Coming out of HS, I had like 1800 on my SAT and got accepted to all the schools I applied for (Tech, a&m, UNT, Arkansas) except for UT. But Im going to a community college for my first 2 years because I didnt have a lot of money and I'm trying to save some. Classes are cheap (109 vs 1k).

Sure, but he's from San Antonio and would continue living there, so presumably you already have friends in SA you can hang out with/date locally. Plus living at home should save you some money if you are willing to work so that makes up for the gas IMO.

I actually got accepted to UT-Austin, but chose UTSA. Money was kind of an issue, (my sis offered to pay for my rent if moved to SA) but if you're Pre-Dental, UTSA surprisingly has a damn good acceptance rate due to proximity to the UT Health Science Center Dental School. They've also got an early acceptance program where you do 3 years at UTSA and automatically get a seat at the dental school. Didn't do that program tho, cuz I wanted to party a lil' more for a 4th year.

I'm happy with my decision. Still a dentist now even if I went to UTSA.

I can easily explain how it could be a big deal. 180 miles 3 times a week is 540 miles per week. with a car that gets an average 25mpg, assuming he has a new car that actually still gets that, that is 21.6 gallons of gas weekly at 3.25 per gallon average so 70 bucks a week in gas just to get to school, and that is probably a lowball estimate. throw in a 200 dollar a month car note, 280 in gas, 200 in food, 80 dollar cell phone bill, and we are already at 760 a month excluding clothes, books, going out, etc.

Can't speak for predents but getting into schools like Harvard medical school ain't so easy. While performances in undergrad, MCAT, and shadowing are very important, research is gradually becoming a must for applicants, especially if those applicants are considering matriculating into upper tier schools. As such, one thing I've noticed between all the prehealth professions is that research is highly recommended for premeds, especially if one is aiming to matriculate into schools like John Hopkins and Stanford. All the upper and some mid-tier medical schools compete with each other in that area...something I am for and against for various reasons but that's a totally different discussion altogether.
