I read the brief article on ExpressNews but I ain't subscribing to that trash.

Anyways, it reported that Spurs are offering rent incentive to employees for moving to the downtown area. Anyone have a better article to post on here? Thanks!

Should have put the fucking SBC/ATT downtown. I hate the location out in the middle of nowhere.

It's not bad for coming in from out of town though. You can quickly and easily hop on/off the highway before/after games. If I was a local though, ya, I'm sure I'd feel the same.

That wasn't the Spurs decision, other than by virtue of their willingness to work with Bexar County when the City of San Antonio couldn't work something out to get the building funded. Had the City participated in that process when it had the chance, the new arena would have been downtown and a total boon to the City. Instead, the City leaders kept trying to tie unpopular pet projects to the referendum and the Spurs were left to partner with Bexar County; Bexar County's only reasonably available land was near the Freeman Coliseum, which is how the building ended up there. It's certainly not an ideal location for the type of events it hosts and the notion of developing the surrounding area to make it more attractive to arena patrons has never materialized for whatever reason.

Yup, the city kept tying the Convention Center and all kinds of shit to that vote. Could have been great for restaurants and bars downtown.

As awesome as it would be for us here in town, I don't think it would be a smart franchise move at all. SA loves their home team more than any other professional sports franchise around, Austin would have to worry about a Mexican invasion, tbh.

There is no chance of the Spurs leaving San Antonio anytime in the next few decades, so its really a moot point.

Yeah I'm coming from Austin so it's easy for me but it's always great to leave a game and hit up restaurants/bars whatever. Wish they could have put it where Hemisfair was.

it would just be nice to have a local team i support besides the Kings. the raiders are a 6 hour drive away, and while i dont care much for baseball anyway, im not even a dodger fan. i'm a diamondbacks fan (randy johnson is my favorite player of all time)

but we all know kobe is more likely to lead the league in assists next year than have the spurs move to L:lols Angeles

Could Austin support the team with UT being front and center? Also like mentioned above, what about the traffic situation? I know the city is more compressed so it could be interesting.

personally i'd have mixed feelings. It would definitely be an easier drive for me, especially if I move back to Austin metropolitan area. But Austin Spurs doesn't roll off the tongue like San Antonio Spurs. I also think SA is a unique city and Spurs are a huge part of that identity/history. I wouldn't be against it, it would be similar to Niners moving from San Fran to Santa Clara, not much of a difference. But I do feel like Spurs belong in SA. Also, I don't think SA has reached its potential yet as a city or as a home for Spurs. But like you said, if the city is so stupid to screw that up, then Austin would be an easy move.

I do laugh at trolls downstairs who say the team is going to Kansas City or Seattle. That would be such a terrible decision by the NBA, I know I'd quit supporting the league. Austin is a perfect choice if necessary but I don't think it would need to be.

If the city pisses off the Spurs enough for them to leave town, the city deserves it tbh. The franchise has been pretty god damn loyal to San Antonio and has never really asked for much.

A lot of things would have to happen in both cities, but a new arena is going to be build here probably just around the time the ATT Center lease runs out. It doesn't take much imagination to see what could possibly happen.

That is true, there is a lot of money and activity in Austin, so I'm sure they're eyeballing a professional team. I think with all the hipsters in Austin, a MLS team would probably do well. But I wouldn't be shocked if they're wanting a piece of the Spurs. In the end it will come down to location, help from the government etc....like usual. But it wouldn't be bad, it would be far more sensible than moving a team from Northern Cali to SoCal, or Seattle to OKC etc....

I think competition is a good thing so the two cities wanting a piece of the Spurs, if true, would force SA to up its game and I think the city has a lot of potential. Austin ain't going anywhere so it's not a bad quandary imo.

Shit, considering how successful they've been and how involved they are in the community it doesn't seem all that much (compared with, say, the Kings' situation).

If it happens it won't be for another 20+ years, but I bet nobody envisioned the Sonics leaving Seattle or all the drama in Sacramento the last few years.

The Kings had a history of 15 years in Sacramento when they started campaigning for a new arena. 15 years. And it always seemed like the Maloofs wanted out of Sacramento and into a bigger market or into their hometown of Las Vegas. Sacramento also has very few billionaires. San Antonio has 6 with another just under 1 billion.

The Sonics situation was just everything that had to go wrong, going wrong. The tax payers had just built two stadiums (MLB/NFL) and didn't want to pay for another arena. The owner also sold the team to an out of state outfit that lied and always intended to move them. Many a lesson was learned from their plight.

Should have put the fucking SBC/ATT downtown. I hate the location out in the middle of nowhere.

The city was INSISTING on a sales tax for the downtown location, and that was never going to pass. The county stepped up with the Rodeo, and proposed the Hotel/rent car tax, which passed with ease, since it was primarily out of towners being taxed. If the stupid mayor had been willing to levy that same tax, the arena would be downtown. He was too in the pockets of the hotel industry, though.

I think a sales tax increase would have passed, by the slimmest of margins, which would have been expected with the Alamodome stuff happening less than 10 years before.

It definitely would pass today.

Also, I thought it had more to do with the Spurs not wanting a downtown location and the city insisting on it being downtown. I could have sworn I remember hearing or reading that Holt didn't want the Riverwalk stealing away potential revenue from the arena.

It's great that the Spurs are offering incentives to their employees. I hope HEB and USAA can do a similar incentive. There are some fantastic developments happening.

On the arena Austin has a better chance at MLB than the Spurs. I mean they have a Triple A team there. I don't mind where the ATT Center is located. I mean in Houston you have to drive all the way down to south 610 for Reliant. Even when I lived there back in the 80's-90's The Summit (where the Rockets played) was in Greenway Plaza. It's not like either area was bustling with bars and activity. Cowboy Stadium, er AT&T Stadium and the Rangers ballpark aren't in destinations I'm dying to hang out in.

But in the far future there could be a scenario where a new arena could be built where the Institute of Texan Cultures currently is. Ultimately preservationists won't win the battle to keep that building.

The stupidity in this thread.

It is totally rampant, but I liken it to "conditioned ignorance".

Or they could build a couple of state of the art domed stadiums and a new arena half way between San Antonio and Austin, and an huge international airport while they are at it.
Then they could offer a real attraction for MLB and the NFL.

By the way I'm not sure how people can still root for them if they moved from San Antonio. Effectively they would cease to be the team a fan rooted for, identity-wise.

I would favor the proposal already spoken for in this thread in building a stadium closer to Austin, as long as the team name remains. I think the 49ers are doing that with their stadium an hour outside San Fran.
