Have you ever overclocked before? Here is a great guide for doing it on Haswell chips.

So much easier now that you can do all this shit in BIOS vs using jumpers and shit. I remember how fucking much I paid for the first Athlon board that could do everything in BIOS with no jumpers back when Atlons were monster CPUs and Intel was garbage. Jumpers fucking sucked. :lol

witcher 3????

Best graphics intensive games to test your new rig: (IMO in order from best to not so best)
1. Modded Skyrim - You can literally swap out every single aspect of the game and make it whatever you want.. see a texture you don't like? Go to the Skyrim Nexus and download a 4k version of it.. not too difficult to do, I could give you a hand if you need it.
2. GTA V - fucking sick, fun to cruise LA and take pics of the sun setting etc.. and optimized wonderfully to crank up those settings and stay above 60 FPS
3. Crysis 3
4. Arma 3 - longest view distance I've ever seen in a game.. with a couple mods this shit looks great
5. Metro Last Light
Witcher 3, I dunno. They toned that shit down so much, it looks like some shit you'd see on console IMO.

Doesn't Arma III look like shit without a GSync monitor though? Gotta overclock the shit out of your CPU for that game, it's one of the few games where you'll notice any difference with an overclocked i5 vs a locked one.

Yeah, my 680 was performing the same as my homies SLI 680's because of being so reliant upon CPU.. the multiplayer maps that have a shit ton of logic programmed across a ton of units are gonna fuck your game all up.
Rookie map creators are to blame, if they don't know how to program enemies that are only rendered when visible, or disappear eventually after being killed, the server will fuck up terribly a few hours in and will require a reset.
The best maps are the dynamic ones that create missions for the server in a loop, vs a long string of preset logic. For benchmarking and eye candy, stick to the scenario mode in single.

Another game that I think looks really amazing even though it's more than 2 years old is Tomb Raider. The lighting really looks great in it. It's crazy how good it looks considering just how easy it is to run the game, I mean a 970 is such massive overkill for it. It makes you wonder what the fuck these developers are doing when games that actually need the 970's power (and in the case of Assassin's Creed Unity, the 980 Ti's power) don't look any better for the most part.

Even on single player I can't pull 60 fps without significantly dropping view distance in some of the Bohemia made maps. Like the tutorial one where you're setting up targets at the beginning, I'm pulling 35-40 fps with 33% GPU usage if I use the default draw distance the game recommends even if I turn FSAA and FXAA up all the way. That game is not made for locked processors. :lol I think you have the best possible setup for it with an overclocked i5, a GSync monitor, and an upper midrange GPU. Dropping draw distance in half on that map gets me to a pretty steady 53-60 fps though.
But then other maps I play are great at 55-60 fps even with the draw distance cranked like fucking hell. And man Arma III definitely has some of the best looking landscapes I have ever seen. It makes Crysis 3 look like shit. I have only just jumped in a couple of maps to look around though.

G-sync doesn't stop the stutter, this shit is fucked server side in multi too.. and the draw distance on this game is ridiculous, I think 10K is an option just for taking screens tbh.

Witcher 3, I dunno. They toned that shit down so much, it looks like some shit you'd see on console IMO.
I just started playing Witcher 3, and while it is toned way down from the trailer a couple of years back and doesn't look like anything too special in screenshots, it is pretty impressive actually playing it on PC. The lighting is excellent and the facial models are really detailed. Even with Hairworks off (I don't have a 980Ti and I'd rather have 60 fps) Geralt's hair still moves like a (very) toned down version of TressFX in Tomb Raider. So it still looks like individual strands of hair and not like a cone shaped polygon like Lara Croft's hair looked like in Tomb Raider with TressFX off. I'm not too far in yet, but it looks better than GTA V so far.

