It's camp. They always bring in spares at basically every position. You know, "camp bodies". But by playing for the Spurs, even just in preseason and training camp, it makes allocation to the Toros that much easier. It means the Toros won't necessarily have to draft him but can claim him as a local player (because of the UT connection as well as the Spurs connection). The Spurs have played this D-League game many many times.

When you consider that Parker will be rested for the first part of the training camp and that De Colo might be moved to the SG spot, an additional PG to practice was needed. It's a big plus that he will be able to be assigned at the Toros and that he is kinda talented.

Kabongo is just a high quality addition for a training camp like Young and Maggette. Spurs might have oppened their wallet and guarantee some money to have that kind of players.

I think these are the most high profile camp invites we've had for some time.

Surprised Kabongo went undrafted.

The fact that the Spurs invited two veteran wings is a good sign IMO.

I actually think that kabongo has a higher ceiling than joseph. what cojo has demonstrated to us is that he has a very strong work ethic. maybe that rubs off on kabongo.

You forgot Green. But yes, that's likely the rotation. I think Manu plays backup SF and assuming either one makes the team, Young or Maggette as the situational SF.

Geez, I completely forgot about Danny.
Ok, then revised we have TP, Cojo, and Mills as PGs.
Danny, Beli, and Nando as SGs.
Kawhi, Manu, and ? as SFs.
All with a few interchangeable parts.

It's too bad two players have sit out.
The NBA should let all 15 players suit up and play IMHO.

I'm not so sure about that.
He is an inch or two shorter and 5 to 10 pounds less than Cojo.
He is known to be a playmaker in high school and college, very good at passing and finding his teammates for them to shoot, but that may be because he doesn't have much confidence in his shooting, plus he is very quick, can stop on a dime, and goes right or left equally well. However his defense leaves a bit to be desired, certainly not as good as Cojo.

Might not add up to anything but he could end up on Spurs training camp roster:

Orlando MendezValdez ‏@OMV20 (https://twitter.com/OMV20) 26 Sep (https://twitter.com/OMV20/status/383309521235369984) Had an awesome time at the Spurs practice facility this morning.

Unsure if he is still under contract with UV Xalapa but could be given a camp invite with Spurs to showcase his skills for another team or go to the Toros. (Mendez-Valdez attended Lanier High School (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanier_High_School_%28San_Antonio,_Texas%29) in San Antonio, Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Antonio,_Texas), where he graduated in 2004. He was named the San Antonio Player of the year his senior year, and his jersey number was retired in 2009).

Here is a story from the SAEN on him:

http://www.expressnews.com/news/local/article/From-el-barrio-to-standout-pro-4833148.php?t=441281bc83c6ed8151&t=441281bc83d95dc057#/0

He was on the Mexico NT at the FIBA Americas, his stats:

http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/14/wcm/player/p/eid/6584/pid/81563/sid/6584/tid/328/profile.html

That's right in theory but in fact, most of the time, agents warn the parent team that their client is close to sign with another team. The parent team has then the opportunity to keep that player provided they are ready to offer him a contract.

Agreed. He's got far superior ball handling/play making skills. The knock on him seems to be work ethic, which is apparently why he didn't make Canada's team for the tournament of the Americas, despite the fact that they didn't have a backup capable of sufficiently running an offense.

Nonetheless, this is an outstanding move by the Spurs; to, for free, get a player who was widely regarded as a lottery caliber talent just over a year ago. They can let him play big minutes and develop on the Toros and if he blows up and they sense he may get signed by another team, they can trade one of De Colo/Mills to make room. If he makes impresses enough, he's got a shot to be the third PG the following season, as it's unlikely De Colo/Mills will return.

According to the Toronto Star Kabongo has been invited to Spurs training camp.
And after reading about him, I have to change my opinion and agree he seems to have more upside, play making, passing, and defensive ability than Cojo even though he is shorter by at least an inch.

