Manu just said in a TV interview that the training camp this year will be in St Thomas, Virgin Islands. He also said that he will be flying to San Antonio to begin practicing tomorrow morning.

Pop has been saying he'd like to have training camp in Europe so the team can concentrate on basketball. VI might be even better for that.

Good breaking news, kolko!

We haven't busted the kluby out in over a month. It's usually for self-props but in this case, you can feel good about it. Maybe Kori will give you a Spur. :D

You mean millions were spent on a great practice facility and training camp is somewhere else? I don't think so. Maybe a couple of days or something, like the Twolves going to Vegas <eyes rolling>, but that's it.

The Spurs have to be back in SA for the pre-season schedule, so a USVI camp would couldn't be all of October.

Well the Spurs first two preseason games are in the Carolinas. When they were talking about training camp being elsewhere before, they were talking of the 10 days or so before the preseason games start. That's probably the case here.

It makes a lot of sense to me. Football, baseball, and hockey teams all go away to training camps. It puts the team in controlled environments and allows full concentration on the sport. For years, the Lakers held their camp in Hawaii, and that seemed to work for them. I see no negatives here.

I have no objection to wherever, but if it's gonna be USVI, I would have preferred it be in Timmys' St. Croix. :)

The reason they probably went with St. Thomas over St. Croix is the crowd factor. St. Croix might have had more distractions than San Antonio.

I've found this while reading the new CBA:

(iii) No Team shall hold its training camp outside the United States and Canada in any two successive Seasons.

"whether the VI is in the United States or not"

close enough for government work:

"The U.S. Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory with a non-voting Delegate to the United States House of Representatives.

All persons born on the islands are citizens of the United States and are governed by U.S. law."

Yeah, but there were some rumors that training camp next year would be in Europe.

Oh, okay.

I understood that would be in 2007.

Edit .. I found my old post about it. You are right, there's 4 teams that are having it in 2006 and 2007.

And then in 2006 and 2007, 4 NBA teams are going to have training camp and preseason games in Europe. They are also going to have that 4-team tournament (2 NBA teams and the Euroleague Champion and Runner-Up) in Europe.

I understand that there will also be a couple teams having preseason games in Latin America and in Asia in 2006 and 2007. So that might be the time when there would be Spurs preseason games in Argentina.

Here's details about the Europe preseason in 2006 and 2007, in case anyone cares ....

NBA and Euroleague Basketball Announce Europe Live Presented by EA Sports

DETROIT -- June 14, 2005 – Four NBA teams will head to Europe for a competition against top European basketball clubs in October 2006 and 2007 as part of NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS™, the NBA and Euroleague Basketball announced today. As part of a two-year partnership agreement with Electronic Arts and Euroleague Basketball, the four NBA teams will compete in five European countries.

“This is the NBA's most ambitious European basketball competition,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern. “NBA Europe Live will exemplify how sports leagues around the world can work together for the long-term growth of their sport. As the relevance of basketball continues to grow globally, the NBA and EA SPORTS share a vision that delivers basketball, entertainment, music and technology to our fans around the world.”

An NBA licensee since 1991, EA has expanded its relationship with the league to become an official global marketing partner of the NBA, the first developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software to be designated with this status. As a global marketing partner, EA will work with the NBA to develop interactive basketball programs around the world, including NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS.

The award-winning NBA LIVE franchise, recognized worldwide for delivering the most authentic interactive basketball experience for more than a decade, will be featured in promotion of the events throughout Europe and the U.S. The newest iteration in the series, NBA LIVE 06, will be available this October in more than 100 countries on six continents.

“Like sports, video games have a global appeal that transcends language and borders,” said Electronic Arts Chairman and CEO Larry Probst. “At EA, we’re proud to be an ambassador for one of the world’s most exciting sports, NBA Basketball.”

Building on the league’s success in Europe and its relationship with Euroleague Basketball, the four NBA teams will compete in games against top Euroleague Basketball teams and conduct training camps. NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS will culminate with a final event in a fifth European country featuring games with two NBA teams, the Euroleague Basketball Champion and Euroleague Basketball runner-up.

