IMO, the fact that the Spurs guaranteed Bonner's salary early on is the indication they were not going to use the cap. That turned Bonner's contract into a juicy expiring deal, which they could use now or even later in the season.
For what though? I mean are we going to package multiple players for someone during the season?

It's a $4m expiring + a pick or two and you're looking at a $6m or so player. Don't forget a big draft is coming, and plenty of teams will be tanking and willing to clear cap space