Forgot to mention I have most of the settings at High, I think the only thing I have at Ultra is textures since Witcher 3 doesn't actually consume much VRAM and since I have 3.5 GB of it on my card. And it still looks fucking amazing, better than Ultra on any other game I have. I'm already loving the combat in this game, I guess I'll have to give Witcher 2 another chance later on. But after playing Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 lately I need something with graphics. :lol

After playing it for a couple of hours today, it's significantly harder than most RPGs I have played. The leveling system is pretty complex for a AAA game, it seems like kind of a throwback RPG, actually, kind of like old-school Fallout with all the customization and shit. It looks like crap in screenshots but is actually pretty impressive ingame. I have heard the antialiasing is temporal instead of spatial, so maybe that's why it looks so good playing while pretty so-so in stills. You need a beast of a GPU to run it though, even at high with a couple of settings on ultra my 970 is barely keeping at a consistent 60 fps. But it's actually pretty smooth and you feel like all that horsepower is put to good use unlike in say Unity, which looks like nothing special and gets the same kind of framerates (though a lot less smoothly than TWC 3 does).

Arkham Knight runs shitty on even a Titan X, much less a 970. I'm not kidding, it's so bad that the game isn't for sale anymore and has been put off until about November or so. Warner Brothers pulled it from sale for PC because everyone was refunding it on steam. They actually outsourced the PC port to this tiny company of twelve that develops mobile games, and gave them like a 2 or 3 month deadline to port it from the consoles to PC. I thought AC Unity was a horrible port, but Arkham Knight is easily the worst port in years. Warner Brothers was telling people running $1000 video cards to run at 1080p with a 30 fps frame limit.

After playing TWC3 for a few days, I have to say it's not that hard. It was pretty hard really early on, but I like to do every side quest in these kind of games, which usually ensures my character is pretty strong once I get to story quests. So TWC2 is a pretty great game? How about the original?

Holy shit. Chris Roberts the same guy that did wing commander is doing star citizen!?!?!? :wow
damn this guy came back from the dead!
In 2011, Chris Roberts founded Cloud Imperium Games Corporation, together with his business partner and long-time international media attorney Ortwin Freyermuth, to work on a new game. On October 10, 2012, Cloud Imperium Games launched a crowdfunding campaign from the Roberts Space Industries website with the stated goal of raising between two and four million dollars to produce a space sim game for the personal computer in a sandbox vein. It was being built on the Cryengine 3 game engine. The game promised to integrate a traditional "branching storyline" game to be called Squadron 42 with a persistent online universe game to be called Star Citizen. On October 18, 2012, at the request of fans, a Kickstarter campaign was launched to run in conjunction with the Roberts Space Industries website. By November 19, 2012 when the combined campaigns concluded, they had earned $6,238,563, approximately 4.1 million from the RSI campaign, and approximately 2.1 from the Kickstarter campaign. This surpassed all stretch goals set for the campaign, and broke video game industry crowdfunding records, both in funds received and in number of backers.[1] Chris Roberts had stated that if at least $23 million could be raised over the course of the crowdfunding campaign, no outside investors' or developers' funding would be required. This goal was reached October 18, 2013.[2] As of July 10th, 2015, they have raised just under $85 million.[3] :wow :wow :wow :wow :wow :wow
In 2013 Chris Roberts announced Star Citizen would be created in modules to be released when playable. The first, the Hangar Module, was released on August 29th 2013, [4] and allowed the player to interact with certain ships planned for the game. The Dog-Fighting Module was released on June 3rd, 2014[5] under the name Arena Commander and allowed playing and testing of the game's dog-fighting system.

hater - Here's what I recommend, no particular genre
Payday2 - probably the most supported game I've ever seen.. constant content updates, some free some paid.. lot's of fun to squad up and try to stealth the missions. Nothing better than showing up to a Bank, casing the joint, surgical precision killing all guards and threats simultaneously, then holding out while your vault specialist gets you in to clear the shit out and leave..
Arma 3 - game drives me nuts when the frame rate dips below 40, but great military sim. Great graphics, and a TON of mods available at Armaholic.. basically any uniform, gun, vehicle, you name it is available for you to mod in.. not to mention custom missions from the ridiculously good editor to keep you going.. the game literally will never get old.
Cities Skylines - What the latest Sim City should have been.. lot's of time wasted trying to get the balance of the city right with so much shit that could go wrong.. good game to smoke and listen to music to
Battlefield 4 - fuck that Hardline shit, BF4 is still where it's at
Wargame: Airland Battle - pretty sick RTS from the Cold War era.. great graphics when you zoom in.. nice details
Splinter Cell Blacklist - Love me some stealth games, and this one gets it right.. great graphics, nicely optimized (runs at 144hz on my shit pretty easily) and near endless ways to approach the missions.
GTA V - Not much that hasn't been said before.. great port
Dying Light - Best zombie game out IMO.. good times to be had w/ 4 player Co-op story mode.. the online vs mode is pretty sick and it's blended perfectly into the single player mode

