Reportedly says it "should be legal" during interview with Robin Roberts of ABC.

Don't have a link but it is on CNN News now.

About time and let cards fall where they may.

This is fucking hilarious. He sent Biden out last weekend to say the HE had no problem with gay marriage with the insinuation that he was speaking for the administration but that wasn't enough for the gay lobby...they have been hammering his ass all week and even demanding that the Democratic national committee office and the democratic convention move to a gay friendly state. He has to have their money and their votes so he got forced into having to come out in support of gay marriage which the clear majority of people in the US are against...I'll bet he hated the shit out of that but didn't have any choice.

Hussein ain't gonna get the "Christian" Taleban votes anyway, so he might as well get off the fence and put a plank in the Dem 2012 platform to push for same-sex marriage federally and vacuum up all the LGBT vote.

He should also put a plank for the DREAM act and vacuum up the majority of the Latino vote.

REPORT: Obama Expected To Endorse Marriage Equality In ABC News Interview

As President Obama prepares to sit down with ABC’s Robin Roberts this afternoon just hours after voters in North Carolina passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and civil unions, political reporters are predicting that he may finally complete his evolution and endorse the freedom to marry for gay and lesbian people.

“Every expectation that we will, within the next hour, be in a different world, where we will have a President of the United States who supports the legalization of gay marriage,” Mark Halperin said this afternoon during an appearance on MSNBC. “The Vice President, I think, forced his hand. But even before the Vice President spoke on Meet The Press in favor of gay marriage, the President was headed in this direction,”

http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2012/05/09/481085/obama-abc-news-marriage/

But as the Repugs are are defeating the SCOTUS decision allowing abortion, they will certainly defeat, at state level, a Federal statute on gay marriage.

Of course its a flip flop. But he is a politician and thats all politicians do. To think that Mitt has the flip-floping market cornered on Obama is either disingenuous or naive. Politicians will say or do whatever they think will help them get re-elected. I don't think this will help Obama, nor do I think his personal belief "evolved". Just his political.

Well, young people are more supportive of gay marriage, but getting out the youth vote is always a challenge. I think a few voters who voted for him grudgingly last time around will probably not vote for him this time specifically because their pastor will tell them they are going to hell if they vote for a gay marriage supporter.

The economy is still a big issue, but most people don't understand it. It's hard to make issues that people don't understand resonate deeply. That's why the "culture war" issues like gay marriage, abortion, etc. were invented. These wedge issues are ultimately pretty silly, but they're cut and dry. And people can take extreme positions on one side or the other, and subsequently vote based on that preference.

True. However, Romney's job is not to focus on the specifics of the economy because no one can follow, but rather, reiterate that people are not happy with the state of the economy today. People understand gimmick politics like are you making more money today than you were three years ago or do you pay more for gas today than you did thre years ago. Neither issue has anything to do with the president. But it sure pisses people off.

How do homosexuals feel knowing that they've been used as pawns by Democrats and Obama? Who's flip flopped more on gay marriage and gay rights: Obama or Willard?

I was surprised with Mitt. He did not go full on Sarah Palin with his response to Obama saying he's cool with homos getting married. He apparently has no problem with homos having domestic partnerships or being allowed to visit each in the other hospital. I bet that pissed off some hardcore conservatives.

Why can't people just step up and admit that marriage is basically a contract between two people in order to get benefits and personal gain? It's always been about that. Married people get more benefits and special treatment than single people. If you're married, you're considered normal. If you're single then you're not normal.

Obama Endorses Marriage Equality... But Not For All (http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/05/obama-endorses-marriage-equality-federalism)

The president stressed that this is a personal position, and that he still supports the concept of states deciding the issue on their own. Obama has endorsed marriage equality federalism—not the notion that marriage for gays and lesbians is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution that can never be taken away. Obama has adopted the same position that Vice President Dick Cheney did in 2004, when Cheney said he believed in marriage equality but that the states should be allowed to decide by a show of hands.

After Obama's announcement, Mother Jones' David Corn spoke with an administration source and asked whether the president recognized gay marriage as a right. The official replied, "He has always said that it is a state issue, and he's not suggesting changing that. He did not support the North Carolina amendment, but he's not saying he will bring up a piece of federal legislation on gay marriage. This is how he feels himself about the issue, and he leaves it to the states."

"states rights" is what the racist South/red-states used/uses to claim freedom to discriminate against blacks, and now browns.

Indeed, yes.

He now believes that gay couples should be able to marry. He doesn't believe they have a right to do so. This is like saying that black children and white children ought to attend the same schools, but if the people of Alabama reject that notion—what are you gonna do?

On this afternoon's special broadcast, Jake Tapper echoed that point: "The president said he thought this was a state-by-state issue."

Well, before Roe v. Wade, abortion was a state-by-state issue, too. So was slavery. There are 44 states in which gay men and women are currently barred from marrying one another. Obama's position is that, while he would have voted the other way, those 44 states are perfectly within their rights to arbitrarily restrict the access of certain individuals to marriage rights based solely on their sexual orientation.

That is a half-assed, cowardly cop-out.

