They met the would be SB champs twice last season, beat them and went into OT to lose due to fumbles.
Over the season...
They won the turnover battle.
They were number one vs the run.
Their all time leading rusher is there right now in Frank Gore.
The best TE they have ever had is there right now in Vernon Davis.
They have added a future Hall of Fame receiver in Randy Moss.
A speedster out of Oregon in LaMichael James.
A productive banger in Brandon Jacobs.
A speed receiver out of Illionis in A.J.Jenkins.
A solid receiver in Mario Manningham.
They play in the weakest division in the league.
Let's break down their schedule.
at GB..loss
Detroit...win
at Minn...win
at Jets..loss...back to back on the road a killer
Buffalo...win
Giants...win..back to back at home, huge!
Seattle...win
at Ariz...win
St.Louis...win
Chicago...win
at NO...hmmm? We don't know what's up with them.
at St.Louis...win
Miami...win
at NE..loss
at Seattle...win
Arizona...win
Ok I'll give them a loss somewhere where they should have won.
So....11-5
Alex Smith is coming off his best season.
I think it's very realistic to see them as one of the top 4 teams in the league.

Since you came real (sorta) I'll toss you a bone.
Moss was a good indoor sprinter while at Marshall. a 21.1ish 200 guy.
James was a 10.4 running HS track in Texas.
A.J.Jenkins a 4.3 40 guy.
The All Time Niner 4x1
Renaldo Nehemiah-Deion Sanders-0.J.Simpson-Ray Norton a 1960 Olympian 9.3 WRholder.

The 100m is something totally different than what we see on a football field. The reason being everything over a 60 takes speed endurance, that ability to sustain/maintain a high % of max velocity. We don't see that in football, there it's all about accelleration. Actually more about quickness than speed other than a receiver running a fly pattern.
The fastest footballer I've ever seen (meaning in pads in football situations) was Rocket Ismail in his ND days. He was at full speed in two steps and could cut, shake n' bake at near full speed. Yet he was a so so sprinter.
Curtis Dickey is the only running back in NFL history to be world ranked in the 100. He was out of Texas A&M,a 220 pounder with massive thighs. A 10.10/9.2 guy but you'd never know it, he didn't have those quicks, that acceleration. He would have destroyed Ismail in any sprint but not on a football field.

Gore is on the downside of his career, and sucked the second half of the season.
Moss is washed up and a year removed from playing.
James is just a little scatback, and a rookie at that.
Jenkins should've been a 3rd rounder at best and rumors already saying he will be inactive for games this year.
Jacobs flat out blows.
Manningham at his best is solid.
Alex smith will prove last year was a fluke, and the 49ers will lose their first playoff game.

You have no idea where Moss is at, none at all.
James is elusive, he'll be put in situations to maximize his "make um miss" ability.
It's a long season, Jenkins will be a factor.
Jacobs is a situational player now, he like James will be put situations to take advantage of his power.
Alex Smith was one game away from a SB last season, They have the same defense and more quality skilled players, what's that tell you?

Smith just has to be that dreaded word, 'game manager' and he should be fine. I mean, he was alright when the offense was not too complex and having Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Mario Manningham, and a top-3 defense will all help. Playing in the equivalency of the Pac-12 South, doesn't hurt either. They do have some tough games against NE, NO (if they're back to normal by then) and the NYG. I say 12-4 with two surprise loses (ARI or Seattle) and the Patriots/Giants

Newton is already producing better than Alex Smith did in his best season ever..... because Newton's a double threat QB, you can't just look at his passing stats (which are great for a rookie QB).... he led all quarterbacks in rushing DYAR and effective rushing yards.... he also single-handedly improved Carolina's offense from the least efficient in the league in 2010 to the 4th-most efficient offense in 2011, in his rookie year.....

Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski is conducting an ongoing segment in which he ranks his top 30. On Monday, "Jaws" named San Francisco 49ers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/san-francisco-49ers) Alex Smith (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2116/alex-smith) his 16th best quarterback in the league. The thing is; if that defense replicates what it did last year he doesn't have to be great/good. He is a tad bit mediocre because he still made big plays when it counted. I would rather have Alex Smith than Brady Quinn or Colt McCoy. He just has much, much, better weaponry around him he doesn't have to go all out and get 5k yards, 30+ touchdowns, 60%+ completion rate, or a QB rating of 95--just don't fuck it up. I mean he's not going to throw a lot of ints when he's not asked to make big time NFL throws. 3100 yards for an NFL Qb is not good. Completely due to their top-10 defense in the league, which is also 3rd in DVOA and weighted defense....
Here's a couple more embarrassing stats....
San Francisco's offense was 16th in the league in variance last year, meaning that Smith led a very inconsistent offense....
SF was 23rd in yards per drive and led the league in turnovers per drive....
Again, in Smith's BEST season, he was mediocre and inefficient and the offense he led was inefficient, inconsistent, and turnover-prone..... just goes to show that no matter the sample size, he isn't a good quarterback... get over it, B....

It was fun kicking around you showing eveyone just how totally fucked up you really are. But now Im getting bored with you. So this will be the final say on this, as usual your comeback will suck and won't be read so don't bother
Right now Alex Smith is finally finding himself, he will have the best receivering corp he's had. Like Jaworski said (believe it or not he knows far more about NFL QBing than you do) and I agree Smith is right there in the middle. Hardly a great QB, hardly a bad QB, he's a good QB.
See how you work, the Niners have a top 10 defense? How about one of the top 3?
Ok man once again talking at you is like going to the dentist, a total downer. You're too stupid to be entertaining and to uncreative to pose a challenge, yep a waste of time.
So it's come to this, if I ever respond to you again I'm gone for good. You make it too obvious that if I gave you a brand new 100 dollar bill you'd find something wrong with it. You just have some need to bug me.

Not much, I have to admit... except Alex Smith. I will say that stable of receivers is as good as it's been since at least 98', imo (Stokes/T.O./Rice)

Okay Avante...look at the schedule and tell me what you think the record will be
I've got at least 10-6...losses to Green Bay, New England, and New Orleans on the road. maybe even the Jets since those long east coast trips are tough as hell. Then one more at home to either the Giants/Lions/Bears...maybe 2 of those teams. 11 is doable too.
This schedule is so much more difficult than last year. Thank goodness the division sucks balls

We have that rare three game home stand then a rare Thurs then Mon games. Great position to be in.
We'll go 7-1 at home. We'll blow a game.
On the road...4-4 maybe 5-3. So in an attempt to not be a homer...11-5
It's a bummer starting off in GB but I do pity Detroit the following week in SF. Good teams coming off a loss back at home....gold!!!!!!!

Smith has what offensive coordinator Greg Roman calls a "unique" ability to grasp a game's dynamics in real time for the purposes of managing risks. On the surface, that sounds like a creative way to avoid slapping the dreaded "game manager" label on a quarterback with limited skills. The 49ers don't see it that way at all. They think Smith has demonstrated all the intangibles great quarterbacks should possess: mental and physical toughness; an off-the-charts football IQ; a level head no matter the circumstances; a passion for preparation; and the ability to perform in the clutch. They see him leading an offense that wasn't as bad as advertised, one that should only get better. http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/71690/camp-confidential-49ers-2

Now we will see a team without an elite QB win in the NFL in todays game. You win the turnover battle, you give up less than 20 points, you play solid special teams you can not only win but prosper.
A middle of the pack QB in the Superbowl, thanks to a solid running game, a monster D and the best special teams in the league.
Yes todays NFL is about throwing the ball. The Niner will be the exception.

The Niners were 29th in passing, the Ravens were 19th. Both a few plays away from meeting in the SB. Who would is motoe that keeps then running for those teams....Frank Gore/Ray Rice and defense. So yes you can win with a strong running game and a monster D.

