Who would be your #1 realistic option?
There are all kinds of names floating around...
Honestly, I want Petrino(former AU OC). Probably not realistic, though. Other unrealistic names that are around are Cowher and Gruden, even seen Jack Del Rio's out there. Auburn can pay Saban type money, so it's not ridiculous in that respect, I just don't think any of those guys would want to live in Alabama for the long haul
Dana Holgerson, Gus Malzahn(former OC), Charlie Strong, Gary Patterson (been passed over before), Art Briles, Chris Peterson, Mike Gundy (he's a man, he's 40), Butch Jones, Pat Fitzgerald..even coordinators like Smart and Chavis
Really, I like any of those names above. Strong, Holgerson, Peterson at the top. Auburn can pay significantly more than any of those schools are paying now and it wouldn't be a situation coming in where the cupboard is bare. Not to mention the recruits that are committed (if they stick around, an iffy proposition)
Whatever Auburn does, they need to do a couple things...Find a proven HC with experience in either the NFL or FBS and dangle 4M+
But, the reality is they'll probably hire some nobody from the Sun Belt or the Ohio Valley conference and cross their goddamn fingers.

Petersen turned down Florida, Stanford, UCLA, Penn State, and Oregon.... I find it hard to believe he'd go to Auburn tbh... I think he probably sees himself as the new Osborne, Bowden or Snyder, staying at the program he built....
Also, I think Patterson and his manboobs will stay at that drug ring in Ft. Worth....

Yeah, I realize Peterson is unrealistic, but I can dream :lol
Auburn's AD is borderline short bus material, so I don't expect much assuming this scenario comes to pass....Which, even with a winless SEC campaign, is anything but a sure thing

SEC matchups today...my straight-up picks in parentheses
Tenn @ (MSU)
Auburn @ (Ole Miss)
(Bama) @ Mizzou
(Florida) @ Vandy
UK @ (Arky)
USCe @ (LSU)
(TA&M) @ LA Tech
Still think the Cocks are too inconsistent to go into Baton Rouge and win a night game.
Aggy better hold it down against a scrappy non-conference foe. Shouldn't be too difficult, though
Gators may be looking at a trap game on the road against Vandy.

