Well everybody's doing it, so might as well get a head start here :lol

Notable free agents include: LT Jared Veldheer, DE Lamarr Houston, CB Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins, RB Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings, S Charles Woodson, and DT Vance Walker.

-To me, Veldheer is the one must-resign guy if I had to choose one from the list. He's coming off a year where he was on the short IR since camp and didn't finish strong. Hopefully that allows us to not spend the farm.

-Houston is another key resign candidate, but I have a feeling he's going to be grossly overpaid on the market. Last year our reserve DT, Desmond Bryant, got a 5 year 34 million dollar deal with Cleveland, and Houston is a superior player. I don't want him to be sniffing franchise tag money, as he's not exactly a sack artist at DE, but he's more of a motor guy who does well against the run. He can force pressures, but he doesn't pile on sacks, which is what I'd want if I'm paying my DE an obscene amount of money

-From the corners, I actually thought Mike Jenkins played better more consistently, but rumblings are the brass would prefer to keep Porter. They will likely only keep one and hope that Heart Surgery Hayden can emerge as a starter, considering he missed all of camp/preseason in his rookie campaign.

-:lol McFadden. adios motherfucker. I wouldn't mind bringing back Jennings at a reasonable deal, but I wouldn't bend over backwards for him. He's a good soldier who runs hard and can catch, but he's not an exceptional talent.

-I doubt they bring back Charles Woodson at anything more than a minimum. His only value comes in his knowledge/leadership. He physically isn't there anymore, though his instinct allowed him to make some big plays last year. He's a great mentor so I wouldn't mind him back. Having SS Tyvon Branch back from injury could theoretically make him look better too.

-Vance Walker was solid last year. Both he and Pat Sims formed a pretty formidable front wall as our DT's. While solid against the run, neither could really passrush up the middle, which is the opposite of what Raiders fans had been accustomed to. Tommy Kelly and Seymour were awesome interior pass rushers, but neither could stop the run, especially Seymour in his later years. I wouldn't mind bringing back the Sims-Walker duo, but like I alluded to earlier, this team sorely needs a pass rushing end. A line of Houston-Sims-Walker-(new passrusher) should be the goal.

-Fortunately, the Raiders are already about 60 mil below the cap, and after a few cuts are projected to have over 65-66 million which would give them more cap room than any team in NFL history. They should be able to resign the guys they want, but it would be foolish to overpay them just because we have money. This roster has too many holes.

-In free agency, I expect the Raiders to take a look at the WR class, where the big names are Decker, Nicks, and Maclin. Not sure if any of these guys can be a true #1, which is really what the Raiders need. We have 2-3 guys that look like good #2' guys, and we don't need another. I hope they dont splurge on Decker who is a true #2, and I've been hearing him being linked to Oakland, though hopefully its just speculation.

-The interior of our offensive line has been absolute shit. Both of our starting guards are reserve caliber, and our reserves (who got most of the starts last year) are NCAA caliber. Tackles are fine, and Wisniewski plays well enough at center, but I hope we spend and pick up Alex Mack and slide Wiz back over to left guard where he had a stellar rookie campaign. Finding a free agent RG shouldn't be terribly difficult.

-The other big need is the obvious: the QB situation. This one is a serious pain because there really isn't much to like about this draft, which is reminiscent of the Cam Newton draft minus Cam Newton, with guys like Ponder, Locker, etc. Bortles, Bridgewater, Carr are all underwhelming, and JFF is a ridiculous risk given his size and style. It has been reported and shown on this forum that the Raiders are looking into Schaub, and Vick has been linked here as well. I know they're both laughable, butI actually think going with a veteran stopgap is best, rather than investing the #5 overall pick on a scrub QB who the brass doesn't even believe in, and proceed to invest 2-3 years into him. With the draft pick, I'm hoping to address either the DE or WR spot.

Reggie McKenzie is on the hot seat. Though he hasn't had much to work with as far as cap room and draft picks, he's done pretty terribly with what he's had. He has all the draft picks and all the cap room in the world. Do something.

much better destination than Oak Athletics stadium

spurraider21

The Raiders should take whatever they could get, as their current stadium is probably the worst in the NFL (the building itself is fine, but that baseball shit is terrible), and I doubt Oakland is going to finance a new stadium :lol

Personally I want them to come back to LA

2 of the worst stadiums are in the AFC west...and I think we go to both of them.

Qualcomm is a giant shitthole IMO, can't imagine a stadium being worse but have never made it to Oakland tbh.

Hope DMac sprains his ankle on the way out the door tbh.

