Matthew R Tynan @Matthew_Tynan
(http://twitter.com/Matthew_Tynan)Starting lineups: Black: Duncan, Parker, Green, Boris, Belinelli. Silver: Tiago, Bonner, Manu, Kawhi, Cory.
This is pretty much our season rotation.
But I still hope that Baynes is our 4th big and not madafakin Bonner.

I didn't get to see much of the scrimmage cause of the feed dying out, but how fast do you see Ayres being a part of the main rotation?
Or will he be the 3rd PF behind Duncan and Diaw?

If he ever amounts to that, then he will be worth it. Just needs to come in, rebound, and hit that mid range J.

Got to see the"Litte General" chopping it up with Coach Pop
Timmy still having a throwback perfomance!
Leonard being another option as a pick and roll ball handler should be a very intriguing thing. Like Tony he can attack off the screen or pull up from midrange.
Seems like Manu played well enough to silence the haters for now... hope he remains healthy.
Ayres can rebound and hit midrange shots? Nice.
We all thought Belinelli would fill the Neal role of scoring bench guard but it seems Mills does that too.

Avery Johnson is toxic as a coach with his huge ego. He isn't an option for this season, since he will work with ESPN, but I hope he will never ever be on a Spurs bench.

Isn't he also still being paid by NJ? He's lose that if he took another coaching gig in the NBA.

Isn't he also still being paid by NJ? He's lose that if he took another coaching gig in the NBA.
The way it usually works is that the Nets would be able to offset whatever amount Johnson's salary with the Spurs is and only have to pay him the difference. For Avery, it would pretty much mean he'd be working for free if he were coach, whereas he can double-dip if he works as a commentator.

It also showed us that Sam Young is not afraid of the challenge of guarding the Superstar 3's (Melo, LBJ, Durant). He wants to play defense and I love that about the guy. Imagine Duncan at the 5, Kawhi at the 4, Young at the 3, and Green at the 2 !! That is some defensive power right there!

It's difficult to answer right now. For Maggette, it's obviously depend on what he has left in the tank and for Young his ability to hit corner 3's. We will what will happen in preseason games.
And I easily take Nando over both Young and Maggette right now. De Colo has had a relatively good rookie season and has a way better chance to turn into something good than an aging, declining Maggette and a flawed, limited Young.

So you would go with a PG, when we are clearly log jammed in that position over Young who is a SF and is a position we need to fill? I understand the whole Nando has plenty of time to improve, but when Spurs Org. is clearly in a "win now" state, you go with Young who will bring defense, intensity, and hustle every night. More importantly, he'd be able to spell Kawhi 10-12 minutes a night to keep his knees at ease That 3 point shot will be there come playoff time.

If they're in win-now mode, Young needs to show he can hit that shot in the preseason games. PATFO can't gamble that he might figure it out by the playoffs.

I get you. The point i'm trying to make is he has all season to develop the corner 3. With our coaching staff, that's not a tall order. He can make every 3 during the season (Bonner), but it's going to really matter in the Playoffs. No one is going to care for a game when you hit 10 3's in December, if you can't make one in June!

I think the key for Young is to prove that he can hit that shot at all. If he just needs a little tweak then there's a good chance he'll flourish in that role but it is a tall order for Chip to fix something that never worked in the first place.

Young and Maggette likely won't be able to play these 12 minutes behind Kahwi because they aren't good enough to do so. These minutes will be played by Ginobili.
I have no issue to keep one of Young or Maggette with the 15th spot. Maggette or Young will be useful in case of injuries, in some specific matchups or for small ball lineups. Keeping both and cutting De Colo would be stupid. De Colo is better right now, has a bigger upside and can play both PG and SG.

I agree that De Colo has upside but will Pop play him? Last year, Pop's leash just about strangled him. If he doesn't get playing time, his spot on the roster is wasted.
I think he'll get the chance to develop his game somewhere but I don't feel like he'll get the chance here.

Bruno you had mentioned before Nando was a complainer in France or Spain. He already gave that infamous interview to the French press during last season. Is he considered a huge headache/bitch about things, or is it more typical whining about playing time? I like Nando, I think he's got incredible court vision and would like to see him given more minutes, but wondering if he's going to be a cancer or the type to never excel over here.