Its so bad that I am cheering for everyone to beat Auburn (although I've still watched every game) to hurry the inevitable firing of Cheezit. Still have a few friends back down there (who both have season tickets) and they're so pissed they both said they're not going to another game. It makes me sick to see them play this way. Look for an increasing number of empty seats as the season drags on, as well as some of these top ranked recruits to decommit. If Auburn was smart they would fire Chizik now and get the search underway, but they won't. I just read a couple posts on an Auburn board which states quite reasonably the reason shit is so fucked up on the plains. Here they are:
A 1-6 start will definitely open the door for staff changes for 2013 but how bad does it have to get to make a complete change? For those making that decision, the question should not be whether or not Gene Chizik should be retained but whether or not they believe Chizik can turn the program around. I believe it's imperative that Chizik produce a short-term yet detailed plan on how he would correct Auburn's issues before considering his future as Auburn's head coach. The concern is not the current state of the program but how it arrived here. Before anything can be repaired a sound diagnosis must be completed to determine the correct solution.
This is my fear of retaining Coach Chizik at this point. Though I believe his intent to build the program into a contender was present, all of Auburn's shortcomings fall upon his feet. If he was too short sighted in the first place to recognize he was losing control of the program, how can we now expect him to find his way? If you were the victim of a botched surgery, would you allow the same doctor to correct his mistakes or seek the assistance and guidance of another surgeon? This is not about whether or not Gene Chizik is a good man but whether or not he is the right fit to lead Auburn's football program. He brought Auburn a national championship and he was rewarded handsomely for his efforts. He was also paid to maintain a high level of consistency, something he has failed to accomplish.
If the decision is made to retain Coach Chizik but with major changes to his current staff, what are the odds of him making home run hires with 4-5 new coaches? What assistant coach would be willing to step into a situation, where it could be a one and done situation if the team struggles again in 2013? Money can be a huge motivator but established or proven assistants also want job security and the comfort of knowing that they will be given time to make all the needed repairs and changes. This could be an obstacle difficult to overcome with a lame duck in place at head coach. Again, taking this option would require the assurance that Gene Chizik truly recognizes the team's primary issues and how to address them. Is there anything in his work history that would indicate he can do this?
At this point, the team can only play for pride the remainder of the season but it's obvious certain folks will need to come to an important decision regarding Auburn's future. I'm grateful I don't have to make that decision because there are no guarantees on any decision made. I've seen enough Auburn football in my lifetime to know that Auburn can and will overcome this season with or without Gene Chizik calling the shots. This thought alone brings some comfort but until changes are made, it will be difficult to be excited about Auburn football in its current state. You don't have to be an expert or coach to know this isn't close to Auburn football and the players are deserving of better leadership. As fans all we can do right now is support the players as they continue to battle through this nightmare of a season. http://www.aufamily.com/forums/topic/126777-vanderbilt-postgame/
I really wish I could believe or have hope that we would go get a guy like Gruden or Cower or Dungee. That would be great. That would be a total grand slam and would immediately strike fear in the hearts of LSU, AL and the rest of college football. Sadly, that's not how we do things at Auburn. To get a guy like that you have to get out of the way and turn the program over to them. A guy like that will not come to Auburn or any other school without having complete control of his program. That's the problem at Auburn. We have too many people who want to have their hand in the say so of the program...and it's not Pat Dye though many like Finebaum try and convince you of that. Pat Dye doesn't have near as much power as people act or think. Instead of going out and getting a grand slam hire, we want to go get a guy like Bobby Petrino and tell him he has to keep Van Gorder and maybe one or two others and tell him who his support staff is and who his G.A.'s are and who his strength coach is etc. etc. etc. The powers that be do not want to allow someone to come in and run the program. They want to run it and have these little puppet coaches run the day to day operations.
All of this is fact...not rumor. And it's worse than this....And I don't want to go off on this a lot but I have been screaming to whoever would listen (nobody) that Tim Jackson needed to go since Cam was here. Tim Jackson's basic role is to watch over the coaching staff's shoulders during the game and report back to Double J, who by the way is just a puppet himself. Double J doesn't make a decision without calling 9 or 10 people and asking them what they "think". At any rate, Tim Jackson also takes the role of babysitter for any players like Cam that you may want to get autographs from. Now, some people probably think this is a good idea, but I ask you to look at how this effects the rest of the team. What happens is, you end up having the Auburn team and then a couple of rock stars who are treated differently, complete with entourages while the rest of the team is separate and have separate rules 90% of the time. It's not healthy for the team and it's not an effective way of uniting or creating a team atmosphere. If Auburn has a Gustapo, its name is Tim Jackson. Imagine going to work next week and your boss standing over your shoulder everywhere you went except the bathroom. Yeah...that's what Chizik is dealing with.
This is also the reason why I am not in favor of Auburn hiring Bobby Petrino and trying to keep Van Gorder or other coaches they like. If Auburn wants to take its football program to the place LSU and Alabama are in currently, they have to get a coach who will kick Tim Jackson off of the sidelines and run his program the way he sees fit. Auburn has had 3 coaches in its history that did this and they are our most successful coaches. Shug, Dye and Tuberville all told the powers that be where they could go. Tuberville, of course eventually couldn't fight it anymore and wore himself thin (remember Jimmy Raines) ....Enter Gene Chizik and the Gustapo. Now we're seeing Gene Chizik run out of steam and what it looks like we're going to get is another puppet of the powers that be running our beloved program. It's not going to work and it will never work until we get a coach that kicks these folks off the sidelines and takes control of the program.
This is why I believe we will not go out and get a big time hire and why we didn't go get one when we hired Chizik. In my opinion and I will state that this is just my opinion so as to not try and start rumors or whatever, this is why we will hire Bobby Petrino and announce it after the AL game. I hate it. I think it stinks. It frustrates the heck out of me, but I believe Petrino will be our next coach. Here's to hoping I'm wrong. Cheers.http://www.aufamily.com/forums/topic/126465-new-coaches-merged-all-new-coach-topics/page__st__855

That second quote up there gets about as close to an insider take as you will see anywhere. It's also why I think Auburn will make another bad hire when they fire Chizik instead of loading a truck up with money and driving it to a big time, big name coaches house.

