So what does Powers keeping his job mean?

Good news for those who care about UT academics. Bad news for Rick Perry, I suppose.

As far as football, it probably doesn't mean anything to be honest.

Mack's firing is no joke, but Horns' handling of coaching switch sure is
http://www.cbssports.com/general/writer/gregg-doyel/24372203/macks-firing-is-no-joke-but-horns-handling-of-coaching-switch-sure-is

That was a horrible read, the writer did make some valid points but most of it was full of shit. If the writer did any digging into the situation at Texas much of it is the politics of our grand govenor who is trying to change the face of education in Texas to some BS vision he has come up with. So he starts to appoint people as regents that will do his bidding, they are the leak and they have an agenda, it's called remove Powers.

Deloss Dodds was not forced out, he has serious health problems and needs to address them, not a known fact but a true one. Mack has been on the hot seat for some time. He had planned to step down after the 2009 BCS championship and hand the program over to Muschamp. He lost and decided to come back for one more season, a disaster season and all of a sudden he doesn't want to step down, so Muschamp moves on and Texas is rebuilding it's entire coaching staff. Mack for the last 3 years has been trying to right the ship and he can't do it, so now he is being forced out.

This isn't rocket science, it's self preservation.

I do agree that Texas has a few too many leaks but most of those will go away with the changes going on in Belmont. Getting rid of the regents with agenda will need to be done also. They will cause serious problems to the education level at Texas if Rick Perry has his way.

All the big giant monster fluff is just journalistic Bullshit, are the Yankees or LA Lakers too big for their sports?

Why bad news for Ricky Perry? Genuinely have no idea.

Ricky boy is trying to destroy the University of Texas by stripping core activities like research. Plus, he wants to lower tuition at all costs even if that means losing top notch professors who might leave for bigger paychecks among other things.

Perry is adamant about UT creating get-your-bachelors-online programs, Powers is refusing because he believes (and everyone else with a brain) it lowers the prestige of having a UT degree. We aren't university of phoenix.

Hmm so hes near the top in conference titles won. Probably near the top in winning percentage and bowl wins as well. Tied for most national titles.

Plus hes a model coach/person off the field. Like I said, a lot more good than bad tbh.

UTSA should hire Mack, then FkLA could realize he doesn't do shit but clap on the sidelines, try to control the media, and have his 500 assistants do all the coaching for him (while he tries to meddle in it anyway), tbh.... he's also throws players under the bus after he's done coddling them, and he's a pussy, considering how he's going on bullshit "recruiting trips" in order to run and hide from his inevitable firing....

Which shouldn't have happened since UT consistently had more talented teams of players.

It would be impressive if he did that with the talent levels that Tech or A&M was getting. But with the talent UT gets? There is no excuse for not having at least 3 championships and the majority of the Big12 titles during his tenure here.

:lol yall act like its national title or bust. They arent won with Rivals star ratings.

Either way he won one, and reached another title game. Which is on par with other elite schools that enjoy many of the advantages UT does (USC, UF, FSU, OU, LSU, Ohio State). The only one that has really set itself apart from the pack is Alabama in recent years. Mack did it while running a squeeky clean program too.

now you're just talking out of your ass. you're just reaching because everyone proved you more than wrong and instead of admitting it like a normal, well adjusted adult human, you feel slighted because God forbid someone possess more knowledge on a subject than you do. and if they use that knowledge to prove your point wrong, they're not trying to convince you of their argument. clearly they're trying to embarass you, and you take that way to personally. nevermind the fact that you could save yourself from that feeling by simply knowing what you're talking about, or just not talking at all. really there's nothing wrong at all with admitting you're wrong about something and move on. quit projecting such a ridiculously huge, unjustified ego onto us.

yeah there's just no way to truly know that so the argument is pointless. but there's plenty of evidence of him covering for players when they get in tight spots. tattoogate brought down Tressel, but Sergio Kindle driving drunk and running his car into someones living room then fleeing the scene then Mack playing him in the next game is some straight up G shit.