Yeah Qualcomm is just awful, but at least there's no infield :lol

last year during a field goal attempt the announcer said something like "and janikowski will attempt this kick from 1st base"

Too bad the Spanoses are shitty owners who alienated all the fans, otherwise the Chargers would already have a shiny new stadium by now....

Al Davis was an awful Gm for his last 8-9 years. Hue Jackson was gm for like a month and he traded a first and second for Palmer. Now Mckenzie is competing to take the throne

spurraider21
03-05-2014, 03:29 PM
Gil Brandt said on NFL radio that the raiders are looking to move up to #2. A few day ago there was a report that Mckenzie is enamored with Derek Carr. I don't think we'd have to trade up to get him. Maybe they're gunning for clowney and are prepared to let Houston walk in free agency

I don't see it happening, though with the raiders also looking at stopgap qb's like Vick it might mean they aren't looking to go qb... I don't think a talent devoid roster should be trading up though

Raven

as i predicted Carr is getting a lot of love, he should get more as the process goes on

spurraider21

I like Carr. I just hate that he pretty much played exclusively out of the shotgun in a spread offense. His passing ability is awesome though. His touch throws remind me of Palmer at USC

it obviously is a big issue, along with his lean frame i completely understand those who say he is unproven or he only played in gimmick offenses, but honestly every year the college game is less indicative for qbs, so one evaluator is probably better off taking the better strength - size package. In the end, i wouldn't draft a qb in the first round if he is unproven in pro style offenses and or has other issues, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be the first qb i'd draft. Like last year, i have a feeling someone will not be patient and will overdraft a qb. That's how shitty teams remain shitty tbh.

Gotta find that GM that is willing to take risks and gamble while finding that coach that can build something that is counter to what has been done so traditionally. They got the rabid fanbase and history...I think a new stadium is needed though.

I don't understand why Oakland is going after UFAs (not released players). They had two players signed away on big deals. They essentially traded two fourths (and probably at least two sevenths) just to bring in some washed up vets.

its going to be a struggle just to get to the salary floor at this point. we still have well over 50 million in cap room. they are in prime position to steal away a guy like Mack by giving him a massively frontloaded contract

They let most of the big-money players go. If thet weren't willing to keep their own players, they should have given out some bigger contracts by now. Trading decent picks for Tuck and Smith isn't the way to go.

spurraider21
03-18-2014, 11:36 PM
While I certainly would have liked to lock up Veldheer (he is younger, and better in pass protection), Penn is a capable starter, and a better run blocker. Along with the signings of Austin Howard and Kevin Boothe (two other plus run blockers), the raiders are showing they are going to be a power running team this season.

Justin Tuck, Lamarr Woodley, Antonio Smith, James Jones, and Tarell Brown are also FA signings that will all be starters. didn't really make any splash moves, but anytime you can sign 8 starters in free agency means you probably did something right.

True. It's been that way in Seattle ever since PC came aboard. It is really what others have been emulating as well. I know that is what he learned up in Green Bay. Hopefully they'll get some turnaround this year so that they can stick around and build some more. It seems that there is little patience and that is costing teams the chance to build something positive. A good Raiders team is beneficial for us California people--that gets the rivalries stoked and you have the 49ers and Raiders fans woofing.

c) good to see my nig C-wood back

d) didn't overspend on a WR2, james jones came in cheap. i wouldn't be surprised if we take a WR in the first 2 days of the draft

e) Kevin Boothe should slide in to start at left guard.

f) called schaub a while back, though i hope they aren't serious about having him a starter for "a few years." i dont mind him as a 1 year stopgap if they are planning to draft a qb this year, and have a raw guy like Carr develop. if not, a 1st round qb next season becomes a necessity unless schaub plays his ass off, which i don't anticipate

It was good to see them make solid moves without reaching for players. Just not fucking up the draft is a massive improvement. I mean anybody can be a bust, but it's all about taking the right risks at the right time. In previous years we would have jumped and taken Carr at #5 tbh

very satisfied with what we targeted in the draft. can't really say i know much about the late round picks outside of what i've read today, but i'm happy with the type of guys they targeted. 2 corners, a safety, and a nose tackle from rounds 4-7. 6 of our 8 picks ended up being defensive players. :tu

you can't really judge an offseason until players get on there, but its pretty great to think that despite all the signings we made this summer, we are still projected to once again have the most spending money in the NFL next offseason... our only really notable unrestricted free agents are going to be Stefen Wisniewski and Denarius Moore. McKenzie's approach is showing good signs

here's the bit i was talking about earlier

Scoop on Matt Schaub...
I was at the Draft last week in New York and ended up talking with several team reps during down time. One of those reps were from the Houston Texans, so of course I had to ask him about Matt Schaub. I asked him point blank what happened to Schaub last year. How do you go from a Pro bowl QB to being benched in favor of an unknown commodity? He painted a rather bleak picture. He said that the team lost confidence in Schaub. He moped around headquarters and appeared to have mentally checked out. His confidence was at an all-time low and was never able to recover from his dismal start. The players never regained faith which ultimately made him expendable.

