:cry But Kobe did it
BOSTON — As arguably the greatest coach in basketball history, Phil Jackson won 11 championships with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. If anybody would know the differences between those all-time greats, it’s him. In a panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, Jackson shed some light on their work ethics.
“Shaq didn’t work at it,” Jackson said. “Michael was able to succeed despite all kinds of limitations in his game. He couldn’t hit an outside shot. He couldn’t defend. But all of that went away because of his work ethic. Kobe saw that as a pinnacle that he had to reach, and he took it to a whole new level.”
After winning three straight titles with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000 to 2002, O’Neal and Bryant had a famous falling out, and Jackson pointed to their personalities as a cause.
“Shaq had a clown role he had to play,” he said. “So that was part of the rift.”
O’Neal’s outsized personality made him one of the most popular players in the NBA, but it clashed with Bryant’s serious-minded approach. In the end, Kobe won out.

The dynasty broke because Kobe was too much of a bitch to accept his second fiddle role. They were right to choose the young gun over the diesel at the time, but truth be told they shouldn't have had to make a choice, but Kirby refused to coexist and ran shaq outPERIOD

Kobe was destined to be that team's ace by mid-decade. Eventually he would've been the guy that carried the tired old shit bag Shaq to consecutive titles.

Thank you. He wasn't going to be "Gilligan" to Daddy's "The Skipper." No.
And the proof is in the pudding:::
Kobe: 2

What makes me mind boggled though is LA fans just seem to hate Shaq now but when he was there during the three peat I am sure they did like the guy and were cheering when he dunked on so and so! Later on after his monstrous run he had it is blame Shaq and he was lazy blah blah blah! Do they not respect the guy for what he did for the team during that title run or title runs I should say? Shaq was the most feared dominant force on the planet then, period.

I always got love for the Diesel for the great years/moments/games he gave us, but its always been known that he became extremely lazy after the 2nd title. He wasn't as dedicated, was a fatshit in the offseason, but could get away with it b/c he was still in his prime and the most dominant player in the game.
Hindsight looks even better as far as the breakup is concerned--he had basically 1.5 good seasons left in him, but wanted more money + years than that and obviously he declined FAST starting in the 2006 Finals. It was the right move.

Daddy broke ranks first. I have no problem with a Laker leaving in glad tidyings, Horry, Vuj, the list is long. Daddy thought shows his ass and for that I don't forgive. It helps that Kobe ran him to ground and sent him into the dust that is always the end down 1, but, I still won't forget.

That was still my favorite team of all time, but Dr. Buss made the right call. You dont give Max money to Shaq who had a serious toe injury and only 3 years left in his prime when you know Kobe is going to go make another franchise even richer.
Jim would have lost both Shaq and Kobe and signed Gary Payton to a max contract tbh

Yes but Kobe gets 48 mill or near that with an achillies injury after last year with 0 years left in his prime? I see what you are saying but that contradicts what you said there about Shaq and Shaq had three years left in his prime and not zero plus he helped them win three titles as the main force.

1) As I said, the Kobe contract is purely a Jim Buss decision. Dr. Buss would have shipped Kobe's ass out for some first round picks and rebuild. Hence the joke if Jim ran the team then he'd lose both Kobe and Shaq and sign Payton to a max contract. Jim Buss is a fucking moron, he is infamously known as a fucking moron. I cant understand how this happened to the Lakers of all franchises, its a haters dream come true
2) Most hate Shaq because 90% of Laker fans became Kobe die hards and Kobe clearly has a grudge against Shaq. The grudge stems from the fact IMHO that Kobe feels if not for Shaq he would get more credit for those 3 and he had to take a back seat. To be fair to Kobe, if the Lakers had built around him since day 1 we would get to see how great he really was. I personally think 5 rings was the max he could reach and he did.

His clownish ways while great with kinds and in his community service endeavors ultimately undermined Shaq. As great as he loved by this board and even some Lakers fans that despise Kobe for running him off. Shaq as dominant as he was is a under achiever. He should of won at LEAST 5 rings no matter what and had the physical tools to end the GOAT center debate and maybe even GOAT player one.
Shaq was like a more dominant David Robinson. Great player truly a one of a kind special athlete. But to me both should be judged as great centers who should of been greater. Who in the NB has a greater size/speed ratio than Shaq? Lebron? Maybe?! And Speaking of speed David was like a taller just as powerful Lebron running the lanes. Sure O'neal is greater than Robinson but both guys never got the most of their gifts and make no mistake SHaq & David are the two most gifted centers in NBA history.
Both should of been in GOAT convo with MJ neither are ....