The Saban shit was hilarious, but I honestly thought Mack was gone. They could've hired a two-headed shit slinging monkey named FK LA and I would've been cool with that.

Same here; even I was sure Mack was gone. He still might be if the bowl game is bad enough. I want to see some official announcement that he's staying.

Other options need to be explored besides Saban.

Mack Brown reminds me of 1988 Tom Landry, who was only 2-3 years older than Mack Brown when he got canned.

Things could still change in the next 30 days with current coaches in the NFL or college.

The UT football program is rotting more and more the longer Mack stays along with his yes men.

Once ESPN and other national sources started reporting it, I thought he was gone too. We all got hoodwinked to some degree...

This is yet another example of what a joke "sports journalism" is. Nobody could stand to be the last one reporting it, so they relied on shitty sources and didn't corroborate anything... Per-par

just saw someone float this idea on reddit and i think it falls in line with buttertooth's history of selfishness and intellectual dishonesty: Mack didn't fire manny diaz last year so he'd have someone to scapegoat if things didn't go right this year. I'd say it worked, dude just bought himself another year most likely.

next year im sure the excuse for the inevitable losses to teams like Iowa state and TCU will be "but we're young!! need time to develop :cry"

Here's a post from OB on Tuesday (from Ketchum)... Absolute gold plated quality :lmao

quote:
10 things I'm thinking on a Tuesday night (Mack, Saban and more)

What a day.

As I sit down to pour out some thoughts onto my keyboard, I don't even know exactly I'm going to say. So many thoughts. So many angles. So much everything.

Again, what a day.

I'm just going to start typing and we'll see where this bad boy takes me.

1. I hope everyone realizes what today representsa€| the first step in what will be one of the most memorable stretches of time that this school/athletic program has ever known. The next few days will represent the final days of a tremendous era in Longhorn football and that by itself represents an incredible marker in the history of this 13-year old website, but I can't stress enough that the next few days, weeks and months could be the type of stuff that everyone will be telling their grandkids about. We're living right in the middle of history, starting with the Mack's goodbye and continuing into whatever the hell happens next.

2. As I wrote on Monday everyone needs to be cool and let the process be the process. Meetings and conversations and negotiations will take place in the coming days and there will be a resolution by the end of the week. If you go back to Chip's story today, this quote is paramount in my mind:

"Mack Brown loves Texas and wants what's in the best interest of Texas and what's in the best interest of Mack Brown," one high-level source said. "I don't think it's been an easy decision. But he doesn't want negativity around the program he helped unify.

3. I hope everyone knows the level of vetting on this story was intense. We did not report this cavalierly. There was a lot of dialogue throughout the day as Chip and the staff worked in unison to piece together what specifically was going to be reported. Make no mistake about it, we understood what our report would represent and the magnitude of the reaction it would create.

4. I'm thinking Friday will be an incredibly emotional day. Can you imagine the banquet? Honestly, I can't. It's a little hard for me to imagine the scene just yet.

5. Saban. Saban. Saban. Saban. Saban. Saban. Saban. Saban.

This is the moment this piece of the story has been waiting on. As if Frodo had just put the ring on his ringer, the eye of college football has turned to Alabama to see what step Nick Saban takes next. His silence today speaks volumes. VOLUMES.

Whether he takes the Texas job or not, this is the moment Jimmy Sexton and Saban have been waiting on, the moment when the true power of Saban's worth reveals itself. Seven million? Ten Million? One Hundred Million? Two Hundred Million. A Billion? Whatever that number is, everything that has been hinted at for the last year comes to a head right now. This is what they have been waiting for and I meana€|. W-a-i-t-i-n-g. Now Saban gets paid, Sexton gets paid and then all of Sexton's other clients get paid again, which means Sexton gets to double dip on the rake! My God, I want to be Jimmy Sexton when I grow up. Total mancrush.