The bottom line is this...
If you have a great/elite QB like an Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees you can get by without a great defense/running game. Yes a great passing attack will be enought. If however you don't have that great/elite QB you can win if you do everything else well. You must win the turnover battle, run the ball, play monster D and special teams. So it's easier to win with that great/elite QB but you can win without one if you have a great team.
Alex Smith is a middle of the pack QB, but on a team with Frank Gore/Vernon Davis/monster SD/best special teams in the league he can win. So it takes a lot more to make up for an average QB.

Doesn't anyone here watch the games? I'm starting to wonder because if you do how many times have you heard......until they can establish the run...or....they need a running attack.....well?
Here's reality...(fantasy example)
The Giants have no running game, Jacobs is hurt and Bradshaw is nursing a sore hammy. The Eagles know that. On first down Bradshaw has a hole but lacks that burst...2 yards. Second down those backers are laying back not at all concerned with an 80% running back. Eli throws to Nicks...incomplete...third and 8. Now what happens, yep here comes that Eagle pass rush.
Now what if the Giants have a ground game? Bradshaw explodes for seven, still an incomplete pass but it's now 3rd and short. No way those backers are laying off, this is a run/pass?????....situation. The Eagles are also reluctant to all out rush Eli.
That's what a running game does. It makes the passing game so much more effective.
I guarantee all that will be said sometime during some game you are watching in 2012. That is football.
Yes we could easily of had the Niners vs Ravens in last seasons SB, three plays away from that happening so to play..."it's all about passing the ball"...isn't realistic. Yes yes yes it is a pasing league, no no no that isn't the all everything.

17. Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers

Analysis: Smith had the greatest rise of any quarterback in football last year. I ranked him 28th going into last season, and his résumé made him more a miss than a hit. Thanks to Jim Harbaugh's scheme and hard work by Smith, he has become a playoff-caliber Pennington.

How about breaking Alex Smith down and telling us what he can do to improve?
How should the Niners juggle all these receivers in order to keep them happy and mentally in the game?
What players, outside of Willis/Rodgers/Smith, will be key on defense?

As we know Jenkins has been a disappointment but it is early. There will be plenty of work for everyone, keeping them in the game, are you serious? Vernon Davis will continue to be Vernon Davis. I think both Kyle Williams and Tedd Ginn have accepted their role as backups.
How can you even mention defense without mentioning NaVarro Bowman and Dashon Goldson, I'm guessing you were talking about Aldon Smith not Justin. As we know that front seven is the best in the league, Ray McDonald!!!!!!! Right here is the real strength of the 49ers. No team has a better front seven.
Look for rookie safetyTrendon Robinson MSU to make an impact in nickels. I don't see James keeping Kendall Hunter on the bench so he will be a disappointment. Also not sold on Jenkins...yet.
That Niner O line has youth and experience with 11 year vet Jonathan Goodwin and a bunch of second/third year players. Staley being the stud obviously. Moving Boone into that RG spot is ify, right now it's..? There will be no problem in the offensive line, plenty of quality depth.
Alex Smith, what can he do go from a middle of the packer to an elite QB? How about some stability to begin with, he's played in how many different systems? Obviously his biggest problem is that holds on to the ball to long, he need to unload a hell of a lot quicker. He also needs to do a better job of throwing receivers open. With another year in the same system and the addition of Moss, Manningham and maybe Jenkins should help. As we know he does protect the ball, only five INT's.

