The most disgusting thing I've ever eaten was 10 years ago in Colombia. I'd been backpacking in S. America for 5 months, and I was really beginning to miss Mexican food. The bus stations down there are like truckstops, and they nearly always have restaurants. Anyway, I hopped off the bus from Cartagena to Baranquilla at like 3 in the morning and was stunned to see Huevos Rancheros listed on the menu. I eagerly ordered it.

What came out was a single fried egg that had somehow been battered and deep fried again. The grease soaked through two paper plates in about 30 seconds. Much to my later regret, I ate it.

Not to question a pregnant lady, but I'd highly recommend not doing that. Salmonella poisoning is quite common when dealing with raw eggs and I've seen the side effects first hand. Not a pretty sight.

Just a public service announcement. :)

Supposedly not. They say that you have to have the white and the yolk cooked all the way through. They say not to eat over-easy/poached/softboiled etc.

We have some elk sausage (shot it last x-mas) in the freezer. Cook it on the grill, just enough so that there's no pink in the center, and toss it in the fridge. In the morning, re-heat it in a pan with some butter and chopped garlic. Toss 4-5 eggs on top of that.

Side with Ramen noodles. Damn that shit is good.

i guess this is the "official" word on eggs....

1999 FDA Food Code Does Not Prohibit Restaurants from Serving Sunny-Side-Up or Over-Easy Eggs
Contrary to some mistaken recent media reports, the 1999 FDA Food Code does NOT prohibit restaurants from serving sunny-side-up or over-easy eggs. The Food Code, which is FDA guidance on restaurant safety, says that if less thoroughly-cooked egg dishes are served in restaurants, consumers should be provided with an advisory -- on menus, brochures or other written materials -- that there is an increased risk associated with eating undercooked eggs especially for vulnerable consumers.

Restaurants and other retail establishments should continue to follow their local and state health regulations covering food service establishments, many of which have adopted the FDA Food Code.

There is a new FDA rule relating to egg safety. However, it provides safe handling instructions to consumers. This final rule dated December 2000 will take effect on September 4, 2001, and states that egg cartons sold in supermarkets and other retail establishments must bear safe handling instructions. This label is an advisory to advise consumers, especially those most vulnerable to foodborne illness, about the potential of illness from Salmonella enteritidis.

This rule is one part of the larger Egg Safety Action Plan, a farm-to-table approach for ensuring the safety of our nation's egg supply. For more information on the Egg Safety Action Plan go to http://www.foodsafety.gov.

Question: I enjoy eating sunny side up, over-easy eggs. Could I get a food borne illness from Salmonella enteritidis?

Answer: Although the risk is small, you could get salmonellosis from over-easy eggs. In New Jersey, state law that requires eggs to be fully cooked. No more "over-easy", sunny side up eggs on the restaurant menus there. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has consumer guidelines for cooking eggs safely. The guidelines that follow are written for people considered not at risk, however.

Fried eggs should be cooked for two to three minutes on each side or four minutes in a covered pan. The yolk should begin to thicken.
Scrambled eggs should be cooked until firm throughout and not runny.
Poached eggs should be cooked for five minutes over boiling water.
Soft-cooked eggs should be cooked in the shell in boiling water for seven minutes. For those of you who elect not to eat hard cooked eggs, you can further lower your risk by cooking the egg until the white is completely firm and the yolk begins to thicken but is not hard.

in the form of breakfast tacos with salsa or hot sauce on top.