6. Every day Saban is silent, the better it becomes for Texas. No matter what happens, I really don't believe Saban wants to be viewed as a guy that was aligning for Mack's job before it was open. It will be incredibly hard for him to stay silent for the next 48 hours. Or hell, maybe it won't. We'll see, but I know every reporter on the planet is on the story now. Buckle up.

7. Just to be clear, this is the greatest attempted coaching theft in the history of the sport. It would cause the entire college football world to rumble.

8. There is no downside here for Texas. The might of the job is becoming apparent by the very discussion that is beginning to take place. If not Saban, this will be a very coveted position.

9. I've said it time and time again. One of the great aspects of being a Texas fan is that you have the luxury of having a lot of very talented writers/opinion makers in the Longhorn universe for information. As today got hotter and hotter, the last thing on my mind was any kind of silly Longhorns Internet site battle. Our 100% focus is on us and making sure that what we were doing was.is on point. In the aftermath of today, I'm reminded of these silly things we allow ourselves to engage in and I'll just remark once again that it's silly and I've been Silly The Clown on an occasion or two. With so much going on, we shouldn't have time to worry about the clutter and I can tell you today that was definitely the case. The bottom line is that good work in this industry in this market is not exclusive to one place, but I'm quite confident that the 13-year reputation of this website speaks for itself.

10. Nice job, Chip Brown.

One of the great things about working with the OB team is that we're more family than co-workers. There's a loyalty between us that makes working together every day something unique and special in this industry, so when one of the best college football reporters on the planet has the kind of day in reporting that makes the likes of Colin Cowherd, Bruce Feldman and just about every other respectable name in the industry sing his praises, it's a proud moment for all of us that witness the daily grind and total commitment that Chip puts into this job. I just wanted to give Chip an "attaboy" for the professionalism and care for his craft that he exhibits every day, an effort that that has helped make Orangebloods what it has become as a nationally credible news organization.

From, Chip to Suchomel to Dustin to Taylor to Alexa€| I'm a lucky dude.

11. Time to get back to work and stop with the back-patting. This is the start of the race and not the finish line. Are you guys ready for stories you'll tell your grandkids?

He's not staying. He'll be gone after the Alamo Bowl. Patterson or Mack could've already put this to bed by saying "Of course he'll (I'll) be here next year". Neither has done that. Mack is saying he's still needs to decide what's best. The writing is on the wall.

I just don't get how so many thought his departure would be that abrupt. The guy has been here 16 years and had some success. He wasn't leaving before his last bowl game here. And no one was going to force that on him. He's gone, but it wasn't going to happen that fast.

Auburn Rivals mods are very good, imo. Even during the coaching search (before Malzahn was hired) they pretty much stayed out of it and certainly didn't speculate. Hoke in particular is very careful in what he reports, and Jay G. Tate mostly sticks to personal interest stories, game recaps, stuff like that. They are by far the best Auburn site, imho. You really don't get homer stuff from either of them (thank goodness) and they actually allow some dissent on the board (lot's of Rivals boards only allow Sunshine pumping, or you get banned)

The guy from 24/7 is much more like Ketch and Brown and was the source of a lot of bullshit during the replacement search for Cheez-it.

Bill_Brasky

Nick Saban refutes Texas Speculation

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10136999/nick-saban-alabama-crimson-tide-coach-refutes-speculated-links-texas-longhorns

Nick Saban, who agreed to a long-term extension Friday to remain the coach at Alabama (http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/333/alabama-crimson-tide), said Saturday that he never had any intentions of going to Texas (http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/251/texas-longhorns).Saban said his commitment has and will continue to be to Alabama and that the speculation about potentially replacing his friend, Mack Brown, at Texas was unfair to everybody involved.