Driskell appears to be incapable of winning a football game on his own or even leading them back with his arm. Call it "Alex Smith" syndrome. Dude has to rely on his defense to win games and then simply hand it off and not throw picks

Fishers wife went to Auburn and he was also a finalist in 08. He has some association with auburn boosters as well. He's also one of the best recruiters in the country. More rumors, but apparently a lot of fsu people are unhappy with him, including the administration. Makes sense, except i don't think he's very good coach.I like Malzahn better. I think Malzahn would be a soft hire. Great offensive mind, but not experienced as a head coach.
Petrino would succeed, but comes with some baggage. Alot of people would be turned off by him in the community. Still, he would win. Probably bail for some reason.
Jimbo can recruit, was a coordinator for a long time in the SEC. Not a bad option either, especially if FSU ends up winning out and going to the BCS. That would increase his stock. No one else impresses me in the ACC outside of Beamer.
Pac-12 doesn't impress me outside of Kelly who would only leave Oregon for the NFL or an elite place like a Texas.

Not sure what you mean here. Auburn is the pinnacle of suck, nowhere to go but up, imho. The question is how high? Or will it be one of those dreaded runs of mediocrity? Alabama Football is the unquestioned gold standard of college athletics right now which makes it amazing that Auburn has held its own in recruiting for the last 3 years. There is a ton of talent and another amazing class coming in (if it can be salvaged). No reason they can't win 8 or more games next year with the right guidance from a new HC
There are also new rumors out there that AU is under investigation again, so that may factor in if true.

I disagree about Malzahn. He left and you see what the result is. He should, frankly, be credited with coaching the team while on the plains. Cheezit has apparently been nothing but a figurehead administrator since he's been here. Also, Arky St is 5-3 with 2 of those losses against big time FBS teams. His team dropped 30 on Oregon, more than anybody else has scored on them all year. Plus, dude is cerebral and always evolving while being an incredibly strong recruiter
But, as I've said repeatedly, I just don't expect this Auburn administration to make a smart hire unless they prove they're serious by firing the AD.
Strong is a legit possibility but I doubt Gundy would leave, especially considering T Boone would make sure he gets paid.

Arkansas isn't even in a conversation between the three
Tennessee may be slightly better, but only because they don't have a major competitor in their state (LOL Vandy)
But Auburn has more $ and far more fertile recruiting grounds.
Facilities are a wash (Auburn has much better practice/weight/Locker room facilities while Tenn has a bigger stadium)

Auburn is also more broken and has a less forgiving fanbase. So I suppose overall its Tennessee. (Although, believe it or not, AU probably has more talent on their team, despite the record...At least according to the last 3 recruiting classes)
Loved seeing Auburn people leave the stadium at halftime again. They're smart and realize what kind of message it sends.

Agree on the arkansas part. Would NOT want that job. I said on the rant that Auburn was the best available job. Only downside is Saban's dynasty in the state.