Equality is not a state-by-state issue. There is no reason other than ignorance and hatred that two men can get married in New York and not North Carolina. At a time when vindictive hucksters are rolling out anti-gay marriage amendments across the nation, and when conflicting state and federal laws portend an insoluble morass of divorce, custody, and estate issues, and when gay Americans are turning to the U.S. Constitution and the courts to seek an affirmation of their humanity, "it's a state-by-state issue" is a shameful dodge.

In fact, Obama has not “evolved”—he has changed his position whenever his political fortunes required him to do so. Running for the Illinois state senate from a trendy area of Chicago in 1996, he was for gay marriage. “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages,” he wrote in answer to a questionnaire back then. In 2004, he was running for the U.S. Senate and needed to appeal to voters statewide. So he evolved, and favored civil unions but opposed homosexual “marriage.” In 2008, running for president, he said, “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage.” Now in 2012, facing a tough reelection campaign where he needs energized supporters of gay “marriage” and has disappointed them with his refusal to give them his support, he is for it. To paraphrase John Kerry, he was for it before he was against it before he was for it again.

Cash Pours In For Obama After Same-Sex “Evolution,” No Boost For Romney

While Barack Obama’s dramatic embrace of same-sex marriage Wednesday opened the floodgates of fundraising and enthusiasm for his re-election campaign, it appears to present new challenges for Mitt Romney.

Despite suggestions that the president’s new position would bring out impassioned foes of gay marriage, it is supporters who so far have been most energized by the president’s move.

Gecko "EVOLVES" very fast

Mitt Romney’s Support Of Same-Sex Adoption Lasts One Day

Among Mitt Romney’s timid responses this week after President Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality was an admission that he was “fine” with same-sex couples adopting children, saying, “that’s something that people have a right to do.” But by Friday afternoon, he was already backing away from that position, suggesting that he merely “acknowledges” that many states offer same-sex adoption:

http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2012/05/12/483187/romney-now-only-acknowledges-same-sex-adoption-days-after-supporting-it/

It is really pretty mealy-mouthed approval, imho, but achieves a feel-good moment for the GL alliance and actually costs him nothing. Good politics, poor courage evidence. Pretty classic Obama, I think.

I agree except i think it will hurt him more than help. anyone who wants gay marriage changes were going to vote for him anyways. This will definitely turn alot of people against him. Although I think most people who were on the fence have other concerns besides this. But there are people who feel like this is their stand point. Like me and pro-life.

Top GOP Pollster to GOP: Reverse On Gay Issues

onclusion is clear: if the GOP keeps up its current rhetoric and positions on gays and lesbians, it is in danger of marginalizing itself to irrelevance or worse.

Read the bluntness of this. This is the GOP establishment talking to itself. And the Republican pollster who arguably knows more about the politics of the gay issue than anyone else (how else to explain the Ohio campaign of 2004?) is advising them in no uncertain terms that they need to evolve and fast, if they're not going to damage their brand for an entire generation:

I'm saying his stance isn't relevant because it doesn't change anything. It only serves to draw contrast with the Republicans, which already existed...hence the irrelevance and pandering.

So when Dubya was trying to get a Constitutional amendment to keep marriage how it was supposed to be, and all the libs said it was a distraction. Now it is ligitimate?

Not bland, historic. First president ever to endorse same-sex marriage.

But it changes nothing if there is no federal legislation to enforce it as a civil right and override red-state discrimination.

Historic in a limited sense, given Dick Cheney's identical position on this matter.
Obama went out of his way to stress that his "endorsement" was entirely personal and not political. This strikes me as dishonest and manipulative in the extreme, as he's clearly trying to get credit for a position without taking any real political risks.

The media framing/distortion has been astonishing, for one could honestly and accurately claim that Obama, in his political capacity as POTOS has not in fact endorsed endorsed gay marriage but rather states rights.

My state is a liberal haven, and same sex marriage was rejected bu the voters.

Consioder this...

Oregon elects liberal.

Most Oregon voters are left of center.

In the 2004 November election (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_state_elections,_2004), Kerry had 51.45 in Oregon, Bush had 47.2% On the same ballot was measure 36 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Ballot_Measure_36_%282004%29). The constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman passed. It passed 56.63% to 43.37%.

I disagree, the people who would vote against him for this purpose were already going to vote against him for many of his other transgressions (abortion, being a muslim, being a kenyan, etc). This, as a political stunt, will draw more people who were going to stay home into the voting booth than it will draw in for romney (especially since overall more americans support it than oppose it 47-43 percent and its moving fast: 6 years ago it was 60-30 against).

Edit, go back to manny's post at the beginning to see gallups linked polls. They have some different numbers ( I saw mine on the news), but still generally support the argument.

Well, if I might respond with roughly related slovenian example:

In 2001 we had a recall referendum over a law that would legalize IVF for single women. Not necessarily lesbians, just any women not in registered partnership with male.

It was recalled with 72,36 % for recall and 26,38 % against.

This year same group of people got their panties in a bunch over a new family law that would among other things give family status to same sex partnerships where one of adults is genetic parent and enable other one to adopt the child(ren). Nothing about marriage, just legal status of families with their rights&benefits.

It was recalled again but this time with 54.77 % for recall and 45.23 % against.

Almost 20% change in 11 years on an issue that is almost the same from ideological standpoint. And you can see the same trend all over Europe and USA.