Which leads me to what I've been hearing. I spoke with several Raiders sources that have been saying that Schaub doesn't exude confidence at any level. He walks around the facility and doesn't seem like an NFL quarterback and a leader of a team. I can't help but think of Tyler Wilson our 4th round pick from 2013. He too was broken down and destroyed mentally in camp last year. It was so bad for Tyler that the Raiders released him. In an effort to ease some of the popularity that Carr has been receiving and to help keep the pressure off Schaub, the Raiders are delaying the release of Carr jerseys.

I only hope Schaub can regain his 2012 form and lead the team. Or at least until Carr is ready!

He did lose mojo, but he was never the same after he suffered that Lisfranc injury in 11 when Albert Haynesworth hit him low. It's pretty much a degenerative injury, as his mobility ( what little he had) went out the window, and he doesn't plant firmly on that foot anymore. Which led to all those pick 6's, as looking at the gif

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rYLOtDmZM8E/UjYQiDie4rI/AAAAAAAAAtY/EgMabhguI0A/s1600/MAT1111.gif

Oakland Raiders QB Matt Schaub is excited to have more control of the offense in Oakland. "To come to an offense where the coach is looking to give you more freedom, and looking to give you more control of things," Schaub said. "I had that in some aspects in Houston, but there are things I'm being asked to do here that I didn't have control of in Houston. I would have loved to, but we just weren't in control of it. To now be in that position, and being the quarterback, that's such a great place to be because you can get everyone on the same page."

tl;dr: basically Carr looking better than they thought, more accurate than they thought. he's learning the offense at a rate faster than expected. they no longer believes he needs a redshirt season. they aren't ruling him starting out, saying they'll let him compete, but he still has to catch up to Schaub.

Of course, Carr is a guy thats supposed to look good in non-contact practice. The real questions will be answered when facing a live rush in camp and preseason

Ok man make it 8-8. I can see that. You have the Niners right where ya want them, they play the Seahawks on a Thurs, Raiders then at the Seahawks. Talk about stupid scheduling.

i'm not anticipating a playoff birth this year, don't get me wrong. the hope is that they improve (to something like 7-9 or 8-8) and show some hope for the future for a few reasons:

1) if they have another awful record, there's a good shot the coaching staff will be replaced, possibly the GM. too much turnover... i'd rather they earn a shot to keep stability

2) if they show improvement and are thus no longer seen as a dysfunctional laughingstock, but rather a team moving in the right direction, it would give them more opportunities in free agency. players for the past decade have been avoiding oakland, and rightfully so. if we turn it around, the 'stink' around oakland would be lifted. the raiders have the most cap space next offseason (for the 2nd straight year)

By all accounts they're saying our QB group as a whole is looking very strong, especially compared to last year (Pryor, Flynn, and UDFA McGloin)... Schaub and Carr have both looked sharp, and McGloin is better than he was at this point last year.

But the idea all along has been to start Schaub unless he faceplants, very similar to the situation in Seattle between Flynn and Russell Wilson. apparently they take way more downfield shots with Carr than Schaub, but he's still mostly running with the 2's. Schaub has been particularly sharp in redzone drills

What's most interesting is what I'm hearing from Dennis Allen after practices. I know there's a ton of coachspeak everywhere, but his tone is drastically different than the last couple of camps. Other years at this point he kept saying "they're making a lot of mistakes, but we have time to correct those, its still week 1 of camp" or "they're getting a little better, still have a ways to go"... trying to give a positive spin on shitty situations. This year he's been saying "it was a great practice, really like what i'm seeing" etc. I will always take coach press conferences with a grain of salt (and then some) but its interesting comparing him to how he's sounded the last 2 years

By all accounts Carr is looking fine (though he did fuck up a snap today, he did play primarily shotgun his last 2 seasons at Fresno St.), but Schaub has been very sharp throughout this first week of camp. The plan all along has been to redshirt Carr unless they absolutely HAD to get him in there, and at this point it looks like Schaub will be the unquestioned starter. He's been very strong in the short/intermediate game.

