View Full Version : I like D. Green a lot but 19 FGAs... really ?

I'm a fan of Dany Green, tonite 6 reb 6 assists 1 blk 1 stl 36 mn. He is having a very solid year and Pop seems to trust him a lot. He just need to be a bit more selective with his shooting, with all the offensive weapons the Spurs have 19 FGAs is way too much for him.
I hope he will clean that soon

yea somebody needs to pull him aside

The 0-5 from three land killed his stats.
That attempt number would have fallen if Tiago and Tony were on the court tonight. I don't mind the aggressiveness with those two out tbh

But what if Pop told him to go out there an be aggressive.
He was everywhere. Dont know who was guarding him, but he was open sooo many times. Without Tony`s 20 shots, somebody must take them. Today it was Green

its only a problem if the spurs lose tbh
I'm fine with it. He usually shoots better. He is the guy the other team always leaves open so he has to shoot those. Plus, when he plays D that way, I don't mind him taking those shots. All IMHO

He played great most of the game it was just in a five minute span that he went crazy. I like that Pop pulled him and instead of going crazy on him sat him down and talked to him.

I like green to but with Jackson signed now, Jackson should be playin an takin shots before Green gets the green light! Imho

Agreed. But 3 of those missed 3's were wide open. Just have to crack the code in the long-range.

manu played 28 mn and took 11 and Jax 22 mn and took 7... it's not like we have nobody to take some shots. I have no issue with him taking a bunch but 19 ?? On top of that a big part of these shots were not quality shots.
Oh and somebody needs to teach him how to run the clock, no need to take a shot within 5 sec when you have 10 pts with 3 mn to go.

Not concerned unless it becomes a habit. I don't see Pop letting that happen though.

Yeah, he didn't have his shooting touch tonight but kept letting it fly ... I suppose Pop doesn't want him to pass up the open shot when he's in, but he also had a couple of ill advised plays when he was trying to run the pick and roll. Love the energy but he needs to keep working on his game.

Yeah I really wish he would have the spread the ball more because maybe then we wouldn't have won the game by only 17 points.

As long as he doesn't get that many attempts in a single playoff game, it's passable this one time.

When he's hustling like that I don't mind, especially in the drivers seat to a win. His aggression is the reason James doesn't play.
It's a lot easier to deal with in a blow out win.

This is the kind of player he is imo. With Tony gone, its not out of the realm of possibility for him. He aired a wide open 3 in the flow of the game. He forced a few, but that is the kind of player he is when he feels he needs to do more.
Tim also fed him the ball a couple of times when he could have just taken it to the basket. Not a huge deal, shots were there for the most part. Manu was also deferring a whole bunch tonight as well.

But again, in a playoff game, he better know his role and defer and only, ONLY shoot when wide open or the shot clock is coming down.

Parker and Splitter out, It doesn't bother me he shot that much. He was very aggressive but just missed some good 3 pt selections.

For you guys who watched the game, some of those 3's were really wide open but I agree that some are forced. Just gotta limit and watch for those open ones.

He seems bright enough to pick his opportunities. With Parker back he is going to do more spot up shooting, and as long as he's open Pop will always give the shooter a green light.
Bonner is the true playoff liability. Thankfully we have additional options when he does his yearly disappearing act.

He does SEEM bright enough to pick his opportunities but the bright lights of the playoff scene can make young guys do stupid things...let's just hope he isn't one of those kids. I agree on Bonner, though. I'd rather Green take shots away from Bonner if that's what it came to in the playoffs.

Thats definitely a lot of shots. But the guy had one hell of a night:
18 points
6 rebounds
6 assists
1 steal
1 block
And all that with only 1 TO. The guy filled up the box score and was disruptive to the other team's offense. Somebody had to take up some of Tony's shots, and Danny just happened to be the open man tonight. And he was making things happen - so, why not?

It's not "He took 19 FGAs and on top of that there were a couple of bad shots"
It's the bad shots you should worry about - period.
The Spurs offense isn't some preset system that says Manu should be taking X shots if Tony is out, Danny should be taking X - Z shots, Jax should take X - Q shots, etc. etc.
The open man shoots the ball. Period.
Danny Green had a stretch where he seemed to force the issue a bit too much and took a couple of bad shots. Criticize him for that (Pop actually pulled him out of the game and had a little chat with him), but don't point to "19 FGA" and assume that 19 shots is inherently bad for Danny Green.
If Tony penetrates and kicks to a wide open Danny Green 19 times in a game, then Danny Green should be taking all 19 of those shots. It makes no sense to point to the FGA number alone.

