“What differentiates us is to appreciate the philosophy of the club,” Pique said. “There are players who have been here for many years, and that does not happen today. The philosophy is, no matter what happens, they rely on the players.

“We’re talking about something that is unique. I compare it with the Spurs in basketball: (Tim) Duncan, (Manu) Ginobili and (Tony) Parker, always there. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. But other people follow, trusting them and giving results.”

He's describing Bayern Munich

Barcelona is a mafia organization in La Liga. They cheated in recruiting players and rely on hard working non-Spanish Europeans to fund their football club. I've always respected Real Madrid because they are honest with who they are, unlike Barcelona.

http://www.barcablaugranes.com/2015/5/22/8641149/report-barcelona-and-borussia-dortmund-agree-deal-for-ilkay-gundogan

Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have reached on Thursday a verbal agreement that will have Ilkay Gundogan signing with the Catalan giants once the club’s transfer ban is completed, on January 1st, 2016, sources told Barça Blaugranes. The midfielder has agreed to the terms proposed by the Blaugrana, and the German club is also on board with all offers.

...

According to sources, Gundogan will sign a five-year contract with the Blaugrana, and Dortmund will receive a $34 million fee. Bonuses will also be awarded to both the club and the player if he meets certain performance goals, such as appearances, goals scored, and titles, in a deal similar to the one agreed with Arsenal and Thomas Vermaelen.

Now there will be a long, six-month period between the agreement and the actual official announcement, and everything can happen. But, unless something insane occurs, Ilkay Gundogan will be the next Barcelona midfielder.

IDK, the transfer ban makes things really complicated. OTOH Dortmund has to publish bigger signings and earnings immediatly, if the have a big influence on their stock exchange price in Frankfurt. (adhoc-Meldepflicht, happenend so with Götze, Mkhitaryan, Klopp) So they would not be allowed to keep such an agreement locked for even a day, otherwise they could be accused for insider information/trading...

I'm not sure who has a better forwards then Barça, tbh. Messi, Suárez, Griezmann, Dembele and Coutinho, are way better than what Madrid or anyone in Europe has. I think signing Griezmann was a major upgrade? Sure it would have been better to replace Coutinho, that basically flopped in the 4:3:3 Barça plays, with Neymar. But I think Cristiano got the things done with less much help when played for Madrid, at least in short tournaments like the Champions that's a major problem for Barcelona in the Valverde era.

Coutinho is no longer in Barca. Dembele flopped and have already given up on him. Griezmann is an awful fit that will become a bench warmer in no time. Suarez scored 1 goal in the entire previous Champions League. Barca's attacking power is very overrrated, tbh.

Either way, attacking isn't the problem. You can't fuck up a 3-0 advantage in a tie.

I guess his unimpressive CL campaign and the failure at supercopa have taken it's toll. Adding Griezmann to already one of the best forwards lineup in football should have provided some results. Atleti was supposed to be weakened, but eliminated Barça from the super copa, making Barça president look like a fool.

For Atleti it was a mixed bag. On one hand they lost their main goal scorer and assists player, on the other hand Griezmann chocked in big game, sometimes penalties, and his €30M net salary was way too much.

Barça got €500M from Goldman Sachs, if I'm not mistaken. Though, Laporta has to cover huge losses of last two seasons with that money and get some cash for insanely high salaries Bartomeu left on books. They may get few players too, they need two good center backs and a defensive midfielder. Laporta brings Agüero . . . to at least keep Messi happy with his buddy, by whatever means necessary.

They may have to move Griezmann, his salary is very high and gets even higher every season. But those that really have to go, have untouchable salaries.

The rumours are Laporta intentionally signed the contract with Messi that La Liga would never pass, Messi was by so huge difference the best paid player that Barça couldn’t see value having him and Laporta wanted a new direction without Messi. If there’s anything to believe from Chiringuito, Messi’s father said Laporta he only used him to win the election. Who knows if Laporta winked La Liga to deny the inscription, so that Laporta could avoid the blame from the associates. It was suspicious Barça didn’t actually unload any contract to sign Messi. Barça fans are blaming Griezmann, for Messi’s exit.

But if Messi wanted to retire as Barça player, he just needed to ask Laporta for a €10M net x season x 10 years contract. But he always wanted top dollar. And is getting €40M net x season x 2 years + option for a third year from PSG. And is probably going to get a signing bonus too. Messi is more of a businessman than a passionate football player.

It’s not his fault Barça is in the situation that it is in, but his massive contract contributed. Though, Messi at least always delivered many goals and assists, just not against top competition in his last seasons in Barcelona.

The least of Barca's problems was Messi's contract. Messi could have earned twice as much as he was getting and he still would have generated profits for Barca and La Liga. The financial hit they are going to take without Messi to sell their product is huge.