Payday2 - Eh. I like this game but it's somewhat repetitive to me. Still a good stealth element shooter though, with a cool leveling system.
Skylines - Amazing. Best city builder of all time. Tons of support and MODS for this game. So good.
BF4 - Need to play it on my new rig but it's just a solid shooter IMO. I don't like some of the mechanics that feel like they have latency in the game.
GTA V - Multiplayer is glitchy as hell but this game is so good it doesn't matter.
Dying Light - Maybe my GOTY 2014. So incredible. Unfortunately it doesn't have the most replay value IMO. They're still updating it though. Visually one of the most impressive games I've ever seen.
Now for my own:
Metro 2033 Redux - Coming from someone who's shot more firearms than I can count, this game absolutely NAILS the frenetic, violent pacing of gun combat. It's excellent and insanely tense.
Mount and Blade Warband - Terrible graphics but the gameplay and open world RPG sandbox is nearly unrivaled. You can pour hours into this, but it's a hard game to get the hang of. For $5 it's a fucking steal.
Borderlands 2: Over the top hilarious. One of my favorite games of the past decade.
Shadow of Mordor: Combine some of the best elements from the Batman games with some from the Assassin's Creed games and steep it in LotR. Phenomenal. Yahtzee's GOTY last year.
Rocket League: So I just got this game yesterday, but I can already recommend it completely. Phenomenally fun and a steal at $20.

Dying Light came out in 2015 bro. 2014 was kind of a weak year for gaming. Far Cry 4 was fun, but it wasn't the kind of crack where you couldn't put the game down like Dying Light, GTA V, and Witcher 3 have been for 2015. Plus 2014 had lots of complete shit with AC Unity and Watch Dogs. If I had to pick a favorite 2014 game then it's Dragon Age Inquisition, I think that's the only 2014 game that I thought really stood out above the others. I couldn't get into Shadow of Mordor at all though, that bored the shit out of me. 2015 is already so much better than 2014, and 2013 was way better too with Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, and Metro Last Light. Speaking of Tomb Raider, supposedly the Windows port comes out in January, I can't fucking wait for that shit. Though I doubt I'll be maxing it out with a 970 by then considering how GPU intensive the 2013 version is.

Hey man, do you ever get crashes in Witcher 3? Shit's frustrating as hell. I don't think it's my hardware, as GTA V pushes my CPU harder and running with vsync I'm not pushing my GPU to 100% constantly (though it is at an almost constant 99% GPU usage if I turn vsync off in TW3). I'm running version 1.07 of the game with the 353.30 drivers on Win 7 Pro. This game is amazing but damn that sucks when you're about to finish a big fight and all of a sudden freeze to desktop or blackscreen. I know the motherfucker isn't ever any higher than 65C on the core since I have set a decent fan curve and monitor it via MSI Afterburner and/or GPU-Z. CPU never runs hotter than 60C unless I run Prime95 or some other kind of synthetic.

It's on 1.07. I think it's the fucking shit 4+2 phase power delivery in my card after seeing a thread at the EVGA forums talking about this problem with the EVGA GTX 970 SC and the EVGA GTX 970 FTW. Man I regret buying the EVGA GTX 970 SC, I should have gotten a 6+2 phase card like the Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 or the MSI Gaming 970. Fucking EVGA not releasing their good version of the 970, the SSC with 6+2 phase power, until after I had bought the shitty 970 SC. But the EVGA 970 SC got great reviews so I got it. I think I'm going to RMA this card once I finish Witcher 3 and hope to hell they send me an SSC back (doubtful) or maybe I get an SC back with a higher ASIC score. I don't even put an overclock on it in TW3 and have the fans running at higher speeds than normal and the thing still crashes sometimes, it's funny, the worst was at the very beginning when you're having that flashback with Yennefer and the fucker would crash when I'd walk out on the balcony.
I never use the recommended settings from GeForce Experience, as they always seem to target 45 fps and look like shit when I use them. I want it running 60 fps the whole time.

