If the Ravens can actually gameplan for Kaepernick then they've got a good chance IMO.

Rooting for Niners. Ravens have a couple FA I'd like to see come to Indy and being Super Bowl winners will both drive the price up and make them likely to stay in Baltimore. But in general I don't particularly care. First Super Bowl in a while I can watch without rooting for a particular team to lose.

So now in this Harbaugh Bowl, the Niners are the only ones standing between the Lombardi and the Ray Lewis-powered freight train of destiny with probably the whole world on its side. Awesome. "Elite QB" purists are already fucked. Flacco and Kaepernick were widely considered fringe top 10 QBs before the playoffs, and probably still are. Rodgers, Manning, Brees, Roethlisberger, and Brady are the top 5 QBs

I suppose you can call me one of the "Elite QB" purists. Flacco has the tools and may now finally be adding the mental aspect to join those ranks, while Kap has a high ceiling and the apparent intangibles required to eventually add himself to the mix as well.

I don't disagree with your top 5, but whichever of these QB's wins this game will have an argument to be a solid top 10 with potential to go higher if they add another stellar year/deep playoff run or two

Maybe we're just seeing 2 guys who will ultimately be top 5 striking while the team that surrounds them is hot?

I don't know if I agree with Ghazi's argument..

Eli and Big Ben weren't considered elite QBs until their teams won a ring, maybe not even until their 2nd SBs, tbh..based on talent and regular season performance, neither guy would be considered top 5..

So, let's say Flacco has another great game and wins the SB, is it a stretch to claim he's an elite QB?..

I think you'd have to. His past playoff failures can be attributed to youth--and I've been saying for years how awful Cam Cameron was as an OC. Look what happens when you take the handcuffs off him.

If he indeed plays another great game and wins the SB, his SB path would look like this:

1. Andrew Luck and the Colts--horrible team, but he outshined the future GOAT
2. Peyton Manning--outshines the Sheriff in 0-degree weather on the road
3. Tom Brady--outplayed a 3x SB champion in his backyard in swirling winds.
4. Beating the 49ers defense.

Throw in 9 total playoff wins and that's quite a resume since 2008.

Big Ben is definitely a top 5-6 QB now, but he absolutely was NOT during the first Super Bowl.

I've never ever felt like Manning was an "elite" QB

I don't buy the "elite QB" stuff. What the hell is the definition of an elite QB anyway? Even if Flacco or Kap wins it all this year, no way can they be considered top 5 QBs. so whats the definition of elite? top 10? Really? Just being in the top 1/3 of QBs in the NFL? Then Matt Ryan has to be considered elite too..

Every team that wins a Super Bowl usually has its own different formula. There's no one set formula.

There's no need to break down this game. Generic ass opinion, but if the Niners simply execute they win. They have one of the most ridiculously stacked rosters in NFL history. Everybody knows it, but some had their questions about QB. Kap has answered those questions. Ravens shot in this game is for some good fortune in the turnover department and execution errors by the Niners. Quite frankly they're here because the Broncos and Pats failed to execute, not because they were the clearly better team. Niners are here because they executed and have the best team/talent in football, not because their opponents fucked up. There was NOTHING the Packers could do to stop the Niners offense with their roster, and the Falcons put up about as good a fight as they could and still lost on their home field.

Ray of Light was one of the greatest skits I've seen. My friends and I still watch it about once a month.

As to the recent clip, whatever. I don't think there's anything absurd about the emotion he's been showing this month. The only real shame is that all this Lewis talk is masking the fact that it's probably the last ride for other players like Birk and Moss. Not to mention there's probably about three dozen or so players for whom this will be their only chance to play in this game.

I'm not a Ray hater by any means. I like the guy and just enjoyed those skits, especially Ray of Light.

As for the emotion, I think it's genuine with a dash of showmanship for the cameras. AFAIK, he's always been like that and the media just chooses to focus on it more than they do on other things which is why I think he gets such a negative rap.

Do I find some of it corny and cliche' ridden? Sure. But he is who he is so whatever.

