The only 2 year deals Manu needs to be signing is one with the senior living nursing homes, tbh. And maybe an endorsement with Rogaine. :lol

2 year/$18m? I mean, Kobe can't even walk and was just handed $48m/2... heck Manu took a shit on Wade and he's gonna be making $20m next year...

the biggest obstacle is 5 games in 6 days... especially for an older team... I suspect Lamas is gonna try to win the 1st game (Puerto Rico is probably the most difficult opponent of the group), and then monitor the minutes in the remaining games. They could potentially get to the Greece game already qualified, and would let them rest everybody...

What's Manu's diet like these days? If he's got a good diet, and he keeps to it during the off-season and season, I think that will go a long way in helping his body stay strong. To me, nutrition is very important and I think it makes a huge difference in how long you can play at a high level and stay healthy.
A lot of NBA players seem to have shit diets and it's no wonder than they break down early and look like total shit in their early to mid-thirties. You really got to have a good diet if you want as good a chance as possible to stay healthy and keep playing at a high level when you're an older player/athlete.

To be honest, this is a terrible decision. He's holding his team hostage yet again. He should be resting himself for defending this title. He should have passed on the reigns of international basketball 3 years ago. This should be all behind him. Emmanuel still has some growth on his perspective.

Manu isn't (or any NBA player for that matter) shouldn't be going hard all year only to play again at the highest level over the off season. He really shouldn't need to do this to prove anything to himself or anyone else. He's just won a championship. Manu should be beyond this.

:lol Why do some people hate Manu Ginobili so much? He did just play a crucial role in winning a championship for our team just a few days ago.
It's also a bit of a contradiction. If you hate Manu (i.e. think he's overrated), then you shouldn't be concerned about him playing in the summer because he's merely a role player for the Spurs now. If you do think his summer activity significantly affects the Spurs, then you clearly think highly of his contribution.
I'm neither a Manu fan nor hater, so I have no stake in that debate. It's just, some of you talk about him as if he raped and murdered your mother, and it's weird and funny.

That's pretty much my point, if he drives the lane in the World Cup and pulls his hamstring is it the World Cup's fault and the 100ish international games he has played over the last 10 years? Or the 900ish NBA games he has played over the last 10 years.
I believe the number of games he will be playing and the levels of exertion he will be emitting will be insignificant in his quality of play next year. By the general consensus here, it doesn't make sense to play him at all until at least playoffs next year.
International ball might even help, dude is getting older every year and could probably do well with the extra early conditioning boost for the next season.
The general consensus is not "don't play him until the playoffs". I am extreme, and I said March, I think. Half joking. He needs to play some before the playoffs, obviously, for rythm and conditioning purposes. But not in June-August. And, most are extending their start dates for his play later in the season BECAUSE OF HIS DECISION. Your consensus is way off. Either you didn't read the whole thread (I understand, it's long) or you were being disingenuous. Either case, wrong.
No, it's not the World Cup's fault. It's no one's "fault". But, it would not have happened in the World Cup if he wasn't playing in the World Cup. End of story. You may believe the added number of games is insignificant, but you would be wrong. If you ask an actuarian that specializes in insuring athletes to insure him for those 10 games and 30 practices, or 6 games and 20 practices, or whatever the case may be, depending upon how far they advance, do you think his premium will be zero? Do you think the actuary will perform all calculations for a 37 year old man, chaos of game play, etc. and arrive at a probability of zero that he will get injured? Do you think the actuary, coach pop, and doctors will really believe that Manu will be BETTER OFF with further game-level exertion over the summer? Conditioning can be maintained in other ways; in a more controllable environment. You don't need to play in international competition to maintain conditioning. Ludicrous.
Do you think the actuary, doctors, and Pop would conclude that it would be more risky for him to play? Obvious.
Injury can happen closing his car door, but you can't mitigate those things. You can only mitigate what you can. Do you think Pop would like, if he had his druthers, to have Manu to risk for himself, for Spurs games? Sure, he may get injured at any point in a Spurs game, as well, and wear is cumulative, but Pop would like to only be rolling the dice for US. It is why Pop limits his minutes so carefully ALREADY. Why would he volunteer to play him more if he didn't have to? He wouldn't.
It is the same with motorcycles and athletes. It is unlikely that an athlete suffers an injury on a motorcycle. However, do you want one of your athletes driving one? Hell no. Of course not. (I am a motorcycle ower. But, taking passion out of things, they are riskier than cars. True story. And, watch an old guy vs. young guy wreck on a motorcycle...life threatening vs. get up and dust yourself off in the same situation, sometimes - bones crack when you're young...shatter when you're old...but I digress) And, they write that shit into contracts. They would prevent this international play for the same reason, if they could. The Spurs can't.
It is selfish of us, but to float a notion that there is no added risk, and that it's actually better for a 37 year old to be out there flinging himself around the court over the summer is good for us. Silly. Any benefit in conditioning is far outweighed by the risk. Ask the actuary.
I, and most, are not saying that Manu doesn't have a right to do this. He does. It is the way the NBA is structured. However, it is also reasonable for Spurs fans to be saddened with his choice. The window for a repeat is here and now, and fleeting and fragile. Fleeting and fragile. I love Manu. He seems like a great guy. That he wants to play for his country is also a positive reflection on his character, but it still detracts from what he can give The Spurs. For that, I, and many of us, are reasonably disappointed. Full Manu > Partial Manu, even if the differential is only 1%. Fleeting and fragile.