Every single "elite" quarterback came into this league as an unproven commodity. There is no such thing as a great quarterback right out of the box. How many rookies QB's have won the super bowl? They have to grow into that role. Most, if not all of them, show flashes early on, but still require the right ingredients around them to fulfill their potential. So your preceding argument sucks. I agree about Crabtree, for now. However, I don't think you can fully judge him yet since he hasn't had a guy who can get him the ball on a consistent basis. Since his early holdout and some flashes of being a prima-donna, he's (for the most part) buckled down and bought into the team effort. His hands are like flypaper, even though he doesn't have the speed some other guys do, so I think he could still become a legit number one target. Larry Fitzgerald is the guy that comes to mind when I think about Crab. He's not there, nor really close, but I think he could definitely become that type of player if he works hard enough and gets the deliveries he needs

Those guys you mentioned are now elite, period. By (my)definition, no single QB in history was elite when they won their first SB.
These are the takes that will get you places around here. Not the regurgitated, generalized, shit that you seem to fall back on when people hurt your feelings
Again, what you don't understand is that at the end of the day nobody gives a fuck how much more you may know than they do. You probably do know more than me since I don't have a "fortress of solitude" where I can ignore my wife and read FB publications all day. I'm cool with that. It was simply a way for me to push your buttons and challenge you to become a less shitty poster. Your delivery and style (not substance) are what get you in trouble around here. Tone down your god complex, relax a bit, and stick to your obviously wide range of football knowledge and you'll be okay.
Just a message board guy, do what I do have fun with it. Too many here are way too serious. I act the way I do because it's more exciting/interesting than being just another poster. What's really cool is that I tell the truth about everything, funnier than hell reading..."you don't have all that music"..knowing I do.."you don't know football"...when I obviously do. It's funny seeing the reaction after you've proven yourself. Look at you, you actually thought I was just some trivia/history freak, nope! I'm a gambler I have to know what's going on today.

You really do need to bone up on SB history and QBing. Hopefully you don't think I think that rookie QB's are great. I hope you also know that you are totally wrong about most of that. Yes "elite" QBs have won the SB. I can't believe you said that.
The fact that Eli and Big Ben morped into elite QB's they were anything but that when they won their first. What came later means nothing. So you are wrong about all that. Yes with the ...right incredients...remark.

While Crabtree obviously has to potential to be a solid receiver he is a galaxy away and always will be from Larry Fitzgerald, two totally different levels.

Getting back to the Niners.
They need to keep Anthony Dixon, cat runs hard. At this stage of the game I like him better than Jacobs, he needs to be our banger.
If LaMicahel James isn't hurt (ankle?) why isn't he getting more play? Get this cat out in space, a 10.4 guy while in a Texas HS.
Kendall Hunter has that explosion it's time to start to share the starting RB play. Gore is still productive but he doesn't have that ..zooom!!!
Our D/ST will once again be among the leagues elite. Nothing to change/fix/worry about.
Alex Smith..??? Well he has never had the depth/variety of talent at wide receiver he now has. I do think he will be more effective and needs that running game meaning third and short/play action, he is not and never will be able to win games because of himself (Mannings, Brady, Brees. Rodgers he is not). He has to have a system that buts him in situations to succeed. If the D knows what's coming he will struggle. He simply isn't that talented. Just saw another QB ranking (ESPN) there's Alex is at 17, yep, middle of te pack.
With all that said, the Niners will win the weakass West (Seattle coming on) they will once again need that homefield advantage. They cannot go into NY/GB and win a playoff game there. They can beat anyone in SF. They showed that by beating the SB to be Giants then taking them into OT last season....in....SF.
All in all the Niners are one of the top teams in the league .....right now.