Will Collier just destroyed Auburn in this article, and rightfully so. The meat of it lies below, but the whole thing is at the link. Somebody Finally had the cojones to say these things in print.
http://auburn.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1435124
Auburn is suffering from a failure of leadership at every level. President Jay Gogue continues to dither, offering only an anodyne press release and acting as if he'd rather just muddle through until his own retirement with as little actual effort as possible. Gogue's well-known dislike for firing subordinates and unwillingness to make difficult decisions (http://www.theplainsman.com/view/full_story/17622449/article-President-Gogue-rejects-proposed-provost-applicants-?instance=home_news_lead_story) is harming both the athletic department and the university as a whole.Gogue and his predecessors failed to reform the athletic department when they had the opportunity. Too many people in power at Auburn still wish the department could be what it was in the 1970's: A sleepy office that prints tickets, books travel and provides cushy sinecures for old buddies and former teammates.
A prime example is Jay Jacobs, who never had any business being athletic director. Jacobs was chosen over the vastly more qualified Dan Radakovich (who was later hired by Georgia Tech and more recently Clemson) and Greg McGarity (now athletic director at Georgia) and Scott Etheridge, who had a business background that puts Jacobs' time in Auburn's ticket and fundraising operations to shame. There's a big difference between doing business in a competitive marketplace and just cashing priority "donation" checks.
In any sane organization, Jacobs would have finished a distant fourth out of that group. In Auburn's case, Jacobs parlayed personal relationships and fear of change within the department (and myriad would-be Jerry Joneses among Auburn's power brokers) into a job that he proceeded to run into the ground.
A perhaps even more perfect example is Jacobs' longtime co-worker and BFF Tim Jackson, who ran the AU ticket office for many years in which that office earned a reputation for incompetence and poor customer relations. By all accounts, the attitude of that office was a reflection of its leadership. For reasons few can justify, Jacobs elevated Jackson from a position where he was already doing a poor job into one where he could do actual damage. Jackson, who deems himself Auburn's "general manager" for football, participates in interviews for coaching positions (notably including the one when Chizik was hired) and exerts authority over player discipline and other matters that are the proper purview of the head coach. Jackson is also widely believed to be responsible for the abrupt departures of both current Florida head coach Will Muschamp and David Marsh, the most successful college coach in the history of the state of Alabama.
For all the ire directed at Jacobs and Jackson, though, they're just the most public examples of the overall long-simmering dysfunction in the Auburn athletic department. Until and unless the university's leadership starts treating that department like what it is -- a $100 million business and the public face of the university for most of the country -- we'll see fiascoes like this continuing to happen in every sport.

I think Florida and LSU adjusted well in the 2nd. Basically they let the d-lines dominate and played tighter coverages. Bama's defense in the secondary isn't quite as good as Florida, LSU, and even Georgia.

There are certain things a defense must have/do well to stop/slow down the spread.
Manage your depth - Make sure you have an efficient substitution system so that you can rotate guys without getting tired or being caught with your pants down.(penalties/missed assignments etc)
Conditioning - Conditioning, conditioning, conditioning :lol
Athletic linebackers - ..Who can cover in space. If you don't have em' you better recruit a couple
Outside pressure - Gotta bring some heat and keep ol' Johnny inside the hash marks and under pressure. Rather have him scampering around in the middle than on the outside where he can tear off big chunks with his feet when the play breaks down
Physical corners - ..Who can play bump and run, knocking receivers off their lines and allowing the pressure to get to the QB. Timing is important in Spread schemes where short passes are often utilized
DL - At least one good one who can get in the backfield with some regularity
Aggy OL is underrated and they run it well, so if you only focus on Manziel then they'll tear you up on the ground. I don't envy SEC DC's :lol
UF and LSU figured it out, I imagine others can too. It will have to be a perfect storm, per par, for Aggy to get through unscathed to Atlanta next year.
Our schedule is very favorable for a run next year. If we can get Joeckel, Matthews, and Moore all back we have a great shot at Atlanta.

As it will for everyone. Alabama and UGA certainly didn't get their unscathed this season.
A&M will have some question marks next year and a lot rides on who leaves for the NFL but every team will go through this.
The question of "how to stop johnny manziel?" has been asked since high school and nobody has come up with an answer. Florida didn't come up with an answer. That was a freshman taking his first snap in the biggest game of A&M's history against arguably the best defense in the nation. If that game is played next week, it would be a totally different ball game. LSU played Johnny the best this season in the 2nd half but Johnny was two missed field goals away from winning that game as well. Point is, even though he played bad against LSU, he still put us in position to win the game. There is no gameplan you can come up with to stop Manziel, but if he starts turning the ball over and making reckless plays then he can certainly stop himself and that is something he hasn't perfected yet.