“Years of steady, positive relations between the NBA and Euroleague Basketball have covered diverse aspects of sports organization and this partnership will continue to cultivate the success of basketball in Europe,” said Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu. “This partnership will help to continue the tradition of basketball excellence and achievement, contribute to the growth of the sport and will benefit European fans by offering them another chance to enjoy great basketball.”

The announcement will be carried live on both NBA TV and NBA.com at 7:45 p.m. Eastern. Additional information about NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS will be announced later this year.

The NBA’s last visit to Europe was in 2003 for the NBA Europe Games, which featured a preseason game between that year’s NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs and the Memphis Grizzlies, at Bercy Arena in Paris, France. San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker returned home to his native France for the first time with his NBA team before a sellout crowd. The Memphis Grizzlies went on to play an exhibition game against 2003 Euroleague Champions FC Barcelona at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. The game featured Memphis Grizzlies star forward Pau Gasol, a native of Barcelona, Spain, playing against his former team.

That just says a passport is an acceptable form of identification or proof of US citizenship. But a passport isn't required to travel there.

Spurs To Hold Training Camp In U.S. Virgin Islands

The San Antonio Spurs have announced that the team will hold its 2005 training camp at the University of the Virgin Islands at the school's St. Thomas campus. The team will hold its annual media day at the Airport Embassy Suites in San Antonio at 11:00 a.m. on October 3 before departing for St. Thomas.
The Spurs will hold their entire training camp on the island with the first practice scheduled for October 4. The team will depart St. Thomas on October 13 and travel directly to Charleston, South Carolina for a preseason game there against the Philadelphia 76ers on October 14.

The team's daily practice schedule will be announced at a later date. All practices will take place at the Sports and Fitness Center located on the University of the Virgin Island's beachside campus. Practice sessions will be closed to both the media and the public.

The Spurs will be the first NBA team to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"This is a very exciting event for everyone in the Virgin Islands," said Peter Sauer, the Athletic Director at the University of the Virgin Islands. "We are thrilled that an NBA team is coming to our community. The fact that it is the San Antonio Spurs makes it even sweeter. For the last 10 years the Spurs have served as the model franchise in the NBA. Not only do they win on the court but they do everything the right way, from their ownership to their basketball staff to their players and front office."

The University of the Virgin Islands is an accredited U.S. college with approximately 2,700 students spread over two campuses, one located on St. Thomas and one on St. Croix, which is where Spurs forward Tim Duncan was born and raised.

"We've always thought about holding training camp in the Virgin Islands," said Spurs General Manager RC Buford. "It certainly is something that is very important to Tim Duncan. But we really think it'll be a great experience for the entire team."

That's actually a misprint that you are reading.

The Spurs will leave St. Thomas on Tuesday, October 11 for their Wednesday, October 12 contest with the Philadelphia 76ers in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Winston-Salem game is after that -- the 13th.

Just watching the news, hurricane Katrina, and decided to google hurricane season.
"A distinct hurricane season occurs from June 1 to November 30, sharply peaking from from late August through September." Let's hope this does not disrupt the training.

Duncan, Spurs coming to V.I.
By MICHAEL POTTER
Friday, August 26th 2005

Virgin Islander and NBA superstar Tim Duncan is coming home for a visit - and he's bringing friends.

The world champion San Antonio Spurs will hold the team's 2005 training camp at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas, UVI and Spurs officials announced on Thursday.

The Spurs will begin practicing on Oct. 4, and the camp will continue until the team departs St. Thomas on Oct. 13 to begin its preseason schedule. Daily practices will be closed to the public, but fans will be able to attend an intra-squad scrimmage to see Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Robert Horry and the rest of the Spurs in action.

"We've always thought about holding training camp in the Virgin Islands," general manager R.C. Buford said in a statement released by the Spurs. "It certainly is something that is very important to Tim Duncan. But we really think it'll be a great experience for the entire team."