Talent and upside are nothing without work ethic to realize them. Hopefully, the organization can knock some sense into this kid.

wow, Maggette is ripped in that picture. Don't have to worry about him being in shape. Everyone that is saying he is done, what are you basing that on? I haven't watched him at all for quite a while, does he not look good out there physically? I'm thinking it might just be the teams he was on and maybe he was just drained mentally playing on bad teams the last few years. He might become revitalized getting a chance to play for a team like the Spurs.

If both Maggette and Young play well in training camp, I'd definitely like to see the Spurs move someone and try to keep both.

That is pretty interesting to hear. It seems like a good move to help thank the team for giving the young guys a contract while developing at the D-League level.

Giving the parent teams a shot to match contracts officially (like they have with restricted free agents) would be nice too, since they are the teams spent time and money training the young guys. Barring that, giving the NBA teams 1 or 2 developmental roster slots that could be used to protect guys at the D-League level would be nice too, just to allow the NBA teams to really invest in D-League level players without worrying about another team stealing them.

There are a lot that could be done to improve the NBA/D-League interactions. It's obviously one of the league goal but it takes some times because an almost necessary condition is to have one D-League team per NBA team. There are now only 17 D-League teams. Another issue is that big changes will likely only be able to be made during a CBA renegotiation.

Excellent, they all worked for me as of about 30 minutes ago. I know he is beyond a long shot for that last roster slot, but Nwaelele sounds like a really good kid. I hope he makes he gets a callup beyond the D-League sometime. 7 more days left until the first preseason game!

Kinda off topic, but Telep's been officially hired. I know he's good at scouting, so I'm sure he can find us pieces that will contribute and have good potential, but do you think he'll be able to find a Tim, tony or Manu in the late 1st round?

Green All Over

By Adam Lucas (http://twitter.com/jadamlucas)

Dean Smith famously used to calm his teams with the advice that a billion people in China had no idea the game was even being played.

As Danny Green found out this summer, that's not always true at the NBA Finals level. The former Tar Heel sharpshooter spent over a week in China this offseason, where he was surprised to find out that his reputation--built on 27 three-pointers in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat, a league record--preceded him.

"I had never been there before, but I assumed they were big basketball fans," said Green, who stopped by Chapel Hill this past weekend in advance of San Antonio training camp opening this week. "But you don't know until you go over there. When you realize that people in China watched you play, that's when it hit me that the Finals stage was the biggest stage in the world. That says something about how big basketball is throughout the world."

Green's world was a well-traveled one this summer. In addition to his trip to China, he hosted a camp in New York, hosted a camp in Canada, and went on a two-week tour of south Texas and west Texas for the Spurs.

Jeff McDonald @JMcDonald_SAEN
(http://twitter.com/JMcDonald_SAEN)Duncan was Duncan, at one point doing his fundamental/positioning thing to beat Jeff Ayres for a post-up basket.

Jeff McDonald @JMcDonald_SAEN
(http://twitter.com/JMcDonald_SAEN)Kawhi was Kawhi. Self-explanatory.

Jeff McDonald @JMcDonald_SAEN
(http://twitter.com/JMcDonald_SAEN)De Colo had a pair of pick-six style steals in the backcourt, and knocked down most of his open looks.

Jeff McDonald @JMcDonald_SAEN
(http://twitter.com/JMcDonald_SAEN)Belinelli hit almost every shot he took, and he was open a lot. He has a chance to thrive with all the other weapons on this team.

Jeff McDonald @JMcDonald_SAEN
(http://twitter.com/JMcDonald_SAEN)Young was just active. Had a putback dunk in traffic. Nice feed to Cory Joseph for a fast-break layup. Nice backside block of Danny Green.

Jeff McDonald @JMcDonald_SAEN
(http://twitter.com/JMcDonald_SAEN)Sam Young was apparently also the star of the Spurs' obstacle course run this moring. Danny Green called him "an acrobat."