Hoops Czar
10-08-2013, 04:40 PM
Yes, Nando CAN play both PG and SG. The problem with him is that he can't shoot and teams don't respect his shot enough to cover him on offense which causes defenders to sag off him and clog the lanes. The other problem is his atrocious assist/turnover ratio. It's not that it's just bad... it's not sustainable at the NBA level. If he doesn't develop more consistency on both sides of the ball and learns how to run the team more efficiently, then he will be buried on the end of the bench for the entire season with a 0% chance of the Spurs picking up his option for next year.

Calling that interview infamous is quite an exaggeration. While De Colo has sometimes whined in the press on how he was misused or not used enough, he has never done something that could hurt his team and he has always remained a good teammate.
If he doesn't play this season, I can see him asking to be traded or released but I really doubt it would escalate into him being in the pain in the ass for the team. It should remain a Blair scenario and not go as far as it went with Jackson.

By infamous, I mean in ST standards. Of course we over exaggerate everything here. But it's good to hear he's never been a huge bitch. I can't even see him being as bad as Blair, lol at least not borrowing 30,000 for jewelry and not paying it back.
I have to wonder what his long term future is with Spurs or even the NBA. I read that recent interview with him, and he seemed to miss out on the Spanish lifestyle. Having spent some brief time there, I understand his feelings, especially about the need to drive everywhere here. I wonder if he goes back to Europe or determined to play at the highest level. Hopefully Pop can give him some more opportunities this year, because I still think he's got some unique skills.

He'd better flat out bust it in the preseason because at this point, the only way De Colo sees minutes during the regular season is if somebody drops an anvil on CoJo's head because he isn't running Ginobili or Belinelli out of the gym anytime soon.

For a change, Pop was very straightforward regarding the backup PG position. It's Joseph job to lose and Mills start as 3rd sting PG. It also confirms that they will try De Colo as SG this year.
Regarding an Euro expansion, it's sure that the NFL getting closer to having a franchise in London will motivate the NBA to do so. I think the best for a NBA Euro expansion would be two franchises in London and Paris.

It's interesting that he didn't even mention DeColo in regards to the pg position. With Green, Beli and Manu, I don't see how DeColo will get any minutes at all at sg, barring injury. I suspect DeColo is gone either via trade or walking at the end of the season.

i think it's cool that Kawhi's mom doesn't really try to get in the way of things, like some parents. Archie Manning, for example. Or the parents of those child stars. She just lets him do his thing.

Given that they opted to play him lots at SG (though some of that, particularly early, was to have Joseph play PG) in Summer League and the fact that they only have four other wings under contract, it's no surprise that they view De Colo as more of an SG now . . . but that only further seals his fate as a Spur, because he has no chance at breaking into the rotation as an SG and is nothing more than a homeless man's Ginobili and poor man's Belinelli as one.

The SG/SF rotation will be Green, Belinelli, Leonard and Ginobili. Now, when one of these 4 players won't play (injury, rest..), there will have some playing available for another player. It's not a given De Colo will get these minutes since they could be given to Mills, Joseph or Maggette if he makes the roster but De Colo seems to be a good candidate to get them.
And yeah, I definitively agree with you that De Colo's future with Spurs looks bleak. Spurs having signed Belinelli this summer and committing with Joseph as backup PG put him in a tough spot.
Lets please settle on a back up pg this season, and not keep ripping them from the line up every 3 games.

He was very straight forward just before the POs saying that De Colo got the job only to give it to Cojo a few days later so I wouldn't read too much into it... Cojo has to play better to keep his spot...

So, in other words, De Colo will likely be traded mid season or isn't a part of Pop's long term plans. It's hard to see De Colo win the battle of backup SG over Manu or Bellineli.

Yeah, because they have stron basketball culture. No, that won't happen. It should be a Greek, Spanish, Russian, Serbian or Lithuanian, because these countries have basketball culture.

That's why I said his future with Spurs looks bleak. And, sorry for you, but it also seems the case with Mills. As projected 3rd string PG, it won't get regular playing time.

NBA doesn't care about basketball culture. They care about money. Right now, there is only one Euro city that host regular NBA season games and it's London. Paris will likely also have some regular season games when they will have renovated their arena.
Stern initial project for an Euro expansion was London, Paris, Berlin, Milan and Barcelona. He is targeting the biggest and richest countries/cities.

Patty's competing against Cojo, which is a far more competitive battle, imo, than De Colo against Ginobili and Bellineli for the backup SG spot.
