pop has always hated it. It's going to be interesting to see who wins that battle of wills.

-Warning to Spurs fans: You will probably hate Diaw at first. He's definitely an acquired taste as a basketball player. His best traits are his passing and smarts ... and that takes a while to shine through.

I'm not convinced of the fit but I'm excited to see if it will work :hungry:

When you look at the rotations, Pop starts Blair but sometimes he will sit the rest of the half, or get minimal minutes after coming out.

I applaud the Spurs FO for continuing to tweak the roster, so I'm not going to pooh-pooh Diaw - yet. However, I'm not convinced about him, for all the reasons others have stated. Dude passes up open shots, penchant for laziness and has never kept himself in shape.

Another 6'8" guy on the roster? Pop is set to play small-ball as long as he wants.

I know Diaw was all that was available to the Spurs, but I don't see how he helps in a tough, physical playoff matchup versus a team like, say the Grizzlies or Fakers.

The concern is that tihs roster is still devoid of an athletic big man. I guess we'll have to wait until free agency.

Diaw has the Olympics coming up, has a contract to play for, playing with his best friend...that's a lot to motivate the guy. Bucks have been our Trojan horse to the rest of the league this deadline, keeping Jackson and Diaw under wraps so we could get them for chump change. imo both these guys still have a lot of juice left, and will make some big contributions on what should be a long playoff run.

I agree ideally you'd want a bigger player with better defense. But there are positives. Diaw is an excellent passer and is able to create offense for himself and others. He has a post game and long arms which allows him to play bigger than 6'8. He can run point center. I think it would be nice to use him as a point center for the second unit and allow Splitter to start for better defense.

Last time we said that was in '09 when RC got RJ and Dice and somewhat in '10 when he got Splitter. Pop's got plenty of good cards. Let's see how he plays them. For one will he be able to overcome his Bonner love to put the best players on the floor?

A few were wondering what number he might wear. I suspect he wears 33.

I definitely wouldn't give him a long term contract, but I'd strongly consider bringing him back. Because this is a contending team and because his best friend is on the team, I'm not concerned about him being motivated, not just now, while he's playing for a contract, but even if he were to be re-signed. I just wouldn't want to potentially take them out of the running for a significant player in '13. He's not good enough that you take away that opportunity.

What they can and probably will look to do, because he more than likely will want to stay and because he probably will be a good fit, is re-sign him to a 1 year contract. They can tell him that they want to keep their options open beyond that, but if he has a strong season and re-builds his value, that they'll strongly consider signing him long term.

With limited flexibility and trade assets Spurs brought in Jack, Patty Mills and Diaw. This would be hailed as a winning off season, what more in season?

I think Diaw will fit in fairly well because of his team first mentality. His passing on the offensive end will allow different looks, sticking him in a lineup of Duncan, TP, Manu, Jack will be versatile on both sides of the ball.

1st: Parker, Green, Leonard, Duncan, Blair

2nd: Neal, Manu, Jackson, Diaw, Splitter

Spurs won't have Bird rights on Diaw and would have to sign him using an exception or cap space, if they have any. Assuming that TD comes back for 10M+, then the Spurs will either have the MLE or a chunk of cap space slightly larger than the MLE. If they pursue Lorbek, it's doubtful that they could offer Diaw enough to keep him.

I don't think he stays beyond this season, but there are worse things than having a talented player on a cheap, short-term deal who is trying to rehabilitate his market value.

We all know Pop is starting Blair so he won't sulk on the bench and implode so he's just doing it for depth. With Diaw here, hopefully that means Blair goes back to the bench and gets traded or something next year. Pop usually sees how Blair is doing in the first 10 minutes of the game and might not even play again until the second half. But with Bonner out and Splitter hurting, it's the sad truth that Blair will continue to start.

I don't think Diaw should get the starting spot right away, yet it shouldn't take him more than a few games to get that spot; Blair's style is too out of control for the playoffs.

Minutes in the playoffs should be this:
Duncan 35-37 MPG
Diaw 20-25 MPG
Splitter 25-30 MPG
Bonner 8-12MPG

Unfortunately, knowing Pop, they'll likely be this:
Duncan 35-37MPG
Diaw 20-25MPG
Bonner 18-22MPG
Splitter 15-18MPG

Pipe dream signings for the Spurs with SJax, Mills and Diaw!

Spurs fans will love his high Bball IQ, I still question his lack of selfishness and hope he can get in shape quickly because he was so fat at one point.

But playing for a crappy team such as the Bobacts and eating like crazy in South West of France (food notorious known to be rich, that's where they produce Foie Gras) in Bordeaux during the lockout surely didn't help.

I think playing with one of your best friends and one of the best organization in Sports history help to get motivated. I think we can hopefully trust his IQ to make the right decision and get fit quickly!

He's been outrageously overweight for a few years now, I'm quite concerned.

TP, who is known to be straight forwarded, kept insisting that Diaw is in shape but he may be protecting his buddy and bluffing (amateur of poker) to encourage the Spurs organization to sign him.

There were questions that TP may not have been his usual self when Manu was out of the playoffs and played crappy. Hopefully, adding Diaw to the team will make hom more than ready and motivated for the playoffs this year!

The only reason Blair is playing so far is that our frontcourt is really limited! You obviously can't overplay Duncan to preserve his minutes and Splitter has been injured here and there.

He was benched during the rest of the series for the Grizzlies and is playing beginning of halves most of the time.

Hopefully, more Diaw and SJax (smallball, I like it for once because he brings swag and defense) = less Blair