Yeah, Devil's Canyon made huge improvements over standard Haswell. The i5-4670k and i7-4770k can be a real mixed bag when it comes to overclocking, but the i5-4690k and i7-4790k can usually hit 4.5-4.6 GHz.

Yeah I'm gonna see how much I can push with OCCT stress test tbh. Gigabyte's OC profile bumped CPU to 4.3Ghz + 1.31V and that's just overkill on the voltage. I've heard people getting 4.4/1.2V. Gonna fine tune it later this week.

I think I figured out what was causing the crashes. I always want MSI Afterburner running when I play a game since I have a custom fan curve running in the summer to keep the GPU around 55C-65C most of the time. So anyways, in the second or two it takes to load after I double click the desktop icon, sometimes I go start Afterburner right then, causing Witcher 3 to start minimized. And it turns out the game usually crashes within 30 minutes if I do this, but if I have Afterburner running in time I never get the crash even when I have the GPU overclocked. Glad I don't have to RMA the card, seems like it's probably some kind of driver issue.

Can't really do a direct comparison with the build of the same software I'm running on the G1 Gaming on Win7, since it's not specifically optimized for NVidia and has a lot more logging going on, so it obviously struggles a bit.

Starting to get the same vibe. I was level four once I moved out of the starting area and couldn't do shit. Leveling felt like a chore because there was very little I could do other than the main storyline. After getting the hang of things, I have the opposite problem. I'm leveling too quickly, I have a journal full of grey quests, and gear becomes obsolete the moment Geralt puts it on. I haven't even traveled to Skelige yet because there is still so much to do in Velen/Novigrad. But if I don't, I'm afraid there will be nothing but grey quests/enemies when I do get there.

Forget VOIP, Facebook Messenger, Google Chat, WhatsApp, the new communication device for terrorists is PlayStation 4
Friday’s gruesome attacks on ordinary Parisians has left not only 128 dead and scores injured, it has also left the world dazed at the ease with which the IS affiliated attackers could strike in the heart of Paris some 4100 kms far from Syria where IS is based.
Not only the attacks show that the terrorists had advanced arms and munitions, but also high level logistical support they received. To coordinate such a mass terrorist effort needs a powerful communicating device which is hidden from the authorities monitoring the IS communications 24×7. From the primary reports it seems that the IS terrorists have used one of the most popular gaming console in the world, Sony ’s PlayStation 4.
While France and its partner countries search for accomplices of the terrorists who assisted by providing logistical support, a raid in nearby Brussels reportedly provided evidence that included at least one PlayStation 4 console.
Belgian federal home affairs minister Jan Jambon said that the PS4 is by used ISIS agents to communicate, and was selected due to the fact that it’s notoriously hard to monitor. “The thing that keeps me awake at night is the guy behind his computer, looking for messages from [the Islamic State]and other hate preachers,” Jambon said last Friday, according to Brussels weekly, the Bulletin. “PlayStation 4 is even more difficult to keep track of than WhatsApp.”
PlayStation’s IP-based voice systems are difficult to monitor compared to traditional forms of communication such as mobile phones and computers. And terrorists could send messages to each other within PlayStation games without speaking or typing a word. However, it remains unclear how the PS4 actually helped the terrorists in Paris during the fateful night.

No one should expect native 4k. My GTX 970 can't even lock to 30 fps at medium settings in Witcher 3, and it's quite a bit faster than the GPU used in PS4 Good Version (which uses a downclocked RX 480).

Regarding the "extra" cost of the PC? Let's see how much you spend in one year on subscription fees, nickel and dime DLC opposed to a real mod community, and full cost, no sale games. I must have saved hundreds this year alone picking up top games on ^^nosteam^^ sales. How long do you need to wait for greatest hits sales from Sony or MS? 2 years or 20 million sales? Forget that shit, I got Max Payne 3 for free a couple of months after release on the CODEX Xmas sale. That shit adds up quick.

