Throughout Shabazz Muhammad's recruitment, UCLA was constantly mentioned as the leader for his services. Other schools seemed to jump to the forefront, but the Bruins never really strayed from pole position.

On Wednesday, Muhammad made it official: he's headed to Westwood, sources told CBSSports.com. He will make the announcement ESPNU later tonight.

I've been saying it for almost two years now.

He is a good get for the year. Kyle Anderson is a great get for his entire time at UCLA. He's going to make an immediate impact, and, he's going to be one of those types of players you thinks been playing a decade for how long they've killed your team. As an Arizona fan, he is the bigger get for UCLA. Shabazz is important in name. Anderson is a foundational type a program can build around. He's a like a 6-8 Sam Cassell without the attitude issues.

Look out for Tony Parker committing. He's hard to miss at 6-8, 270ish. Twixt J'Mison Morgan, Josh Smith and now, likely, Parker, UCLA is FatCenterU...

Unlike DoK, I'm actually happy for UCLA. Pac-12 is never better when UCLA and Arizona are the goods. They are the two biggest programs from the conference, have sent a ton of players to the NBA, and are the most significant western US programs. When they are down, the whole west is down, it seems.

Oh I agree the Pac-12 needs to get back all of the respect it's lost for basketball and UCLA needs to return to glory for that to happen. I just don't see them returning to glory with a coach who doesn't discipline a psychopath and lets him get away with injuring his own teammates during practice.

To be completely honest, I think both Howland and Miller overstepped with a few of their recent classes. Howland was best with the humble, coachable types like Afflalo, Westbrook, Farmar, Collison, Love... He always had talent, but until that 2008 class, he never had quite so many know-it-all types. He started recruiting the more talented players who couldn't care less about the team. Miller is guilty of that too... I think, even with Shabazz, that Howland is back in his area of expertise. By all accounts Anderson and Adams are two very good players with a coachable mindset. Shabazz may be directed by his dad too much, but Shabazz seems open to addressing his flaws. With all the money that would have come his way buying in WWW and Kentucky, he identified that he needed more structure and defense to get better.

I think this year's classes mark the turnaround of the programs. I do. A coach doesn't get to 3 straight Final 4's on accident, nor does he send four 3-star prospects to the NBA without knowing how to coach.

He, like Miller, needs to heed the warning signs. Nelson and Morgon, like Sidiki and Turner, were problems in high school.

I'm not sure I understand why he wants another fatass C, though. He's clearly never had success with them, even ones far more talented or physically gifted than Parker. Guess he figures he's due for a breakthrough.

The difference between Miller and Howland is that Miller disciplined Turner the minute he started acting up. He didn't wait for the situation to get out of control. Howland knowingly let Nelson injure his own teammates during practice and treat the team managers like shit, and only took action after Nelson became a problem during games and his hand was forced.

We're also entering Miller's 4th season at UA and Howland's 10th season at UCLA. I don't think Howland gets to play the "I'm still learning how to detect problem child recruits" card as much as Miller might. Regardless, it's not like getting compared to Sean Miller is the best thing in the world right now. He still has a WAY better image than Howland but it certainly didn't help his image when he had a great freshman class come in and look as unprepared as it did this season. If they have a season next year like they had this year, it's really gonna be a problem.

Damn UCLA is going to be stacked upcoming season. Hope Ben Howland can take them all away. If he doesn't, fans are going to be looking for new blood.

Howland is now saying publicly that he expects Anderson to be a one-year player as well. Howland had better win it this year, because Drew, Shabazz and Anderson will all be gone according to Howland, and there's a good chance Smith joins them as well.

It's Final 4 or bust for Howland.

Merely rumor, but it originated on a neutral board who had no play for Anderson, saying Anderson's family was purchased a $250k home from an east coast booster.

I don't believe it, but the NCAA doesn't investigate every major recruit for nothing.

The family attorney has raised questions about the NCAA's right to scrutinize past events:

"Shabazz didn't even turn 18 until November of 2011 and until he signed with UCLA in April of this year was not under NCAA jurisdiction," Orr said.

Basically admits to improprieties and illegal benefits, arguing that the NCAA can't preside over pre-LOI transactions.

I'm hearing NCAA deems Muhammed's amateur status forfeit and like they did with Kantor at Kentucky in 2010-11, the will likely rule him ineligible for the season pending lawsuit from the family.

Parker was cleared, but Anderson will likely miss games, if not the season as well.

Father, Ron Holmes, has never hid the fact he allowed outside agencies/entities to fund his sons' (he has a second son that typically went on trips, probably killing that son's amateur status with that same stone) trips to all over this country on the "Shabazz Promotional Tour"... This in addition to taking all his official visits. Shabazz visited Arizona three times, only one being official. Same with Duke. He visited UCLA (from Las Vegas) something like a half-dozen times, only one being official. Apparently in the nearly dozen or more unofficial visits, the family never foot the bill once.

That and the speculation about money being funneled to the family by Adidas through his sister's unknown professional tennis career and you have red flags all over.

It's long been known he's been in bed with Adidas (UCLA is an Adidas school), but it wasn't (and still isn't) known to what extent he/his father was on the take for.

Looks like Anderson was cleared. A bit of a surprise that it took this long with no games missed. Maybe some outside hope for Shabazz for the Pac12 season? Still hearing no...

UCLA announces that the NCAA has declared Shabazz Muhammad ineligible for amateurism rules violations. School plans to appeal.

Anderson looks like he's gonna be pretty nasty so they'll still be good this year. If Bazz is somehow ruled eligible I think UA and UCLA both finish top 10 which hopefully restores some glory to the Pac-12.

JMarkJohns
11-10-2012, 12:44 PM
It's a fluid situation, but there's a chance he's ruled eligible for PAC-12 play. Just as strong he's out for year, assuming they connect enough widely known dots.

Flabbergasted at the ruling... Everyone I know thought he was out until PAC-12 play minimum, but Shabazz has been cleared and his eligibility reinstated. Crazy... Never seen the NCAA fold so fast.

I'm happy, as I want the PAC to be elite again. When AZ won its title in 97, they finished 5th in the conference. I want strength like that again. Shift them eastern eyes westerly...

They'll come around. Your defense is trash, however. A food offensive team like Arizona will destroy UCLA if it stays this bad.