The front 7 hasn't really been giving enough time to complete that many deep passes. The d-line has been winning the battle in the trenches, and Lamarr Woodley is the guy who's name i've heard mentioned most in that regard.

Running back battle is still unclear, at this point the best guess is a complete plateau between MJD and McFadden, though its difficult to gauge the backs in practices, when you aren't dragging guys down to the ground or hitting them with any serious power. I think Jones-Drew would look better in those scenarios, McFadden has a porn-star build. Big upper body, skinny legs. Not great for driving through contact.

Raiders first depth chart has been released... most interesting spots

-MJD listed above McFadden. MJD is a better between tackles runner and a better pass protector. McFadden is a better receiver. makes sense this way, though i still predict a roughly even number of touches.

-Denarius Moore 3rd stringer... dude has regressed every year since his really impressive rookie campaign, where he appeared to be an absolute steal in the 5th round. He had a bunch of drop issues last couple of years and has been bad in camp. He could be a surprise cut. Greg Little is ahead of him on the depth chart, and he's not exactly known as a "hands" guy

-1st string receivers are Rod Streater and Andre Holmes, with james jones 2nd. the raiders will run a bunch of 3 receiver sets though, with Streater moving to the slot.

-David Ausberry listed as #1 TE over Mychal Rivera. ausberry is your typical annual offseason hype guy who is always hurt. hopefully he stays healthy this year. good to see he's done well enough to have the 1 spot for now.

-Schaub 1, Carr 2, McGloin 3. just as planned, just as expected

my biggest disappointment is the LG spot... 3rd round pick Gabe Jackson should be able to win that spot from Khalif Barnes, who is just really underwhelming. is ok at everything, not good at anything. the 1st depth chart usually sees a lot of changes, and hopefully Barnes ends up as a reserve. he can play 4 spots on the line. Jackson is a fucking truck at 336 pounds

the only sleeper guy we have is David Ausberry but he's been perennial preseason/camp hype only to be hurt/non-factor every season

Denarius Moore reportedly on the roster bubble. its crazy what a difference a year makes. last year our 53 man roster initially had 2 punters, and this year a guy with legit talent could be a cut. roster is miles ahead of last 2 seasons

- Schaub looked so pedestrian out there. I didn't think he was terrible, but he was uninspiring. The interception wasn't his fault, it was a solid throw and James Jones couldn't hang on. The DB got his hand in there, but good receivers will show strong hands when its a contested ball. Instead it got batted up and picked off. Regardless, he should have been picked off on an earlier throw to the sideline and is lucky Mathis dropped it. In the offseason I was for the Schaub acquisition, but I didn't want to send a pick for him for this reason... I knew he'd be a stopgap, and you shouldn't trade draft picks for stopgaps.

- The running backs look really impressive. MJD showed some of that old burst, was breaking tackles. McFadden for all his bullshit injuries doesn't look like they've affected him long term. He looks 100% and I think the committee with Jones-Drew will be the best thing thats ever happened with him. Both guys can run strong, both guys can catch, both can pass protect. The offense will lean on them quite a bit.

- The offensive line looked good. The best news is that they gave 3rd round pick Gabe Jackson some run with the 1's at left guard, and he (predictably) outplayed Khalif Barnes who had 2 penalties. Jackson should absolutely start, and Barnes is a guy that, though average at best, can play 4 positions on the line. That versatility is best used as a reserve. Once Jackson's move to the first team becomes permanent, the O-line will be set, and will be the strength of our offense. Crazy turnaround from last year.

- The receivers did the same shit. there were a couple of blatantly dropped passes. There were also 3 separate occasions where they caught the ball but couldn't get their feet inbounds in the endzone. all 3 could have been touchdowns. Greg Little did it twice.

- Carr was the bright spot of the day imo. He showed the same overall poise he did in week 1, which is the main thing i want to see. Quick decisions, no patting the ball, no happy feet at the sight of a pass rush. But unlike week 1 he made some downfield throws, got a TD. they rolled him out a few times and he looked great. He also suffered from 2 drops, one on a good downfield throw, one on a short third down. Unfortunately they left him in with the 3rd team to give him a 2 minute drill, and he got blindsided, the DE landed on top of him, and he got concussed. Should be ok, but stupid to let him get beat up like that.

- :lol corners... they might have to bench Tarrel Brown for 7th round pick TJ Carrie, who actually has impressed. They're literally hoping DJ Hayden comes back and is starting caliber, which he wasn't last year.