“http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nfl/coaches/65/30047.jpgMack Brown is the coach at Texas. He deserves the right, based on his body of work, to be able to leave the program the way he wants to leave the program. It wasn't fair to him or to me to be speculating about this job, which I haven't talked to anybody there about. Really, the whole thing from my perspective stunk, but there wasn't a hell of a lot I could do about it.
”-- Nick Saban

"The way this sort of got spun, it was a little bit more like, 'OK, he got a new contract at Alabama, so he's going to stay at Alabama instead of going to Texas,'" Saban told ESPN.com on Saturday. "I never considered going to Texas. That wasn't even a conversation. "I knew that if Mack stepped down, there would probably be an opportunity, but it wasn't something I was interested in doing, not at this stage in my career."

I too would have to believe that they know who they want. You don't push out MB without knowing who is coming in, so there must be a handshake deal in place. Having MB stay until after the bowl game would make sense if the replacement was someone like Harbaugh, so then you let him finish out his season without the chaos for him in the interim. Or, for the true conspiracy theorist, Saban buys out his contract after his bowl game and steps in.

The new coach would have to be named in advance of NSD so as not to kill the class, right? If so, we may not be in a position to wait on an NFL playoff coach.

Hmmmm, trying to make sense of the timing with Mack coaching the bowl game. It definitely is the case that Mack did not want to go out looking like he was fired. He wanted to go out on his terms and that is the way it should be. With him leaving "voluntarily", I guess hiring a coach before Mack is officially gone would be okay. But who would that be? Is the announcement tomorrow? There is a lot of information still to come.

So who are the realistic candidates?

Travis Haney lists these guys (in no particular order)

Jimbo Fisher/Gus Malzahn - He says unlikely because both are playing for the Natty and wouldn't be available until after Jan 6 --- Also says that Malzahn shies away from the spotlight too much and so probably isn't a good fit for the magnitude of the UT job (LHN etc.) --- Both also just signed extensions

Art Briles - recently signed extension
Jim Mora - recently signed extension
David Shaw - Haney says he may be looking to the NFL before another college job
Mike Gundy
Todd Graham
Jon Gruden

I wouldn't mind Gundy. Has a system and already has his hand in Texas recruiting. What he has done at Okie St is impressive, would love to see what he could do at Texas with a chance to recruit better guys overall. His price tag probably isn't as high either?

I think I heard that Patterson can't hire an ASU coach for the next year, so that would take Graham off the list.... can't imagine Texas wanting someone who gets owned by OU as consistently as Gundy does, tbh....

Here's what Haney said about Graham:

There’s supposedly some legal entanglement that would prevent Graham from going to UT without the ASU president’s consent, but I cannot imagine a means by which that would hold up. It seemingly stemmed from disgruntlement over former Sun Devils athletic director Patterson leaving ASU to become the new AD in Austin.

If Patterson can convince the board and the president that Graham is a solid fit, he could rise.

Graham would be the ideal TV candidate. But then there’s always the he-moves-around-a-lot narrative (he spent just one season at Pittsburgh before leaving for the Arizona State job) that might not resonate well with the Horns.

I'd be shocked if Malzahn or Fisher left their current situation for Texas.

Mora and Shaw are in the same boat that they're looking for an NFL job imo.

If Texas steals Todd Graham from ASU I'll be eternally grateful :lol

OSU has almost the same amount of money Texas has and one tenth the drama going on, he plays in the weakest of all the conferences and he is in the power school of that conference. Not sure why he would want to even look at Texas outside of wanting a raise.

I would love to have him, but I think he is only interested in getting a raise.

most coaches love another big name school when their names come up because it translates to a raise in many cases. but most coaches stay where they are already at if that school happens to be a bama or an OSU. the last time I saw a big name coach make a lateral move (from one year to the next) to another big name school was when roy smith left kansas to go to UNC. and no, lane kiffin does not count as a big name coach and going from tennessee to USC was probably an upward move.

funny how all the non-UT alumni suck this dude's cock. it's true that he set the standard that he fell victim to, but when you have the highest grossing program in the nation, you shouldn't be mediocre. i'd understand if this was the NFL and everyone is a professional, but UT is supposed to be a powerhouse, and college is where players are developed - not recruited and then shoved in a game and expect their talent to win.
