He threw a lot of his teammates under the bus and basically ripped his entire team and I know a lot of Suns fans on RealGM criticized him for whining about players not giving it their all or caring about winning when he didn't seem to be either. I'm not going to say I follow Gortat super closely but he's going to want to be a main contributor on the team not just a cog in the machine. Personally I feel he is an upgrade offensively but is that what we really need? Spurs are already one of the best offensive teams in the league. Gortat has great athleticism and he is more physical than Tiago though. Personally I feel it's a wash, I think Splitter would excel in our system more than Gortat but who knows.

still, making a long term commitment to Splitter is a risky we'll likely have to take RIGHT NOW if a deal for a center doesn't go through. i like Splitter, and i know he's an asset, but the thought of giving him a 3-4 year deal making 8+ each year has me thinking we can do better. if we can keep the same level of play from a center for 1 more year without having to lock in, i'm all for it. especially if Tiago is expected to be making more than 7.7 million, in which case this deal saves us some cap room for this year too

So... Diaw's play against Lefake (ESPN's darling and best player in the world) plus his high BB IQ isn't something worth holding on to??? Yes, I'd hate giving up Splitter and a first for one year of Gortat. It'd be like giving up Green and a first for a year of Sefalosha. If Gortat had three years and $20 Million left on his deal, I'd be fine with trading Splitter for him straight up. But even if Gortat is a bit better than Splitter (and by almost all accounts outside of Spurs fans, he's not), it's not worth giving up a pick in such a strong draft. Hell, throw Jean-Charles in there instead.

I'm all for money-balling Splitter's contract into more production. I'm even good with upgrading from him. But it's not nearly as easy to do that as people seem to think. There are only a handful of bigs that can do what Splitter can making less than $10 Million. And besides Varejao, none of them would be enough of an upgrade on the court to warrant giving up a pick (and Varejao's injury history makes that trade very risky). Unless the team has a lot of confidence in Baynes, letting go of Splitter for anything short of a star big is foolish.

If by a couple million you mean 3.5 million then yes, yes we are. But both Tim and Tony are massively outperforming their contracts. This will probably be Tiago's only big NBA contract of his career, so it's totally understandable that he wants something in the ballpark of his market rate.

It was a GOOD STRATEGY. He did it in GS series and it was meant to play outside defense to stop the 3 ball. The ball just didn't bounce our way, is all.

Anyway, Diaw was excellent on LeBron and is why we "trusted" him in the game. Diaw and Leonard on LeBron was a great tactic and it worked for the whole series, basically.

If we do lose Diaw, we better get some better defensive legs and a bigger body in order to stop LeBron and the other athletic wings in the league.

My guess is that Tony would need to. With two bigs both capable of tolling to the basket, hitting the midrange shot, and posting up, I would think Pop would be designing plays around that to confuse the crap out of defenses. And when Tim was on the bench, Tony and Gortat could run some of the Tim/Tony sets.

Gortat is a very good p&r big. Where he is much better than splitter is his rebounding, that is why his scoring average would be higher than tiago's in my opinion. I think with TP his numbers could be pretty close to his 15/10 days with nash.

Or he could be another Jefferson - guy that puts up nice stats on a bad team. In any case, Gortat's defense has never impressed me. Splitter's soft but at least he defends well in the Spurs system.