Manu feels good physically right now, of course he wants to play with his NT.
That kind of competitiveness is in his nature, it´s who he is, and after twelve years I´m sure the FO knows this and made a choice to live with it, because at the end of the day that will bring them more benefits than regrets.

Yes. They made a choice to accept it. That is different than to say they would prefer it, and that it benefits them.

Will his shitty country offset his Spurs salary in worthless, inflation-plagued Argentina currency via a check to Peter Holt? I thought not.......
It's not about the money. It's about representing his country and playing with good friends. People don't seem to have a problem with that concept when it's the Olympics and it's the USA players doing it. Manu draped a flag on his shoulders for a reason.

I don't know what his diet is like, but you bring up a good point. We need to get some Baker Street Irregulars on it, monitor those septic clean outs and traps, get a hold of some stool samples so we can monitor the sitch. Calculate C/P ratios, etc.

It's a myth that every player in the Spur system will improve after one year. Jefferson never got better. Blair never got better. Mason never got better. Gary Neal was worse by his 3rd year in SA. Beno never did anything better in his 2nd year. DeColo looked just as bad in year two. Shitty players will always be shitty players no matter how much time they spend in the Spurs system.
Not "every player". Let's talk about one player, Marco. Let's talk about likelihoods, not inevitabilities. Marco is LIKELY to improve, and given that what he already gave us was a hell of a lot, his improvement will be gravy. The myth you speak of is more fact than myth. All of those players probably got better in their second years, at least in some aspects of understanding the system, etc. The issue is their RATE of improvement and their ceilings and their costs. All of those things are in flux...
Jefferson was probably a better player his second year, but he still sucked in comparison to what was expected of him and what he was being paid, and his rate of improvement had leveled off and/or reached a ceiling.
Blair was surely better in some ways, understanding the system, etc, but pouting and fat. Gary. Gary was so much worse his third year that he priced himself out of a Spurs uniform!
Most players that aren't on the end of the bench do better. Even most of the ones on the end of the bench do better. Marco is more likely to follow that trend than not. Picking the outliers from the data and say that they define the rule doesn't work. Much more reasonable to err on the side that Marco will improve, at least marginally, than to follow the less likely trend.

Nice way to prop your argument by citing only spurs championship years. :rolleyes spurs have lost more championships than they've won, dumbass. Most lost championships were due to Ginobili's dumbass placing more emphasis on wearing out his body in the offseason with international play... He's got fucked priorities

And stop using the money card . . . "The Spurs pay his salary . . . he should only play for the Spurs " FUCK YOU! The SPurs knew what they were getting into when they gave Manu the last contract. In fact, the Spurs are Ok with Manu playing for his NT.
So enjoy Manu playing for Argentine because that i what he truly loves.

How is it irrelevant? You're insinuating that without Manu Tim doesn't win 4 of his 5 rings, which is simply not true. When did I blame Manu for any losses? He's been responsible for some, like Game 6 of last years Finals. Now you can say I've blamed Manu for certain losses.

What I'm insinuating is that you cannot blame the Spurs losses throughout these years solely on Manu playing summer bball, such as what all the assholes who are insulting Manu on this thread are, and the turn around and not give him a shitload of credit for the rings the Spurs did win, such as what you are doing. But seriously, I think we should all stop blaming Manu. This seems to be more of an issue with the retards running Argentina's basketball federation. Don't know why they're asking a 37 year old to continue to carry the corpse of Argentina in another meaningless international tourney. Argy's done winning bball titles - have been for quite some time. All they're doing is negatively affecting the Spurs at this point.

Never understood what is betrayal by a champion playing for his home country. Fans who don't understand what that means can walk their lazy asses back to the couch and watch their TV. Manu helped win a 5th ring for this franchise, and he has earned the right to do whatever he wants for Argentina.

With Duncan opting out to provide the Spurs even more leeway to resign Patty and Boris, It looks like both will be back which makes Manu decision a lot easier to swallow at this point.
I expect Pop to play Manu only 15 minutes a night early season with the 2nd night of b2b off. He will increase his minutes after the allstar break.

Ugh. Also, it's not like the Argentines need 36yos clogging up their national roster - give the spot to youth!

Manu is one of the greatest players all time, for the Spurs, for the NBA, for Argentina and for FIBA and he is what he is, the great baskets, the outstanding plays, also the mistakes, the turnovers and all the risky action, he is a combo, a unique combo.
The Spurs organization chooses to pay Manu everytime and renew or extend his contract and keep him for more than 12 years, being one of the pillars of the last decade for the franchise, because Manu is one of the most talented basketball players ever.
That is why the Spurs pay his salary happily, so live with that and enjoy the guy while he is on the court.

I've lived in LA, San Antonio, and now I live in Houston, and fucking pochos are so annoying. My conclusion is that since they can't differentiate themselves from other immigrants, not only beans.... from central america, etc. with their physical aspect alone, they try hard, poor souls, I can't image how frustrated they might be... wanting to be something they will never be and not having the money Michael Jackson had to change their color, or get some hormones to grow a few inches. They seem to have pretty much similar beginnings as the US... immigrants populated the land and segregated the natives.... difference is that Spaniards and Italians also inherited their bad ways and poor integrity. The country has gone downhill for years now... but I'd consider Argies, white TBH, another kind of white, but not beans definitely.