The 2012 Texas A&M team does not represent the SEC's first go-round trying to stop a spread offense. The SEC struggled against Urban Meyer at Florida for several years. If you have the players, you can run the scheme and be effective. It's not as though A&M went from having some plodding offense to putting up these numbers. Last year I think A&M was #7 in the country in total offense; they just sucked in translating yards into points and turned the ball over like crazy, sort of like Arky this year.
I think the key to slowing down Manziel will be to force him to make quick decisions. With the present O-Line, that has been tough to do, because of so many plays where he can stand in the pocket for seven seconds, and then run around for another seven or eight trying to make something happen. If, as expected, a couple of those guys go to the NFL, then Manziel's massive margin for error gets reduced to something more typical for an SEC QB. He's a great athlete and improviser, and has made strides in decision-making, but it remains to be seen as he develops whether he'll make quick, good decisions that the elite defenses will force him to make to be effective. Michael Vick's best year at VT was his freshman year.
I caution aggy against extrapolating the 2012 season into some kind of impending SEC dominance. LSU and Florida will be better on offense next year. Alabama isn't going anywhere.

Wouldn't have made a difference. Florida took away his strengths by keeping him in the pocket and playing tighter coverages. Plus, their d-line was stout as well. A&M's offense played well in the first half and got shut down in the second half just like the LSU game and even similar to the Bama game so the whole extra week argument goes out the window. I don't think the extra week would have made a difference. Plus, Florida was playing a young QB as well.

Manziel is a completely different player then he was against UF. A&M had open receivers all over the field against Florida but had a freshman reluctant to pass the ball and take chances. That isn't the case anymore. I said "It would be a totally different ball-game" if we played them next week. That doesn't mean we'd beat them but they wouldn't hold Manziel and our offense to 17 pts again either. That I know.
People went back to that Florida game all season long for some special recipe to stop Johnny and it hasn't worked all season. Why? Because he's a totally different player who has improved week by week. If you go look at him scrambling against Florida he wasn't even looking upfield for open recdeivers, he was dead-set on running the ball. Now, he is creating time and finding receivers off the scramble drill first, and running if nothing is there second.

I think the second half against Alabama represents what the A&M offense playing at its present level would accomplish against an elite SEC defense that has seen it before. That would be more or less the "average" of A&M's output in the first vs. second halves against Florida.

So A&M's 17-point performance against UF would instead be somwhere in the range 20 +/- 4, and Florida might try to do something with the ball in the fourth rather than milking the clock knowing that A&M was stymied. Doesn't sound like a "totally different ballgame" but rather a "remarkably similar ballgame."

I didn't say that, that's what you said. but for somebody who is so confident that we wouldn't beat them if we played them again, you just said it would be an even half.
I think we would score 24+ pts if we played them again. We just put up 29 on Alabama and FSU just put up 26 on UF. So I don't see how we wouldn't put up a similar number considering our offense has grown immensely from game 1 to now.

We're probably just parsing semantics on the "different ballgame" at this point. A&M might beat Florida if they played again, but the game would look like a typical grind-it-out SEC game rather than the Tecmo Bowl performances the A&M offense puts up against also-rans. The 29 against Alabama includes 20 in the first quarter, i.e. the fast start I'm asserting won't happen when elite defenses see A&M for a second time. The 26 FSU scored includes a meaningless touchdown on the last play when UF was playing prevent to run the clock out.
I think you'd see another close game where the winner scores 20-24 points.
DesignatedT

