I'm just disgusted at how Pop handled the line-ups tonight. Patty Mills didn't play the entire 1st and 3rd quarters. Splitter was a shell of himself and clearly wasn't ready to play, yet he kept getting opportunities when someone like Baynes (or even Ayers) could have helped tremendously in his place.

Worst of all was Joseph getting so much playing time. We just desperately needed Mills out their in key stretches that Joseph was out there. Very frustrating game to watch. Pop was VERY stubborn tonight.

Yes he does retard. That's why he screams at refs every game and calls timeouts 10 seconds after the 2nd half starts. He's just overrated, you bum.

Say that when the Spurs don't have home court advantage in the playoffs. Our starters play the lowest number of minutes of any team in the NBA. Gee... Manu plays 23 min, and Tim less than 28 min. Look, I am not a Pop uber critic, and yes, Pop has lost more basketball knowledge in one nightmare than the collective site combined over the last decade, yada yada, but you piss off important games that are winnable by fucking experimenting and... I don't even know what the hell he was doing tonight TBH.

lefty with the goods. Pop is like that tenured professor, he got there with some great work in the past but now thinks he can get away with too much shit at times. This game was particularly embarrassing. I'll give him credit for the record at this point and the management of minutes, particularly after his mess in the Finals, but still not overly confident about this season. Not yet anyways.

The analogy is perfect because Pop basically has "academic tenure" in the sense that no one would ever fire him. He basically has the job as long as he wants, and does with it as he pleases.

yeah, giving away 3 and 4 games is crucial when you're playing in the west. if we played in the eastern conference, we could rest duncan for a quarter of the season and still have the #1 seed.

agree, I don't want any of the bench coaches to be the next HC. I hope Jim Boylen/Donald Pleasance is good in other areas after recommending Ayres. still don't understand that move.

as for replacing Pop, I don't think he's irreplaceable. I don't take him for granted, but I don't deny his fuckups either. I think you can find a good coach to take over, just requires a lot of work and diligence on the ownership to get it right.

Yes, but if Che were going to go to someone for advice and felt he might be a little out of his element, he'd probably go to, you know, another commander. Someone with experience in warfare. Not some dude sitting on his ass surfing the internet who has never served in the military, telling him to put all his tanks on a hill because they'll get +2 to range if he does so.

Same principle applies here. Pop is probably holding onto hope about Ayres for too long, but you're doubly the fool if you think you have even a BASIC concept of what to do to give the Spurs the best chance to win the title this year. You and a bunch of other posters act like Pop's just going senile, exactly half a year after we were seconds away from a title that we had no business even COMPETING for. We were considered playoff fodder last year for most of the season. But yeah. It's easier to be cynical and try to find reasons to nurture the belief that one of the 3 greatest coaches in NBA history is a massive idiot. :rolleyes

There are at least 27 other teams in the NBA who would kill to have Pop coaching them. The amount of people here with the "what have you done for me lately" attitude towards Pop, Tony, and Manu is fucking disgusting. It's the worst kind of fan, and I never thought I'd see Spurstalk populated with so many "Spurs fans" who seem to revel in the defeats/injuries/etc because it gives them a buzz of cognitive dissonance.

Does that help your comprehension? When 95% of a user's posts are bitching or pretending like they know EXACTLY how to coach an NBA team, that's the reputation they're earning of their own accord (not, this isn't directed at you specifically, more at cliff jumpers in general).

Coming up next on Spurstalk: Tony plays heroball 24/7, Manu is a turnover machine, Popovich would never have won shit without Duncan, and why the Spurs are a poorly managed franchise that is going nowhere fast and should blow the team up. There. I just wrote out all the nice little posts for you to cover the bases.

I think the biggest problem that Cry Havoc and a lot of others have is that it is not expressed like opinion or this is how I would do it..... it is the same chicken little dump Pop or Player after we lose a game. The Heat and Pacers lost to the Pistons, but I really don't think anyone believes that makes Detroit an Eastern powerhouse making the top two look over their shoulder. Sometimes you lose games and plans don't always work, and an analysis of what went wrong doesn't hurt.... but when the same tripe about Pop is past it or trade tried and tested players for some un tested rookie or euro player is plastered again and again it gets tired.

Especially when two missed free throws were the difference between us wearing championship gear and avoiding "NBA moments" from last finals, he got that run right with all his resting of players and experimenting etc.

Apparently it seems that having Mills and the 2nd unit dominate and create great chemistry together wasn't good enough for Pop so now we're back to watching multiple point guards split minutes (Mills and Pop's favorite little dooftard) and not surprisingly the 2nd unit suddenly looks like shit. The criticism of Pop is completely justified .. there seems to be no reason to mess with the lineups, the team's 2nd unit has been the best in the league so far, but Pop just can't keep from messing it up. My prediction is Joseph will slowly usurp Mills' minutes and that will pretty much kill Patty's confidence to the point where Joseph will eventually take over the full duties (regardless of how well the team plays with him) and Pop will subsequently feel justified.

It's frustrating to see Pop mess with lineups that were already successful. I think that's a knock on Pop for sure. The Spurs have kept the same personnel aside from 2 new faces and one of those faces has integrated themselves into the 2nd unit perfectly so why mess with lineups we know work? Or why not do it against teams that are not in the west?

This quote right clearly tells me either you don't watch Spurs game that often or you just don't pay attention. For the past 3 years, Pop has played horrible lineups against the quality team starters.

1. this gives our bench film on what they need to improve
2. this gives Pop a sample on what lineups and combination work, so he isn't experimenting in the playoff and
3. Yes, this gives our opponents a false sense of winning.

I didn't even watch the game, but when I read about it this morning I wasn't surprise at the result. 19-0 run against a shitty lineup. Do you think Pop is seriously going to play this same lineup come playoff time. The only decisions I questioned from Pop last year was benching Duncan those last two regulation possessions in game 6 and this wasn't after the fact either.