It's not unique but it's more common. As a soccer fan you know that Ronaldo is one of the kings of playing the cameras but it's not that common in that sport or other sports that aren't so popular in the US. I think it has to do with the fact that there is less "showmanship" (I don't know if this is the right word but is the best one I can come up now to try to describe it) surrounding sports outside the US. For example, there are no cool individual introductions or big ass screens showing clips of the players before each match and things like that. You guys are the masters of Showmanship, which is not a bad thing, imho. It makes it more entertaning and helps sell the product better. It has its downfalls like some players being too conscious of the cameras and overplaying some shit (lol Pierce going out on a wheelchair) but even these things are funny and great for the spectators so I prefer it this way all day, tbh. I would love for soccer to be more like American sports in this sense.

Maybe not the most appropriate place to put this, but here's the video of Lewis' locker room speech after last year's loss to the Patriots. For people who think Lewis is a phony who only acts the way he does because the national media is around, it seems like he has things in perspective.

No teams looks better coming off the bus than the Niners.

Keep in mind they got here without Manningham and Hunter, their second receiver/running back. Hunter is a stud!

It will take a bad day for the Niners (stupid penalties, turnovers, poor special team play) for the Ravens to win this. Yep, that could happen but I doubt it.

The NFC has far more quality teams than the AFC, so it takes a better team to win that conference.

I believe that Ray Lewis cheated. I believe that to be true based on circumstantial evidence, his age, his overcompetitiveness, the history of that specific injury, and the fact that his "recovery" made my shit detector start vibrating like a chainsaw.

Great Simmons article. It's amazing that a 37 year old came back from a 6 month injury in only 2, and nobody in the media had the balls to question it.

I've been as wrong about the playoffs as possible so far this year, but I see San Fran winning by 10-14 points if the refs don't takeover the game (which they might since the Ravens are getting treatment for Lewis' retirement similar to the treatment Pittsburgh got in 2005 for Bettis' retirement). The wop sensation has had three great games so far against 3 horrible secondaries and will need to duplicate that performance this week. San Fran's secondary is overrated but it isn't gonna provide the Marquice Cole vs. Anquan Boldin or anyone-in-Denver's-secondary vs. Torrey Smith match-up Flacco can milk all day. Before Talib's injury Flacco looked awful against New England and the lack of injuries San Fran gets in its secondary is uncanny.

Also, Ray Lewis deciding not to do his intro dance seems completely insignificant but seeing players do stuff out of character during the playoffs never means anything good. When Wes Welker held a press conference to make fun of Rex Ryan in 2010, it might have been funny but it was out of character and it meant the Jets' shit talk was getting to New England. Lewis deciding not to do his dance so he can "come out with his team" tells me the media's sudden criticism of his god bullshit/the PED speculation has gotten to him.

Ray Lewis should be sitting in a prison cell right now along with Kobe Bryant. while in there they could relate pretty well to one another about "praising and worshiping God" anytime a camera or a group of people are around all the while being unfaithful to their significant other and doing other things that are opposite of what they preach.

No teams looks better coming off the bus than the Niners.

Keep in mind they got here without Manningham and Hunter, their second receiver/running back. Hunter is a stud!

:lol are you seriously trying to play with injury card for San Fran with the injuries they've had compared to Baltimore?

Justin Smith and Sopoaga have missed 2 games a piece. That's it. Their other 9 starters on D have started every game and been completely healthy. 11 starters on a defense + the nickel corner missing only 4 games combined the entire season is unheard of. Justin Smith is the only player on SF's D who's playing with an injury right now iirc. Compare that to all the defensive players (Ellerbe, Arthur Jones, McPhee, Kruger) who were unknowns coming into the season and stepped up for Baltimore while they dealt with injuries all over their defense.

Meanwhile San Fran's offense's luck with injuries hasn't been much worse. Their best running back, best receiver, and best tight end started every game. All 5 of their starters on the O-line started every game. Mario Manningham was their only noticeable injury on offense and he's a complementary receiver who's easily replaced by giving Moss/Walker more snaps. If you actually look at the injuries San Fran has had, their depth has been tested less than the depth of pretty much every other team.

Great Simmons article. It's amazing that a 37 year old came back from a 6 month injury in only 2, and nobody in the media had the balls to question it.

Fuck this phony cheating murderer. Niners 38 Ravens 17

I really don't see anything weird about him coming back. I has a huge brace on his arm for one thing. So it's clear he's not really healed so much as he's just regained some basic mobility. He also knew he was retiring, which meant he was going to get back on the field no matter what state his arm was in. I doubt the doctors would have cleared him if he was supposed to be back next year.