Architecturally, it's very different than your run of the mill PC, tbh... you could only really compare it if your CPU and GPU shared the same GDDR5 memory.
On a normal PC, you have to load up all the data to RAM, then to the video card. On the PS4, it's loaded straight up in GPU memory. It's not the first console to do that, but it's one of the tricks that consoles can get away with. For games like the Witcher or GTA, which constantly stream data to the GPU, it's a big plus.
What really sets the PS4 back is the CPU, tbh... the SIMD is crappy, the bandwidth from the CPU to the GDDR5 memory is not very good, the L2 cache is shared among 4 cores (so you get 2x L2 caches for 8 cores, so it's pretty easy to starve the cache), the branch predictor is single-level, instead of multi-level like newer Intel processors.
So the gain of bandwidth in loading/streaming GPU data makes up a bit for the underpowered GPU, but if your game has some critical CPU-bound stuff (and we know things like physics are still largely done on the CPU), you just lose the edge.
The Pro has the CPU clocked a bit faster, but some of that stuff is still a problem.
Like if you could build the same architecture with an i5 + same GPU, it would be so much faster, it's not even funny. Even with 4 cores (1 for the OS and 3 for the games).

CPY has been releasing cracked Denuvo games every 15 days since ROTR. 15 days later they released Inside. 15 days after that Doom. And 15 days after Doom is today (9/22).
No one should expect native 4k. My GTX 970 can't even lock to 30 fps at medium settings in Witcher 3, and it's quite a bit faster than the GPU used in PS4 Good Version (which uses a downclocked RX 480).
Only posted that link because Xbox 1 Scorpio will supposedly, no doubt feature 4K.

Sony is not only letting Microsoft back in, they're letting them trample them.

tbh, after the flop that's the Xbox One, I wanna see this Scorpio thing running before talking about trampling...

It's looking promising on paper though.
it's boasting 6 teraflaps and plays 4k "nativetely." That alone gives it a clear edge imo.
We'll see if this is fail on arrival.

Meh, XBox has no exclusives so it could have dual Titan X Pascal in SLI for all I care.

Gears of War 4 is the only thing thus far that kind of sucks to miss out on.

Specs will only take you so far. We had this discussion already with Apple vs Android. There's a huge ecosystem around these platforms, you really need to have way, way better specs and at least a comparable ecosystem to catch up, IMO.

Modular consoles :lol
The two big advantages consoles have going for them is they're supposed to give developers one machine to target their games at and they're cheaper than PC since you can use one for a few years. These half cycle refreshes are annoying, but ultimately necessary since the original XB1 and PS4 had such crap hardware to begin with. Modular consoles have all the big disadvantages of PC (multiple targets for developers leading to worse optimized games, high cost of ownership from regular upgrading) without the advantages of PC (backwards compatibility for decades back, free online play). SMH at shitty modular consoles. These half generation refreshes are bad enough.

What do you mean? You think they're just gonna create a new console every other year then? Good luck keeping a fan base when they know their 4-500 dollar investment has been replaced by the next big thing 2 years later.

A modular console is a PC. It's a nightmare for devs and adds little value. Heck, if not for the GPU advances, CPUs have been stale on the PC side for like 5 years (IIRC, Sandy Bridge came out in 2011).
They fucked up this iteration with low powered shit. Both the PS3 and XBox 360 lasted like 10 years. They really only started to show their age 5 years in.
The big dilemma for console makers is that neither Intel or NVidia want to sell their shit cheap, because they still perform. It used to be when a new gen of processors or GPU came out, the older shit went dirt cheap. Not anymore. A 5 year old i5-2500k sandy bridge still sells for $300. It's a blessing because putting together a relatively solid gaming PC still costs more or less twice as much as a console, but on the other hand, it's hard for them to compete without pricing their console twice as much.
It's definitely a transition period for console makers. I don't know what they're holding up for, if AMD gets their shit together or if they'll wait for ARM chips to evolve some more and pair them with a uber-GPU. Something's gotta give at some point.

I think the great recession made a console like the PS3 impossible this generation. With inflation factored in the PS3 at launch was a $775 console in today's money, and Sony still took huge losses on every console sold for a while. No way they were going to be able to sell now for the kind of prices they could command in 2006/07, so they cut corners with crap cpus and a low end gpu on the launch model. With the state of the economy I can also understand them not wanting to take big losses per console like they did with PS3.

True. Then again, if you look at their last quarter earnings, they made a killing with the console business. Which makes me think that's the reason they didn't switcheroo the CPU for the Neo.
I don't think they're going to change much unless MS ups their game considerably or the market fades. Right now, neither of those things have happened.
Has the ps4 neo launched?
