Thinking outside the box. Couldn't Holt, Pop, etc argue with Stern and Boys? League can come down, Spurs could sue league, bring it to arbitration?
Especially if the sanctions are "substantial"

stern suspending pop makes no fkn sense, stern will come out losing since pop doesnt give a shit and would probably enjoy spending the suspension marinating his scrotum in wine and delivering a casket to the commissioner...fck him

Can't blame them for supporting the guy who signs their checks. Meanwhile, the great majority of writers and talking heads not employed by David Stern are taking Pop's side in this.

Did any of you in the DFW area listen to the Musers on the 1310 about this subject? I heard them promote the segment, but wasn't able to hear it. What did Junior say? I know he's a Spurs fan so I'm interested in his take

It's tough to come up with something that doesn't actually harm the Spurs that will also be regarded as "substantial sanctions" by any serious observer.

Apparently, according to Bayless and Smith, Pop sent our players home as a way of 'getting back at Stern and the NBA for an unfair schedule', not because he actually wanted to rest them.
It's also funny that everyone is saying that Pop should've rested them for the Magic game so that they would be able to play in the Heat game. Talk about marginalizing the Magic organization.....

:lol The sponsors make purchases for more than one game. Plus, 1) The ratings were probably as high or higher than they would have been without the controversy 2) The controversy pushed the NBA to the headlines and will probably result in better ratings in the future
The point is the NBA didn't lose any money because this won't affect TV negotiations. TNT didn't lose any money because the ads were already sold. And with the way things played out, TNT and the sponsors will probably be better off because this has got people talking about the NBA ... which usually doesn't happen until after the Super Bowl.

Pop gave a big EFF YOU to the league by doing this in a nationally televised against the defending champs. If he had done the same thing the night before in Orlando, then Stern says nothing. This is an aging dictator asserting his power.

The arguments are dumb. I have a simple solution for improving Stern's product: drop 15 games during the regular season and get rid of back-to-back games. It is absolutely absurd the number of games they play and we see players take games off all the time. They might play in the game, but they do not give 100%. Say what you will but Pop gets the most out of his players every night for reasons like last night. He knows how to coach.
One other thing. I bet not one damn Miami fan went to the game last night to watch the Spurs. They went to see Lebron dunk. The only disappointed fans would have been Spurs fans at the game, until they had a close game that the Spurs almost won.

How anyone can think any money was lost is beyond me. They had a good ratings share for the time slot.
Stern doesn't care about the fans, but he cares about the image and he felt pre game that this sort of thing will look bad for image. That apology to fans was just bS posturing all in the name of image. In the end we ended up with a far more entertaining game than we would have otherwise. They didn't break any rule.
A law has to exist before it can be broken. If Stern wants to try to change the rulings, have at it. But him doing anything against the Spurs would be completely unjustified, and if he tries, I would love to see them try to contest it.

They should have played. They had a day off on Tuesday and had a short flight from Orlando. They are getting paid millions. What would our bosses think if we told them we were too tired to work since we worked 4 days in a row? I know the bosses were the ones who made the decision but the question is still the same.

I understand acting overly haughty over minor indiscretions, I've made a career and monthly payments on a gleaming 2008 Toyota Corolla out of it, so Stern's heavy-handed response to Popovich's move rings true. After a few weeks of sitting on the sidelines and hand-stitching the bunting to be draped as he sets to his victory tour, Stern needlessly moved in to protect the honor of Absolutely No One in response to a game that would be forgotten in a matter of days even if Tim Duncan tipped in a game-winner off of a Tony Parker miss.

Although it's not as good as Woj's article, Dwyer's was also a pretty good read. I think it's linked on Woj's.
So does anyone know what Hollinger had to say?
Note: I don't really agree with Dwyer calling the game one-sided though. Spurs bench kept it really close and probably could've won.

Jeff McDonald @JMcDonald_SAEN (https://twitter.com/JMcDonald_SAEN) The Spurs, as well as any team, know how difficult a playoff series in Memphis can be. Beating MIA doesn't help as much as beating MEM. \

I guess you don't think the NHL is a major sport.
Honestly, the NHL has far less national appeal to work with. NBA superstars transcend the national landscape, Stern had WAY more than his fair share of them post-Jordan, and has repeatedly shown that he has no idea to market a player/team that won't go out of their way to market themselves. The NHL has to do a LOT more work to make people tune-in in the first place. The NFL has got it figured out. Baseball learned from it's big strike. Stern is just making repeatedly inane decisions that torpedo the sports reputation because his ego won't ever let him admit to making an error. That isn't to say that Bettman is good, but he's got a sport that has been on the decline. The NBA is succeeding in SPITE of what Stern does and he still manages to nearly sabotage it at every turn.

This one from the old angry writer, Charley Rosen - http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2012/11/30/rosen-popovich-v-stern-who-wears-the-dunce-cap/ , who too takes Pop's side.
Indeed, Stern has no business deciding who a coach chooses to play and not play. And what does Stern do now?
Follow through and fine Pop and/or the Spurs organization?
Suspend Popovich?
However, no matter how substantial the expected sanctions might be, there’s no way that Stern will intimidate Pop and prevent the best coach in the league from reprising this same move when he feels it will be in the best interest of his ball club.
And what if San Antonio had won the game?
Perhaps Stern would have applied his substantial sanctions to the Heat.

The only thing I'm concerned about is the Spurs getting screwed on calls in the playoffs . . . but it's not like we haven't seen that before.
What can he really do though? It's not like he can doc the Spurs draft picks or suspend the big three for five games each. He's ignorant enough that we probably shouldn't rule out Pop being suspended, but most likely, we're looking at a fine ranging from $100K-250K, I'd imagine.
The question is, will the fine be legit? Unless Wojnarowski somehow comes up with the details, it's all but certain we'll never know, but I honestly think it's a possibility they announce that but don't actually fine them. There's two reasons why they might do this: 1) They have no grounds for doing this, so if the Spurs wanted this to turn even uglier, they could sue the league. 2) Isn't Stern close with Holt?
RuffnReadyOzStyle

Stern has lost it.
It's an 82 game season and Pop can manage his roster any way he sees fit. I'm surprised more teams aren't strategically resting players as the Spurs have done over the past few years.
Stern threatens to sanction the Spurs for doing something clever that will benefit their team, but won't do anything about the rampant tanking for draft picks?!? Double standard, much?

“And they checked out the next earliest flight, it was commercial. We didn’t purposely go Southwest the next day to let everyone know we weren’t going to play. The plan was supposed to be getting back the night before so we could have more rest. Obviously it didn’t work out the way we wanted to.