Smith played well, no two ways around it. The score really shouldn't have been as close as it was, since Cobb's TD return only happened due to a block in the back.
Smith? B+ Could've got deep more often and once again held the ball for too long, too often
O-line B+ Looked good run-blocking and played better than I thought they would in the passing game
Run game A Gore and company did work
Receivers A Got open often and did really well supporting the run. Smith missed some opportunities that weren't their fault
Special Teams A+ Akers and Lee, nuff said. Lee does need to be careful not to out-kick his coverage
D-Line B+ A couple sacks and plenty of pressure. Didn't like it when Fangio went to 3 down lineman
LB's B+ Bowman is a beast. Brooks had a few big plays late. People stay away from Willis so thats why he doesn't get bigger numbers, imo (he was also curiously out quite often...wonder why)
Secondary A Incredibly solid throughout. Kept everything in front of them and made some big plays when Rodgers went deep

Nothing to disagree with there. A solid "team" performance. Now we get the Lions Sunday night, a game we should win. We do have a road and road situation which is never good having us in Jetville in that second game. That might be tricky. All in all...13-3 is very realistic.
Bottom line is we ended up one game away last year, opened up beating one of the SB favs this year. What's not to like? We've beaten all the top NFC teams in the last couple seasons.
Good to see Kendall Hunter getting more action, cat has that burst.

I like his arm but it doesn't change the fact that he's a gimmicky spread guy with little experience putting his hands securely against another mans jock, making reads that involve more than two receivers, and taking 3 quick steps and then getting the ball out quickly... He needs to learn how to be a real NFL QB in real NFL games. Wildcat gimmick shit won't help that process

Houston might have that. Houston is great on defense too, but has a better offense (by a bigger margin than SF's D has over HOU's D). Will be interesting to see how it goes. They are beast right now though, but I don't trust that offense of theirs.

I still don't trust the offense, not one goddamn bit. They're nearly unbeatable with a lead, but if they fall behind they're in big trouble.
Minnesota came out and punched them in the mouth and bullied them on both sides of the line of scrimmage which set a tone they just couldn't match.
That's a blueprint very few teams can follow (considering Minny caught the Niners half-asleep and full of themselves, imo), but right now I definitely see Houston and Baltimore as teams that can do exactly that...Plus, both of those squads have much better play at the quarterback position which we all know is paramount to a Super-Bowl winning team
I give the edge to Houston right now...basically what DPG said

Another interesting matchup for the Niners will be Arizona. That contest may well end up as a 6-3 type game
They also play New England, a team that could get up early and force Smith to throw (:lol Smith) which spells doom for Niner chances
Basically, with Smith at QB they just aren't a SB team. Greg Roman can't protect AS with his shrewd playcalling all year, nor can Alex rely on the defense to pitch shutouts so he can plod along throwing 8 yard seams to VD and 9 yd out routes to Trabtree

Totally disagree.
We don't need another QB we need somebody who can bring something unique/different. He's not a running QB, he's a running back who chose to play QB, he could probably dust Gore in a 40. He adds another demension. Something teams will have to take into account. We don't need him to be just another QB.

The Niners tore the Bills a new asshole. The reason being the Niners are a quality team while the Bills are one of the weaklings in the league. They are....3-10 in their last 13. When was the last time they beat a good team on the road?
The Niners have three big games coming up, they will probably lose one of them. Then after their bye week probably knock out 5 wins, hard to beat the Pats in NE. So we are looking at 12-4, 13-3.

And the first time he faced adversity/deficit this year (Minnesota), he became the Alex Smith we all know and love

Bottom line, Smith is still not good enough for the playoffs...rest of the team? better than anyone else in the league. Quarterback? still in the mid teens...

Schaub's problem has been health, not talent. He led the NFL in passing yds a couple years ago. He can actually win you a game (I.e. Denver game), rather than play game manager.
I agree. Schaub is easily better than Smith. And they have better skilled players as well.

Schaub is better than Smith, no question, but I think skill players are a wash. Niners also have the better D

I think the Texans have the edge at the skilled players. Niners have the edge on D, but Texans have a very good defense as well. Very underrated secondary.

LOL, they just beat a junior high school defense. Get back to me when smith beats a legit defense....plus, he can't beat anyone from behind...except his boyfriend...amiright?!
Do you really believe that?
Has the guy not been playing better than ever for awhile now? Hell what's the great Aaron Rodgers doing? The great Drew Brees..1-4. The guy is doing just fine.