When you said "It wouldn't have made a difference" I was assuming you meant the final outcome.
When I say it would be a different game, I didn't necessarily mean we would put up video game numbers on that defense because it's the best in the nation IMO. What I'm talking about is the fact that we had 0 first downs in the third quarter of that game and 3 first downs in the whole 2nd half. What this did was tire out our defense resulting in Florida winning the game. I do believe we would be able to move the ball and gain yards if we played them again (not week 1) making it a different game. Who knows if that would result in a bunch of points but it would definitely keep our defense from tiring out. It would be more of a fast paced game because Florida wouldn't be able to establish such a dominant run game and time of possession. I still think it would be a close game but we were total shit that 2nd half and a lot of that had to do with their defense but also the fact that we had a freshman QB playing his first ever game. The adjustments they made in the 2nd half of that game wouldn't have the same result tomorrow then it did then is my whole point.

Tough loss but a great game. It's easy to say now why not spike the ball but honestly I have no problem taking a shot at the end zone first. Just ended up getting batted at the line. You can't really exploit a teams secondary in the red-zone so I understand the view of not spiking and not letting the defense get set and hopefully catching somebody off guard or missing an assignment. Definitely a tough break though.

Just glad that Malzahn is putting in his own people. I'm willing to lose out on guys so that he can own this team and get his own kids. Will be interesting to see how he and the new DC can rebound on the recruiting trail

Probably hurts our DL the most. I hope Grantham is able to get someone in there to get NFL talent to commit like him. UGA may never win another NC but they are a Nfl factory and I'd like to see that continue.

“Texas A&M is the model. If anybody is scared of Texas A&M, it’s Alabama,” Tillman said.
“Nick Saban is scared to death. Because now Kevin Sumlin not only has a system that has been proven to work as a counterpunch at lesser programs like the University of Houston, where you can win 12 (with) the scheme (and) the pace of the game. Now he’s got the Jimmys and the Joes that look just like Alabama’s guys getting off the bus.
“I spoke with (Sumlin) in the preseason, I said, ‘Coach, if you don’t screw this up, you’re gonna have something special.’ (A&M’s success in 2012) was not a surprise to me. A proven system with the type of caliber athletes that can make a difference, and the guy who’s concerned about it more than anybody else is Nick Saban. You’ve got a new player on the block in the West, and it’s A&M.”

With Auburn securing 5* De Carl Lawson, 5* Montravius Adams (a former commit) seems to have gravitated back toward the Plains with mods on Climpsun, Georgia, and Auburn rivals sites all reporting that Auburn has emerged as the leader. Throw in Reuben Foster who is still probably a 50/50 shot as well as Mackensie Alexander (who didn't take his remaining OV after visiting the Plains) and the Tigers may end up with 4 of the best defensive players in the nation
Even if none of those guys sign, Malzahn and staff have been incredible. A full year of recruiting should do wonders.
I'm just hoping they can develop these kids as well as they're recruiting them.
Pretty stoked about the future

Although I don't know much about the Freeze staff, I do know they run an exciting offense and made a lot of headway last year. Considering the class MSU had, as well as the rest of the west (even Arky finished strong), it doesn't strike me as being too strange. Lots of kids just wanna play in the SEC. UK/Mizzou/Arky will be the only teams likely outside the top25 in the final Rivals rankings. (with Arky at 26 and UK at 31...lol Mizzou at 48)
I need hard evidence before I even think about accusing OM of cheating.

If you need to rely on your coach prancing around in a ring next to half naked men to win recruits (which you don't), then your program is in trouble (which it isn't).
A little dignity and class (and a stellar season behind a heisman trophy winner) is an easy starting point to sell recruits, not to mention the academic reputation of Aggieland.
That shit above is devoid of dignity or class, and stoops down to a level far below where a leader of a big-time program should be, imo.
Justify it however you want, but I guarantee you not one kid will commit because of that jackassery

It's just fun and games, ain't nobody really taking this shit seriously :lol However, stunts like this only add to Sumlin's general likeability factor. No, him being an honorary WWE champion won't directly land us commits, but it's a fun talking point that recruits will remember.