Barcelona's problem has always been the same: Bartomeu. There's no excuse to have such a shit roster making 110% of the Club's earnings. Who knows if Messi will deliver the CL to PSG, with Donnarumma, Ramos and others plus a very solid team, but Barça will still be Barcelona, even without Messi.

Is Messi in his mid-30's really better today than MBappe or Lewandowski?

Neither Messi or Cristiano play in the Premier League, and they do just fine.

Madrid already had a good squad, it was a matter of limiting injuries and using all available talent. Barcelona has a lot of talent as well, but it's not great on defense. Atlético has a great squad, Sevilla is looking good too. And other teams don't stand still.

Things look pretty bad, when the forward to replace Messi and Griezmann is the third striker of Sevilla. Barça needs badly the Camp Nou to open, the tourists to return (but who are they gonna see play now?) and Nike to chip in with a ground breaking deal.

It seems that the strategy is to prop up Atlético de Madrid, to avoid Real Madrid widens the advantage in leagues won. Barça already cut the distance when Cruyff managed and during Messi’s era, and Atlético is far behind. I guess that were some of the reasons they shipped Suárez and Griezmann there.

Other reason is that no one would have touched Griezmann contract and paid €50M on top, while for Atlético he’s a known commodity. Also he said would only play for Barça or Atlético. And also to unload huge salaries and bring some cash.

As long as young players prove good and Barça manages to pay enough to keep them, the things will be good in the future, and as of now the team will still classify for the Champions League, win a Copa de Rey, pass the group phase in the champions league or win the Europa league, and not much more, till young players hit their prime. Also Koeman seems good, in his second season will coach better perhaps offsetting the players that left the the club.

Even with Messi and Griezmann it’s not sure Barça would have won more leagues or much less the Champions, so making some changes was necessary anyways. More so since the club is losing huge amounts of money and deep in debts.

It seems there will be 3-4 subpar seasons for Barça, till the the financial situation improves. The strategy was to ride on Messi’s prime and other great players like Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Suárez, Neymar to win as many Champions League trophies and La Liga titles as possible. Now the run is over, Messi couldn’t help win more leagues anymore and in the champions there were really no chances. They paid what had to be paid to have supposedly the best roster in the world, but after the pandemic hit, the team went bankrupt.

It looks like short term strategy is to prop up Atlético, so that they can take as many titles as possible from Real Madrid. Long term is to wait to see if new Masía players are world class and pray there’s money to re-sign them later. But perhaps the cash stream from the Camp Nou that’s now open will change a lot of things.

There are rumours Barça would sign Ronaldo if United fails to qualify for the Champions this season. Not sure if that makes much sense, but it will bring back the tourists to the Camp Nou, that’s for sure, which in turn will allow for younger long term signings for the future.

There’s a lot of hype with the return of the “Sargent” Xavi as manager. He already set a lot of rules and fines, that didn’t sit well with some veterans.

Barcelona signs Man City 21-years right winger Ferrán Torres for €55M plus €10M in variables. The salary is expected to be in region of €12.5M x year. The team has to reduce the salary mass to be able to register Torres with La Liga. The rumours are Piqué may retire.

Álvaro Morata, Spain NT and Juventus center forward is close to sign with Barcelona, the deal is 6-months loan followed by mandatory buyout in the €20-25M region. His contract is held by Atlético de Madrid and the transfer needs approval from Juve that are trying to find a replacement and are asking Morata to stay. Morata also asked for guarantees that will be registered.

===

Luuk de Jong seems on his way out of Barcelona.

Dembélé didn’t appreciate the signing of Torres that plays the same position and says has much better offers than what Barça offers for re-signing, apparently from PSG.

Laporta is also promising Haaland for the summer transfer window, to whoever would listen.

The problem I see is all that Barcelona sold to be able to sign good players. I think good chunk of the future TV rights is gone, the other part is a collateral for a previous loan, some shops are gone and other stuff. The socios may have to sell the club to Abramovich when the next financial crisis arrives.

Barca need to spend money to make money. Forseeing nothing in UCL but I think La Liga over a complacent Real team in '22 is decent chance. Barca hasn't won Domestic in 4 years I think, it's time. This is how they get off the pavement.

IMO Barca needs an outsider to come manage and change the identity. This club is hung up on a distant past that was filled with generational players. When Real plays Bayern they physically fight them. Barca is more focused on style over results. And this is an inferior mindset rooted in Messi's time with the Club.

I think Xavi only recently got some transfers, it’s within possible to get kicked out of group stages against Bayern and Inter, considering Barcelona is no longer a world class team, which goes even before Messi left. It’s also possible to lose vs Madrid at road, that’s probably still the best team in Europe.

I think he should stay all season, unless some streak of bad unexpected results. They should regroup, try win Europa league, which won’t be easy at all with many good teams there too, and try make it to the champions league.

They can’t say they play to win, when can’t, then what’s left is to gain time and market play style till Xavi assemble the line up.
