Can't speak for predents but getting into schools like Harvard medical school ain't so easy. While performances in undergrad, MCAT, and shadowing are very important, research is gradually becoming a must for applicants, especially if those applicants are considering matriculating into upper tier schools. As such, one thing I've noticed between all the prehealth professions is that research is highly recommended for premeds, especially if one is aiming to matriculate into schools like John Hopkins and Stanford. All the upper and some mid-tier medical schools compete with each other in that area...something I am for and against for various reasons but that's a totally different discussion altogether.

Of course. I did some "organic chemistry" research at UTSA to pad my applictaion cuz I knew I'd be competing against people from more legit schools. Dental school in general has about a 7-10 percent acceptance rate so I did everything I could to improve my chances. For us there really isn't a universally accepted "top tier" school. San Antonio, UCLA, etc were all considered top at one point. Harvard is only prestigious by name. Clinicians from there aren't any better necessarily, although if you wanted DDS PhD you'd be a beast.

Im sure it's better now, but over 15 years ago, I stayed there for a Law/Government symposium. I forget the name of the dorm but an occasional roach was spotted. Never saw that attending UCLA. I once lived in an apartment in the valley with roaches before my parents bought a house. Roaches are a non starter for me, I vowed to never live in a place with them ever again. i was thinkn of going back to school and get into nursing, since nursing there are also different fields...but the problem is when govts have budget cuts and shit, public sector jobs are usually first to go....even though job security is very good
