Awesome turn of events for the Rangers. Just when it seemed we were down and out, with our consistent losses, Oakland's hot streak, injuries, and the inevitable suspension of Nelly, we're looking up...Keep rolling and get into the playoffs. We'll turn it up.

gotta keep utilizing small ball. the team has always been better when they incorporate more small ball strategies. thats how they got to the WS in 2010, and used it quite effectively in 2011 to get back to the WS when power hitting was struggling.
when healthy, this pitching staff is levels better than the pitching staffs in either of those years. Marching Darvish, Garza, and Holland out to the mound always gives me a good feeling about their chance to win. And while they have had their ups and downs, Ogando and Perez both have really been no slouch, with sub 4.00 ERAs on the season.

I felt no choice but to stop by and compliment your analysis, which is truly a work of art, an american treasure. As the sun shines through the eternal darkness, into the lowest cavern, that's what i think of when I come home from a long day and read one of your takes.
It was 300 years ago today, that Euler ushered in the age of Romanticism with the initial discovery of the function with respect to the x variable, and when I think of Philip, I think of Euler. This guy, has got it all

Agreed...small ball has always been our gig to get wins. I think being forced to go back to small ball with Nelly out will be huge, and when Nelly gets back, we can continue the strategy but still have that power in our back pocket. This could be a blessing in disguise.

Anybody else been impressed as hell with Craig Gentry as of late? Dude has a HUGE baseball IQ. Get on base, steal, score. Lately, he's always seemed to know exactly what to do in each situation.
Chris
08-08-2013, 04:17 PM
Gentry had a great Spring Training and fizzled out the first half of the season while falling out of favor with Washington. His fielding is still pretty raw, but the natural speed and baseball IQ you mentioned is impressive.
Phillip
08-08-2013, 05:51 PM
I think Gentry was dealing with some injuries too, and ended up being put on the DL for a while.
I'm guessing that getting healthy has helped him considerably.

So the Rangers of submitted a claim for Alex Rios, with the Sox having 48 hours to decide. I like the pickup - it'll give us that power missing from Cruz.

Great pick up by the Rangers and appears it came pretty cheaply as well. Another aspect I like in Rios game is his ability to steal bases, he has 26 on the season. I think Rios bats 5th behind Beltre.

should be a fantastic pickup. solid OBP, doesn't strike out much, has moderate power, and good speed. seems like he should give production very similar to Kinsler.
murphy has been garbage all year, so either this ends up replacing him, or lighting a fire under his ass and hopefully getting some better production out of him
i would rather murph be backup, and start Gentry the majority of games. then that means you have Rios, Gentry, Martin, Andrus, and Kinsler (even though hes sometimes retarded) who are all very capable of making opponents pay with their good speed.

The Rangers hitting coach deserves a bonus. Everyone in the lineup is having disciplined ABs and working the pitcher regardless of the score. The other teams have been forced to go to their bullpens early even if their pitcher is having a quality start.

Ogando or Perez for the 4th starter in the postseason?
Ogando has been in a slump lately, but is capable of being a very solid starter (made an all star team as a starter). Perez has been on fire lately, but is young and still gaining experience.
Chris
08-14-2013, 08:38 PM
Perez definitely -Ogando's fastball is garbage and very hittable right now, and that was the only thing that made him an above average pitcher. Sure he can turn it around, but moving Perez could destroy his confidence.
TXstbobcat
08-14-2013, 11:14 PM
I would rather roll with Perez as the 4th starter in the postseason.

Neftali Feliz to return to the Rangers on Monday for the series against Oakland.
It really has been disappointing to not be able to see him pitch this season, or even last season for that fact.
It's a nice thought, that they could open next season with Darvish, Holland, Garza, Harrison, and Feliz as the starting pitching staff.

Don't forget about Martin Perez. I think Blackley has been serviceable, but he's an average LRP imo.
Feliz hasn't given up a run to this point in over 16 games in the minors! Thats impressive no matter the ballpark, so I'm excited to see him pitch as well.

Yeah, Perez has looked fantastic this year overall. If he plays well in the playoffs, there will be a tough decision to make next year. Someone is going to have to be benched/traded. Unless they try using 6 starters, which I highly doubt.
I didn't know that stat about Feliz. Kid is going to be a monster soon. Rangers will have 3 starters with ace level talent in Darvish, Holland, and Feliz, while Garza, Harrison, and Perez all have #2 starter talent. The future is definitely bright for this team.

Now I'm definitely not suggesting suicide or anything like that, but if Grant Balfour were to ever investigate the potential repercussions of ending his existence in a concise manner, I wouldn't necessarily object to it.
It's not just him, but any 'tough guy' pitcher who has the ball in their hand, while the batter is helpless at the plate, is a grade A douche. Especially in the American League when you don't even get to bat or if you do get in a fight, it gets broken up within a matter of seconds.

At least the Rangers' crapout this year is early and not like the last game of the season. The Rangers had their chance in 2011 but steroid boy Nelson Cruz couldn't make a catch and that was that. They had a good run but fell short. Did the Rangers get a flag for the Wild Card last year? They used to have pennants for their division titles but got rid of those and put up stupid flags.

From Lone Star Ball (http://www.lonestarball.com/2013/9/24/4766116/remaining-schedules-for-a-l-wild-card-contenders)
If Texas and Tampa tie for the first Wild Card spot, the Wild Card game is played in Texas. If Texas and Cleveland tie for the first Wild Card spot, the Wild Card game is played in Cleveland.
If Texas and Tampa tie for the second Wild Card spot, a play-in game is played in Texas, with the winner playing in Cleveland in the Wild Card Game. If Texas and Cleveland tie for the second Wild Card spot, a play-in game is played in Cleveland, with the winner playing in Tampa in the Wild Card Game.
If all three teams tie, then there is a scenario where Team A hosts Team B on September 30, with the winner getting into the Wild Card Game. The loser then plays at Team C.
Cleveland gets to select whether they want to be Team A, B or C, and almost certainly would pick Team A. Tampa would then decide if they want to be Team B, meaning they'd get two chances to win one road game, or Team C, which would play at home but only gets one chance to win.

I was at the game and I was in shock when Profar hit that walk off homer. I did not think he would be the one that would save the Rangers. The crowd sucked ass tonight. Apparently, there were 26,000 people there tonight but I think they were being generous with the attendance count. I had never seen a walk off homerun at a baseball park until tonight. The ballpark teased us after the Rangers won it with the walk off by showing the bottom of the 9th of the Indians and Twins and of course the shitty Twins shat a turd and lost the game. I still hope the Indians lose at least once against the Twins. If you give me the choice of the season ending on Sunday or the possibility of a play in game to get the wild card game, I will take the play in game please.

If Perez gave up more than 8 hits and/or 4 runs I would yank him. It also depends if he's getting ahead in the count and locating his breaking balls. Perez is an innings eater but he's also a rookie so you never know what you're going to get with each start.
