Manu just said in a TV interview that the training camp this year will be in St Thomas, Virgin Islands. He also said that he will be flying to San Antonio to begin practicing tomorrow morning.

Pop has been saying he'd like to have training camp in Europe so the team can concentrate on basketball. VI might be even better for that.

    Good breaking news, kolko!

We haven't busted the kluby out in over a month. It's usually for self-props but in this case, you can feel good about it. Maybe Kori will give you a Spur.

Yeah, Germany would be cool. I will show the team some cool places and teach them how to shoot free-throws...

You mean millions were spent on a great practice facility and training camp is somewhere else? I don't think so. Maybe a couple of days or something, like the Twolves going to Vegas <eyes rolling>, but that's it.

The Spurs have to be back in SA for the pre-season schedule, so a USVI camp would couldn't be all of October.

Well the Spurs first two preseason games are in the Carolinas. When they were talking about training camp being elsewhere before, they were talking of the 10 days or so before the preseason games start. That's probably the case here.

It makes a lot of sense to me. Football, baseball, and hockey teams all go away to training camps. It puts the team in controlled environments and allows full concentration on the sport. For years, the Lakers held their camp in Hawaii, and that seemed to work for them. I see no negatives here.

I have no objection to wherever, but if it's gonna be USVI, I would have preferred it be in Timmys' St. Croix.

The reason they probably went with St. Thomas over St. Croix is the crowd factor. St. Croix might have had more distractions than San Antonio.

I've found this while reading the new CBA:

(iii) No Team shall hold its training camp outside the United States and Canada in any two successive Seasons.

"whether the VI is in the United States or not"

    close enough for government work:

    http://www.usvi.org/tourism/factsheet/itsofficial.html

"The U.S. Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory with a non-voting Delegate to the United States House of Representatives.

All persons born on the islands are citizens of the United States and are governed by U.S. law."

It looks like the Spurs may be playing one preseason game in St Thomas but it's not official yet.

Does that matter? Wasn't it in 2003 (not last year) that they were in Paris?

Yeah, but there were some rumors that training camp next year would be in Europe.

    Oh, okay.

I understood that would be in 2007.

Edit .. I found my old post about it. You are right, there's 4 teams that are having it in 2006 and 2007.

And then in 2006 and 2007, 4 NBA teams are going to have training camp and preseason games in Europe. They are also going to have that 4-team tournament (2 NBA teams and the Euroleague Champion and Runner-Up) in Europe.

I understand that there will also be a couple teams having preseason games in Latin America and in Asia in 2006 and 2007. So that might be the time when there would be Spurs preseason games in Argentina.

Tell them they can practice in Butuan City, Philippines. My grandparents have a kick ass basketball court.

Probably not technically outside the US (it doesn't require a passport, for example).

Here's details about the Europe preseason in 2006 and 2007, in case anyone cares ....

NBA and Euroleague Basketball Announce Europe Live Presented by EA Sports

DETROIT -- June 14, 2005 – Four NBA teams will head to Europe for a compe ion against top European basketball clubs in October 2006 and 2007 as part of NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS™, the NBA and Euroleague Basketball announced today. As part of a two-year partnership agreement with Electronic Arts and Euroleague Basketball, the four NBA teams will compete in five European countries.

“This is the NBA's most ambitious European basketball compe ion,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern. “NBA Europe Live will exemplify how sports leagues around the world can work together for the long-term growth of their sport. As the relevance of basketball continues to grow globally, the NBA and EA SPORTS share a vision that delivers basketball, entertainment, music and technology to our fans around the world.”

An NBA licensee since 1991, EA has expanded its relationship with the league to become an official global marketing partner of the NBA, the first developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software to be designated with this status. As a global marketing partner, EA will work with the NBA to develop interactive basketball programs around the world, including NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS.

The award-winning NBA LIVE franchise, recognized worldwide for delivering the most authentic interactive basketball experience for more than a decade, will be featured in promotion of the events throughout Europe and the U.S. The newest iteration in the series, NBA LIVE 06, will be available this October in more than 100 countries on six continents.

“Like sports, video games have a global appeal that transcends language and borders,” said Electronic Arts Chairman and CEO Larry Probst. “At EA, we’re proud to be an ambassador for one of the world’s most exciting sports, NBA Basketball.”

Building on the league’s success in Europe and its relationship with Euroleague Basketball, the four NBA teams will compete in games against top Euroleague Basketball teams and conduct training camps. NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS will culminate with a final event in a fifth European country featuring games with two NBA teams, the Euroleague Basketball Champion and Euroleague Basketball runner-up.

“Years of steady, positive relations between the NBA and Euroleague Basketball have covered diverse aspects of sports organization and this partnership will continue to cultivate the success of basketball in Europe,” said Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu. “This partnership will help to continue the tradition of basketball excellence and achievement, contribute to the growth of the sport and will benefit European fans by offering them another chance to enjoy great basketball.”

The announcement will be carried live on both NBA TV and NBA.com at 7:45 p.m. Eastern. Additional information about NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS will be announced later this year.

The NBA’s last visit to Europe was in 2003 for the NBA Europe Games, which featured a preseason game between that year’s NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs and the Memphis Grizzlies, at Bercy Arena in Paris, France. San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker returned home to his native France for the first time with his NBA team before a sellout crowd. The Memphis Grizzlies went on to play an exhibition game against 2003 Euroleague Champions FC Barcelona at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. The game featured Memphis Grizzlies star forward Pau Gasol, a native of Barcelona, Spain, playing against his former team.