The Spurs' training camp is expected to attract newspaper and television coverage from both San Antonio media and national news organizations to St. Thomas. The practices could also draw interest from media in Argentina, where native son Ginobili is revered much the same way Duncan is here. That just makes me giggle, because doesn't anything involving Manu attract Argentinian media?

"We are pleased and proud to host the Spurs," said UVI president LaVerne Ragster. "It is an absolutely wonderful honor, and we're happy to welcome back our own Tim Duncan."

For Duncan, it will be his first trip to the territory since winning his third NBA title and Finals MVP award in June. As far as triumphant homecomings go, this one should be about as dramatic as they get.

For a territory full of Tim Duncan fans, it will be the first - and perhaps only - chance to get a first-hand look at the 6-foot-11 Crucian in a Spurs uniform. In his eight-year NBA career, Duncan has become one of the most recognizable and honored basketball players in the world, winning two league Most Valuable Player awards and playing in seven All-Star Games.

But Duncan has not played a game in the Virgin Islands since turning pro.

"Speaking to Tim, he's very excited about the opportunity to come home," said Rashidi Clenance, Duncan's longtime friend and president of Sun Stroke Promotions on St. Croix. "He hasn't played ball in the Virgin Islands since he left for the NBA. He's always wanted in some way to come back home."

Clenance is in the process of preparing a travel package that will be made available for fans from St. Croix to attend the Spurs' scrimmage. Though details and final cost of the package have not yet been finalized, Clenance said there will be no charge for transportation to and from St. Thomas for St. Croix residents.

"Tim is going to foot the bill for the boat charter for people from St. Croix to come over," Clenance said. "He just wants to get as many people from St. Croix to St. Thomas to see this open scrimmage as possible."

The efforts of Duncan and Clenance were "instrumental" in bringing the Spurs to the territory, according to UVI athletic director Peter Sauer, who spent most of the summer hammering out the details of the deal with Buford.

The Spurs general manager first called in early July to follow up on a letter Sauer sent him shortly after the Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals. Buford expressed interest in bringing the team's training camp to UVI - a response Sauer had been waiting to hear for nearly five years.

Sauer began efforts to bring an NBA training camp to the Sports and Fitness Center almost as soon as the facility was finished in 2001. San Antonio topped his wish list from the start.

"Anytime you have the chance to deal with an organization that has set the bar in the NBA at the highest level, it's a great thing to be able to host their training camp here at the University of the Virgin Islands," Sauer said.

Buford visited St. Thomas earlier this month to scout out the facility and begin negotiations. According to Sauer, Territorial Police Chief Novelle Francis and Internal Revenue Bureau director Louis Willis facilitated arrangements that will assure the Spurs of adequate security and transportation during their stay, and Buford was pleased by the pristine maintenance of the Sports and Fitness Center by Charles Martin and the UVI physical plant staff.

The success of UVI's annual Paradise Jam Division-I College Basketball Tournament also played a part in reassuring Buford.

"He heard how professionally we run events down here," Sauer said. "He checked with college coaches around the country about that."

Additional upgrades, including bringing pieces of the hardwood over from the Antilles School's Marin Center to expand the court at UVI, will also be made to accommodate the Spurs.

The Spurs will pick up the entire cost for bringing the team here - a much more expensive prospect than holding training camp in the San Antonio area. The financial burden is one the Spurs are obviously willing to bear for their franchise player.

"The Spurs are coming because Tim is from St. Croix," Clenance said. "It's unprecedented having an NBA team practice in the Virgin Islands, let alone the NBA champions. A lot of compromises had to be made for the Spurs to make this happen, but the Spurs were willing to make the sacrifice for Tim."

Most islanders who can afford it take off for their vacations in Sept. because of the hurricane possibility. Lots of places close down for two weeks and do their renovations during Sept-but the Spurs may be able to negotiate a relatively cheap stay because of it.

If Timmy picks up the boat fare for Crucians to go to St. Thomas, he'll be making a major investment. It usually costs 35-50 dollars each way, depending on the transport and there will be a shitload of Crucians who'll take advantage of the free trip. What a guy!