- the line looks fine, they get some pressure, Mack got a sack, etc. The corners are going to be holding this team back on defense, the receivers will on offense

I was excited to see my dog MJD revive his career in Oak town and couldn't help but notice that your O-line is purely built for run blocking. It showed when ever Shaub would get in a long yard situation the oline could not pass block for shit. But'ill admit that I ave not watched much raider football recently. The only thing is that I have seen a lot of shitty pass protection from the Jaguars over the years that it really stood out to me. Hopefully they rebuild that oline or Carr aint gonna last.

Matt Schaub is now battling a "sore elbow" at Raiders camp.

An arm injury doesn't explain Schaub's inability to move or make sound decisions, but could be telling in regards to his noticeable shortage of arm strength. Schaub has looked genuinely Matt Flynnian in preseason games. Perhaps the sore elbow will be the excuse Dennis Allen needs to put Schaub out of his misery. He's been outplayed by rookie Derek Carr throughout August.

apparently veldheer wanted to talk. the raiders offered him more than Arizona did. not much you can do about that. he's a good player but not a franchise tag caliber player. as you saw in what you posted earlier, players currently aren't banging the door down to play for oakland unless they get overpaid... and reggie mckenzie isn't really big on that. instead of overpaying guys, he signed veterans who can start. our best signing was probably Austin Howard who will be starting on our line for years to come. he also picked up guys like woodley, tuck, MJD who can still play, and dont come with bloated contracts.

the idea behind it is to try to get the "stink" off the franchise tbh, so we dont have to overpay guys to come over. get some guys who can play who can fill in decently, build through the draft, and hopefully you get in a situation where the team looks decent on the field and show promise (lets say Carr comes in and has a solid rookie year and the raiders go somewhere like 7-9). that would make it a more attractive spot for free agents.

our stadium/city situation also doesn't help, but it looks like Davis is done with oakland, he said he's no longer open to renewing the lease which expires this year.

yeah the schaub thing pissed me off. don't get me wrong, i was saying we need a veteran stopgap, and i even mentioned schaub as one of the guys i'd go after, but trading for him was moronic because:
a) he was going to get cut anyway
b) by trading for him instead of signing him you are inheriting his salary
c) a rebuilding team shouldn't deal draft picks for temporary guys... even if it was just a 6th

not sure in the case of bridgewater. he's looked good, but Cassel has actually played really well in the preseason. still, if they're even (and i know my team isn't competing anyway) i'd rather give the young guy experience.

90% of the posters on that board are ass. i like the site because they do have legitimate insiders during FA season.

mack looks good doing a lot of different things. has spent almost as much time lining up as a base DE as he has playing OLB. he's been surprisingly good against the run, driving the tackles backwards.

Dennis Allen said he wants to see where Schaub's elbow is at before making a decision on the starter.

imo thats just bullshit for "i'm going to start carr, and will use schaub's elbow as an excuse." Allen had been talking up Schaub all offseason long, repeatedly calling him a top 10 QB. he just doesn't want to look stupid and say "yeah, i thought he was a top 10 qb, but im going to start this rookie over him." also for what its worth, Schaub will be away from the team this weekend for "personal reasons"

Another good nugget of news is that starting TE David Ausberry is expected to return to practice Monday. He missed the entire preseason but has the potential to be an impact player on what is otherwise a pathetic TE unit

not gna lie, i said a few times i wanted to acquire schaub, but if you remember i was adamant that trading for him was a mistake, as opposed to waiting for him to get cut. all 8 of our draft picks this year made the roster, so adding another draft pick would have been good, even if it was just a 6th. plus we inherited his contract as opposed to getting him cheap.

i specifically wanted schaub for the scenario of having him as a stopgap with the hopes of us drafting Carr for the future. unfortunately Schaub hasn't rebounded from last year at all, but fortunately Carr is further along than anybody expected

yeah if he gets time he should be fine. our line is much better run blocking than in pass pro. though, and ryan historically makes rookies look confused

I'd really like to see Oak take some shots early, everyone is probably expecting a lot of running, and some dink and dunk to make Carr comfortable.

That secondary for the J-E-T-S is horrible. They had the one dude go AWOL and nothing else besides that. The front 7 is who'll prove to be the most difficult for Carr to deal with but he should be able to get some leverage against that secondary.

I can't ignore this....

Raiders on the road in the Dennis Allen era....2-14. Now they are going to travel to the east coast a place they haven't won at in over 10 years with a rookie QB.

The Jets at home in the last two seasons...9-7...with a 37-27 win over Oakland.

Eliminate trends when you have a new coach right? So why being up decade old trends, little fella?

You must have missed 2-14 on the road in the Dennis Allen era.