Even though Hakeem and Tim Duncan were not as big as Shaq, they were just as dominant. You've got to have the complete game for GOAT consideration and Tim & Dream are nowhere near GOAT status. Shaq may have underachieved but he was never going to be the GOAT tbh.

Again because you are talking about two players who used their gifts and maximized it. If Shaq maximized his he absolutely would of been the GOAT big of his generation. the fact that you can make a case for Tim and Hakeem as great as they are tell you how much Shaq under-achieved. BEfore shaq Go "heavier" even before he got fat ... Shaq was lean but twice as strong as either Tim or Hakeem. HE was not as quick as Hakeem but quicker than duncan who was the GOAT PF and a much more explosive leaper than either guy. IF shaq cared more for both end of the cours he could of been the most dominant "low block" center (not as versatile as Tim or Hakeem but more dominant) as well as the greatest rebounding center of his area. Doubt he would of ever been as great a shot blocker or PNR defender as Hakeem or paint anchor as Duncan but he absolutely could of patrolled the middle much better than he did. He had length, size and great hops.

During the 3 peat Shaq averaged in the playoffs:
30 points 15.4 boards 3 assists and about 2.5 blocks for the first two and those numbers dipped a bit as Kobe jumped from #2 to 1B ...
Those numbers factor in foul trouble and neither Hakeem or Tim playing with as good as Kobe. Guy was a beast. Give him duncan's work ethic or Kobe's will he is definitely in GOAT convo ...

Duncan surpassed Shaq a year ago and I believe if he had an elite SG or a PG as his sidekick earlier, the Lakers wouldn't have that 3,peat. Unlike Shaq, Duncan never had a problem sharing the ball with a SG.

I think we are talking different things. I have said on here CONSISTENTLY that Duncan>Shaq.
Why do you keep bringing that up? Many laker fans and even some Spur fans on here disagree ... I do not.
I am just saying IF SHAQ was focused and more driven he would of made this a short debate because despite being lazy and unfocused at times he still is a top 5 center all-time.
So imagine what he would of done with more drive?

Shaq had to retire early because of having to carry Kobrick's ass for so long. Its no wonder Shaq started having back, knee, and ankle problems. When Kobrick got shut down by Austin Chrosure in the 2000 Finals.....Shaq had to put up numbers that may never be seen again in the NBA Finals by any position player.
But, that wasn't right, Bud. And Media sheepherding Howard as he did it was reprehensible. That belonged to Daddy.

In the three Finals wins from 2009-2002, Shaquille averaged 35 and 16. He was clearly unstoppable. Any two guard in the league could have won three rings on those Shaq-led teams. The two guard who happened to play for them at the time was K. Bryant.
That's all. Nothing more. He was the starting two guard who was lucky enough to coattail three rings.
Then he was egomaniacal enough to have Shaquille shipped out of town. And Laker management was dumb enough to actually do it.
Then Bryant rewarded Laker management by forcing himself on a young woman in Colorado. And for some unconscionable reason, he mentioned Shaquille's name when talking with the Eagle police.

:stirpot:
:fishing
I'm sure that bothered Kobe....a lot. That's why 17 June 2010 he paid that hump to ask him that question, because if he hadn't paid, that question would not have been asked. Media wanted no part of:::
Kobe: 2
Daddy: 1

What? It was a Jim and Jeanie combo decision on doing what they thought their dad would do. I'd find it hard to believe that they never talked about resigning Kobe at any time in the years before Dr Buss died. (If you think they're lying or just mistaken)
The Lakers had already begun thinking about extending Bryant – Jeanie Buss was all for it, Jim more deliberate – when the two sides began feeling each other out before Kobe’s return in December. When word came back that Bryant liked the idea of getting it done, the bargaining started.
Bryant asked for more than he got, but settled for remaining the NBA’s highest-paid player.
As originally reported, Jim and Jeanie agreed because it’s what their father would have done.
They may have even done it on their father’s advice, since Jerry Buss did the same thing to thank Magic Johnson for his extraordinary contribution.

Like the article later points out, that doesn't make it not a horrible basketball decision--but you can at least see their thought process.

Im sure Dr. Buss said a few years before his death he would like Kobe to retire a Laker. I'm also sure Kobe used that as a bargaining chip being the "business man" that he is. However, poor Dr. Buss was busy dealing with cancer which is a horrible way to die, from what reports indicated in the last year of his life he was hardly 'there'.
So basically Dr. Buss never really got to watch Kobe past 2012, I doubt he knew exactly how badly Kobe would deteriorate by 2014. I am confident he would not have made that decision.

Tbh, he gave that money to a literally (at the time) dying Magic. It didn't have the basketball ramifications that this Kobe deal did though.