Again, I think Danny may have forced the issue and taken a couple of bad shots during the entire game. I'm talking 2, maybe 3 bad shots total, and most of them were during that stretch where Danny tried to channel his inner Tony Parker :lol
To look at a stat sheet and go "Danny Green took 19 shots this game!" is hardly thread-worthy. To look at that number in isolation and criticize him for it is even worse.

I gave dude props in the op for all the rest of his game.. I just think he needs to clean a bit... sometimes he is forcing too much on some lay ups, 3s and mid range.

Yeah, I saw. I don't think you're right though :lol
When you think of Danny Green's overall performance tonight, it was really that one stretch where he took a handful of ill-advised shots that makes you want to facepalm (the stretch that led to Pop pulling him from the game and having a little chat with him). Before that stretch he was fine. After Pop's little pep talk - he was fine.
I don't agree that a "big part" of his 19 FGAs were bad.

I hear you. Danny definitely didn't have a perfect game on offense, and hopefully Pop's little pep talk fixes that next game.

:lol don't worry it's all good. I get your point too
I agree that he can't keep shooting 37% from the floor, and that he took some bad shots. But he had some good looks that just didn't go tonight. If he shot 10-19 (about 53%) we'd be talking about what a brilliant night he had. Or say he made just 2 more shots, and passed up 2 of the bad shots - that would be 9-17 (also about 53%), and we'd be talking about what a brilliant night he had.
He can improve, and probably will. I think he was just trying to keep the offense moving with Tony out. When a Spur has a wide-open shot and doesn't take it, they hear from Pop also. Some of those he wasn't supposed to pass up.
Just look at the line and realize that it was far from the worst performance anyone has put in for the Spurs this season.

Hopefully Pop takes note of this terrible shooting performance and puts him on the bench where he belongs. 7-19 FG, 4-4 FT is so horrific I can't even imagine how we pulled out this victory.

Generalizations like that don't do you any favors. Duncan was 6-18 FG, 3-4 FT.
And if you look at the rest of their lines, Duncan had 6 more boards, but Green had 3 more AST's, 1 more block, 1 more steal, and 2 fewer turnovers.
Green took some bad shots. But don't act like he didn't earn his keep, because of one stat. Or do you recommend benching Duncan, too?

I agree he's gotta tone it down a bit and not take so many shots, although all of his 3's were basically wide open. What gets me is that sometimes his 3-point shot looks amazing (against OKC) and some nights he's not even close (tonight).

He had a horrible 2 minute stretch in the 3rd where he ballhogged and looked like a jackass, but Pop pulled him aside, talked to him (in a surprisingly calm manner) and put him back in the game and there wasn't a problem after that.
Obviously, Pop liked his overall energy because he started the game on fire. I imagine Pop appreciates the overall effort, he just wanted him to redirect his energy. He did and it all worked out.
TJastal...was being sarcastic.
He posts shit like the one below all the time, and I'm supposed to guess that this one was sarcasm?
After seeing this, do people actually think Diaw will play better defense than Bonner or Blair? At least Bonner puts his arms up in the air and presents a mild distraction to the would be dunker.

Bro, I was being overly tongue in cheek and sorry you didn't catch it. I saw Duncan's stat line too and thought to myself.. wtf is this OP's problem? I wouldn't take Green out of the starting lineup for a mediocre shooting night after a string of 4 or 5 awesome games. Green has a sweet delivery, especially from range, and tonight was just one of those night they rattled out instead of in.
Kidding aside now, I hope Green sticks in the starting lineup as the starting 2, I think he fits there with Parker because he can space the floor, passes & rebounds extremely well, and plays above average defense.

Don't mind it, tbh. Timmy also forced a lot of shots outside of the flow of the offense, sometimes it's needed and I don't mind Green taking more responsibility. He plays with a swagger and I'm more and more impressed with him with every passing game. He offers so much more than just being a spot up 3 point shooter and roaming on defense, so it's OK if he can showcase it.