I see playing with a recovering triceps as I would playing with a broken leg or a torn acl. You can do it, but the pain is terrible. It also increases the risk of long-term damage, but I doubt Lewis cares about that.

Does this mean he didn't take some illegal substance to help him get to this point? Not at all. He may well have, and if he did and they found proof, I'd be the first person to want him banned from the game. I don't want that crap hanging over the Ravens' heads. But this isn't even circumstantial evidence. It's just "It seems too convenient..." kinda stuff which shouldn't be used as the basis for decisions. I mean seriously, Justin Smith is probably in worse shape right now (his partial tear hasn't been repaired and he hasn't had two months of no football to heal), and he's not wearing a brace anywhere near as bulky as the one Lewis uses.

superbowl should be played in the biggest stadium year in year out tbh. It is the biggest single day sporting event in the world and only around 70k will actually be at the game

stupid troll post. you do realize why every major sporting event college and pro wants to play in NOLA right? unlike any other place in the entire country NOLA is the best and most convenient place for fan experience. the Dome is only a few short blocks away from everything major downtown and all of the hotels. also NOLA (along with Las Vegas) are the only two cities in the country where it is completely legal 365 days a year to walk around with open containers. there is no other city that has the setup that NOLA has for sporting events. Las Vegas is the only other place that could compete if they built a 70,000+ seat stadium.

your attendance talk is ridiculous as well. 70,000 is the NFL average and anything larger than 80,000 makes for a shitty fan experience. Cowboys stadium is the largest and in that stadium at least 30,000 fans are watching the game on the big screen and can't even see the players. in recent years -

XXXV - Tampa - 71,921
XXXVI - New Orleans - 72,922
XXXVII - San Diego - 67,603
XXXVIII - Houston, 71,525
XXXIX - Jacksonville - 78,125
XL - Detroit - 68,206
XLI - Miami - 74,512
XLII - Glendale (AZ) - 71,101
XLIII - Tampa - 70,774
XLIV - Miami - 74,059
XLV - Arlington, Texas - 103,219

That's an interesting take for sure. You could be right about this talk getting into Lewis' head. I think it's also possible that he really does want to run out with his team one last time. My guess is he doesn't want to go out and be a distraction and motivation for San Francisco by dancing around like he's at home. I could totally see him being silent and tactical for most of the game, actually. I can see that being the case with most of the Ravens. It would be interesting if the team does this, because that's more Flacco's persona.

That seems like a ramble up there. I guess I'm trying to say that Lewis may know that the game's not really going to be won or lost based on what he's doing, and so he doesn't want to act like a star and just wants to do his job (to go along for the ride, as he said). He has plenty of time to be a media hype man after today, but he only has one shot to go out a champion.

Wow, what a fucking terrible playcall by John.... may have just handed the game back to the Niners....

The 9ers remind me of the mid-00s Ravens. Good defense, but it was too easy to get into their heads.

49ers bailout out by the Ravens playcalling.

Darth_Pelican
02-03-2013, 07:38 PM
STUPID CALL. You're dominating the game, and you risk a play that gives momentum back to SF

Yeah, why go for feast or famine plays when you're up and have all the momentum? It's retarded.

I only understand the play call because if it works and leads to a Baltimore touchdown, San Fran is completely deflated and never recovers.

Chris

another draw, turribly conservative

Niners just handed the momentum right back...

:lol Jim Harbaugh
:lol Overconservative, shit playcalling
:lol Hyped as being a "fiery leader" when he really just carries on like a two-year-old

Chinook

Biggest half-time adjustment for SanFran is to get Kaep's head back in the game. I hope the Ravens make their adjustments, too. It's always hard for the leading team to know what they need to fix.

DUNCANownsKOBE
02-03-2013, 07:41 PM
And just like that San Fran hands the momentum back with another 3 and out.

Jim needs to evaluate where Kaepernick is at mentally at the half. The way he's playing Smith deserves a shot.

And if Harbaugh thinks that might not be possible, give Smith a chance.

It could work out if they did that. But that's extremely risky.

That Taco Bell commercial was so so horrible... so horrible. dear God.

Anyway, Niners simply aren't executing and that fluky fumble was really unfortunate. I hope we are aggressive if we get the ball back before the end of the 2nd half.