Woah. I've seen Corey Maggette do a front flip in a slam dunk contest, didn't know Young was that athletic and can also do that kind of stuff. I thought that Corey was overall the more athletic player between the two, maybe not now, but overall in his prime. I might have been wrong about that. Young is sounding very good right about now. If he can play good defense and shoot the ball from the corner, he sounds really, really good for that last spot on the team. I'd like to know Timvp's thoughts on Young.

Very interesting stuff that McDonald posted. When I read his thoughts on Belinelli, I just started smiling halfway through that sentence.

In terms of who wins the back up SF spots (if Spurs actually do keep one of Young/Maggette) Oct 19th could be a key date/litmus test when the Spurs play the Heat, granted it depends on if Lebron plays some during that game, Pop can try both Young and Maggette on Lebron to see who does the best.

There's not a lot of "big names" like last season's training camp roster.

Maggette, Young and Kabongo aren't big enough names for you? Remember, these are scrap pile signings for guys on make-good contracts. This is about as stacked as we've been with these kinds of players in several years for a training camp.

Starting to really look forward to see what Beli can do in silver and black.

I also want both Maggette and Young to make the roster, though I'm pushing for Young over Maggette because he is younger and has a higher ceiling. I feel like his skill set is also more complimentary to what the Spurs are trying to do offensively and defensively.

Unfortunately, I don't see Pop dropping either Mills or De Colo, and they are the only expendable parts. Bonner is still around taking up his usual space, but after his playoff run, I can't really fault Matty. He finally stepped up and did what was expected of him (for the most part). It's definitely not the worst thing to have your 4th or 5th big be one of the best shooters in the league, and Pop seems to have finally learned how to play him accordingly.

Going to be a tough race for that 15th spot. Knowing PATFO, they will probably cut both of them just to fuck with us.

Interesting, I guess if that is true and he doesn't think much of him, then I guess Maggette would be his default choice, as I think he did want him on the team the year that he chose Golden State instead.

Lots of the Spurs are looking in great shape. You expect that from professional athletes but it does not look like many of them took too much time off this offseason. That might also be the advantage of playing so late into the summer.

Man you know its funny, no one really talks about us making a move for Marco..But if he went to a team like the Thunder or the Heat, it would've been totally over-hyped like " oh man OKC got Belinelli, or oh shit man the heat are gonna three peat for sure they got Belinelli" :lol I'm also anxious to see the contributions he will make in Silver and Black!

Between Mills and De Colo, I would rather see De Colo cut. Mills brings that swagger to the bench that the team needs and can provide instant offense. With your last point, I won't be suprised if both Young and Maggette are cut. Just like how they cut Eddy Curry last year even though the team needed a big. But I think Sam Young fits more on the Spurs than Curry did anyway.

1-on-1 with Popovich: Spurs head coach opens training camp at USAFA

The Spurs opened camp fresh off of their NBA Finals loss to the Miami Heat last season. Popovich said that cadets can learn from the Spurs experiences to help them with the challenges they face here.

"If a loss in a certain situation or a tough break in life occurs, a real measure of that individual is how he or she moves on from it," he said.

Was watching the Bucks open practice stream to see what Gary Neal's role would be, he was running some PG and taking some of those head scratching shots (doesn't initiate the offense, comes off top of the key screen and launches 3). Anyway didn't see play it happened, but doesn't sound good:

Eric Buenning ‏@ericbuenning (https://twitter.com/ericbuenning) 11m (https://twitter.com/ericbuenning/status/386586317934432256) Trainer with Gary Neal. Whatever he's checking out, Neal is frustrated. Slammin chairs and what not.

comon. he makes 3.5M per. almost 4 times more than last season. it's probaly not frustration. it's the fact that they can't control an unstable character the way the Spurs environment can.

So Neal got hurt?

Not sure, I found that tweet above from someone that noticed the trainer was working on Neal and said he looked upset (slammed a chair, etc).

Still nothing official but:

Neal played a lot like the Neal who was the butt of pretty much every San Antonio Spurs related joke last season. He pulled up and missed at least three contested three-pointers before heading to the locker room with what looked to be a foot or ankle injury. Gary Neal gonna Gary Neal.
